Grub2-bios -- yes or no? [SOLVED]

I switched to grub2 only a couple of months ago when I installed an SSD as my main boot drive for Arch. It took me a bit of doing to migrate from grub, but I finally got it working and haven't worried with it since.
Now pacman proposes replacing grub2 with grub2-bios. I've tried to read up on this, but I'm confused.
Is this a change I want or not?
Thanks!

Afaik the custom config is automatically copied back after the installation?

  • [SOLVED] Splitting grub2 package as grub2-bios and grub2-efi

    Hi all,
I currently maintain the grub2-efi-bzr http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=40290 and grub2-bios-bzr http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=41055 AUR packages. I proposed a split PKGBUILD to tpowa and pressh for grub2 package based on requests at https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/19838 and https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/20419 . The PKGBUILD creates 4 packages grub2-common, grub2-bios, grub2-efi-x86_64, grub2-efi-i386.
I need your impressions and suggestions on improving the PKGBUILD, especially in avoiding the use of multilib toolchain. Thanks in advance.
grub2-bios for Archlinux i686 and x86_64 (multilib needed in x86_64) - compiled as any in Arch64
grub2-bios for Archlinux i686 and x86_64 (multilib needed in x86_64) - compiled as any in Arch64
grub2-efi-x86_64 for Archlinux i686 and x86_64 (no need for multilib in x86_64, not possible to compile in i686) - compiled as any in Arch64
I currently use x86_64 Archlinux with gcc-multilib from the official repo. I do not have i686 linux (either Arch or any other distro) installed. My system compiles both grub2-efi-x86_64 and grub2-efi-i386 using the below PKGBUILD. I use only grub2-efi-x86_64 (or x86_64-EFI) in my system.

The package is now in testing repo and will soon be moved to extra repo. Solved by splitting the PKGBUILDs and through direct interaction with grub2 maintainer using irc.

    Hi to everyone:
The solution is simple: I did turn off the floppy drive from the BIOS and I could install GRUB2 in my machine.
Thanks to Ronald van Haren for his help and patience. Until the next.

  • 848P wont' post after bios upgrade under windows --- SOLVED

    Hi, I own a MSI 848p Neo-V, with a P4C 3Ghz, 2*512 PC4000 Corsair,  6600GT AGP, 1 CD recorder set as Master in primary IDE,
2 HDD SATA, PSU Antec 350W.
All that stuff has been working fine for months   untill I installed liveupdate 3.69 downloaded from MSI web site , then started the bios (6788v61 I guess) update operation  . I performed this update in Windows environment (Win XP SP2), I also ceated the safety floppy disk as suggested during the process.
Since then, the computer will not start  : nopost at all, no display, no beep, no boot. I just have the cd recorder led and the LAN adapter led blinking from time to time. I performed a clear CMOS but it did not solved my problem.
Any idea or suggestion would be helpful.
    Kind regards

Hey! I managed to fix it fianlly !!!
I read a lot of threads in many forums, and first learning is do not upgrade if you do not need to (stupid but correct at the same time  )
I found a contribution from MarkA (who's my new god by the way) here https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=28048.msg161595#msg161595
I don't know whether the ram story is relevant, but it worked for me anyway ; here is exactly what I did to recover :
    1 - ungluged PSU cable
2 - pushed power button to totally empty capacitors
    3 - clean Clear Cmos (jbat1 moved from 1-2 to 2-3) --> https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=31222.0
4 - remove the two PC4000 Corsair Ram modules
5 - inserted one 2700 Ram module (borrowed for this test)
    6 - move jbat1 back to 1-2
7 - insert floppy with latest bios renamed AMIBOOT.ROM (
8 - plug the psu cable back in
    9 - power on while pressing Ctrl+Home
10 - removed floppy when hearing 4 bips
11 - reboot, and display is working (hurra!  )
12 - Access to bios to restore settings
    13 - Power off
    14 - ungluged PSU cable
    15 - removed the 2700 Ram module
16 - inserted the two PC4000 Corsair Ram modules instead
17 - plug the psu cable back in
Since then, everything is working fine
Thanks to all who tried to support me in this operation.

  • M77 Motherboard failed bios update to 60 [Solved]

    Hello all,
I recently tried to update my bios to version 17.6 or 60 and on reboot it came up with a blue screen. Then windows tried to complete startup Repair, but that failed.
I Tried to swap to the second bios but it seems that one got hit also by the failure.
I am able to boot to the bios, however and tried recover using m-flash utitility.  nothing on reboot though.
Am i pretty much screwed at this point. It is a new board for me i just bought it back in i think October.  Do i need to just RMA this board or is there something else i can do?
    Thanks for the help.

It should go though whatever boot order you have set looking for the first available bootmgr.
At one time did you have an os on ther HDD? If so, there is probably still a boot partition. Just remove that and it will just check it and move on.
Yes, there was an os still on it.  I am keeping it like that so if i forgot to move some files over i won't loose them.
Thanks i will google how to remove the boot partition on it.

  • Wifi not working after bios upgrade. [SOLVED]

    Hi All,
I have just upgraded my bios to correct a freq scaling issue and have noticed that WiFi is no longer working.
    In dmesg I notice:
    p54pci 0000:06:00.0: PCI INT A disabled
p54pci: probe of 0000:06:00.0 failed with error -110
Looks like something to do with IRQ allocation for that PCI slot, does anyone know how to fix this?
I have scoured my motherboard manual, but see nothing about IRQ allocation to PCI slots  ... and I am not even certain this is the problem.
All I know is, that my prism54 card in that slot worked fine before the BIOS update.
    Thanks,
    B

    Hi, I found the issue.
When I did the BIOS update, I did a reboot to try out new settings etc ... this however was not good enough.
On googling around on the error, I found that the solution is to shutdown the box completely .. wait for the caps to discharge, then restart the box.
The card then started to work fine.
I guess the problem is one I have found at times with cards that require firmware, It is only when you do a complete powerdown like this, that the card resets correctly and
re-loads it's firmware .... I have had this issue show up in different ways on other cards (i.e DVB cards not loading there firmware).
I guess in this case the card retained some settings from the old BIOS which was not compatible with the new BIOS.
    Marking as solved.

  • [SOLVED]Grub2 installation fails

    Hello everyone !
I just switched from Ubuntu to Arch Linux and I have some trouble.
I can't seem to install grub2, I got a 64GB SSD with GPT and no EFI bios :
    sudo pacman -S grub2
    resolving dependencies...
    looking for inter-conflicts...
    Targets (2): grub2-common-1:1.99-4 grub2-bios-1:1.99-4
    Total Download Size: 0.00 MB
    Total Installed Size: 8.20 MB
    Proceed with installation? [Y/n] Y
    (2/2) checking package integrity [######################] 100%
    (2/2) checking for file conflicts [######################] 100%
    (1/2) installing grub2-common [######################] 100%
( The total download size must be 0.00 MB because I tried several times so it was already downloaded )
And then it hangs forever. It does the same thing when I try to install grub2-common alone. What should i do ?
    Thanks in advance

Hello thanks for your answer !
Unfortunately the cpu is not hanging since I'm running xfce and doing the install in a terminal and I can still do other stuff. I already tried to remove grub2 and separately grub2-bios and grub2-common. Grub is also not installed because when I installed arch linux it failed for unknown reason to install grub on my /dev/sdb, each time i tried, telling me there was some sort of error. And I checked with pacman -Rs grub.
At the moment I'm still forced to put my other hard drive with ubuntu on it in order to have his grub launch arch linux. When I only put the disk with arch linux on it, it hangs at boot, well just after the bios finishes loading it hangs without outputting anything ( because of the failing of grub install while installing arch ? ). Well I'm really lost

    Dear Archers
I want to convertmy existing MBR to GPT, and then load GRUB2 for installing Funtoo on this same HDD. ArchWiki says leave 2MiB for EF02 GPT-BIOS partition, before /boot (/dev/sda1). But, I have only 14.5KB in this position. But I have 5MB in the end. Can I use this 5MB for EFI02 partition?
It is said I should do this before I convert MBR to GPT. I have not yet converted MBR to GPT.  Pl. advise. If there are other pitfalls in this subject matter (including Funtoo install) advice appreciated

Went ahead (since no further inputs from any body), converted the last 5.8MB on the disk to bios-boot partition (before converting MBR to GPT), without file system, label EF082 (bios-boot partition)
Later, installed GRUB2-bios, in the 440 byte boot code region of MBR, as recommended by Archwiki. Now, system is with GPT partition (BIOS, not UEFI), boot loader is GRUB2. Now, free from the limitation of only 4 primary partition (with MBR)

  • Installing grub2 1.99rc1 on Linux Software RAID (/dev/md[0-x])

    Hello!
In the last days I tried to install Archlinux x64 on my server. This server consists of 4 SATA drives. I'm using Linux software Raid with the following configuration:
    mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --auto=yes --level=10 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1
    mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md1 --auto=yes --level=10 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 /dev/sdd2
    mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md2 --auto=yes --level=0 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3 /dev/sdc3 /dev/sdd3
    md0 --> / including /boot
    md1 --> /data (my storage partiton)
    md2 --> my swap partion
In the last step of the installer I don't installed grub and leave the installer without installing a bootloader.
I mounted the /dev folder to /mnt/dev and chrooted in my new system:
    chroot /mnt bash
In my new system I installed the new grub2 bootloader with:
    pacman -S grub2-bios
In the next step I tried to install the bootloader to the MBR with the following command:
    grub_bios-install --boot-directory=/boot --no-floppy --recheck /dev/md0
But I get the following error:
    /sbin/grub-probe: error: no such disk.
    Auto-detection of a filesystem of /dev/md0 failed.
    Please report this together with the output of "/sbin/grub-probe --device-map="/boot/grub/device.map" --target=fs -v /boot/grub" to <[email protected]>
I also tried to install the grub2 directly on my discs with the following command:
    grub_bios-install --boot-directory=/boot --no-floppy --recheck /dev/sda
But the error is the same as above.
Following the instruction of the error message I executed the following command:
    /sbin/grub-probe --device-map="/boot/grub/device.map
I get a large debug output:

There is a tutorial for installing grub2 at ArchLinux in the wiki:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Grub2
But I can't find any solution for my problem.
Does anybody know a solution for this problem?
    Thanks for help

I'm sure it is the cause of the problem. But not new format. The old one (0.90) is incompatible with grub2.
I hit the same problem and today I managed to fix it.
What I did: I copied /boot to tmp directory, destroyed /dev/md0 (my /boot) with metadata 0.90, created new /dev/md0 (metadata 1.2), copied back /boot content.
    After that, grub_bios-install /dev/sda && grub_bios-install /dev/sdb finished without any errors.

  • [solved]Can't reinstall grub2_bios

Several weird things have just happened.
I just removed my Fedora partition.  I was just some logical partition in extended with swap.  That was pretty normal.  Getting rid of Fedora is the only sane thing to do with it.  anyway, Gparted got rid of it, I gave a little more space to the Debian partition, shrunk extended, grew /home.  That all exited fine.
Then I rebooted and Arch wouldn't load.  I thought it might have something to do with the bootloader (which was stupid, cause the bootloader  actually did it's job fine, it was actually something about diskcheck failure),  I reninstalled grub2 to my Ubuntu partition with a LiveCD.  This didn't fix the problem.
Anyway, then I went try and fix the disk check problem in Arch.  It only let me log in as root for some kind of rescue mode thing.  Anyway, the only partitions that didn't check out were the ones with Ubuntu and Debian (which I mount into Arch as well for mantinance, since Debina is Sid, and Ubuntu is the current beta).  I don't actually know how to fix disk check failures, so I tried the next best thing, having them not be checked at boot.  I couldn't do it from the rescue console. It told me I was trying to edit a read-only drive (and I was root).  I logged into debian and tried.  This worked, though I still don't know why they can't be checked, nor why I couldn't edit the file from the rescue console.
Anyway, now I'm in arch, but I'm booting through the Ubuntu boot loader.  I want my arch bootloader back.  I tried to reistall it with...
    # grub_bios-install --boot-directory=/boot --no-floppy --recheck --force /dev/sda1
... but it says "rm: cannot remove `/boot/grub/core.img`: Operation not permitted"
And yes, I'm running it as root, before anyone asks.
    So what's up?

    # grub_bios-install --boot-directory=/boot --no-floppy --recheck --force /dev/sda1
    # chattr +i /boot/grub/core.img
Anyway as said in the wiki, its better to install grub2 bios to the MBR rather than the partition boot sector.

  • [SOLVED] Random freeze at poweroff / suspend.

«poweroff» command works from time to time.
When it does not work, it goes all the way to the end, prints „[42…] Power down.“ (looks like dmesg message), parks harddrive heads, and stays on (with screen on and this message shown).
«pm-suspend» (and «s2ram») also works sometimes, but most of the time it turns off the screen, parks harddrive heads, and stays on with fan spinning and leds in normal (working) state.
It depends on something (luck?), sometimes suspend and resume works with pm-suspend. But most of the time it hangs on suspend, so it is not usable.

Solved by updating to linux 3.0 and disabling plymouth (via removing „splash“ from grub.cfg).
This didn't work separately. kernel26 2.6.39.3 without plymouth gave a freeze, and linux 3.0 with plymouth gave a freeze.
    Everyone, thanks for help.

  • Update BIOS Failed on Tecra R10 with Windows7

    Hello,
I have problems with updating the BIOS of my Tecra R10J. The current version is 1.4, and I want to update it to 3.0, so i have downloaded from Toshiba web site the correct file named "P006Cv300.exe" released from 11/04/2009. This is a BIOS update ONLINE into a real session of Windows 7. Simply, right click the compress exe, click run as admin and that's all but ......... for me it said :
*"[Error] The starting of service was aborted. User does not have administrator privileges"*
    see below :
    http://perso.orange.fr/100mo/bioserror.jpg
    I've tried it with :
    - closed AV, Firewall, etc ...
    - disable UAC
    - Run as administrator
    - Tried with an another admin account
    - Safe mode (bios update does not support safe mode)
    - direct local administrator session
No change. Still the message "User does not have administrator privileges".
Need help please, found nothing on Google (similar Bios problem but not solved !!!!!)
    Thank you

Hi and thanks for your reply.
Yes my Tecra was delivered with Vista and not 7 but the bios update i've downloaded is "os independant". I can't believe that i must reinstall Vista for successful upgrading BIOS !! It's a joke ?
When i download the bios update on Toshiba website i choose "Tecra R10" and "Windows 7 64 bits" and then donwloaded the corresponding file.
Now I 've installed VAP, reboot notebook and now i have always the same error *but i found these errors in the eventviewer immediately after executing bios update* :
+\SystemRoot\SysWow64\Drivers\Aspi32.SYS has been blocked from loading due to incompatibility with this system. Please contact your software vendor for a compatible version of the driver.+
    and
+The Aspi32 service failed to start due to the following error: This driver has been blocked from loading+
    and
+The NCHGBIOS2SVC service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.+
    Any idea ?
    Thank you ;)

  • Can't Enable XMP after BIOS flash to V1.4 on P55-GD85

I didn't put this in the BIOS section because while the BIOS is involved,  I don't think it's necessarily a BIOS issue.  However, if it should go there please move it.
While not new to computers by any stretch I committed the cardinal sin of updating my BIOS when I didn't absolutely have to.  While their were some issues I'd hoped would be fixed with a new BIOS revision, they weren't critical.
I have a i7 860 Lynnfield system running Win 7 Home Premium 64 with a MSI P55-GD85 mobo which has been running fine since being built in March of this year.  This was the first BIOS flash since I've built the system.  The system came with either V1.0 or V1.1 (I think it was V1.1).  I checked using Live Update (yes, I now know this is bad) and found there had been several udpates since my current version.  I went ahead and used Live Update to flash the BIOS (yes, I know...not a good idea).   Contrary to the horror stories the flash itself went fine.  I watched it flash the BIOS and everything verified fine.  Of course  after the update I had to reset my BIOS settings to get the system to run which went fine.  The problem is that the one thing I can't do is enable the XMP option for the memory without the system crashing.  If I enable this option the system will POST and then do a memory dump before ever getting to the desktop.  Without turning this option on I can't take full advantage of my RAM.  I am running G.SKILL Trident 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) which are XMP compliant and ran without issue up until the BIOS update.  It is possible that there is some other setting that I didn't reset after the BIOS change to allow this to work that I am missing.  I know I did a bunch of tweaking and changing of settings trying to get things to run correctly when I first built the system.  I've gone over and over the BIOS and can't find anything else to try to get me to allow to enable the XMP option without crashing.  By simply enabling that option my system would normally run stable at about 3.6-3.7GHz.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this might be happening or what I can do about it?  About the only other thing I can think of is to reflash the BIOS back to a previous version to see if that helps.  I am sure there is something I am missing as there is no reason the BIOS shouldn't allow the XMP feature to be enabled without crashing.  Any help would be most appreciated.  Thanks.

Have you try to increase your RAM voltage to 1.55v ~1.6v?

  • [REQUEST] Less verbose Grub2

In my opinion this one of the little nice details that Ubuntu has. It would be nice if anyone can make a PKGBUILD for a Grub2 package that can ignore all the messages that appear before the splash screen, I refer to 'Welcome to Grub2... etc.' and 'loading' messages. It would be great, I think!

A PKGBUILD for grub2-bios-ubuntu with no messages ('Welcome to Grub2... etc.' and 'loading') is now in AUR:

  • IdeaPad U310 touch: Can no longer enter bios after updating to latest version

I flashed to the latest U310 bios (http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/65cn99ww.exe). I switched to "legacy boot mode" (from UEFI), in an attempt to workaround a driver issue. Now, I'm no longer able to enter BIOS whatsoever. There are plenty of forum posts by many users hitting the same or similar issues on U310/U410/U330 and similar ideapad products. But the resolutions where they exists are either invalid, or involve flashing to 65cn99ww.exe, which is not possible.
    [Environment]
Lenovo IdeaPad U310 touch, Windows 8 (also tried Windows 8.1)
    [What I did]
Flashed BIOS using official Lenovo bits (65cn99ww.exe). No errors occured
Enter BIOS afterwards and change to legacy boot mode (from UEFI)
    [Problem]
Cannot enter BIOS to view or change any settings.
    [Debugging]
Try to enter BIOS by key button sequence.
    1. Tried the following combinations during bootup: F2, Fn+Fn, F10, Fn+F10, F1, Fn+F1, 'B', 'N', Fn+'B', Fn+'N', Delete, Esc.
==> No change in behaviour. I tried each many times in case the timing is important.
    2. Boot by Novo button. This brings up a menu, which includes an entry to enter BIOS. However, choosing that menu entry boots to Windows
    3. Reboot to UEFI firmware settings from Windows (Settings/General/Advanced/UEFI). I can choose to boot to UEFI settings, but ultimately, just boots to Windows 8.
    4. Try to reflash BIOS. Fails with error 182: Version less than or equal. So reflash fails
    5. Try to reflash old BIOS. Flashing fails
    6. Unplug battery from motherboard for 1 minute. No difference in behavior
    7. Boot with SATA disconnected.
    8. Try various flashing options and alternate ways to flash. Not successful
    [Conclusion - BIOS is faulty]
I think this problem can be solved easily with a slightly newer variant of the BIOS being officially released by Lenovo. If someone from Lenovo is reading, can you please open an internal case on this.
Otherwise, I'm open to suggestions from the community. Does anyone know how I can hex edit the bios version #.
    Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    All,
When I navigate to the U310T (touch) on the support site, I'm not finding a BIOS update.
It may be that we have removed it.  The U310 (non-touch) does still show BIOS 65 available here for Windows 8/8.1 and BIOS 21 on the same page for Windows 7.
Is it possible that you have a touch model and applied the non-touch BIOS?
