GS60-2QE (970M) USB Boot Issue

Hi all,
I have been having a strange issue on my new Ghost Pro, sometime it allows me to boot from a USB CD drive or thumbstick and other times it won't. I have checked the BIOS settings, secure boot, UEFI, boot order and they are fine. The USB devices show in the USB configuration section too. When saving the settings and holding F11, there is no USB boot device but occasionally there is... I can't work it out and it's most annoying or a fault?
I have flashed the BIOS to the latest 10D release but that hasn't helped. Resetting defaults makes no odds either.
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks
Will

I have heard there is issues if you use a USB 2.0 cable or usb stick 2.0 it would not work 100% on USB 3.0 port for weird reasons such as installing windows 7 will just keep saying it couldnt detect the drivers thats because usb 2.0 has issues with 3.0 ports which idk why :/ so try using USB 3.0 on USB 3.0 while USB 2.0 on 2.0 than 2.0 on 3.0 then it should work

  • Help in remote diagnosis this X60! (Overheating, USB boot issues)

I just got it back from (a well respected aftermarket, not Lenovo) service, stress tested but nothing found, a hard disk just died in it with "sector 0" error.
    Symptoms, still:
    - When uploading to Box.com with Java multiuploader it overheats and - I guess as a protection - shuts down or resets.
    - When formatting an encrypted partition - the same.
    - When handling a very big Word document in LibeOffice - the same. Though, it opens the same document in MS Word 2007 flawlessly.
    Other issues:
    - Hiren's Boot [USB] doesn't work when there is no physical hard drive in it. (It works perfectly on another machine.)
    - FreeDOS says an "Invalid Opcode [code]"error when starting. (It also works perfectly on another machine.)
    Have latest [2.19] BIOS.
    What to do with it?

  • USB Boot Issue on Thinkpad X120e

I'm having trouble booting from USB flash drives on my X120e.
    The issue:
I have a usb drive plugged in with a bootable image, but when I select it from the BIOS menu, the screen just flickers and I end up back at the boot device selection menu.
I've tried different boot images, different flash drives, and different methods of copying over the ISO. (Unetbootin, and dd'ing the iso to the drive.) I plugged in a USB CDROM drive, and it booted the CD that was in the drive. Any ideas what could be going on here?
    Solved!

It sounds like you are not "burning" the ISO to the memory key properly.  In Windows, I use UltraISO to do that:
    1.  File -> Open, browse to the ISO
    2.  Bootable -> Write Disk Image, then click on the "Write" button.

  • Usb Boot issue - v570

I have deleted the hidden partition as well as the D partition and repartitioned the drive. (200 mb partition left in place)
However it seems that after this the laptop will no longer boot from USB. I have tried several USBs with different linux distributions and methods (unetbootin, image copy) and every time I select USB from the boot menu or put it first in boot order (the drive is recognized - even shows the name), the laptop just skips it and boots Windows anyways. Even the same USB that worked fine before doesn't boot after this partitioning!
Anyone know what could be the problem and how to fix it?

    Hello,
I'm not familiar with the X131e myself (the newest model I have in that series is an X120e), but if the X131e has UEFI firmware, you may need to disable the SecureBoot option in it in order to boot from the 8GB SanDisk USB flashd rive with Chromium OS on it.
Also, you might want to try a different brand of USB flash drive than SanDisk, just to see if that makes any difference.

  • X220: USB Boot Issues.

Hello Everyone! I just recieved my new X220 by UPS this morning and I've been loving using it, Windows 7 is not as bad as I had expected it to be (I've usedOS X since '05.) and the keyboard is great, and the trackpoint too. Overall I'm very impressed with the hardware so far. I am wanting to install linux on this because I miss the comfort of the bash shell. So I loaded up my flash drive with UNetBootin as I usually would do for a USB install since this has no cd drive. When I get the thinkpad splash screen I hit F12 to go into boot options and I selected the correct USB drive, but when I hit enter to boot from it...the screen goes black for a second, then comes back to the boot menu. Any ideas as to why it might not be working?
    Solved!

To anyone wondering, to do this, You must set the BIOS boot order to USB HDD as #1. Can't believe I forgot that *facepalm* got 11.04 up and running great now! Thanks for all of the help.

  • USB boot issue mpb 15" 2011

I have just received the new 2.2ghz 15" mpb yesterday.
    Everything is just Apple, prefect!
But when I connected my bootable usb drive and boot using the "Alt" key to select the drive, it showed up, but as soon i have selected it. It boots into a grey screen with the Apple logo standing still. (Tried selecting "Startup Disk" in System Preference too, no luck either)
To ensure the problem doesnt comes from the external drive, I tried to boot into it using my old white macbook, without a hitch. The os just load and pops right into OSX (10.6.7).
What could be the cause of this problem? And what could I do about it?
    Thanks!
    P.S. I am on Apple's 128GB SSD, 10.6.7

Your old bootable USB drive will not have all the drivers etc needed by the new 2011 MBP.
Try running the installer from the disk which came with your 2011 Mac on the external (while booted from internal or from the install disk itself).
This should put the drivers onto your external. Running the installer on top an existing install does not lose the data already there unless you chose to.
Another way would be to clone your external to another external, and then run the installer from your 2011 disk as a fresh install onto the USB, then use SetUp Assistant (automatic) at end of the install process to import everything from your clone of the external.

PS Note that there is a special and different 10.6.7 update for the 2011 MBPs. If you put this on your external USB I don't know how this plays with the earlier Macs. Don't think Apple did this before (special update for one model)

  • GS60-2QE (970M) Stuck at MSI Splash Screen

    Evening all,
Just went to use my laptop and I'm stuck at the MSI splash screen. I can't get to the BIOS or anything.
I haven't ever dropped it and it's always handled with care. Last night it was last used and has been working totally fine up until now.
Any ideas? I've only had it a month so don't want to open it up.
    Cheers
    Will

There's a reset hole at the right side of the body. Find a paperclip to poke it and power on again to see if it resets your laptop. If it's still stuck on BIOS logo, I am afraid you'll need to send it to MSI service centers.

  • Just received my GS60 2QE-040XFR: Big issues/Looking for help

    Hello,
I just received my GS60 ghost pro without any OS. Installed Win 8.1, drivers available in the hard drive, anti virus... and slowly but surely started having more and more BSOD (several types of error codes). At the same time, the laptop started having issues to reboot: looks like it's powering up during 1 second, then turning off, then trying to turn on 2 seconds after, turning off, etc... On the first tries it was able to boot onto the Win 8.1 from time to time (to have some more BSOD), now it's over, it can do that for minutes so I am not even trying anymore.
So I started looking on the internet for possible solutions, and my guess is that I have 2 different issues, I'd like to have some input about the community as I am quite new to MSI hardware:
Issue #1-The regular BSOD may come from the Killer Lan drivers. It looks like they have a some bad reputation, and I believe I started having BSOD as soon as I installed them. I'd like to format/install a new fresh Win 8.1 and not install this drivers anymore, unfortunately I cannot because of issue #2. Anyway, can anybody advice? If you believe the issue is coming from these drivers, is there any proper way to delete them and install better ones? which ones then?
Issue #2-Unfortunately for this one I believe I cannot do anything but sending the laptop back to MSI. My guess is that the laptop is not even able to reach the BIOS when booting. I'd like to clear the CMOS but I would need to open the laptop, which would end the warranty... Does anyone believe there is a possible workaround here?
    Hope someone can help...
Sorry for my poor english, that's not my native language.

Not sure if you are able to enter the OS now, but I'll still suggest you go to MSI's website to update your drivers.
    http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GS60-2QE-Ghost-Pro.html#down-driver
If all of the drivers are the latest ones, you can press CTRL+ALT+DEL to open Task Manager and go to Startup page to disable Killer Manager and restart again to see if it resolves the problem.

  • Boot issue/ USB Modem issue

I have a mac book that I just got about 3 weeks ago. I bought a USB modem because my mom still has dial-up, and I wanted to be able to use it at her house. everything worked just fine for a while, but then I started having lots and lots of truble with getting cut off. I checked the basics, used the smae phone cord that works perfectly for my mom's computer. ect ect. I figured out that I always get cut off if the modem is pluged into 1 usb port, and I don't get cut off if its pluged into the other. I'm already thinking mother bord problem, warintee repair. Then it starts that sometimes when I turn it on, it just comes up to a grey screen, and I have to reboot and zap the p-ram before it works.
SO I talk to the apple 800 number. they authorise me for a warintee repair, and I decide to take it into a local shop so I don't have to wait for the shipping turn around time. The local shop has returned my computer, didn't fix a dam thing and charged me $20. Said that they didn't get cut off, now I'm wondering if they had it pluged into the wrong USB port. said he thinks that the boot issue is a firm ware bug, and that I should wait for a firmware update to fix the problem. sugested putting my computer to sleep rather then turning it off. Does this sound like bull to anybody else???? any other sugestions, other then just calling apple back and shipping it in this time? has anybody else had problems like this that would make it looklike a firm ware bug?
    thanks guys!
    Mark

It seems to me that you have two different problems. You should look around these fora to see if there are similar problems like the one you report about boot up, and if they got the same answer. But regarding your modem problem, there are a couple of solutions that have been discussed, starting from line noise to a retrofitting of software for the modem. Check out this:

    Good luck

  • The Mac HD has booting issues - how do I make a clone that is free of these?

I spilled water on my MacBook Air (10.6.8) and now it has booting issues.
When I shut it down, the power button doesn't work to boot it. But when I close the lid, it powers up. However even when I shut it down AND close the lid, it keeps booting up and staying on.
So I have to send it for repairs.
I cloned the Mac HD using Carbon Copy Cloner and put the clone using Migration Assistant onto the new machine (MacBook Pro - 10.7.2). Now the MacBook Pro won't boot at all. Before this, it was working fine.
So I want to know how to make a clone of the Mac HD of the MacBook Air that won't have booting issues when I migrate the clone to another machine.
I have to make a clone of the MacBook Air before I send it off for repairs as the last back up is quite old and out of date.
Also the fact that the Mac HD of the MBA has booting issues affects the ability to access the Boot Camp (Windows 7 partition) as now I can't even boot the new machine. (But I am asking about Boot Camp in another section.)
It seems like a catch-22 situation. I can't fix the booting problem until I send it off to the repair center to get the computer fixed. And yet the booting problem is preventing me from making a usable clone of the Mac HD.
I think the booting problem is a software problem because the MacBook Pro was working perfectly before I migrated the Mac HD of the MBA onto it, The MBP is only two days old. I migrated another Mac HD backup  (one I made before the booting issues came up) onto the MBP on the first day I bought it and the MBP worked fine.
Do you think I will just have to clone things separately manually? I mean should I format an external hard drive, plug it in the USB port, and transfer the files I need to save? What files/folders should I save? Can I move folders or do I have to move files? I have many files in Desktop, Downloads, Documents. I also want to save my applications. I want to save the BookMarks of Opera, Firefox.
Will this take a long time? I have used about 200 GB of the MBA's hard drive.
    Any advice? Thanks.
I don't use Time Machine and am not confident about using it. Will it be substantially different to CCC in the way it clones files? Will a Time Machine clone after migration contaminate the second computer with booting issues?
I am not so worried about the booting issues on the second computer. I know it's from the faulty clone and nothing to do with the machine itself. I can take it to Apple Genius Bar and they will probably be able to reinstall a new operating system on the machine and I can start from scratch, I think. I am more worried about how to save and restore my data from the old machine. Thanks for any advice.

Ok, you used Migraine Assistant to try to transfer the account from the clone drive to the MBP and it didn't work, that's ok, it can be fixed by command r booting into Lion Recovery and simply erasing and reinstalling Lion from Apple's servers. (AppleID)
I suggest you transfer the account data manually because the clone is a copy of a failing drive/corruption, use the same name in System Preferences >Accounts, drag and drop files transfer and hold option key, click on Purchases in crapStore to redownload to the new machine, install other programs from fresh sources. Cleaner machine that way. So that shoudl fix the MBP.
in the future, try to avoid Apple's "answers" like Migraine Assistant as much as possible, it's really not reliable in any sense in actuality.
So I want to know how to make a clone of the Mac HD of the MacBook Air that won't have booting issues when I migrate the clone to another machine.
You can't boot a clone of OS X from another type Mac on another type Mac, only the same exact machine model.
In your case the Migraine Assistant didn't work, so you'll have to manually install.
Also the fact that the Mac HD of the MBA has booting issues affects the ability to access the Boot Camp (Windows 7 partition) as now I can't even boot the new machine. (But I am asking about Boot Camp in another section.)
Well it's possible that Windows or something messed up the GUID partition map of the Mac, why it has booting issues. Likely why Migraine Assistant didn't work.
You'll have to set up BootCamp again on the new MBP machine, talk to Microsoft about validation on the new machine and return your Windows files, programs from fresh sources.
Likely you got malware and it was trying to write to the boot sector of the Mac, mistaking the MBR portion of the GPT for a full Windows one. This also happens when Mac users try to install Linux on their Mac's.
Unless you need full hardware performance, you really should look at virtualization software like VMFusion, Parallels Desktop or even VirtuaBox (might be outdated) and run Windows in a window on OS X instead. Much easier to recover from malware that way.
It seems like a catch-22 situation. I can't fix the booting problem until I send it off to the repair center to get the computer fixed. And yet the booting problem is preventing me from making a usable clone of the Mac HD.
Well if you make a clone, it's going to be junk any.
What you need to do is fix the new MBP machine first then use Firewire Target Disk Mode (firewire 800/400 cable and adpater if needed) and grab a copy of your files off the sick Mac or off the sick clone.
The drive is likely fine, it's just not booting and that could mean some sort of malware/drive/data corruption.
You'll have to install third party software on the new fixed MacBook Pro to read the NTFS drive format of the Windows 7 bootcamp parittion when the sick MacAir is in Firewire Target Disk Mode.

  • Mac Pro Boot Issue

    Mac Pro - "Quad", 2 X 2.66Ghz; 5GB RAM; OS X 10.5.6
Mac Pro will not boot. It powers up to the grey Apple logo screen. The progress circle spins for about 3 seconds, then powers itself off.
This past week I came back from two weeks off. The first morning back I noticed my Mac was sluggish at times and freezing for a few seconds here and there. When Time Machine backups would kick in, the whole system would be unresponsive for minutes at a time. After turning off all other equipment in my office, I could detect a tell-tale "click click, spin" type noise coming from one of my two internal drives (one for OS and a second for backups).
I tracked the noise to the boot drive and guessing it was about to go out, I ordered a replacement Samsung Spinpoint 750GB. Good thing, because the next day when I came in to work my machine was having worse problems. IF it would boot, it would hang after a few minutes of use. If it would not boot, it would power up to the grey Apple logo, the progress circle would spin a few seconds, the power itself off.
I waited another day and the new drive arrived. I pulled the old OS drive, installed the new one, then dumped our standardized clone image on the drive (using CCC). After the clone was complete, I booted up on the drive, tested it out for a couple of hours and verified that it was working as expected. Next I copied data over to my drive from my backup drive. Everything looked fine.
Three days later, I come in to find my Mac will no longer boot. Grey Apple logo, spinning, etc.. I power off and boot from my external diagnostic drive (OS X 10.5.5). It will not boot. I remove both internal drives and try another boot from the external diagnostic drive. It boots up fine. Shutdown. Remove the backup drive (drive bay 2) and try to reboot from the diag drive once again. It will not boot. Remove the OS drive (drive bay 1) and it boots to the diagnostic drive fine (note: no internal drives are installed at this point). Shutdown. Install the OS drive into drive bay 2 and it then boots to the diagnostic drive just fine.
So now I have booted to my external diag drive and can see that the OS drive is showing on the Desktop; however a pop-up error stating there is a problem has appeared. I try to verify the OS drive using Disk Utility and it stops about 2 seconds into the process with a "Filesystem verify or repair failed" error. The OS drive will then not mount.
I restart booting back to the external diag drive. The OS drive shows up on the Desktop with the same pop-up error message as before.
I run Tech Tool Pro from the diag drive and it comes back with a File Structure error of "Type List Offset Is Invalid" and "No method for Tech Tool Pro to repair a corrupt file". I have a surface scan and drive hardware test running now, but on a 750GB it will be a WHILE.
So here is my predicament... I can understand my original OS drive having problems. It was at least 3 yrs old and has been run quite hard. But what are the odds that I would replace it with a brand new drive running a verified to be good cloned disk image AND have almost the exact same boot issues on the new drive that I had on the old one?
I have taken my original OS drive and hooked it up to external cases and sata-to-usb adapters to make sure that it was actually dead and it is. It will not spin up properly and makes lots of clicking noises. However, having a similar boot issue with a brand new drive has me worried something may be wrong with the Mac Pro hardware also. The new OS drive ran fine for a few days and only had these problems today.
    Any guesses?

Here is my own "cookie cutter" template to this type of problem.
Insure your UPS is working properly and that you have 1300VA to start with.
Run Apple Hardware Test of course.
CCC has been updated so make sure latest (it auto checks probably already).
Do you have Windows? run diagnostics from there, much better.
I settled on WD drives and use WD Diagnostic and has saved a drive.
Avoid Barracudas, seems even their 1TB is also suffering early failures (the 1.5TB was suffering from firmware problem).
Check for reviews and drive upgrade DB on AccelerateYourMac.
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/
I know the F1 got a lot of early praise but they aren't compatible with Apple Pro RAID card and may have other issues.
If you want a fast low-cost drive, WD Cavair 640GB $69.

I have seen more than a couple of similar stories from people going away for 1-2 weeks and coming home to system that won't work properly. Hopefully people shutdown and unplug, or shutdown and have UPS, but it is strange to say the least.
Resetting SMC is a good idea but best done with 2008 model by leaving it unplugged for a full night 8-12 hrs. and not just 5 minutes. contrary to Apple tech article. For yours, there is a small physical button accessed by pulling drive tray #4 (easier to see if it is on its side and you have flashlight!)

Boot Mode Should be set to Legacy
Boot Priority Should be set to Legacy First
UEFI Boot should be set to Disabled
    Quick Boot should be Disabled
StartUp device Menu prompt should be Disabled
    Quick Boot Should be Disabled
    USB Boot should be Enabled
    Secure boot Should be Disabled
Once everything are Set, make sure to save all changed by hitting F10 and Enter for Yes
After Hitting enter It will Restart and You will have to keep on tapping F12
this should pull up the Boot Menu letting you select where to boot.
If not succesful pulling up the boot menu after the restart, Power Drain the System and turn it on while hitting F12 Again.
