Gtk3 apps in XFCE

Hi guys, I recently updated Arch and I got the new gtk3 stuff. All would be fine except for the fact that now, my gtk2 apps use a theme and the gtk3 ones use another (ugly) one. I searched the forum and I basically found that I should wait for gtk3 and gtk2 to become armonic or gtk2 apps use the gtk3 libraries. So, I post the workaround I used, hoping saomebody could find it handy. Now I have gtk3 apps using the Adwaita theme and gtk2 using the theme I normally use. The difference with the solutions posted in the forums is that I use Adwaita and the gtk2 theme I wnat to use, and not the Clearlooks that you get when using Adwaita.
All you have to do is install "gnome-themes-standard" to have the Adwaita theme.
Then, being root, go to:
/usr/share/themes
And copy the Adwaita folder to some place you like, so you have a backup, just in case.
Then, enter the Adwaita folder and remove the gtk2.0 folder you'll find in.
Go back to:
/usr/share/themes
And enter the folder of the theme you like to use (or to the folder you have in ~/.themes) and copy the folder gtk2.0, then paste it in the Adwaita folder.
And that's it. Now when you restart your machine (well, i restarted it for other reasons, so maybe you just have to restart the session), gtk2 will look with the theme you like and gtk3 with the default Adwaita, and not looking like some windows 95 crap.
Hope it helps.
Good bye.

seems to be a "cleaner" solution and works fine too.
That works almost fine for me in XFCE. When i enable compiz with gtk-window-decorator borders DO appers but there are no buttons for minimze, maximize and close though i have enabled them in gconf-editor. If i choose metacity in fusion-icon the buttons appear. Any tip how can i get buttons on compiz with gtk-wnidow-decorator?
If I remember correctly (youll need to research this a little), there is a bug with compiz 0.8.8 and gtk-window-decorator that causes the buttons not to show up in the titlebar. I had this exact same problem about 4 months ago back when I used XFCE and compiz, and this among other things caused me to switch to the stability of Openbox. I think using the dev version of compiz will fix your problem, but since the dev version is a complete rewrite, you may have stability problems in other ways.
You are right. Now i use compiz-core-git and the problem disappears. Thanks.

  • Issue with Gtk3 apps in KDE4

I am also having this same issue with Ubuntu for some reason.
I recently got an arch Linux install up and going on my new laptop, but I am having one huge issue
I have the oxygen-gtk3 packages installed for both my Arch and Ubuntu install. Theoretically it should work, but for some reason my GTK3 apps aren't being themed in KDE4, they're using that redmond-like fugly default theme.
How might I fix this, I've tried everything from symlinking to compiling it again, nothing seems to work.
I suspect it might be an auto-start application to apply them that isn't working.

yngwin wrote:Is there any reason to use Gtk3 apps? Personally I find it easier to just stick with Gtk2 ones for now, since Gtk3 is still going through growing pains.
Well lets put it this way
I'm not gonna switch out Empathy for Pidgin (Pidgin stores passwords in plaintext in a easily accessible folder/file unless you needlessly use a kwallet plugin, which you shouldn't need to do.Empathy does not store said passwords in plaintext, and I believe it uses the Gnome Wallet).
Alot of programs got updated to gtk3, and require gtk3 themes. Guess how many gtk3 themes exist that aren't recolors/crappy edits of the default one...not a whole ton.
Ubuntu actually requires GTK3 now with Unity or even with Gnome. Alot of other distros will likely follow suit.
I could stick with GTK2 if Arch were still my secondary distro, but I now have a dedicated machine for Arch and I don't use it too often. I just tested the theme engine for oxygen-gtk3 on it to see if it worked, and like my Main Ubuntu/Debain Sid machine which I'm using the same problem with the Win98-esque theme on GTK3 apps in KDE occured.
I'm gonna try that fix you mentioned Teho, see if it works. It's obviously not a distro-specific problem.
Hawt damn Teho! Your solution worked like a charm! I could honestly hug you right now, you've fixed the last issue currently plauging both my Arch and Ubuntu installs. Thanks!
How do I change this topics prefix to solved?

  • [solved]Garbled screen with QT apps in Xfce/Gnome

After a big upgrade a few days ago I get a garbled screen whenever I focus a window with a Qt app in Xfce, like VLC or VirtualBox. If I focus (by clicking on titlebar/ or select from taskbar) a non-Qt app the screen returns to normal.  I could not capture the screen corruption with scrot so I used a very crappy cam:
    normal:
    garbled:
I see no error messages in Xorg.0.log (or any other log). I don't know which configs /packages are relevant to post here.
    update 1:
Someone with Gnome seems to have the same problem
    update 2:
After restarting X VLC works without the problem, but when I start VirtualBox (archlinuxfr/virtualbox_bin 3.0.2-2) the problem reappears for both VirtualBox and VLC.
    update 3:
Compositing seems to be involved. If I turn it off the problem disappears, not a real solution, but at least I can use my apps.
    xorg.conf
    Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "0"
    EndSection
    update 4:
Workaround is to downgrade both libgl and ati-dri to version 7.4.4-1 .

Might be an idea, but there are so many packages involved that could be the cause. B.t.w. I tried the aur/x86-video-radeonhd-git driver but that didn't help.

  • GTK3 apps ugly since yesterday (either upgrade or package removal!)

I have an issue where GTK3 apps (spacefm & file-roller as examples) are looking messed up since yesterday. It is not GTK theme related, as it looks the same for root. I use openbox, and trimmed some unused packages from my system yesterday. Hopefully I just removed something that wasn't shown as a dependancy when it really should have been!
See below for a screenshot of GTK2 vs GTK3. The gtk3 title bar area and close button function, but there's no real window decoration. It's odd!
EDIT: as someone else has the same issue... it was likely the updates at fault, and not me removing some packages

easytag is easy enough to rebuild against gtk2, I'll upload a PKGBUILD for that shortly.
goffice0.8 in extra uses gtk2. I use it (with some modifications to remove the gconf crap) with abiword-minimal in the AUR.
    zenity-gtk2 is in the AUR.
Dunno about the others, I don't use them.
    EDIT: easytag-gtk2.

  • After last upgrade, GTK3 apps look abnormal

    Here's how:
    http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/3305/75975390.png
What has changed and how do I modify my theme for the changes?

    triplesquarednine wrote:
I found a solution   (that works for me, anyway!)
    find /usr/share/YOURTHEME/gtk-widgets.css ... open and edit it;
    you are looking for the theme's background color, which should be somewhere in the 1st hundred lines. Something like this;
    GtkWindow {
    color: @fg_color;
/* inherit the color from parent by default */
    color: inherit;
    background-color: @transparent; <-------- here it is :)
Your theme will list a specific color code like #cdcdcd, #eee or something like that. Change it to match mine; @transparent
Apparently, for some reason or another the Gnome-devs decided to break themes, yet again :\  For some reason all text now uses your background colour (regardless of widget) which was hugely annoying ~ that is, right up until i realized i could just change the background to be transparent   After saving the file, you can simply bring up a gtk3 app (make sure there are no other instances of that application) to view changes.
EDIT: ... you may also want to launch gtk3 apps from the terminal, as you may find some errors with your theme that could easily be fixed at the same time. Most of the errors i have seen are related to gtk 3.6 expecting 'px' behind certain values/numbers (not unlike the gtk 3.4 upgrade).
    cheerz
Weird, as for me this didn't fix the problem.

  • GTK3 apps refusing to start

I've switched from LXDE/openbox to Compiz/emerald and am having a strange problem with GTK3 apps (tested with nm-applet and nautilus).
    Starting from a terminal gives the following error;
    (nm-applet:1445): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk-widgets.css:1217:17: Expected ')'
(nm-applet:1445): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:102:42: Failed to import: Error opening file: No such file or directory

(nm-applet:1445): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:102:42: Failed to import: Error opening file: No such file or directory
the application is unable to start and just hangs, taking up 100% of one of my cpu cores. I've had a look at the gtk-widgets.css but can't see where there's a missing ')' (its clearly not at 1217:17).
I'm currently using the Think_Correctly_GTK theme which includes GTK2 and 3 themes, both of which worked fine under LXDE.
    If I change the GTK2 to a different theme and try to start again I get;
    (nm-applet:1458): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk-widgets.css:1217:17: Expected ')'
(nm-applet:1458): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:102:42: Failed to import: Error opening file: No such file or directory

** (nm-applet:1458): WARNING **: Failed to show notification: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.Notifications was not provided by any .service files
Same theme parsing error, however now both nm-applet and nautilus start, if I then switch the GTK2 theme back they're ok until I close and reopen nautilus.
Any idea how to resolve this apart from using a different theme?

Hi theafroguy, Welcome to the Forums.
It may be worth trying again off and on.
The forums themselves go off line for varying degrees of time. A thread (???) said Apple was working on it. It's been going on for weeks. A real PITA.

  • X dies/crashes gracefully - using Evince & Gedit (possible gtk3 apps)

A couple days ago I went to move an evince window and then X just died. No segfault and nothing in dmesg, Today I'm using gedit (two windows open) and doing some text editing and the same thing happened. I was able to reproduce the issue about 3 or 4 times. Simply trying to highlight text or clicking on an area of the window is enough to trigger this "crash." startx's exit code is 0 after one of these "crashes".
I am not really sure what is going on nor how to troubleshoot this.I'm thinking it might have to do with gtk3 apps, but the only gtk3 apps I use are evince and gedit.
Any help or guidance would be great!

    Simply a document viewer
    local/gtk3 3.4.0-1

and of course I'm using testing

Same thing happening on my machine. Noticed it with transmission-gtk and nautilus!
It *seems* to go away if I disable any custom theming. However I haven't been testing it for long enough to be sure.
Edit: If I turn the Adwaita theme on again it crashes immediately after I try to move the Nautilus window quickly. Doesn't happen with the theme option empty in ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini.
Edit: I am not using testing!

  • Running GNOME apps in Xfce; not detecting GTK+ theme

I primarily use Xfce4 as my desktop environment, but with some GNOME apps such as file-roller and gedit. It appears that GNOME apps no longer detect the current GTK+ theme while using Xfce. They just use the horrible, blocky default theme. This seems to have started after an update about a month ago, and reinstalling the system didn't fix it. Has anyone else had this problem? Any help is appreciated.

    Kinux wrote:
I had the same problem. Searching the forums, the solution for me was to :
    pacman -S gnome-themes-standard
And then a symbolic link to gtk3 theme :
    ln -s /usr/share/themes/Adwaita/gtk-3.0 ~/.config/
This way the new gedit or fileroller use the Adwaita theme while normal Xfce programs use the one I set in Appearance settings.
    Hope this helps you too.

I've noticed that too, it doesn't happen always but occasionally mpv remains active even after program is closed, unfortunately I don't know how to fix it. On exit gmp-video sends stop command to fifo file, that should first stop the video then delete fifo and output file. And it always stops video playback, but mpv for some reason remains in memory. What's interesting when you click the Stop button in the middle of a video, then check for activity with pidof mpv it will in that case exit properly, not remain active. In both ways command sent to fifo is the same but result is different. Probably I did something wrong...
In case someone is willing to check the method it's here:

  • [SOLVED] GTK3 Apps Look Crappy in XFCE4

    Hello,
I've been running XFCE4 for a while, and I have several GTK3 applications that don't look very good, such as Glade (extra/glade 3.10.0-2), or even things as simple as my ScreenShot scripts, that I have bound to <Print> and <Alt>Print.
Here is a screenshot of my ScreenShot script.
and a screenshot of Glade 3.10.0.
MOD EDIT : follow image posting rules -- Inxsible
    http://themattbeballin.doesntexist.com/ … deGTK3.png
Now, I did think it was part of my script using Zenity for my screenshot, until it did it in Glade too.
I tried using these fixes I found in the forums.
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 88#p935988
    and
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 73#p914873
Neither of which actually worked. Maybe it was just my computer, but neither seemed to have worked. Are there any fixes for this issue?

  • [solved] gtk3 themes for gtk3 apps, without installing gnome3

After executing "pacman -Syu", transmission was upgraded to a newer version, but it no longer has the "Clearlooks" gtk2 interface wich I installed witch pacman and selected it with "lxappearance" because I don't have gnome2 or 3 installed. Now, transmission has an ugly gtk3 interface that looks like windows 95. But how can I install ans select a gtk3 theme, without installing gnome3 ? (because I only want to keep openbox and xmonad installed, and no other WM or DE)
It says on wiki.archlinux that "gnome-tweak-tool" won't work if gnome3 is not installed...
It also tried to install the "librsvg" package, and the Newlooks theme, and I've edited "~/gtk-3.0/settings.ini" to add:
    gtk-application-prefer-dark-theme = false
    gtk-theme-name = Zukitwo
    gtk-fallback-icon-theme = gnome
... and after reboot, Transmission doesn't have the "Newlooks" gtk theme... it still has the old looking theme

I am facing the same problem. I've created ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini file:
    [Settings]
    gtk-theme-name = elementary
    gtk-fallback-icon-theme = elementary
    gtk-toolbar-style=GTK_TOOLBAR_ICONS
Someone also wrote that copying gtk-3.0 folder should enable gtk3 theme, but this also failed.
    cp -r /usr/share/themes/elementary/gtk-3.0/ ~/.config/gtk-3.0/

  • After recent updates, selecting with mouse in GTK3 apps failing

I can't pin this problem down, but it maybe seems to affect only GTK3 applications such as Bluefish, SpaceFM, Remmina, etc.
After a while, I can't use a mouse drag to select text - the cursor just stays put. However, double-left clicking can still select all the text.
I'm using a fully updated system with the GTK3 theme package: clearlooks-phenix-gtk-theme-git 3.0.15.0.g8ed3afb-1
The problem started 2 - 3 days ago I reckon.
Hope that somebody else has a better idea about what might be going on!
Edit: PS: Restarting the applications makes things work as expected again - for a while.

Phew, I'm not alone then! Makes editing with Bluefish very frustrating indeed.
I should also have mentioned that I'm using Openbox, Tint2, and Parcellite as a "desktop environment".

  • [SOLVED] Getting theme errors after a recent upgrade in gtk3 apps

I have recently started getting errors like these after a recent upgrade.
(nautilus:12329): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme parsing error: *-*:*:*: Not using units is deprecated. Assuming 'px'.
Full error while opening nautilus can be see here. http://sprunge.us/IQOM
    Relevant pacman log: http://sprunge.us/YYgY
    ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini :  http://sprunge.us/VJMT
I have tried few themes (Fear, Hope, Aldabra), all seem to give me this error. Also, theme Fear broke (gave white text with white background) after the upgrade.
Can anyone else reproduce this error?
If there is any theme that doesn't have problems with updated system, please share.

    Apparently yes:

There are a couple other threads as well - some have alleged solutions, or at least some themes that work.

  • Font in GTK2 apps are not using font smoothing in cinnamon. GTK3 does.

    Hi,
My GTK2 apps like GIMP, chromium fonts are not really using font smoothing but GTK3 apps look fine.
    Any help is appreciated.

Chazza wrote:Does the following application help at all? Link: http://qt-apps.org/content/show.php/Qt5 … ent=168066
Yes, unfortunately this did not fix the problem. I did put the environmental variable in .profile and relogged, the result was unfortunately the same. I've managed to fix fonts in Clementine using qtconfig-qt4 after some fiddling, but applications like Docky and Chromium still have the monospace font.

Ah, my bad. Do you know of a way to fix that problem anyway?

  • GTK wiki - A way to set themes for GTK2 and GTK3 in XFCE

    Hi,
I think I have something to add to the GTK page of the Arch wiki but I wanted to confirm if this works for others or if I just found an exception to the rule.  Anways, I was trying to figure out why some of my apps on XFCE were looking different than others and I came too the GTK page to find the section explaining that XFCE tries to use the same theme for both GTK 2 & 3 which causes errors if the theme you use isn't for both.
Since I could not find a theme that I liked a lot that worked for both, I tried to manually fix the issue.  The way I did so was by simply making a new directory in the themes folder and copying all the files from the GTK 3 theme I liked and then replacing the gtk-2.0 folder with the folder of the theme for GTK2 that I liked.  This seems to be working flawlessly so I was wondering if I should add it to the wiki in the section that mentions the few themes that work for both GTK 2 & 3.
I wasn't sure if the GTK wiki should have more XFCE specific information added or if this would be more appropriate in the XFCE wiki but I was thinking that since there is already mention of the problem and a potential solution on the GTK page, it might make sense to add it there.
Can anyone confirm that this works for them as well or does anyone have objections to the addition to the GTK wiki?

I am not that familiar with this bug because I do not use xfce. But I would say adding it as a tip or similar on the xfce page would be the better place to put it as opposed to the gtk wiki.
