H 264 speed

I have just submitted my PPBM6 test results and I see my H264 speed is very slow, which part of the pc affects this the most?

It is mainly number of cores, clock speed and amount of L3 cache and to a lesser degree memory speed.
In your case you are running an i7-930 with a core speed of 1603.7 MHz on the first 3 cores and 2940 MHz on the last core. BCLK 133.6 with 8 MB L3 cache and with 24 GB memory. I don't know what causes the different core speeds, but normally all cores would run at the same speed. Also your memory runs at 1066 speed.

  • IPhoto 11: Best practice to export a slideshow

    Hi all,
after reading some posts on this matter I'm almost more confused than beginning so I hope someone can help me with "latest" best practices.
Hi have iPhoto 11 and normally I'm making slideshows for watching on HD TV.
For DVD burning I'm using  Toast 11 (instead of iDVD).
Then, considering that converting in DVD I'll loose in quality, which are the best export parameters I should use ?
I've been suggested to use (I may have transalted something wrongly as I'm using the Italian version):
    Export -> Personal Setting
Keeping "Export for Quick Time usage" -> Options
    Under Video tab:
    Compression: H.264
Speed Frequency: 25 (for PAL) with Automatic below
    Compressor Quality: Max
    Codify: Quick (single)
    Under Dimension tab:
    Dimension: 1920x1080 HD
Thanks in advance for your advice here.
    Regards
    Giancarlo

OK, so let me repeat just to be sure I understood well.
Could you confirm that all parameters I'm using are OK but dimensions?
    About dimensions:
    a. use 720x526 when I'm burning a standard DVD for 4:3
    b. use 1024x576 when I'm burning a standard DVD for 16:9 .... is this feasible or just a. is available ?
    c. use 1280x720 or 1920x1080 when I'm burning a BR (for HD watching)
    Am I right ?
    Regards
    Giancarlo

  • Speeding up H.264 encoding

    Hello,
I'm looking for your current thoughts on speeding up H.264 encoding. I'm currently using FCE HD 3. Last night I made a 560x315, hour-and-twenty-minute web video for a client--it took over 14 hours to encode. Not the end of the world--usually I do 10-minute videos, but still...
I'm running a new G4 ibook (slow, I know) but am considering a MacBook Pro.
    1) Any system settings or RAM issues that might speed things up?
    2) Any thoughts on the open source x264 (just downloaded and will test this weekend)?
    3) It is really possible to distrubte the work amongst multiple computers (I'm using an Airport network with two other (older) Macs. Worth it?
Also, I've read that H.264 encoding is slower on the MacBook Pro as compared to the G5, apparently due to non-optimized code in Quicktime. Any experiences with this or rumors of when/if the software will be made to run faster? Is there a real hardware solution out there?
    Thanks!
    --Darin

Thanks for the replies. I went to the Apple store and purchased one, since there's no restocking fee. But playing with it last night, it definitely won't do what I want it to do. So, it's going back.
But, your note on upping processor performance has noticeably helped when I'm scrubbing video on my MB. It's more responsive now. Also, the encoding time improved. I had a sample 720p clip I am have testing against. After upping the processor (choosing "performance" over the default "normal") improved the encoding time from 65 to 48 minutes. That's a nice little boost. Thanks.

  • CPU/speed differences between Compressor settings - H.264 versus Mpeg-2

After setting up my 2.26 8-core Mac Pro for distributed processing for Compressor, I was able to get nice speeds using mpeg-2, but the h.264 codec seems to throttle back the speed of the compression.
For mpeg-2, Activity Monitor shows around 55% of the CPU being used for the process overall. For h.264, it shows around 15% CPU use, which is around the amount that would be used without distributed processing. I am using 8 instances in the qmaster setup.
Any ideas? I've tried some other settings and the mpeg ones (mpeg-1, mpeg-4) seem to take advantage of the speed while others (h.264, Uncompressed 8-bit) don't.

This sounds like its I/O bound. Open Activity Monitor, and check data read/sec and data written/sec in the Disk Activity tab. If the number is over like 100MB/sec, that could be whats holding you back, depending on the speed of your disk. If you are using a network volume, check the network tab. 1 instance seems to be good for 2 physical cores when doing H.264. 8 instances should max you out, unless your source is something like Uncompressed 10 bit and the reads are bottlenecking processing. In essence you have 8 instances trying to read data as fast as it can, which means no process reads it fast. So the instances are waiting around for data.

  • How to speed up render to h.264 in CS6? Adobe QT32 Server.exe causes long delay

(Before you say "Don't use AE to render to h.264; use AME!" – I'd love to, but AME isn't controllable from the command line / batch files the way aerender.exe is)
When I try to render a brain dead simple composition (30 seconds, black background with the word "DUMMY" centered), aerender takes nearly four minutes to complete. This is a Windows Server 2012 box with 32 CPUs (16 cores+16 HT), about ~60GB of memory and I believe it's on 10Gb ethernet. Turning multi-processing off doesn't have effect on the pause.
If I view the task in task viewer, NO CPU is being used and Adobe QT32 Server.exe is running. Analyzing the wait chain for aerender.exe says that a thread is waiting for network i/o to complete (I assume this is Adobe QT32 Server.exe, which uses TCP to talk to Quicktime). After about three minutes, the render continues (and goes blazingly quick, as expected).
    WTF?
How can I get around this long, useless pause? Is there an alternative h.264 output module that doesn't use Quicktime?
    Thanks in advance!

    The flaw is here:
This is a Windows Server 2012 box
Adobe desktop programs are generally not officially supported on server operating systems. Whatever issues you have are probably due to things like local users vs. network users, disk quota, specific group policies or plain and simple another process occupying or blocking the same port that the QT server is using. In any case, this is nothing we can figure out for you. You have to sit down and work your way through the server's administration tools, turn off stuff, change user permissions. Check the event logs for conflicting processes or use tools like Sysinternals' Process Monitor or Wireshark to track down port collisions and otehr problems.

  • H.264 mov files from Canon 5D Mark II running at incorrect speed?

What is causing the mov. files recorded at 25 fps Imported from a Canon 5D Mark II
PAL to run at 2.5 fps on the Timeline of Premiere Pro ? And it looks like it.This all happened after the Firmware Upgrade 2.0.4
The camera is recording at the right speed according to the LCD and it runs correctly in Premiere Elements ?.
Message was edited by: Bob Dix

Interesting approach., Canon seem to think it might be the camera ? Which I
doubt because the mov H264 files are easily opened in Premiere Elements and
work very well., I am reluctant to send it back as I think the Problem is in
    Premiere but, where ?

Ps . The problem is not fixed, Canon Australia is looking at the issue, the Canon EOS 5 D Mark II is recording at 25 fps. They believe the problem is within Adobe Premier Pro ? Perhaps even a computer problem any ideas.

  • Is it possible to speed up (not eliminate) Lion iCal animations?

I want to speed up the month-to-month and year-to-year "page flip" animations in Mac OS X Lion's iCal.  I do not want to eliminate the animation completely (by holding down the option key while selecting "Next Page" or "Previous Page" from the View menu, or by installing iCal Classic Page Flip).
Like all Mac OS X animations, I want to preserve this feature but also make it faster.  These animations help my brain process that a transition is being made.  However, half a second is too long to wait.  At the other extreme, the absence of a transition yields a long wait: it takes my brain about two seconds to recognize that a change has been made to my screen and eyesight re-adjusted to it.
So, what .plist or other file controls the iCal page flip animation?  If it's in com.apple.ical.plist, then it's not clearly labeled.
    Any ideas?  Thanks in advance!

I wasn't really referring to controlling the amount of CPU each application might use.
What I meant was : If I have 2 MacBook Pros each with Intel Core 2 Duo 2,53GHz Processors, could I, by linking the computers using FW800, essentially create a virtual Quad Core 2.53GHz, thus reducing my export times in iMovie by a factor of nearly 2 (there will be lag)?
This would mean I wouldn't have to buy Turbo.264 HD, meaning that the quality of the output would be the best it could be.
    Any suggestions?

  • Crawl Problems in H.264

    Greetings.
I just exported a 5-minute sequence from HDV 1080i to H.264 (not with Compressor). The .mov file when played back has problems. The images sometime move clumsily across the screen. The crawl portions, which contain English text in Helvetica font size 23, move at times erratically from right to left. The scrolling credits at the end also appear to jump or flicker at times.
Are there pre-sets for crawl or scroll text: special fonts, speed, use of Motion or output modes?
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

  • How to Reset the Sata Link Controller for Full Sata 3 speeds on an OCZ Agility 3

So I purchased a new OCZ Agility 3 drive, installed it into the main bay of my 2012 Macbook Pro, and the drive was running at half speed. I called OCZ and spoke to the guys about how to resolve this issue, they were very knowledgeable, but they had no ideas how to make thier Linux Live Tool work on the Mac, which gives us the ability to reset the controller. Here's what I did to get the full speeds out of my OCZ Agility 3.
    - You will need a Windows computer, or the ability to create and install Windows on a Bootcamp partition on your Mac.
    - Thumb Drive
    - Lots of Patience
    1. Open Disk Utility and create one partition on your thumb drive under MS-DOS Fat 32. Click the Options tab and select “Master Boot Record.”
    2. Go to the OCZ forum and download the older Linux Live Tool version: OCZ_Tools_316-old.zip. From my experience, the newer version doesn’t work on the 2012 Macbook Pro.
3.Download the “Universal USB Installer” for Windows, and follow the steps to install the ISO to your Thumb Drive using the instructions located on the OCZ Forum. http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?99275-NEW!-Bootable-Linux -based-tools-for-OCZ-SSD-s&p=714047&viewfull=1#post714047
    4. Once the ISO is successfully copied to the Thumb Drive, insert the USB stick into your Mac with the OCZ SSD installed in the Main Bay, Power On, and hold down the “Option” key. You should see a yellow hard disk icon that says “Windows,” select it and press enter.
    5. Once the OCZ Tool loads up, click the “Green Arrows” to put the drive into Sata II mode. Shutdown the computer, power on, and check the System Profiler. The drive should be running at Sata II speeds.
    6. Shutdown the computer and boot into the OCZ Tool, and click on the “Red Arrows.” This will reset the controller to its default mode of Sata III (Sata 6 Mode).
    7. Check the speed of the drive using the disk speed test of your choice. The drive should now be running at full speed.
The biggest accomplishment here was actually getting the OCZ Linux Live Tool to load on a 2012 Macbook Pro. The newer version of the tool doesnt support the USB 3.0 drivers, so you loose the funtion of your trackpad and keyboard or bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
**Note: Black Magic Disk Speed Test Version 2.0 may give you lower numbers than expected due to the compression method in testing the drive. I would prefer using XBench or Disk Speed Test Version 1.0**
***Here's a link to a thread that explains how to properly install your OS onto the drive. If not done correctly, this can also cripple the speed of the drive.***

I can almost see a big grin appearing in Bob's avatar...
Hopefully his reply has given you a clue already?
    If not, some explanation:
Many settings in the standard "Media" panel (for both video and audio) don't apply for publications that need to go the Folio-way. This panel is mainly concerned with lovely Flash stuff, but apart from the Poster frame and the Markers, it is useless for Folio's.
A quick guide: create a video with the necessary codec (H.264 for video, MP# or AAC for audio) at the required pixel size (exact width/height). Simply Place the file in InDesign, but don't scale it (or recreate and place a properly sized new video afterwards). Choose what to do with the Poster frame (and maybe some Markers), but all other settings are done in the Overlay Creator.
Check Bob Bringhurst's Tutorials and his DPS Tips app for more info. But I guess you get the idea now.

  • Media Encoder will export H.264 720 but not 1080

I'm on Windows 7, using Premiere and After Effects.
I've installed updates for the OS, Quicktime, and Adobe applications.  I've, opened Premiere under a different user, tried holding shift and alt on opening Premiere and uninstalled  Premiere and After Effects.  I even tried taking the Media Encoder directory out of the applications directory, then reloading Premiere and After Effects (no joy). The Media Encoder directory didn't rebuild itself.
The problem is specific to exporting H.264 in 1920x1080.  It doesn't matter if it progressive or interlace, or any of the other variables, up or down.  1080 fails and 720 will export.
Does anyone have another suggestion for me to try?
    Thanks in advance.

I was able to uninstall Media Encoder by uninstalling a long list of CC applications; Prelude, InDesign, Flash, After Effects, Premiere, Speed Grade, and Photoshop.  In addition to uninstalling the applications, I did a search on my drive for any file with "media encoder" in the name or directory and deleted them.  That search, by the way, was the only way I was able to confirm how many applications were connected to Media Encoder.  There was suprisingly little on the subject in the Adobe library.
When I reinstalled Premiere, Media Encoder came along with it.  Media Encoder is now working again.

  • CS6-Media Encoder Fails on long (1hr +) H.264 render

    Windows 7 - 64 Bit. 8 GBs RAM
Adobe Pr and other programs on C: internal Plenty of hard disk space left 300+GBs
External high speed 7200 RPM RAID 1 where the media is stored.
External high speed 7200 RPM Non RAID drive for rendering to be written to.
    Both drives are eSata.
CS6 Pr and Media Encoder 6.0.0.382 (OP update: It appears that has been an update to this version, I am going to download the updates and see if that fixes this.)
FOLLOW UP: It appears that the update did fix the problem. I have multiple workstations and was under the impression I had updated them all. I have not fully tested this yet, but for now, I consider it fixed.
Footage is a single capture of a lecture. 1 hr. 20 minutes.
Shot on Canon xf105 in MXF format at 1280x720 23.976p (US)
Footage goes together fine (many multiple file clips 'chained' or butted up against one another, as is done when you shoot a continuous take)
The footage plays fine in Pr in final form for export.
No special effects. one dissolve (intro title slide to lecture)
    Reproduceable problem:
    i export to Media Encoder.
I choose H.264 and Vimeo Wide Screen SD 23.976
The file exports about 2/3rds of the way, not the same place each time, and fails with no definitive error message. The log shows, "Export Error: Error compiling movie. Unknown error."
Rendered file to external drive (have more than one, have tried it on two, with same results)
All drives have plenty of disk space on them.
I tried cleaning the Media Encoder Media Cache. Same result.
I tried moving the cache files to an almost empty external disk. No change.
I broke the video into a 10 minute segment, it rendered just fine with the same settings.
This seems to be a bug in Media Encoder. Is there a fix for this? A workaround? My client would like a single long file of the presentation.
Could the 8 GBs of RAM be an issue? Not sure why it would. Or is this a known bug for Media Encoder?
I also had a second job today, similar in that I needed to take 6 multiple takes of the same person, drop them onto a timeline and render it to Vimeo for them to review. same issue. Got 13'05" into the compile and it failed.  So something is odd. I have compiled much longer footage before, that was done with this camera.

If you have done a complete reinstall, and ran the Adobe CleanScript CS5 (that is the latest), then a Repair Install should not be needed - it would do nothing.
For info, to do a Repair Install, one would insert the installation disc. When the installer module has loaded, it will survey one's system. If it finds the Adobe program(s), it will ask if you wish to Uninstall, or Repair Install. When one chooses Repair Install, it surveys the system again, for that program, and will replace, or correct any issues. This is usually MUCH faster, than doing an uninstall/reinstall.
Good luck, and not sure what else could be the cause.

  • H.264 doesn't seem to work... until I initiate a 3-way call

    Hello,
I seem to have a weird problem with iChat video conferencing. As the post subject indicates--I believe iChat doesn't automatically use H.264 (at least on my configuration) in two-way video calls but does it in multi-way calls, or more specifically after a multi-way call. I discovered it by:
    1. initiating a normal 2-way call - video's rather blocky, bandwidth use ~200 both ways
    2. adding a 3rd person to the call - video even blockier, still same bandwidth usage
    3. removing the 3rd person from the call - video suddenly gets much better (compared to the initial 2-way call, not only to the 3-way call!) with the same bandwidth usage - which makes me think it's H.264 that suddenly gets activated.
I get this with all of my iChat contacts (obviously I had them all check, I was just stunned by the sudden quality increase I got). I'm on a 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro so it's not a CPU speed issue. The only thing I can think of is that it might be due to the fact that I had migrated my system using Migration Assistant from a 12" PowerBook which might not have been H.264 capable (?) - at any rate I tried trashing iChat's .plists but to no avail.
I'd be very grateful for any ideas...

OK here's what the logs say--not surprisingly, it seems like the MacBook Pro is H.264 capable. What puzzles me is why iChat is looking into a "G4" file but I guess it doesn't matter much if it still finds it OK. I also tried starting a conference etc and having a look at the logs but the sheer amount of data spat out by iChat is rather daunting--is there anything specific I should be looking for?

  • What's the most effective way to speed up AVCHD video editing?

    Hello Everyone,
I'm having the same problem, my wife and I have a small wedding videography company, I film jobs on weekends when I'm not working full time and my wife stays home with our 2 year old daughter and edits during the week.
When jobs come in we both are using our macbook pro's for the import process because it takes SOOO long to import all the avchd clips.  We're filming with the Panasonic HMC40 shooting in 720/30p on Class 10 16GB SDHC Cards.
I have an early 2008 macbook pro, 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo 2GB of ram, and my wife has a 2010 unibody with a dual core i5 w/ 4GB of ram.
As a test, I imported an 8 minute and 47 second clip in my machine, and the import takes 20:39.  I went to my local apple store and ran the same import test on brand new machines and here are the results:
mbp Core 2 duo 2GB ram time: 20:39 (my machine)
mbp dual core i5 4GB ram time: 7:08 (my wife's machine)
mbp quad core i7 4GB ram time: 4:50
    mba core 2 duo 1.86Ghz 2GB ram SSD 64GB drive time: 12:17
imac quad core 2.7Ghz 4GB ram time: 4:54
    imac quad core 2.8Ghz 3GB ram 4:27
    mac pro 2.8Ghz 3GB ram 3:42
I watched the quad core i7 macbook pro's performance monitor, and at one point it had 63 iMovie threads running to import the footage.  The biggest bottleneck for importing avchd seems to be the processor.  With an import time of about have of the real time, that has the biggest appeal to me, but comes at a starting price of $1799 + tax, and is expensive.
What I'm looking for is the most cost effective way to cut down on import and export times for either new hardware or software.  I haven't tested the elgato h.264 HD encoder yet, nor have I tested the new Final Cut X.  Has anyone done this? What about Adobe Premier Elments or Premier Pro
Our compeditors are offering 'same day edit' services, and making basically a trailer of the events that happen at the ceremony, then editing them on site in a 3-4 hour time window between the ceremony and reception, then using a projector and screen to show that trailer at the beginning of the reception, usually added to the slide show.
That's the kind of thing that we want to be able to do for our customers, but also to cut down the massive amount of editing time it takes to get every finished product out the door.
What does everyone think?  Is the elgato h.264 HD encoder worth it?  Is there a more professional avchd / h.264 hardware / software solution that can speed up the import process faster?
I'd love to know everyone's thoughts.
    Thanks.
    Chris

    One thing you might consider...
Go to Final Cut Pro X.
In FCP 10, you can import AVCHD and begin editing immediately. You can edit natively in AVCHD if your needs are very simple, but most people would use FCP to "optimize" the AVCHD to ProRes 422, which is an intermediate codec like Apple Intermediate Codec, but provides higher quality. The optimizing to ProRes 422 as well as analyzing for stabilization, sound, and color takes place in the background if you have cores available.
But you can edit immediately, and as the optimized clips become available, FCP will automatically use them instead of the AVCHD clips.

  • Final Cut Pro X Export Speed Problems

I'm having problems getting any real processor speed out of my Final Cut Pro X exports. Whether I do a direct native Pro Res export straight from FCPX or send to compressor with the same settings, or even change them to H.264 or something else, i more often get processing that looks like the included picture, barely one processor being tapped. Sometimes ill get 50 percent which is probably all direct export is meant to use, seems like Qmaster distributed processing still doesn't work here. Once i get the file out and then bring that into Compressor 4 I get no issues, can get 50 percent with regular submit and full speed all cores running with Quickcluster submit. Any ideas why this is happening?
Just to be clear, these are native ProRes HQ clips, no effects, nothing, just selects I'm trying output, and since we can't do reference clips anymore, well....

TThe most common cause of this problem is that the media hasn't been imported properly and is still referencing a camera card or archive. If you press Cmd-E and no dialog appears, this can be one cause.
BTw, this is primarily a user to user forum, so no one here really cares if you go and use Premiere.
