HA on PI 1.3 on different VM specs

Hello,
i have two locations both of them have Cisco Prime Infrastracture 1.3
one of them is installed on Large VM and the other installed on Medium VM (different VM specs). my quesiton is: can i configure high availabitly function between the two PI on different VM specs?
Note: they are geographically separated.
thanks
Labib

The Secondary VM must be of equal size or larger.
See snippet and link below for clarification:::
The size of the secondary server must be larger than or equal to that of the primary server; for example, if the primary Cisco Prime Infrastructure server is the medium OVA, then the secondary Cisco Prime Infrastructure server must be the medium or large OVA.

  • How to transfer mailboxes between different feline species

    I use two iMacs: the main one at home, and a secondary one in my office.  When they both used to run Leopard (10.5.8), I was able to transfer mailboxes from my main iMac to my secondary iMac, so that my secondary iMac had all the email messages that I received on the main iMac.  I copied Mail folder in Library from the main iMac, and copied it to the same location in the secondary iMac.  When I started Mail on the secondary iMac, all the messages that I received on my main iMac were there.
    Now I upgraded my main iMac to the latest model, running Mountain Lion (10.8.5).  I found the "hidden" Mail folder, by using "Go to the folder:  ~/Library/Mail/V2/".  But when I copy the Mailboxes folder from this location, and copy it to the Mail folder in the secondary iMac (still running Leopard), replacing the "Mailboxes" folder inside it, none of the email messages that I received since I switched to Mountain Lion (and Mail v6) shows up, only messages that I received when I was still on Leopard (and using Mail 3.x).
    My question is:  How can I resume what I used to do, and transfer mailboxes from Mail on Mountain Lion to Mail on Leopard?  (Before you ask, no, I don't want to upgrade my secondary iMac to Mountain Lion, because that would be too cumbersome and costly on an old machine.)  I just need to know how I can transfer messages that I receive on Mountain Lion Mail to Leopard Mail.  Thanks.

    Okay, I have now properly exported the mailbox on my Mountain Lion iMac, transferred the exported mailbox to the Leopard iMac, and properly imported the mailbox, all within the respective Mail application.  The export appears to have gone smoothly, judging by the size of the mailbox.  And the importing procedure also went through all the right motions, but when I open the imported mailbox, it's completely empty.  It doesn't even contain the messages that I received before the switchover, as happens when I copy the mailboxes folder and transfer it to the old iMac.  So, either way, it doesn't work, but properly exporting and importing mailboxes appear to be worse.

  • [OSM] Dependency Across Different Service Bundle

    Hi All,
    Currently we are facing issue on configuring Dependency across different Service Bundle. We have 2 Service Bundle in a same Product Spec. And due to business requirement, Service Bundle 1 have to execute InitiateBilling first before the Service Bundle 2. I have tried using Data Change notification but looks like both Instance are still being executed together. We have also try to use Property Correlation in Order Item Dependency, but seems like this doesn't help. Is there anyway in OSM we can configure this approach? Any reply will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Hans

    Hi Hans,
    If i understand correctly, you are having single product spec for Service Bundle 1 and Service Bundle 2.
    You have to call InitiateBillingFunction of Service Bundle 1 before calling InitiateBillingFunction of Service Bundle 2. Is this your requirement??
    Will your business supports having two different product specs !!

  • Deploying Adobe Creative Cloud via GPO

    A few months ago my long and lasting journey with Adobe CC started and I was pretty eager to deploy the software in our enterprise. As it comes out, with a little help from Adobe, that just made me crazy and a few pretty pointless and sensless tests I finally managed it somehow to get Adobe CC deployment via GPO. None of our users have local admin rights due to restrictive policy in our enterprise. All testing and configuration was made on Windows 7 Enterprise (x86 and x64) machines.
    As we don't use SCCM in our environment it was critical to use "simple" GPO rollout for software. As there are MSI's with all the packages I started my journey...
    To start it all of:
    As it seems, you cannot buy licenses any more permanent and you can buy them via subscription. OK, that's one way to go and since we need all these products in future we went in evaluating it. Since we cannot buy licenses in a big order like adobe wants us to we were only left to buy the creative cloud for teams and not for enterprise. Still, this was fine to, since adobe offered the cloud packager and a lot of documentation, i thought at least.
    To test and make sure that we can deploy all of the wanted features of creative cloud we bought 2 licenses for the IT-staff. During testing, late semptember/october 2014, with the cloud packager in version 1.6 I was able to deploy the packages and software as we wanted. Just as information, we wanted our users to have Bridge, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Dreamveawer, Prelude and the most important thing, we did NOT want the creative cloud desktop application due to company restrictions. Well as mentioned before everything worked as charm and I was just happy to start ordering the licenses for all of our users and get things done
    Well, as a lot surely know, the process of ordering the licenses and getting things rolling in a enterprise sometimes takes a little (more) time. After about one or two months later everything was ready and set and I was feeling like this is going to be a piece of cake. Make new packages with the cloud packager, create the gpo's, test the deployment, invite the users and I'm the king of the jungle.
    That was what I thought...
    Adobe was so nice to release the newer and more improved version (I think 1.7 or 1.8) of the cloud packager, that suddenly hasn't been able to deactivate the creative cloud desktop application. Well, not a problem I thought to myself, I'll just uninstall it later on and it's fine. Since there are about 20 users that were getting the software it would be a not so nice job, but once done it's done and it shouldn't happen again.
    Then i was hit by Adobe with a colossal fist right in the face! Why are you asking? Well as I mentioned above, the deployment via GPO worked fine and now? Not anymore, since the exception deployer couldn't install the applications it just broke everything and didn't even try to install the other applications that don't need the exception deployer. After a few e-mails and further testing, run as local admin, run installation after being copied to local, I lost fate that this is ever going to work.
    Adobe gave me the best help they could and I even had a deployment expert in on a web session and he gave me a short commandlet (exception deployer) and said that it has to work this way but surprise, it didn't. As I was getting more and more frustrated by this situation and the exception deployer I started to shrink down the packages as much as possible so that there are no applications that needed to be deployed with the exception deployer. I run tests and guess what? It worked! Man, was I happy that after almost a month things started getting in the right shape. As I couldn't sleep because of this mess I started testing the applications that Adobe techs said needed the exception deployer. I created a new package just for Lightroom 5 (yeah, I know there is a newer version out now, but not at that moment) and saw that it landed in this exception folder that is made during packaging with the cloud packager. I was just curious to test it and made a new GPO for just Lightroom, as a MSI was also within the package I figured, why not give it a try? It worked again!?! I was pretty surprised due to the information that it shouldn't be working, as Adobe techs stated.
    The simpler problem was the creative cloud desktop application. After having the Adobe techs in on a websession they stated, that it should work if I choose enterprise licensing to get rid of this software. But due to Adobe's updating policy of the creative cloud packager, there has been a newer version released (1.9) that opted out this feature to deactivate the installation of the creative cloud desktop application. I thought myself, why? Just please tell us why Adobe do we need this? But OK, there was also a solutions for this problem, the adobe creative cloud cleaning tool. If you create and XML file that is being read from the cleaning tool you can run this and "almost silently" uninstall the software via GPO. I gave it a shot and it works like a charm.
    To be honest I thought, that Adobe due to it's status as THE software company when it comes to creating/editing multimedia content they would know about the problems some of their customers across the globe could be having. As it seems, they don't care enough or haven't ever had somebody with a similar problem(what I cannot believe, but all right) to share some more detailed information about a case like this.
    I know, why have we bought it, if we don't need any cloud space? Well it's simple, Adobe creative products are needed and the CS6 products won't be here forever so it's better to start sooner than later with migration to a newer release. Still I was hoping to get more help from Adobe....
    Just to share the packages with you:
    "Complete 32Bit" package includes: Audition CS6+Updates, Bridge CC, Dreamweaver CC 2014.1, Edge Animate CC 2014, Fireworks CS6, Illustrator CC 2014, Incopy CC 2014, InDesign CC 2014, Photoshop CC 2014, Prelude CS6
    "Complete 64Bit" package includes: Audition CS6+Updates, Bridge CC, Dreamweaver CC 2014.1, Edge Animate CC 2014, Fireworks CS6, Illustrator CC 2014, Incopy CC 2014, InDesign CC 2014, Photoshop CC 2014, Prelude CS6, Premiere Pro CC 2014, SpeedGrade CC 2014
    "InDesign 32Bit" package includes: InDesign CC 2014
    "InDesign 64Bit" package includes: InDesign CC 2014
    "Lightroom 5 32Bit" package: Lightroom 5
    "Lightroom  5 64Bit" package: Lightroom 5
    None of these packages needed the exception deployer to be run. It was all tested on different (also different machine specs) 32bit and 64bit machines. The OS was always Windows 7 Enterprise.
    To uninstall the creative cloud desktop application i wrote a batch file:
    @ECHO OFF
    IF EXIST C:\log_adobe_cc_cleaner\*.* EXIT ## checks if this folder is existent. If not it continues. If there is the folder it stops and won't run again ##
    mkdir C:\temp_adobe_cc_cleaner ## creates a temp folder, as the uinstall tool can only be run locally ##
    xcopy \\your_server\your_share$\adobecc\adobecc-cleaner\*.* C:\temp_adobe_cc_cleaner\*.* /Y ## copies the complete content of the folder to the newly created local folder ##
    call "C:\temp_adobe_cc_cleaner\AdobeCreativeCloudCleanerTool.exe" --cleanupXML=C:\temp_adobe_cc_cleaner\cleanup_desktop_app.xml
    xcopy "%Temp%\Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.log" "C:\log_adobe_cc_cleaner\*.*" /Y ## copies the log file to folder, creates the folder itself ##
    rmdir /q /s "C:\temp_adobe_cc_cleaner" ## removes the adobe creative cloud unintaller from local machine, leaves the log file folder for further check if the creative cloud uninstall tool needs to be rerun ##
    The XML file has following written:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <Products>
    <Properties>
      <Property name="eulaAccepted">1</Property>
      <!--<Property name="removeFlashPlayer">1</Property>-->
    </Properties>
    <CreativeCloud>
      <Product productName="Adobe Creative Cloud" version="2.0"/>
      <!--<Product productName="Adobe ID CC2014 x32 AppBase" version="10.0"/>-->
    </CreativeCloud>
    <AdobeIdCredentials>
      <!--<Product productName="Adobe Id Credentials" version="1.0"/>-->
    </AdobeIdCredentials>
    </Products>
    Updating of the Adobe products is done with Secunia CSI in our enterprise, but there is also the posibility to remotely run the updatemanager.exe or via logon/logoff script.
    What I also found out, was the dependency of vcredist for adobe products. You need the 2010, 2012 of them and most importantly in the x86 and x64 version! In case you get a .DLL missing error.
    I hope this here helps someone who has lost a lot of nerves and a lot of time due to the deployment of Adobe creative cloud applications. I stil hope that there is going to be a better and easier way to deploy this.
    Excuse me for the bad english, good luck with your deployment and maybe we can get Adobe a bit smarter from our all experience to make us a good deployment method.

  • Trying to understand Android OS updates delays

    This is not another hate mail, it´s more about trying to understand the facts and motives regarding the OS updates (or lack of).
    Hopefully this material will arrive at someone from Sony with enough power to do something about it.
    Ever since I can remember, Sony has been THE brand for electronics. I can´t remember a TV or VCR in my house that it wasn´t Sony, and they lasted for LOTS of years.
    When a couple years ago I finally had the money (and the need) for a Smartphone, i chose the X10 Mini, which is a great little phone from a great brand, but it´s stuck at Android 2.1... which makes it a crippled android nowadays...
    It really bothered me the lack of OS updates, so I chose to buy a Galaxy Nexus, but it´s really expensive in my country. So my second option was a Galaxy Ace 2, but they haven´t arrived to my country yet, so I went with my third option: Xperia Sola, knowing beforehand that it´s a great phone, a great brand, but I might get slow OS updates.
    I bought it about 10 days ago when I saw they were starting to roll out the updates.
    10 days later I still don´t have my update. And not only that, but I don´t see much light at the end of the tunnel...
    I found a thread with the SI numbers that were updated, and there were a bunch on Oct 1, another bunch on Oct 4, and one code on Oct 8, and no other update since...
    I also read that those who did get the update, were having bugs with the OS, and also found threads from other Xperia models, whose updates began rolling 3 months ago, and there is still people who hasn´t gotten the update...
    As a customer, and a owner/CEO of a small company, I have a really hard time understanding how a HUGE company like Sony can be making such mistakes...
    I have been thinking objective reasons, and I can only think of one. I know it´s a wild guess, but I´m starting to think that our salvation might be the very thing that means our condemnation: CYANOGENMOD!!!
    Think about it: Why would Sony spend more money hiring twice as much programmers, when they can make only one update per phone, and sit down and see how CM releases begin to appear, for all tastes and needs. And... IT´s FREE!!!
    Also, if there is a software related problem (way more likely than a hardware problem), then the CM developers take the fall, instead of Sony. And I´m beginning to see custom OS installers that are more user friendly, so it might be something that they take in accout when neglecting OS updates.
    If that´s the line Sony is following, it´s a very risky move and it won´t work. Sony Mobile will crash and burn, but it´s still a better business plan that "let´s get lazy and make ULTRA slow updates so we don´t spend a lot of money programming".
    If you can´t afford more programmers, stop including so much bells and whistles and make your OS near vanilla. Include a couple of Xperia menus, a custom theme and voila!
    The main reason I wanted the Galaxy Nexus is Vanilla OS, which means inmediate OS updates. Sony on the other hand, takes a year or two to release it after its launch. If they release it at all...
    Another though...  why not stop making that many different phones! Really! There are like 5 Xperia models i can´t tell one from the other... even with specs side by side!
    You are trying to make too many phones and you are failing with all of them! (Software and software updates are also part of the phone, one of the most importants...)
    I know hiring programmers is expensive, but you are sacrificing one of the most expensive values for a company EVER: Customer credibility! Which as you know better than me, takes years to create.
    If Apple had problems with carriers and code aprooving and stuff, they might get away with it, becouse they alone have all the devices. If iOS 6 is delayed a few months, it´s delayed for everyone, and besides Apple fanboys rarely complain about Mac products, but Android is a more independent and educated market.
    I´m not saying that Apple users are ignorant, not at all, but I´m pretty sure most iPhone owners don´t even know what processor or how much RAM their phone has. They just "swallow" the Apple Way of Life. (it´s a good phone becouse Apple says so).
    The Android user on the other side, because of the fragmentation of the market, has many brands and models to choose from. An Android user about to buy a new phone will most likely go online looking for different models, specs, reviews in webs and forums...etc.
    You can´t say "I don´t know how HTC and other companies get their updates so soon, but we take a lot more becouse Google and the Operators must aproove the code.", because there are many other brands that have exactly the same difficulties or more, since they are smaller, and we can SEE online that they are indeed delivering solid and relativly fast updates.
    Did we miss something? Does HTC use Witchcraft to get their code aprooved?
    My underlying point is this: You are getting lazy... VERY lazy with software programming for your phones, and WE KNOW IT!
    It´s not the "difficulties" you claim, becouse every brand has those difficulties.
    This isn´t 1999 you know. We are in the information age. If you lie to us and tell us that your phones have the latest OS, I can go online and see that you don´t (Hello!!!). If I see that the company lies to it´s customers, I will stop buying their products. If I´m so dissapointed with how Sony handles OS updates and their customers queries about it, then I want for the first time ever to sell my Cell Phone becouse I´m not happy with it, or the brand behind it.
    We also live in the "Here and now" age. You can´t expect your customers to read about new Android releases on news and blogs, and wait YEARS with arms crossed waiting for their update... The world doesn´t work like that. Not anymore at least...
    It´s not a matter of how many recources you have, it´s about how you use and balance them. GIVE MORE IMPORTANCE TO SOFTWARE UPDATES! IT´S WAY MORE IMPORTANT THAT YOU THINK! LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS!!!
    You guys are Sony are smart and design great products, but you are not GOD! You are not our wife, no one has sworn alliagence to you.
    If you stop giving us good products and start lying to us, we hate you and stop giving you our money. Simple as that.
    My sola is beatiful, I love the design, the screen, the hardware... but it hasn´t been updated yet to 4.0, not to mention 4.1, which REALLY is the latest version... so stop advertising that your phones have the latest Android OS, unless you want angry customers switching to other companies, which you are getting.
    I also read some stories that Androind 4.0 was announced for the Xperia PLAY, and then it was called off... Do you have any idea how pissed I would be and ripped off I would be if I bought my phone based in that information and then you say it won´t be available?
    Well, actually right now my possition is worse, since you SAY you will update my phone, but you don´t say when, and I read online about people still not getting their updates months after the rollout started, so I´m in the limbo right now...
    As a company, one of the worse things you can do is calling your customers stupid, and when I see the answers you give in this forum, then I feel insulted. I feel like they are talking to an idiot or ignorant person with the so called "diplomatic" answers, which are basicly empty excuses for not doing your job right.
    You gave us the frikking CDs, DVDs and Blu-Rays!!! Don´t tell us you can´t tweak an already built OS in a year!
    I really hope you change their OS update policies really soon, before you lose the already small cellphone market share you have, or at least change your P.R. and C.M. policies towards a more open one.
    We all are humans and make mistakes, but we customers really appreciate honesty and truth.
    Have an open conversation with your customers! Don´t lie about your shortcomings! Accept then and ask the community to help you solve them, ask them what they biggest problems are, what features are most important to them, how often do they expect updates... LISTEN TO THEM!!
    "Succes is a meneace. It tricks smart people into thinking they can´t lose."
    Ps: Nothing personal with the mods from this forum, I´m not killing the messenger, I know that you can ONLY give the info you are allowed to give, and even if you wanted, you probably don´t know the answers yourself, since you work in the Communications department, not Developement or anything technical, and if you can't give any given info, then they probably won´t give it to you either... My message is to the company as a whole. I just hope you will be a good messenger and give this to whoever needs to read it.

    My bad, it´s closer to 40 the number of phones released hehe
    I know it´s all about money, and I know Sony is obligated to neglect users who haven´t given them money after an x ammount of time. However, it´s not a matter of making the phones obsolete earlier, so the users want to buy a new phone faster and therefore getting more money.
    A person will buy a new phone when he/she has the money to do so and wants to do so.
    It´s not a matter of WHEN. It´s a matter of WHAT.
    The question is not "When will that user buy a new phone?", but rather "When that user buys a new phone, whenever that is, what phone will it be?"
    I have a love/hate relationship with Apple. I would never use a iPhone. I would love having any Mac, if someone gives it to me, but I would never spend my harn earned dollars on such an overpriced piece of hardware over general principals.
    However, i do recognice that Steve Jobs was a business genius. Weather you like or love his ideas and methods, he turned a garage project into the biggest company in the world, with a market value higher than Exxon with 1/3 of it´s assets.
    Apple is a money making machine, and that is where the "hate" part of my relationship comes from.
    However, it surprised me a lot to see that they released iOS 6 for the iPhone 3GS, released in 2008!
    That get´s you thinking, that inside all that "SELL NOW" culture Apple is, they also support their older devices that people bought years ago but can't buy a new phone now. However, when they can do it, it will surely be another iPhone. Because they FEEL that the company listens and cares for them.
    Also if you jump from iOS 6 on the 3 GS to a brand new iPhone 5, the transition will be virtually non-existant, except for Siri and a couple of features.
    However jumping from Android 1.5 or 2.1 to Jelly Bean, might not be so easy on some users, making them more likely to give iPhone a shot.
    Since they have to adapt to another phone anyway, they might as well try the apple...
    And for old users, it gives people a sense of continuity and care about the user. Otherwise we feel like being kicked out of a restaurant right after we payed the bill.

  • No video output from MacBook Air micro DVI to Polaroid HDTV via DVI to HDMI

    Grrr! What's going on? The Apple online store finally sent me a micro DVI to DVI adapter and a DVI to HDMI adapter cable as well as headphone output to RCA adapter cables (for separate audio, since DVI will not transmit audio) and I hooked it up and - NOTHING! When I initialize the appropriate input setting on the Polaroid 27"HDTV the MacBook Air seems to get some sort of query signal as its screen flickers for a moment and turns to a grey screen for a couple seconds but then, that's it! Nothing! The Polaroid's screensaver remains and no signal, audio or video, is transmitted. Now, the micro DVI to DVI adapter is Apple proprietary so I don't think it is a DRM related issue where the chip might block the video signal coming out of the MacBook Air. The longer, DVI to HDMI adapter cable is by Belkin. Am I overlooking something? Could the new 27" Polaroid HDTV not be compatible with DRM protocol? I don't think so since all digital TVs equipped with an HDMI input are supposed to have DRM compatibility built in. What gives?

    Well, BSteely, where to begin? After my extensive discussions with more than one support engineer at Apple in Toronto as well as in Austin an interesting picture is emerging. Seems that I'd omitted a few things: First, I was not trying to display HD content but rather standard definition content. Second, I made the mistake hoping for an elegant and easy solution in hookup via HDMI (new flatscreens don't even have a DVI port anymore) - bad mistake! As one of the technicians put it, HDMI is an "unsettled" platform when it comes to HDCP, currently in version 1.4 , meaning, I should have tried VGA instead, a "settled" platform after all. Now, whether this will work remains to be seen because I don't have a micro DVI to VGA adapter yet but suffice to say that in essence I've been getting the message from Apple that, yes, the MacBook Air will - in the near future - support HDCP, but for now it does not contain the necessary software simply because HDMI is in its forth incarnation; plus, as they put it, Apple can't be responsible for testing compatibility with every single HD television set on the market - while it is true that there are thousands in existence, at the same time there are only four versions of HDMI with different HDCP specs! So, while I may be partially answering my own query here, it seems that Apple at this point is not particularly eager to make this software available because they rather would like to sell their new displays with the micro DVI ports instead of us endusers being able to hook the computer video signal up to just ANY monitor or TV. In the end, it is my hope that they will reconsider and not forget who their customers are, maybe after the Christmas season....

  • CS5 64-Bit packages crashing in open and save dialogs

    Hi all,
    I am having a big problem running photoshop 64-bit, it opens ok but when you go to file and click either Open or Save the application just closes with no error report. I have been on quite a few forums about this, common answers seem to be the following:-
    Open GL (switch off or take vertical option Off)
    update graphics driver (fully up to date)
    Windows Updates ( fully up to date)
    Delete the CS5 Service Manager folder out of the local profile
    Stop WACOM service (haven't got a tablet installed)
    Create new user (unfortunately the default user profile has been overwrite for sysprep purposes so nit affects every new user)
    None of which have worked, I would really like to avoid rebuilding as it takes about 2 days to rebuild from scratch. We are using CS5 on a College network I currently have over 250 pc's using Windows 64-bit, on four different pc specs the main spec is as follows:-
    Core i7-2600S
    4 GB Ram
    Intel Q67 Express Chipset Family (version 9.2.0.1025)
    Intel Processor Graphics 2000 (Version 8.15.10.2509)
    Video Bios A00 (2089)
    This spec is only used for photoshop and illustrator, my other specs are for premiere and after effects which also have the same problem although premiere is slightly different it allows you to open the dialog box for import then reports not responding and gives you a dialogue do you want to report to windows but the XML file isn't created.
    Has anyone encountered a similar problem
    Please let me know
    cheers
    lee

    thanks for the suggestions i did abit more digging to find it was a corruption in windows. the fix was:-
    run command prompt as administrtor and run sfc /scannow
    after a reboot everything works fine

  • USBvsFWvsSATA Ext. Drives - The Comprehensive(?) Guide!

    Maybe not the most comprehensive, but I see this topic come up over and over again. Hopefully this will answer pretty much everyone's questions. AFAIK everything here is pretty accurate, but I'm not perfect, so do your own research!
    OK, before we begin, you must understand that the fastest any drive will work will be the slowest spot in the chain (generally the platters, or the physical interface). If you put a SATAII drive in a USB 1.1 enclosure, not only will the drive simply crawl, but you have wasted a great deal of money! So, let's look at the specs of interfaces, then the drives, and then put it all together.
    These numbers are averages, and sometimes educated guesses. So not all here is set in stone. A lot of the numbers are gleaned from www.storagereview.com - a great site for drive benchmarking, etc.
    First we need to understand the difference between burst speed and sustained throughput. Burst is just what it sounds like. Just a quick burst of data. Sustained throughput is what really matters in drives. This is actually how fast data can move to and from the drive continuously. Streaming video, copying of large files, etc. all rely on *sustained throughput*. This is the benchmark that matters, not burst.
    Most drive speeds are shown as the actual interface speed (the speed with which data can be moved from the controller & cache to the interface on the PC). This speed is fast because it is all electronic transfer. However, the actual drive speed is slower because the platters, etc. all have moving parts, and are slower than the interface speed. Also, this "extrenal transfer rate" has almost NOTHING to do with the capabilities of the drive itself. It is simply the FASTEST link in the chain (pure electronic transfer), & therefore what the marketing folks like to use. The drives internal characteristics are what limits its performance.
    Disk Platters --(STR)--> Cache --(ETR)--> IDE interface on your PC mobo.
    Lets look at the external transfer rates (ETR) compared to the real world sustained throughput (STR) rates:
    - USB 1.1 - so slow, don't even think about it.
    - USB 2.0 - 480Mbps = 52MBps. This is BURST ETR. Sustained Throughput is MUCH slower. According to Storage Review once you take away the overhead of converting data from IDE or SATA to USB, the USB protocol, etc. USB gives you an effective sustained throughput of around 26MBps, or 208mbps. A far cry from 480 burst that USB 2.0 claims. And that is the maximum. Now you need to find a drive that performs as close to that maximum as possible...
    - FW400 - 400mbps = 50MBps - this speed, however, is sustained throughput. IOW, even though the numbers are smaller than USB 2.0 (400 vs 480) a FW400 drive is going to be a lot faster. How much faster? Well, not as much as you'd expect. IIRC the actual sustained throughput of a FW400 drive (remember there is overhead) is in the neighborhood of 35MBps, not 50MBps. THis is the speed of actual data streaming from the drive to the PC/laptop, after overhead. 35+MBps.
    - FW800 - 800mbps - 100MBps - I don't have any actual numbers for this. If FW400 is doing 35MBps, then I would guess that FW800 is somewhere between 70MBps & 80MBps (if your drive is fast enough to pump data out that quickly!). FW800 would be a little more than twice FW400 (well, theoretically at least) because you only have to subtract the overhead once, not twice. Now, IDE drives, no matter what the interface, are not going to give you sustained throughput this fast, but it does have advantages as we will see with SATA over FW400.
    -eSATA - 1.5Gbps = 187.5MBps - In the real world, SATA drives (15k and 10krpm ones no less) will give you somewhere close to 80-90MBps sustained throughput. Not the 187 theoretical limit.
    - IDE/ATA/33 = 33MBps or 264mbps - In the real world, sustained throughput from these drives is going to run around the 23-26MBps mark.
    - IDE/ATA/66 = 66MBps or 528mbps - In the real world there is almost NO difference in speeds between ATA33 and ATA66 drives. Many times a 7200rpm ATA33 drive can outperform a 5400rpm ATA66 drive. Often times when you see benchmarks showing much better ATA66 performance over ATA33 performance the reason is that the ATA33 drive is a 5400rpm drive, and the ATA66 drive is a 7200rpm drive!
    - IDE/ATA/100/133 - There is very little throughput advantage to these either. They do come in faster rpms. In fact the difference is so negligible, that at one point IBM called their ATA100 drives "ATA66+"
    SO then, what is the point of ATA100 over ATA33 then? Well if the data that you need is *already in the cache* of your drive, then it will move from the cache to your PC mobo at the ETR speed of 100MBps (in the case of ATA100). This situation is such a small percentage of the requests for data made to a disk, that when you average it out, the results are negligible.
    All of this being said, at times it can be a waste to put an ATA100 drive into an ATA33 mobo. For one thing, ATA100 drives are more expensive. For another thing, on those rare occassions where the data you want IS in the drives cache, it can't move it to the PC at 100MBps, it can only do 33MBps.
    So, what makes a drive faster? The bottleneck is getting data from the platters to the cache. So, a faster rotational speed will get the data there faster. If you have a 5400rpm ata33 drive, lets say it's getting data to the cache at 20MBps. Now get a 7200rpm version of the same drive, and you may get data at an STR of 26MBps. Both drives are ATA33, and both drives are identical sizes. That 7200rpm ata33 drive can easily be faster than a 5400rpm ata100 disk. Of course different drives have different performance specs... Not all 100GB 5400rpm drives are alike, as we will see at the very end of this post!
    OK, so a summary at this point:
    Interfaces
    =======
    USB 2.0 = ~26MBps (real world STR)
    FW400 = ~35MBps
    FW800 = ~80MBps (educated guess)
    eSATA = somewhere in the 100MBps I would guess I have not seen any SATA interface benchmarks, though I have seen SATA drive benchmarks
    Drive Interfaces
    ===========
    NOTE: with drives there is a range. The higher speeds in the range are generally the 15krpm and the 10krpm drives, at least in my SATA numbers.
    ATA33 = 23-26MBps
    ATA66 = 23-26MBps
    ATA100 & 133 = 23-26MBps
    SATA = ~70-90+MBps
    So, what drive and what interface to get? USB? FW400? Expresscard-FW800? Expresscard-eSATA? Well, it depends on what you wanna do, really. For streaming video editing, you need 3.6MBps per stream. Remember there will be additional overhead (possibly) on the drive. If you are streaming 2 video streams, each with 2 audio tracks, the drive has got to look that stuff up and stream it from the drive to your application. Hopefully you have a lot of RAM!
    Remember that a 5400rpm desktop drive will be slower than a 5400rpm 2.5 laptop drive because the laptop drive is smaller so the same rpms with less physical space to search means faster access times. ALso remember that a 250Gig desktop drive will be slower than an 80Gig laptop drive. Smaller capacity drives are faster which is why you don't see real data warehouse raid servers running multiple 500Gig drives, but rather multiple 120Gig drives. So a 100Gig 7200rpm IDE drive can easily (again depending on the particular drive) smoke a 300Gig 5400rpm desktop drive, and even it's 7200rpm equivalent.
    SO (by interface):
    If your external hard drive is going to connect via USB (~26MBps) then you want a drive that can take full advantage of that. If you are just transferring data for backups, or copying files back & forth, then any old IDE drive will be just fine. If you are doing video and want to maximize your performance, you want to use as much of that 26MBps bandwidth as possible. Get a 7200rpm IDE drive. A 5400rpm may suffice (again not all 5400rpm drives are equal as I will point out shortly). SO how fast is a 7200rpm drive via USB going to be as compared to a desktop drive? It will be at least on par with any 5400rpm desktop drive, and possibly on par with many 7200rpm desktop drives. See becnhmarks taken from storagereview.com at the end of this post for a limited laptop<->desktop comparison.
    Now, if you want to connect via FW400, you want to maximize that 35+MBps bandwidth, right? What are your options? a 7200rpm IDE drive, or a 5400rpmSATA drive (a 7200rpmSATA drive for FW400 is a complete waste of money at this point). So you can get 26MBps from the 7200rpm IDE (wasting only about 9MBps), or MUCH higher from the SATA. The problem is that even if you are getting say 70MBps from a 2.5" external SATA drive (which would likely have to be a 7200rpm drive), you are still limited by the 35+MBps speed of the FW400 connection. You can spend a lot more money and max out that 35MBps w/ SATA, or get slightly lower performance with a 7200rpm IDE drive. THese days, the SATAs are as cheap and in some cases cheaper than the equivalent sized 7200 IDE drives. However, there are caveats (see below) that may make you think twice about getting that SATA over the 7200rpm IDE! Oh, and 7200rpm IDEs are getting faster STRs all the time.
    FW800. Basically the same arguements as with FW400. Here's the thing.... why get the FW800 expresscard unless it's REALLY cheap? For about the same price you can get an eSATA expresscard and get better performance (how much is up for debate). Personally I would not even think about FW800. It would be either USB/FW400 on the lower-end, or eSATA on the higher end. FW800 for IDE drives is a waste. Use the internal FW400 port if you can.
    eSATA - well, you have no choice. You HAVE to get a SATA hard drive. SImple!
    CAVEATS:
    Here's the thing. WIth 2.5" drives, IDE drive can operate off of USB bus power. SATA drives often need an external power source. The USB spec only outputs up to 500 or 600 milliamps of power via USB. This is fine for many SATA drives when it comes to reads & writes. However, many require more power for spinup. The Hitachi low power 5k100 SATA drive requires up to 1 amp (1000 milliamps) of power at spinup. The hitachi rep told me that his drive may work on USB power, but running the drive through it's paces would likely need an external (plug into the wall) power source. This is a low power SATA drive too.
    Now, if you are going to plug into the wall ANYWAY, then why not just go ahead and get a 3.5" enclosure? For the same price of a 100GB 2.5" SATA drive, you can get a 300GB 3.5" SATA drive! The 3.5" SATA enclosures are a lot cheaper than the 2.5 ones as well.
    IDE drives require less power than SATA and can be powered off of the USB port (2.5" drives only - all desktop drives will require AC power!)
    CAVEAT #2:
    Do you plan to boot windows off of this drive (using the BootCamp windows install hack that allows you to have a small 5Gig windows partition on your Mac for bootstrapping Windows, and where the rest of the windows files are installed to the external drive)? If this is your goal, then Firewire is NOT an option for you!. Windows will NOT boot off of a firewire drive. It will boot off of a USB drive (with the aforementioned hack), or eSATA (w/o the hack).
    ==========
    CONCLUSION
    ==========
    So, I think the best options boil down to the degree of freedom and mobility that you want. If you want a truly portable drive that is not tethered to a wall outlet, then you MUST use an IDE drive, and not SATA. Given the 26MBps real world STR of IDE, and the similar max STR of USB 2.0, this combo makes the most sense. IF you are using your USB ports for other stuff, you can get a FW400 enclosure, or a USB/FW enclosure. FW/USB combo enclosures run around 50% more in price than USB 2.0 only enclosures (iow, about $10 more). And there is not much use in using FW400 unless you have a 7200rpm IDE drive, AND you can't boot from a FW drive if you wanted that option.
    If you don't mind being tethered to a wall, I think the best solution for the money is to get a 3.5" SATA enclosure so you can get a much larger drive for your money. It's your choice whether you want to buy a FW800 or eSATA expresscard (I would pick eSATA - no SATA to FW conversion overhead). If you don't want to spend the $100 or whatever on an expresscard, get an external SATA enclosure that is both SATA to eSATA and SATA to FireWire. Again, booting off of Firewire is not an option (at least not for Windows).
    ====
    P.S.
    ====
    One last point: Not all drives are alike!
    Quick and simple point... 2 virtually identical 2.5" 7200rpm drives from different manufacturers can perform very differently.
    Take a look at the SR High-end DriveMark2006 scores for the following drives (Higher is better):
    Hitachi Travelstar 7k100 (100GB, 2.5", 7200rpm, IDE) = 413
    Seagate Momentus 7200.1 (100GB, 2.5", 7200rpm, IDE) = 366
    Seagate Momentus 5400.2 (100GB, 2.5", 5400rpm, IDE) = 332
    Hitachi Travelstar 5k100 (100GB, 2.5", 5400rpm, IDE) = 326
    Western Digital Scorpio WD800VE (80GB, 2.5", 5400rpm, IDE) = 287
    What this means is that the Seagate 5400rpm is almost as fast as the Seagate 7200rpm drive, with the Hitachi 5k100 neck & neck! The WD 5400rpm drive, however, is noticably slower.
    How does this compare to other drives?
    The same test performed on high-end desktop drives (these were the ones that scored the lowest - there were some amazingly fast drives - they are also expensive drives)
    Seagate Cheetah 10k.7 Desktop Mode (300GB, 3.5", 10000rpm, Ultra320 SCSI) = 412 (that is SLOWER than the Hitachi travelstar 7k100 IDE drive!!!)
    Seagate Cheetah 10k.7 Server Mode (300GB, 3.5", 10000rpm, Ultra320 SCSI) = 410
    Hitachi Deskstar 7k400 w/ TCQ (400Gb, 3.5", 7200rpm, SATA) = 392 (Hitachi's own notebook drive beats the SATA in these benchmarks!)
    Seagate Savvio 10k.1 Server Mode (74GB, 3.5", Ultra320 SCSI) = 375
    Hitachi Ultrastar 10k300 (300GB, 3.5", Ultra320 SCSI) = 369
    (look at www.storagereview.com for the bench marks and an explanation of this particular benchmark.)
    This means that those IDE notebook drives are pretty fast drives, and can even keep up with some SATA and Ultra320 SCSI desktop/server drives! Unfortunately I could not find STR numbers for the laptop drives on storagereview.com or any other location. If anyone knows of another site, I would love to see the results.

    So, which FW400 portable drive (brand & model) would
    you personally recommend?
    Regards,
    Neither!
    Actually, I am going to be booting Windows from a 5Gig internal (bootcamp) partition and the OS files will reside on the external drive. This limits me to SATA & USB.
    I am going to get a USB 2.0 enclosure and get one of those 4 drives mentioned at the end of the article (Hitachi TravelStar 5k100 & 7k100 & the Seagate Momentus 5400 and/or 7200rpm drives). That will be my "mobile" solution.
    Then, I'm going to find a SATA enclosure (3.5") that does eSATA and FW. I'll clone my mobile drive onto that (well, at least the windows install). I'll run FW400 until prices for the eSATA cards come down to the $50 range (the cards are already there - well one brand is, but there are no mac drivers for it, just windows... so maybe that cheap one will work for me...)
    Don't know what brand & size 3.5 drive I'm gonna get.
    As for the enclosures, there is something that I don't know that much about. How much of a difference do the chipsets on these things really make a difference? Oxford is the only chipset that I know by name, but I am going to stay away from those. I saw a recording studio lose thousands of dollars worth of recorded time (that they had to refund) because the oxford chipset on their external HDD died and took the drive with it. When I took it to a data recovery specialist friend of mine and told him what happened his first question was "Oxford chipset?" I'm sure that they are much improved now over 2 years ago, but I don't want to take any chances.

  • Hyper-V over SMB 3.0 poor performance on 1GB NIC's without RDMA

    This is a bit of a repost as the last time I tried to troubleshoot this my question got hijacked by people spamming alternative solutions (starwind)
    For my own reasons I am currently evaluating Hyper-V over SMB with a view to designing our new production cluster based on this technology.  Given our budget and resources a SoFS makes perfect sense.
    The problem I have is that in all my testing, as soon as I host a VM's files on a SMB 3.0 server (SoFS or standalone) I am not getting the performance I should over the network.
    My testing so far:
    4 different decent spec machines with 4-8gb ram, dual/quad core cpu's,
    Test machines are mostly Server 2012 R2 with one Windows 8.1 hyper-v host thrown in for extra measure.
    Storage is a variety of HD and SSD and are easily capable of handling >100MB/s of traffic and 5k+ IOPS
    Have tested storage configurations as standalone, storage spaces (mirrored, spanned and with tiering)
    All storage is performing as expected in each configuration.
    Multiple 1GB NIC's from broadcom, intel and atheros.  The broadcoms are server grade dual port adapters.
    Switching has been a combination of HP E5400zl, HP 2810 and even direct connect with crossover cables.
    Have tried stand alone NIC's, teamed NIC's and even storage through hyper-v extensible switch.
    File copies between machines will easily max out 1GB in any direction.
    VM's hosted locally show internal benchmark performance in line with roughly 90% of underlying storage performance.
    Tested with dynamic and fixed vhdx's
    NIC's have been used in combinations of RSS and TCP offload enabled/disabled.
    Whenever I host VM files on a different server from where it is running, I observe the following:
    Write speeds within the VM to any attached vhd's are severely effected and run at around 30-50% of 1GB
    Read Speeds are not as badly effected but just about manager to hit 70% of 1GB
    Random IOPS are not noticeably affected.
    Running multiple tests at the same time over the same 1GB links results in the same total through put.
    The same results are observed no matter which machine hosts the vm or the vhdx files.
    Any host involved in a test will show a healthy amount of cpu time allocated to hardware interupts.  On a 6 core 3.8Ghz cpu this is around 5% of total.  On the slowest machine (dual core 2.4Ghz) this is roughly 30% of cpu load.
    Things I have yet to test:
    Gen 1 VM's
    VM's running anything other than server 2012 r2
    Running the tests on actual server hardware. (hard as most of ours are in production use)
    Is there a default QoS or IOPS limit when SMB detects hyper-v traffic?  I just can't wrap my head around how all the tests are seeing an identical bottleneck as soon as the storage traffic goes over smb.
    What else should I be looking for? There must be something obvious that I am overlooking!

    By nature of a SOFS reads are really good, but there is no write cache, SOFS only seems to perform well with Disk mirroring, this improves the write performance and redundancy but halves your disk capacity.
    Mirror (RAID1 or RAID10) actually REDUCES number of IOPS. With read every spindle takes part in I/O request processing (assumimg I/O is big enough to cover the stripe) so you multiply IOPS and MBps on amount of spindles you have in a RAID group and all writes
    need to go to the duplicated locations that's why READS are fast and WRITES are slow (1/2 of the read performance). This is absolutely basic thing and SoFS layered on top can do nothing to change this.
    StarWind iSCSI SAN & NAS
    Not wanting to put the cat amongst the pigeons, this isn't strictly true, RAID 1 and 10 give you the best IOP performance of any Raid group, this is why all the best performing SQL Cluster use RAID 10 for most of their storage requirements,

  • CS5 64-Bit applications crashing on Basic File Operations

    Hi all,
    I am having a big problem running photoshop 64-bit (32-bit works ok), it opens ok but when you go to file and click either Open or Save the application just closes with no error report.
    Please let me know
    cheers

    thanks for the suggestions i did abit more digging to find it was a corruption in windows. the fix was:-
    run command prompt as administrtor and run sfc /scannow
    after a reboot everything works fine

  • How to get Zen Touch to work on Windows Vista without PFS (worked!)

    CHow to get Zen Touch to work on Windows Vista without PFS (worked!)? ***THIS WORKED***
    For all of you that want to get their music out of the Zen touch, and are stuck with Vista and .0.03 firmware (non vista recognisable), and don't want to erase everything by installing the latest firmware, here is what worked for me:
    )Uninstall every piece of Touch software you got and reboot.
    2) Download the latest drivers from Creative: JB3MV2...exe, together with the latest Nomad explorer, and the latest Notmad explorer from Red Chair (a trial is enough, version 9.0.3 currently).
    3) Right click the driver, properties, go to compatibility mode, and select Windows XP SP2. Make sure your Zen is unplugged (worked for me that way). Right click the driver installer again and Run as Administrator. It hanged around 72% for me, no biggy, open your task manager and shut the installer off.
    4)Before rebooting, install Notmad explorer.(I installed only the Zen touch part of it. I tried to run it right away but got a 'cannot find explorer.exe error - again, no biggy).
    5) Reboot, plug in your Zen. Again for me, Notmad didn't work. This is what worked: Without messing up anything, install Nomad Explorer by Creative on top of it all, and reboot again.
    6) After reboot, with your Zen still plugged in, right click the little Notmad icon on the right part of the taskbar and select 'Connect Jukebox Zen'. And voila, check your explorer, it should hopefully recognise the Zen Touch like windows xp would.
    If you still run into trouble, just install stuff from the beggining, making sure Compatibility: WinXP SP2 and Run as Admin are used everywhere, and keep rebooting till it hopefully works.
    Best of luck. edit: Using Winamp to transfer files worked as well.

  • Trying to undestand container interoperability

    Hello !
    After a while of reading the different j2ee specs (EJB, JTA, JTS...), I
    thought I understood that it is possible for a bean in a container A to
    invoke a bean in a container B. The dialog between containers is supposed to
    be in RMI-IIOP.
    First question : how does it look like from the point of view of the calling
    bean ? does it perform a classic lookup like a normal EJB client ? In this
    case, the lookup must be performed on the JNDI server of container B no ?
    thus it is necessary to specify parameters when instanciating an
    InitialContext, no ?
    Second question : If the way the calling bean calls the bean in container B
    looks like what I wondered in my first question, how can transaction and
    security context be propagated to the container B ? Actually, if the bean A
    retrieves a stub from the JNDI of B and performs invocation of B, how can
    the B stub know that A is currently in a transaction in order to tell it to
    B ?
    Actually, while writing my questions, it looks like the B stub does not
    necessarily talks to container B by using RMI-IIOP. So, what bean A should
    do to make container A use RMI-IIOP to talk to B ?
    Forgive me if my questions are a bit confused, but I desperately want to
    know if and how it is possible to make two beans interoperate between
    different containers. And as per the EJB 2 spec, RMI-IIOP seems to be the
    solution, I'd like to understand how a bean can make use of this.
    Thanks for your patience

    Thanks for your reply. I still have a couple of questions...

    Correct, but the lookup actually happens via CosNaming. So the scenariois:

    Your figure makes me think that the client instanciates an InitialContext
    with the default parameters, no ?
    And it has ejb-ref specially declared in its ejb-jar.xml ? Could you provide
    me with an example ?
    Transactional characteristics are specified in the exported IOR's and
    transactions are propagated via OTS.You mean that container B exports an IOR to container A, which in turns will
    know how to handle transactions when bean A invoke bean B, correct ?
    Because in the case where A makes a direct look-up of bean B with the JNDI
    of B, container A has no opportunity to know what's going on, correct ?

    Why not?Because, for instance WLS uses its own t3 protocol. Thus I can say that if B
    is WLS, B stub talks with container B using T3, unless I made a special
    thing to force it to use RMI-IIOP.

    Of course. This has been demonstrated at the last JavaOne.Unfortunately I was not at the last JavaOne. What was the config for the
    demo ? What containers ?
    Actually I find it quite frustrating not to be able to find any page showing
    a kind of step by step procedure to make two containers work together. Do
    you know of any such a page ?
    Thanks for your support.
