Hand - Off - Auto / Remote - SCADA Architecture Question *All You Super Users Read This*

I am new to the forum. I have searched the net for almost 6 months on this and haven't really found a good response....
I have been around the block a few times with various control systems(Arduino/Labview/AllenBradley/general SCADA) and am trying to figure out how to build a "proper" control system on the cheap. I used to use alot of Labview in School so that is how I ended up here.
What I want to do is have Hand Control at the Machine (Arduino Control System / or something) be able to switch that to Auto/Remote (Labview or some other language) then have that talk to SCADA (Thingspeak, SQL, havent figured this part out yet).
My question is how would you do it? I am a pretty good programmer and know just about every language so nothing is off the table. Seriously I would like to see some creative action.
I dont think LIFA is the best cause I need LOCAL control of all the variables. I would like to have PID loops etc running on the Arduino. I need to be controlling serial attached machines. I have some RS-485/232 going to VFDs and a dSPiN as well.
However, when I want to control it remotely, I would like to be able to pass set points if in auto mode or even better, in addition, be able to override auto and drill down into each attached component and control it in Hand remotely.
I know I could do this by building everything in VIs then linking through LIFA and using the VI as my hand/auto. However, I do not trust the link between LIFA and the Arduino that much. Also I do not know the capability of LIFA to do the RS-485 and serial data to the dSpiN. I need to be on Ethernet/Wifi, and if the controller goes down we may have a legitimate safety problem; hence why I want local control as my backup.
Further more how would you do the SCADA? I dont want to spend 4K on a Full Labview License.....I would prefer just using the iPad app and some free online services...I will  have a server running all the time as well.
If LIFA can be used to do some of this please let me know....Any links to past projects by people would be a huge help.
My Plan right now is:
Machine Data/Control sent to Arduino over RS-485 , 4-20ma and SPI.
Local Control on the Arduino. Local Arduino connected LCD displays Key Parameters.
Send Local Main Variables *Set Point / Run / Stop Etc / Key Data* over Serial or Hacked LIFA to Labview over ethernet or wi-fi.
Labview acts as main supervisory "go-between" and provides all main "in house" HMI support
Real time proccesing happens in Labview and is displayed on labview VIs; Realtime data is also sent out remotely over a service for world wide access.
Labview also sends all real time data to historical service of some kind either (web based or local based) (will be locally hosted)
Access historical data remotely by some means (API / Webservice)
Remote World Wide Access to Labview and thus machine, through Labview iPad app or VPN into house.
World Wide Historical Access through API or Webpage.
That is where I am at in my thinking. Please blow it up and make it better.
I appreciate y'alls help. I posted this in the Arduino Section and they told me to post here.
~Colin

Hello Colin,
Unfortunately I am not familiar with the overall architecture but, if you need to build a SCADA type system, you can use LabVIEW Datalogging and Supervisory Control (DSC) Module. It’s an add-on to LabVIEW and a lower cost alternate option to other SCADA programs out there.
The LabVIEW software is not a free tool, but will save you time developing your project. Also if you use one provider, your support request will be handled from one source, therefore making your development process more efficient.
Please refer to the following links in case you are interested in evaluating the LabVIEW Software and LabVIEW Datalogging and Supervisory Control (DSC) Module.

Where do I get the latest software, drivers and firmware?
Click the link Support > Downloads on this page.
In general, when installing on a new PC you need to download the driver, and some software to communicate with the player e.g. MediaSource, Media Explorer. For players using the v2.xx MTP/PlayForsure firmware drivers are not necessary, but you must have Windows XP and Windows Media Player 0 (this provides the MTP driver).
Important: Even though files are described as updates, none of the software requires a previous version to install. At worst they will prompt you to connect your player to verify you own a Creative product.
Note if you are downloading MediaSource make sure to download and install the relevant MediaSource plugin for your player. If MediaSource can't detect your player this is the first thing to check. For the v.xx PDE firmware the plugin is called the Creative Zen and NOMAD Jukebox plugin for Creative MediaSource , and for the v2 MTP/PlayForSure firmware it's called Creative MediaSource Plugin for PlaysForSure devices .

I'm having connection problems with my player
If you can, the best test is to try your player with another PC, to see if you still have the problem. This localises whether the problem is with the PC (most likely the USB) or the player. See the link below (search on "connection problems") for a lot more troubleshooting on this.
What bit-rate should I encode my music at?
Ultimately it's down to your ears what bit-rate you prefer, and you should listen for yourself to determine it. If you ask on the forum you'll get many different opinions.
Make sure to look at the "MP3 vs. WMA" link below also.
How long should my battery last?
For the Zen and Nomad Jukebox players, to get some idea of how long your battery will last for a given bit-rate look at the battery curves thread. Ultimately battery life is dependent on how you use the player, make sure to follow the "why doesn't my battery last as long as expected?" link below.
How long does an RMA take?
Typically 2 weeks. But it might take a little longer, so don't start posting if it's 5 days.
I want to know how people feel about their Zen Micro/Touch/MuVo etc.
There's a long post titled Experience with your Creative player that has many posts from users about their players. Please search back for threads about specific players before starting a new thread.
Where can I buy online music or get legal downloads for my player?
    See this thread.
My tracks don't play at the correct speed e.g. they play too slowly, why?
Chances are they are encoded in an unsupported sampling frequency. The tracks will need to be re-encoded at a supported bit-rate and/or frequency with something like Creative's MediaSource Audio Converter or dbPowerAmp.
Can a Creative player work on an Apple Mac?
It isn't officially supported, but some kind folks out there have written freeware applications to get your Creative player working with Macs. XNJB provides support for the Zen players, and requires OS X 0.3 or 0.4 (check the site for full details). MuVoHelper solves some problems with getting the MuVo to work optimally. The iTunes Zen plugin should support all Zen players. Note if the link to the plugin is broken just Google "iTunes Zen plugin" to find other sources. Also note there's no guarantee that these programs will work with the Mac, so if you have issues you should address your problems to the developer(s) of the relevant program.
Can a Creative player work on Linux?
Again it isn't officially supported, but again some kinds folks out there have written freeware applications to get your Creative player working. There's the Gnomad2 project. And don't forget the Linux forum at Nomadness.net if you are still having problems.
    Tag Based Players
This section covers the players that use a hard disk and work using tags e.g. Zen Xtra, Touch, Micro, Sleek.
My Zen is not behaving properly, won't startup, or goes into rescue mode. What should I do?
If the Zen is not starting properly or not behaving correctly, first try to reset it. To reset all players except for the Zen Micro there is a small switch on the side of the player typically, that you should press using something like a bent paper clip. Don't use anything sharp. To reset the Zen Micro simply remove the battery and replace it.
If this doesn't work then access rescue mode, and try running a disk cleanup.
Next you should try reloading the firmware/OS, but beware if you are having connection problems also with your PC you may end up with a player that has no firmware and cannot be reloaded.
The last resort is to format the player. This will erase the contents from the player, including the content that ships with the player.
If none of these resolve the problem and you are under warranty you should get in contact with support to arrange replacement of the player.
If you aren't under warranty Creative will still repair the player, which you can arrange by contacting support.
How do I do a Disk Cleanup and/or access Rescue/Recovery Mode?
Refer to the sticky Rescue Mode thread. Disk Cleanup is accessed from this. Note that the MuVo players (with the exclusion of the MuVo? players) do not have Rescue Mode.
How long should a Disk Cleanup take?
It should only take a few minutes, and no longer than 30 minutes. Anything longer than this and there is a problem with the player and you need to contact Creative Support.
How long should a format take?
Only a few seconds. Anything more than a minute and there is a problem with the player and you need to contact Creative Support.
Although I can get into Rescue Mode, I can't select any option, or the options don't work?
If Rescue Mode is not working properly or commands can't be chosen the player is faulty. You need to contact Creative Support.
When are the Zen 20Gb/Neeon going to be released outside of the Asia Pacific region?
Due to popular request the Neeon is launched in the USA, but nowhere else for now. If you want the Neeon then contact your regions Customer Services to request it.
The Zen 20Gb is available from some shops in the USA and Europe e.g. Cambridge Soundworks, and Amazon.co.uk.
Is there a known issue with the Zen Micro headphone socket?
Creative Support have neither confirmed nor denied it officially. Some users have posted purported emails from Creative on the forum saying that the socket has been reinforced, but these have not been confirmed by Creative Support either. The exact incidence of the problem is unknown, but newer players seem to suffer less from it.
Should I buy the Zen Micro or Touch etc. and what colour should it be?
We can't tell you what player to get, or what colour it should be. Look at your collection size and the features of the player (see Nomadworld.com for the product pages) and decide yourself based on this.
Why does my Zen Micro battery drain so quickly?
The standby time (24 hours from turn-off) for the Zen Micro seems to use a lot more power than previous Zens. Creative have released both v (..0+) and v2 (2.20.05+) firmware that reduces the standby time to 4 hours. Make sure to update to one of these if you have a draining problem.
Also see JazzMC's detailed page on this problem.
Why is my Zen Micro/Touch Touchpad so sensiti've and/or difficult to use?
The Touchpads take some time to get used to.

  • Nokia 5233 Storage Question. You need to know this...

Hi, I'm not new to Discussions. PLEASE NOTE BEFORE READING THIS THREAD: I've digged EVERYwhere you can think of, so please have in mind that I come here because I really need to know this, I don't want to double-post anything or start a spam war or something. Thank you.
I was facing problems with my device, Nokia 5233. Sometimes the phone asks for too much time to do a simple task, and I have tried to defragment the memory card to see if it helps, but in the end it made no difference at all.
After that, I was recording a video and it went just fine. The problem happened later on, when I decided to view the video and it was lagging the image. I mean, the image was freezing sometimes but the audio was OK. I recorded another video after that and it had the same symptoms. NOTE: THE MEMORY CARD WAS WITH 1GB+ OF STORAGE REMAINING AVAILABLE TO BE USED.
This is about the stock memory card that comes with the cellphone, 2GB storage capacity, Micro SD card.
After I was told that this is a symptom of the memory card, I wonder if this is supposed to happen with the card that comes with the cellphone. I was **bleep** because I REALLY f***ing need those videos and this turned out to be a real nightmare because when I tried to back up my data using Nokia's software, I ended up with a corrupted file, it was supposed to be a BACKUP and the software just MOVED my SMS messages from the cellphone to my computer and I now can't move it back to the cellphone. But here, my deal is the memory, I changed it to another, higher capacity card, a Kingston Micro SDHC 4GB memory card. And still, I'm facing another issue:
I want to know what is the REAL extended memory capacity for Nokia 5233
I ask this because after googling about it for a few hours, I've found so many different opinions...First a guy said it's best not to upgrade the amount of memory at all, because of my device's limitation, second I read somewhere else I can upgrade the amount of memory up to 8GB and the phone "will still recognize it" and then just when I thought I was done with it, I have talked to Nokia Care on Twitter about it and they said I can be facing 'compatibility issue' with it.
According to his statement, "Unsupported memory cards may just work for small sizes of data, but might give issues wt bigger amounts, depending on the mmc".
That explains the issue with my cellphone's default video recorder/player. But then, again, Is that supposed to happen with a stock memory card?! I guess it's NOT, is it?
AND THEN, AGAIN, NOTE: THE MEMORY CARD WAS WITH 1GB+ OF STORAGE REMAINING AVAILABLE TO BE USED.
So, AFTER recording a 71MB video file, I was viewing it again, kinda hoping it was happening again because this time, it is a 4GB of memory.
I now decided to dig a little bit using Wikipedia, and then I found what I was afraid of:
"Devices that use SD cards identify the card by requesting a 128-bit identification string from the card. For standard-capacity SD cards, 12 of the bits are used to identify the number of memory clusters (ranging from 1 to 4,096) and 3 of the bits are used to identify the number of blocks per cluster (which decode to 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, or 512 blocks per cluster).
In older 1.x implementations the standard capacity block was exactly 512 bytes. This gives 4,096 × 512 × 512 = 1 gigabyte of storage memory. A later revision of the 1.x standard allowed a 4-bit field to indicate 1,024 or 2,048 bytes per block instead, theoretically yielding up to 4 gigabytes of memory storage. However the specification specifies 2 gigabytes as the maximum capacity.
Host devices designed before this change may incorrectly identify such cards, usually by misidentifying a card with less capacity than is the case by assuming 512 bytes per block rather than 1,024 or 2,048.
For the new SDHC (2.0) implementation, 32 bits of the identification string are used to indicate the memory size in increments of 512 bytes. The SDCA currently allows only 26 of the 32 bits to be used, giving a maximum size of 32 GB. All SD cards with a capacity larger than 4 GB must use the 2.0 implementation at minimum. Two bits that were formerly reserved and fixed at 0, now called the "CSD Structure", are being used for identifying the type of card, 0 is standard capacity; 1 is high (SDHC) and extended (SDXC) capacity; 2 and 3 are reserved. Older host devices are not aware of this new field thus cannot correctly identify SDHC or SDXC cards."
    Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_sd_hc
So in other words, it can be that my device does not recognize my Kingston SDHC 4GB Micro DS Card correctly. Oh I mean the STOCK, 2GB Micro SD card. And POSSIBLY my Kingston SDHC card.
    Is that correct?
What is the storage limitation for Nokia 5233?
Please answer this guys, I hope we can share the knowledge to anyone else who's planning to upgrade the memory for their Symbian-based smartphones.

I don't mean the card class, I just meant the card type. Nokia is SUPPOSED to work out with majority of the cards out there, specially Symbian devices, so you can take the card off of your previous Symbian-based cellphone and then USE IT on another Symbian-based device, regardless if it is SD or SDHC.
Look, I just want to know these:
What is the storage limitation for Nokia 5233?
Is Nokia 5233 supposed to work with SDHC or not?
    Simple as that.

I don't think you can do it without creating your own Z version of the FM...When the HU Key is generated, the key is registered so it can be used in other processes....If you generate your own key, you would need to registered in the same tables so you don't have any troubles later...
AFAIK there's no User-Exits for FM...So you can't modify the value after the FM finish its job...

  • Working off a remote harddrive

Please could someone tell me is it possible to keep all my photos on a remote harddrive and then organise, edit etc them using photoshop elements 4.0 on windows vista?
Ideally i would like to work off my remote hard drive (with all the photos on) and then use two computers to update, organise, tag and edit etc my photos is this possible...if so how do i do this?
How would i then back my photos up?

    >change edit them via two computers....maybe with two different forms of photoshop!
There is no way to have two different versions of elements update the same catalog, for one thing. When you upgrade to a new version of elements your catalog converts, yes, but the old catalog is not aware of changes made to the new catalog, and the new catalog is not aware of subsequent changes to the old version.

  • Hand off only working in one direction

I've been trying to get hand-off to work between my iPhone 6 and Macbook Pro Retina mid 2012. It works okay when creating a mail document on the macbook and handing off to the iPhone 6. But I can't get it to work the other way around. I'm expecting a mail icon to the left of the finder on the docking bar when I create an email on my iPhone, but nothing appears. Anyone else got this problem?

This is funny, I have got the same issue with the other way around:
    I am running:
    iMac 27'' late 2012
    iPhone 5
    iPad Air
The hand off is working in every device, all the phone calls are shown and can be answered in every device BUT, when using the continuity feature the thing is weird, if I open mail, pages... on my iPhone, it will show at the iMac and at the blocked screen of the iPad the pertinent icon, but if I open the same app on my iPad Air, or iMac it WILL NOT SHOW the icon at the blocked screen of the iPhone!
    Any Ideas, please?

  • Wiki Server Requires "All logged in users" set to R&W

I continue to try and resolve spurious issues and unpredictable behavior.  Now, I'm trying to rebuild a group wiki page because I could not control any of the permissions on the existing page.  The purpose of the wiki is only to provide a shared calendar among a small subset (call them managers) of the users in the workgroup.
In order to make it so that "managers" would be the only people who could read and write to this calendar, I tried to set the wiki permissions to support this:
         managers                         read & write
all logged in users              read only
         all unathenticated users     no access
I could not get this to work.  The only way I can get it so one of the users in the manager group can create or edit events in the calendar is if I have "All logged in users" set to read and write, which to me defeats the purpose of groups.
Either something is still jacked up with my wiki permissions (I did migrate from SLS quite some time ago but have never felt everything was working really reliably) or I am misunderstanding how the wiki permmissions are supposed to work.
Can someone help me with this, please?

Having the same problem. I'd be interested in know if you managed to resolved this?

  • Yet another question about you tube/ios6

    Hi All
Ok. I downloaded jasmin looks excellent and actually found my missing favorite videos. But, now they pop up that "you tube" has restricted them!!! yet they play on my imac.
Does anyone know why you tube would suddenly restrict a perfectly harmless set of videos ( musical band, playing cover versions of U2) so nothing that would warrent restricting play. (only happens on the ipad)
Why does the Ipad not play these videos. It plays others ok.
Does anyone know how I can overcome this problem please?
    Thanks.
    Tricia.

The GT70 CAN come with an adapter that has 2 (on the older, GT70 0NX models) or 3 (on newer GT70 20X models) sockets for mSATA drives. It's an optional part, that takes place of the primary SATA drive in the notebook, and physically has a different part that connects to the motherboard. If it doesn't come with the SuperRaid adapter, then it just has support for a single 2.5" SATA drive.
The GS70 on the otherhand, has this built into the motherboard and there is no swapping it out for a normal 2.5" SATA drive. You can only use mSATA drives (on those ports). The GS70 is meant to be an ultrabook, and therefore does not have the same ability as the GT70 to house up to 2 full size 2.5" SATA drives.
That's really the main difference here. Without physically seeing a GT70 to see how the SuperRaid adapter works, it's slightly difficult to explain.
But in the end, I wouldn't worry about the SuperRaid....The GS70 should have support for Intel Raid Management Engine, in which case that's all you really need.

Did you actually download the installer from Apple or did you use Software Update.  You can download the installer http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Maybe I'm old fashioned but I would consider repairing permissions first using Disk Utility because something caused this to go wrong the first time.  And of course make a backup of your whole library first.  It shouldn't happen but some have complained about their libraries being wiped out by iTunes updates.  Better safe...
