Hard drive partition device files not consistent between reboots

For a reason I'm not completely certain of, the Hardware Abstraction Layer is causing my partition file descriptors to be different between bootups - causing a plethora of fstab-related issues.
I have two hard drives in my computer, the primary one according to the bios being where GRUB and Arch are installed to. Ironically, when it works, this drive is given "sdb." /etc/fstab is written to mount the partitions on sdb.
The secondary hard drive has Windows 7 installed to it. This drive, when Arch Linux boots up properly, is considered "sda."
However, half the time since enabling the HAL daemon, sda can become sdb and vice versa - causing partition mounting to screw up, naturally.
I'll also note that attempting to mount sda2 (windows 7) in fstab causes the Arch drive to always be sda. Rather frustrating, seeing as how I use symlinks to the Windows 7 user folders in my Arch user folders (Documents, Pictures, etc).

External Hard drive and dmg files suddenly not mounting. Im running Mavericks on 27" iMac. Anyone have a fix or has anyone else suddenly had this problem? There was a Mavericks update a few weeks ago, but things were fine until today. This is weird. Ive checked in disk utility and can see one of my two external HD's, the one that I back up. But not even this will mount. Ive tried repairing HD thinking it was damaged but now see that all my ext hd's suddenly dont mount. Ive tried several mac restarts.

Solved the problem. My external HD is a WD (My Book Studio). I needed to install updated driver manager and this fixed it:

I have a 500 gb hard drive partitioned for files and time machine but when i connect it to my mac only the time machine one shows up

well as the title says i have a 500gb hard drive with 2 partitions one with time machine and one for files it worked perefectly until yesterday only the time machine partition appeared in finder, i checked disk utility and both partitions appeared but the one for files appeared in grey and when i press mount an error comes up.

The repair shop likely replaced a major circuit board on your MacBook Pro, so Time Machine thinks that you have a "new" computer and it wants to make a new complete backup of your Mac.
You are going to have to make a decision to either add another new Time Capsule....or USB drive to your existing Time Capsule....and in effect start over with a new backup of your Mac and then move forward again.
For "most" users, I think this is probably the best plan because you preserve all your old backups in case you need them at some point, and you start over again with a new Time Capsule so you have plenty of room for years of new backups.
Or, as you have mentioned, you have the option of erasing the Time Capsule drive and starting all over again. The upside is that you start over and have plenty of room for new backups. The downside is that you lose years of backups.
Another option....trying to manually delete old backups individually....is tricky business....and very time consuming. To get an idea of what is involved here, study this FAQ by Pondini, our resident Time Capsule and Time Machine expert on the Community Support area. In particular, study the pink box.

Once you look through this, I think you may agree that this type of surgery is not for the faint of heart. I would suggest that you consider this only if one of the other options just cannot work for you.

External Hard Drive Partition, Erased Files. HELPPPP!

Something went wrong and has now "erased" all my files on my external hard drive (used for backing up with TM), after adding a partition second partition. I did not install anything onto the newly created partition as my focus was then distracted by the fact that all my data had now been erased.

I wanted to boot Snow Leopard from my external hard drive. So I used Disk Utility to add a partition on my external hard drive (clicking the + sign). The drive had around 264 GB (shaded in blue), with approximately 34GB free. So I type the newly desired partition of 8GB. Disk Utility was saying explicitly that "this partition will not be erased", referring to the original partition of 264GB that will become approximately 272GB, the one that contains all my files. I say to myself, okay, that is safe as it is telling me my files will not be erased.
With the partitions split and my original data of 264GB still shaded in blue, I click apply.
A box prompts me to confirm partition, reading:
"Partitioning this disk will change some of the partitions. No partitions will be erased"
This partition will be added:
"Snow Leopard HD"
This Partition will be resized:
"My Passport"
So obviously I confirm and click Partition...
It took about 30 seconds or under to partition and then I noticed my original partition was no longer shaded in blue but was completely empty
I open my external hard drive in Finder and none of my files are visible.
I open Time Machine and it is not displaying any of my back ups and will no longer back up. Its says Latest Backup: Failed i
So I click on the i button and it says:
Time Machine Error
The backup volume could not be found.
At this point I am panicking! I followed every step correctly and it clearly stated no files would be erased.
What has happened here? and how can I retrieve my lost files?

Using external hard drive for music files NOT in iTunes music folder

Hi there. Due to lacking disk space on my computer I have all my music files (that I had before using iTunes) on an external HD. I can easily import these drives to iTunes (v.8) without copying them to the iTunes music folder. But when I want to synchronize my iPod the next time, iTunes cannot find the files on my external HD and I have to import them all again, delete all the duplicates and - worst of all - do all the playlist sorting again! Is there a solution to this without putting all my music into the iTunes music folder (I would like to keep it separated)? Thanks in advance!

I use an external firewire drive to store my iTunes library on. One thing to be aware of...
You need to go into your iTunes preferences, then to "Advanced", then select the location where you want to store your iTunes Music folder. In my case it is in a folder titled "Music" on my external firewire drive. The iTunes "Library" file is stored on your internal hard drive.
The thing that can cause you problems it that....if you forget to turn on the external drive before you boot up your Mac, the iTunes library file will look for your music folder and won't be able to find it. So a new iTunes Music folder will be created on your internal hard drive, with nothing in it. You'll see all of your songs listed in your iTunes program...but if you try to double click on any of the songs to play them, you'll get an exclamation mark saying "cannot find file".
If this happens, you need to delete the new iTunes Music folder on your internal drive (but not the iTunes Library file!), then quit iTunes, turn on the external drive, then relaunch iTunes....and it will find the original music folder.
It's a hassle that I have had to go though many times, I keep forgetting to turn on that drive before launching iTunes.
Oh, one other thing....about the way you worded your post. You aren't running short on "memory", you are running short on "storage"....they are two different things. Hard drives are storage, RAM chips are "memory" that run your programs.

External Hard Drive via firewire - files not showing up

I have a new external harddrive formatted for mac and keep having the following issue:
when clicking into the harddrive I see folder but when I go to a folder to see the files they are all gone. If I use spotlight to search then I can open the file. I can re-boot and the the files appear.
Anyone have a clue on what this might be. I hate to keep rebooting it is making think I went back to windows

Never seen the problem myself with either of my FireWire Drives, but open Disk Utility in your Utilities Folder select First Aid, then the External HD's icon and run Repair Disk.

Clear hard drive before upgrade - files not deleting???

Hi,
I'm upgrading to Mavericks later today on my MacBook Air and I have transferred files to an external drive and deleted them from my MacBook.
I've also deleted Pages, Keynote and Numbers. All those related files were in iCloud, and two restarts and a Disk Utility later the files still show in Finder under All My Files.
About This Mac also shows 1.12gigs of Audio, 1.64 gigs of Movies and 5.03 gigs of Photos, but there are no files like that left on the Mac.
Could this be Photostream? Should Photostream even take up space on a computer?
Also, does 16.69 gigs of "Other" sound right with 17.04 gigs of Apps?

Hard drive maintenance - deleting files not needed?

I noticed that everytime I download/install a itunes or ipod update, a new folder is created in
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations
Each folder contains some very large ipod/itunes related files. Do I need these after I've installed the updater? Can I delete them? Do I need to keep only the most recent? Or can I delete that, too?

You can delete all of them. However, in order to use the 'repair' option in Add/Remove Programs in the event of an error, you may want to keep the latest version of the installers.

New 60 gb hard drive installed, ibook will not reboot

This is my first time using this type of support. Please share your advice as I learn the appropriate "norms" of the discussion system.
Computer:
2001 apple g3 ibook
dual usb ports
500 mgh
320 DRAM
10gb hard drive just swapped out for a 60 gb hard drive
Operating System:
I started out with the OS9 and OSX system configuration... I have since changed over to OSX exclusively... My current system is OSX 3.9 .
I have the original install disks and all of the other OSX upgrade disks available...
Problem:
My ibook kept saying that I did not have enough space on my start-up drive... I bought and installed a 60 gb hard drive after backing my hard drive up on an external hard drive.
I am unable to reboot my ibook after the install. I have tried holding the C button on start-up. I get a smiling face folder with a question mark flashing every few minutes. I have tried holding the X button on start-up. I get a "padlock_________arrow button". I have tried to put in my administrative password in the space between the padlock and the arrow button. When I do this, I see lots of dots flashing from left to right. I was hoping that the ibook was trying to boot from the external hard drive.
I have not tried to reboot with the original install disks that I received in 2001. I will try this today.
I am assuming that I put the install disk in and hold the C button as the chime sounds... If this gets me into the system, then what do I do...
I thought I knew what I was doing...but...

First please confirm what sort of install disks you have. Your iBook originally shipped with 10.0.3. Do you have the 10.3.x Panther retail full install CDs?

I do have the 10.0.3 install disks. I also have the full 10.2 install disk. I have the 10.3 update disk.
Problem:
I have tried to boot up using the 10.0.3 and the 10.2 install disks. I held the C button down as the chime was ending. I released the C button when I saw the folder symbol appear on my desktop... The folder has the OSX image on it... I do not have a curser available...
Any ideas?
I am trying to think back... I backed up my original hard drive to an external hard drive... I was under the impression that the external would act as a "bootable" disk...
I installed a new 60 gb hard drive.
I tried to reboot my computer with the C button pushed for the disk start up... folder appears with OSX logo on it.
and with the option down... also the X down... padlock appears with an arrow to its right.

Short answer: You do NOT have to reinstall all your apps and copy your files back.
Longer answer: Upgrading the OS does not touch any user files. Upgrading the OS should not interfere with any applications which are compatible with Mavericks. In my experience non-Apple apps are generally left unchanged by the upgrade. It is possible that some apps may need to be upgraded. One good resource for checking application compatibility is RoaringApps.
Finally, it is always wise to backup everything, just in case.

Sounds like a permissions problem ie read only.
If running repair permissions from your DiskUtility.app does not sort it,

Hello, The Hatter, I read about the 'trick' of backing up, erasing, and restoring too, but I figured it would take longer than defragmenting the disk.
But the defragmentation process has just finished! so I'm gonna try to run Boot Camp again soon!

And P.S. I didn't clone my system onto the external drive, I just inserted the Mac OS X Install CD, rebooted holding down the "C" key, and installed a fresh Snow Leopard system onto the predetermined partition. I will use that in cases of emergency, when my main/internal system becomes unusable.

Sometimes the clips actually show up with the current import but take on the video information from a previously imported file.

It was suggested I move this question to IPhoto or IMovie which I did.
Well moving to a different discussion group did not provide an answer to this question either. But what I finally did was import one batch of photos and videos into IPhoto for a given day at a time. Working with these I could change the date and times in order to get them in the original sequench taken. Then I would create an album with that batch. These would all be on the same day (IMove was closed for this phase). Then I would open IMovie, generate the thumbnails for that album, and select the album I had created. This was necessary because the importing process in IPhoto was using incorrect dates for my video so it was a real struggle finding them in IMove until I developed this approach.
I believe that this whole process was so screwy because I was importing from an external hard drive not a camera. I had these photos on a PC and did not have the original cameras to use to import directly which I am fairly sure would have made this easier!

Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). Because of this, you can't use a Mac-formatted iPod or external drive to move your music to a Windows PC. See iPod: How to determine iPod's hard disk format if you're not sure how your iPod is formatted.
Mac OS X can read Windows-formatted iPods and drives. This means there are many ways to migrate your information from your old Windows-based PC to your new Mac.
Mac OS X: To be sure external drives appear on your desktop, choose Preferences from the Finder menu. Be sure the options for "External disks" and "Hard disks" are enabled.

What are you using to search? You should be able to search any drive in from the Finder. If you're having trouble, try "EasyFind" from the App Store (free). You can search any volumes with it.
