Hard drive volume appears in sidebar Favorites when new disk mounts

Hard drive on my 17” MacBook Pro Quad Core i7 (2.5 GHz, 8GB SDRAM OS 10.8.2) is partitioned into 4 volumes; I'll call them A-Mountain Lion startup drive, B-Personal, C-Work, D-minimal clean Mt. Lion for emergencies. Problem relates to my regular boot drive.
I have Finder sidebars set to show 8 or 10 folders in the "Favorites" section and have ticked all boxes in the "Devices" section. Most of the time I have no external disks, CDs, etc., connected to the MBP, so the Devices section generally shows my computer and the four partitions. So far, so good.
Lately, every time an external volume is mounted and every time a disk image is mounted, the Personal volume (B) of my internal drive, which is already showing under Devices, also pops up in the Favorites section of the sidebar. I remove it from the Favorites, but the next time an external disk or a disk image mounts, there it is again. It's always volume B, never A, C, or D.
I have tried everything I can think of to cure this odd behavior: Used Disk Utility (verify all disks/volumes; repair volumes; repair permissions; etc.), though nothing seemed wrong. I've run Disk Warrior on all volumes. I cleaned out everything possible on the startup drive (A) with the latest version of Onyx. I've repeatedly trashed the plists I could identify in my user Library that had "sidebar" or "finder" in their names. I've logged in and out; started and restarted; started with shift key down. Still, every time a new volume or disk mounts, up pops this extra volume B among the Favorites (where it shouldn't be). I checked and unchecked various combinations of sidebar items in Finder Preferences. I've Forced Quit the Finder. It doesn't matter whether all, some, or no devices are checked; when a new disk mounts, there's the extra volume B again.
I have only two other clues to add. (1) I created a new temporary user account on my startup drive (volume A), and this behavior did NOT occur in the new account. (2) This same behavior had arisen once before, a couple of months ago. I went through similar blind attempts to cure it then, but at some point I must have done something right because I it got fixed. For the life of me, I can't remember which of all the things I tried did the trick.
Many thanks to anyone who can shed light on this annoying behavior.

I can add a bit to my earlier description. I had said the problem did not occur in a new user account. Well, after using the new account for a while, it showed up. Eventually I erased the startup volume and installed Mountain Lion (plus updates to 10.8.2) fresh. I used migration assistant to transfer only my old user, pared down applications, and network settings -- no preferences, application support stuff. The old user carried over the problem. But I immediately created a new user and have been working from it for the past two weeks, very gradually opening apps, adjusting settings, etc., and testing for the anomaly at each change. In some cases I did move preferences from a backup clone, but was always careful to test after each addition. All was well for a week, until one morning I noticed the data partition had appeared in sidebar Favorites. So I'm back to where I was. I had been documenting each change or introduction I made. The only things my notes said from the day before the sidebar anomaly appeared was launching and struggling to activate QuarkXPress 9.3, and copying over my old prefs and settings for TextWrangler. I completely removed every trace of QXP, but the problem remained. (I did not remove TextWrangler because I just can't believe it could be the culprit -- but could it?)
I also noticed a similar (though maybe not identical) problem posted in another thread <https://discussions.apple.com/message/20591050#20591050>, but so far no answers there either.

  • Dead hard drive-how to format and startup with new disk

I have a 9 month old non-retina MBP. I replaced the HD with an SSD when I bought it. It seems the SSD has stopped working and I need to replace it. Grrr. I do have a Time Capsule backup that I can use, but how do I install the OS on the replacement SSD? After I have the MBP running with the new SSD, I should be able to reinstall everything else from the Time Capsule backup. I have another MBP that I can use for assistance/transferring/formatting if this will be helpful. Will Apple store Genius help me to do this? I would not be surprised that any warranty coverage may have been voided when I installed the SSD. I could use the other MBP to format the new SSD before installing it.

Your computer has got Internet Recovery. Use it to restore your backup.
To start in Internet Recovery, hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your computer is starting. Then, open Disk Utility, choose your hard disk at the top of the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk using "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as format.
Finally, close Disk Utility, plug the external disk with your backup, select the option to restore a Time Machine backup and follow its steps

And what happens if you play the files directly of the external drive?

  • PLEASE HELP! My external Hard drive is no longer showing up when plugged in

I have a Western Digital My Book external hard drive using USB2. I have always plugged it in and the hard drive icon appears on my desktop. However, the drive does not appear anymore. It does not appear in the finder, but can be seen using disk utility. I have tried restarting my computer, trying different USB ports, and nothing seems to work.
I am completely loosing my mind, as I have not backed up the majority of the contents on this drive and need this drive to work!
Is there anything I can do? Is there anything I'm missing? Please help me quickly!

If the Disk Utility lists it in gray, click on the Repair Disk button for it or attempt recovery of its contents.
If the Disk Utility lists it in black, check the settings in the General and Sidebar tabs of the Finder's preferences. If that doesn't work, click here and follow the instructions.

  • How can I partition an external hard drive with data in it? When I select the drive, the partition option is grayed out.

I am having a problem partitioning an external hard drive with data in it.
When I select the partition, everything is grayed out.  I can't add a a partition for some reason.  When I asked this question to other people, they told me to select my partition "io" to do it from there.
As you can see, I can't seem to partition it form there either.  I ran the Verify Disk utility but the volume came out okay.
Any ideas as to what the problem would be?
    Thanks!
    Luis

Select the main hard drive entry (topmost one.) Click on the Partition tab. Shrink the existing partition by grabbing the sizing gadget in the bottom right corner and pushing up until you free up enough space for your second partition. Be sure you do not shrink to less than the space currently occupied by your files. Click on the Add[+] button to create a new partition in the free space. Click on the Apply button and wait until the partitioning is completed.

  • Hard drive icon appears as folder icon in dock

When I drag the hard drive icon for any of my hard drives (Mac Pro) to the dock, a folder icon rather than hard drive icon appears in the dock. It functions properly, accessing the full drive, but is harder to distinguish from the other folders in the dock.
Why does this happen? Is there any way to get the hard drive icon to appear in the dock?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
    Why does this happen?
Directories (like the Hard drive) show up as folders when added to the dock.
Is there any way to get the hard drive icon to appear in the dock?
You bet. Make an alias to the Hard Drive (you can put it inside the hard drive itself if you like). Then drag the alias to the dock. It will show up as the drive.
    Hope the helps.

  • I recently reset my computer and copy my music from an external hard drive to my itunes library.  When I click on a song to play i get an error message that says " the song could not be used because the original file could not be found".  need help

I recently reset my computer and copy my music from an external hard drive to my itunes library.  When I click on a song to play i get an error message that says " the song could not be used because the original file could not be found".  But when I have my external hard drive plug in the song will play with no problem.  What do I need to do to play my music without having the external harddrive plug in ????????  Please help

Because the location for each song in your library is on your hard drive.  If the hard drive isn't there, how can iTunes play it?
You'll have to move/copy the music from your hard drive to your computer's hard drive.
Basically, EASIEST way to do all this, if you don't care about your play counts, etc...
-Delete EVERYTHING from iTunes, so that your library is now empty.
-Go to "Advanced" inside of the "Preferences" window, found in the "Edit" drop-down.  You can also access Preferences by pressing Ctrl+, (Press Ctrl and the comma key)
-Change your iTunes Media Folder Location to something simple, but on your computer. I use C:/iTunes.  Make sure "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and "Copy files to...." are both checked.  You can close Preferences now.
-Now, drag and drop your music from your hard drive into your iTunes library.  iTunes will automatically add the music to your library, as you would expect, and also creates a copy of each file to place into that iTunes Media Folder you just created.
    Shouldn't have any more problems...

Any ideas what do i have to do?

Well, let's hope that nothing was jiggled out of place when you were installing the new hard drive. Your optical drive may just be out of alignment or the disc you have is "dirty." Get a lint-free cloth and some rubbing alcohol, then clean the disc as thoroughly as you can starting from the center and working outward in a concentric circlular motion. See if that helps. In particular clean the inner portion well.
If this does not help, then you have a problem. You have opened the computer yourself. That action voids all support from Apple. If you take the computer in for service the store may refuse to service the computer. This is not related to your now expired warranty.

  • External hard drive shows up under internal hard drive volume?

    History:
Purchased new Macbook Pro and Lightroom 2.
Migrated old Macbook to new Macbook Pro, including Lightroom 1.
Installed Lightroom 2 and updated to Lightroom 2.2.
Had Lightroom 1 images on multiple external hard drives. Moved all images to new 1tb and 1.5tb Lacie external drives.
Imported old catalog into Lightroom 2.2 and now one of the external (1.5tb) shows up under my internal hard drive in Lightroom.
internal hard drive>Volumes>external hard drive>empty image folders
A partial part of this external hard drive (some image folders) also shows up as it's own volume.
I started by selecting missing image folders and using the locate missing folder method. the folders then show up on: internal hard drive>Volumes>external hard drive>image folders
Any suggestions on how to remedy this problem?
    thank you, Shawn

This is reparable, but an Adobe Tech did it. I had this problem some time ago and they fixed it. Dan Tull, one of the Adobe Techs, was accepting Catalogs for investigation and repair. Not sure if he still is.
I have not heard of such problems for a while.

    A few things to try:
1-Repair permissions and restart your computer.
    2-Zap the PRAM
3-Use Software Update/App Store to update your OS to OS 10.10.3.  Also, update everything SU/AS has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

Hello, your best bet would be to clone your drive to an external drive, which will be bootable.

I erased by Hard drive without backing up. Now, when I put the install disc one inside, it says that Mac os x cannot be installed on this computer. The computer was running Mac os x 10.5.8. Any help?

Boot from your DVD by switching on the Mac & inserting the disc, restart it & hold the "C" key. Once the installer window loads & you have selected your language, choose Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu. You will then need to select your disk from the menu within Disk Utility & choose how you wish to format. It should be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Once it has formatted, you should then be able to install the OS.
PLEASE REMEMBER...that formatting a disk will completely erase it's content. Be sure that you don't wish to recover any of your previous content before doing any of the above.
