Harddrive space after re-install of OS

Hey there,
As you might have seen I was previously having a problem with my dock and dashboard, which required me to re-install the OS as there was some issue with the system files. My questions is, I did an archive install as I didn't have an external harddrive (Of course I forgot about my Ipod 30 gig). Now, I have 18 fewer gigs on my system, is there any way that I can get that space back?
Thanks,
John

Take a look at this;
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Your previous system folder has been archived. Once you decide everything is fine, it's fine to delete it. Give it a day or two unless you have no disk space left.
Best of luck

  • Space after SL install

    I see that Apple has said that we should get about 6GB back after SL install. I got 30. Is this normal? What has everyone else been experiencing? I also notice that a 500GB external now shows 500GB of space as opposed to the 465 that it used to show. Thought?

    See http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10120661 for starters. As for 30 GB, that change might explain what you're seeing.

  • Doing Login to WebCenter Spaces after Fresh Install Hangs [ID 976907.1]

    hi
    i have an issue with webcenter spaces ,i searched oracle documentation and found a description and a solution but it is still not working .
    i have oracle webcenter 11.1.1.5 ,installed on oracle Linux Enterprise 5.5 ,installation is made with 3 physical nodes joined to one domain as described on oracle documentation (ID
    the solution is described on document [ID 976907.1]
    Applies to:
    Oracle WebCenter - Version: 11.1.1.1.0 to 11.1.1.5.0 - Release: 11g to 11g
    Information in this document applies to any platform.
    Symptoms
    On : WebCenter Spaces.
    When attempting to login to WebCenter Spaces, the login hangs.
    The WebCenter Spaces diagnostic log (WLS_Spaces_diagnostic.log) shows the following error at the time of login:
    [2009-12-07T10:59:04.645-08:00] [WLS_Spaces] [ERROR] [] [oracle.webcenter.webcenterapp.internal.view.webapp] [tid: [ACTIVE].ExecuteThread: '2' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'] [userId: weblogic] [ecid: 0000ILeW_Ss2bMK5qVh8iY1B7KwH00000F,0] [APP: webcenter] [[

    at oracle.webcenter.webcenterapp.internal.view.security.WCAuthorizationHandler.handleAuthorizationFailure
    (WCAuthorizationHandler.java:62)
    STEPS
    The issue can be reproduced with the following steps:
    1.     Install of WebCenter.
    2.     Start the Node Manager and Managed Servers.
    3.     Access WebCenter Spaces URL:
    http://server:8888/webcenter/spaces
    4.     Attempt to login as weblogic user.
    Here the login hangs.
    Cause
    The domain system-jazn-data.xml file is missing all the security information for WebCenter.
    The file should have entries like this:
    <policy-store>
    <applications>
    <application>
    <name>webcenter</name>
    <app-roles>
    <app-role>
    <name>s8bba98ff_4cbb_40b8_beee_296c916a23ed#-#Administrator</name>
    <guid>A03A67D1E43711DEBF8B15EA0015534D</guid>
    <class>oracle.security.jps.service.policystore.ApplicationRole</class>
    <members>
    <member>
    <class>weblogic.security.principal.WLSUserImpl</class>
    <name>weblogic</name>
    </member>
    </members>
    But in this case the file is missing the security entries for WebCenter like the above.
    Reviewing more entries in the WebCenter Spaces diagnostic log (WLS_Spaces_diagnostic.log) there was another error in the log that indicated file permission errors:
    [2009-12-07T10:53:15.966-08:00] [WLS_Spaces] [WARNING] [JPS-04085] [oracle.jps.deployment] [tid: [ACTIVE].ExecuteThread: '0' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'] [ecid: 0000ILeVDiF2bMK5qVh8iY1B7KwH000000,0] [APP: webcenter] [arg: oracle.security.jps.JpsRuntimeException: java.io.FileNotFoundException: /tmp/jazn-data-577128801xml.lck (Permission denied)] Migration of codebase policy failed. Reason: oracle.security.jps.JpsRuntimeException: java.io.FileNotFoundException: /tmp/jazn-data-577128801xml.lck (Permission denied).
    While checking the permissions on the /tmp/jazn-data-577128801xml.lck file it was noted that it was owned by root user and oracle user did not have permissions on the file.
    Solution
    1.     Shutdown the Node Manager and Managed Servers.
    2.     Change the ownership of the temporary file in /tmp directory to be owned by the user that was used to install WebCenter and that is being used to start WebCenter:
    In this case the file name is: /tmp/jazn-data-577128801xml.lck
    But in your system the name can be different. But the name should be like:
    /tmp/jazn-data-NNNNNNNNNxml.lck
    3.     Ensure the user that was used to install WebCenter has privileges to read, write, and update the above file.
    If needed give grants on the file to the user that was used to install WebCenter.
    4.     Restart WebCenter.
    5.     Re-Test the issue.
    the problem is that i applied the solution but it is not working with me .if i grant (oracle) user which is used to install webcenter a privilege on /tmp/ folder,after restart everything become a in a big mass , that's because there is some files which belongs to root and mustn't be granted to oracle (this is as i understand maybe its wrong) .and if i grant and it is already granted full permission to (oracle) user on the file (jazn-data-NNNNNNNNNxml.lck) it is still not working and XML files is zero size .i do this on webcenter server (host2) and also on soa server (host1) which have admin server .
    is there any advise ? am i missing something ? it is really a big problem to me as we suppose to go live next week !!!

    Joel, in a different posting was able to help me out.
    Below is the steps I used to create a new admin account to by pass the one that seemed to be bad. Everything seems to be working for me now. Thanks for your help.
    alter user FLOWS_020200 account unlock;
    connect FLOWS_020200/apex
    begin
    wwv_flow_api.set_security_group_id(p_security_group_id=>10);
    wwv_flow_fnd_user_api.create_fnd_user(
    p_user_name => 'admin2',
    p_email_address => '[email protected]',
    p_web_password => 'admin2') ;
    end;
    alter user FLOWS_020200 account unlock;

  • Less hard drive space after Lion install

    I have a macbook air with a 64 gig SSD, so storage space is at a premium. I seem to have about 10 gigs less space available after the Lion install. Was there files generated during the Lion install that I can delete, like a backup of the previous install, that would free up some of the lost HD space?

    SOLVED!
    When I ran whatsize as an admin, the first thing I noticed was a .MobileBackups directory chewing up 74GB of space. That reminded me of something I had glanced over quickly in John Siracusa's Lion review on arstechnica.com: http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2011/07/mac-os-x-10-7.ars/18#mobile-time-ma chine
    Basically if you are on a laptop, TimeMachine has a local NFS file server (the volume I saw called MobileBackups earlier) that continues to version everything while you are on the road. It appears to store that in a .MobileBackups directory on your primary HD until you plug in to TimeMachine again.
    Well that's where my space went. Good to know. Thanks for the WhatSize recommendation. Time to go plug this in to TimeMachine and see it go away!

  • Lost HardDrive Space After Deleting Bootcamp Partiton

    Hello, Everyone
    I have a small issue i open finder window and it says that i have 398.18GB Available but when i go into Disk Utility and go to the top result which is called WDC WD6400AAKS-40H2B0 Media it says that my Total Capacity is 640.14 GB so i go to the Partition Tab and it says the following Available Space: 533.58 and the HD Size 639.66 so i go to my Desktop and Get Info on my Macintosh HD and it says my Capacity is 493.79GB and i don't understand where the rest of my space has gone the Macintosh HD says that i have only used 95.61 GB on disk so if you can help me get my rest of my space back it would be much appreciated.
    I have tried repairing it in disk utility but it hasn't worked
    Thanks, Sean

    HI,
    Try repairing disk permissions...
    Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and *restart your Mac*.

  • Airport Disk Showing only unused space after leopard install

    Now that I have gotten Leopard to recognize the Lacie 500 gig disk attached via USB to the AEBS, it will not show the existing files on the hard drive (400 gig worth), but does show the unused disk space and any new files I have added to the disk recently. Can anyone tell me how to get the entire drive to show up with the existing files? Also, when I "Get Info" on the disk it shows that the disk is 500 gig in size.
    If I hook up the lacie disk via firewire directly to my macbook it works normally.
    Thanks
    Eric

    Go to Finder = Preferences
    "General" icon and check [x] Connected Servers
    I had to reboot to make this work. Your mileage may vary per when the disk icon is visible.

  • Missing HD space after install

    Today I did archive install on my Imac to see if would fix a problem which it has, but now I'm missing space. I started with 118.78GB and now after the install and updates i have 115.68GB. Does anyone know what could account for the missing harddrive space. I have deleted the old previous system folder already and the updates I download I had on the previous system
    Fox

    Yea, i did trash the old sys...so i'm not sure what is going on but oh well not like I lost a lot of space its only 3gb being used for something which could have been stuff i previously deleted so I'm not overly worried.

    For what the Apple Store's charge you can buy almost buy a new computer.
    Just for giggles I brought my old laptop in for a drive upgrade and asked, they wanted $600 for a drive that only cost $120 at the time and it was a slow 5,400 RPM drive. The new Mac's of a similar make were going for $1000.
    I did the drive replacement myself, got a faster drive of better quality for $300 instead.
    Then another time I asked for a RAM upgrade from 4GB to 8GB, they wanted to charge $400 + $35 for the labor.
    The same RAM is on Crucial.com for $90 and all I need is a 00 micro phillips screwdriver.
    So you see what's going on here.
    I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
    They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
    With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
    For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine.

  • How many free disk space after install OS X lion (10.7) ?

    Hi,
    I would like to know that how many free disk space after install OS X lion (10.7) on MBA i5.
    Many Thanks,
    Eric

    I want to buy MBA i5, I would like to free disk space of MBA 13" i5, Could anyone tell it to me? Thanks
    As you're buing a new MacBook Air, it will come pre-installed with Lion.  The actual installation will be somewhat larger than a "clean" Lion install as it will come with iLife preinstalled.  Obviously, with an Air's limited storage space, you want to be sure that you have enough room for any applications and data that you'll want to keep on the SSD as well.  It is fairly easy to upgrade the SSD on an Air:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Aura_Pro_Express
    The amount of RAM you have installed is probably more important.  Fortunately, the newest 13" MacBook Airs all come with 4GB standard now.

  • Losing disk space after installing Mavericks

    After installing OS X Mavericks, I had noticed my computer was losing disk space after updating some products. I even shut down my computer to allow it to readjust to the updates, cleared some unnecessary apps, and yet I see my computer losing more space, as if files are being added behind the scenes. I've adjusted my browser Safari to more private settings,even cleared the cache, to avoid this, yet it still occurs. Are there other files I should be clearing?

    the trouble is I don't know what is causing the disk space to be taken. I'm idly using Safari with private browsing set, when I come looking at my finder, seeing the space gradually falling. I was at 695.02 GB available this morning, and now at 694.83 GB available. I've made no downloads in between then, so I'm wondering if this is the result of downloading Mavericks directly from the app store, or if there is a setting I need to fix. I've tried verrifying/repairing the disk, permissions too, but I still see the decrease occurring.

  • IPhoto won't open after new install and restore of back-up

    Hi guys
    My hard drive just died (for the second time in 6 months!) so I have just gotten the computer back with a new drive. I did a new install of Tiger from my original install CDs, did the download thing to get all the updates, and ran a "restore" from my external drive using iBackup (http://www.grapefruit.ch/iBackup//index.html) to restore all my previous system settings, documents, etc. So far this seems to have worked well, a couple of 3rd party applications didn't re-install - specifically Neo Office and WiFind - but I was able to manually install those and everything seems to be working fine.
    Except iPhoto. It won't open. When I click the dock icon it bounces once and does nothing. No little arrow under it or anything. Nothing at all happens when I click the icon in Finder (in the Applications folder). When I searched it in spotlight it told me there was a file called iphoto.crash.log, so I went and had a look at that hoping it would tell me the problem, but I don't understand it. I'm not particularly good at the behind the scenes stuff with computers.
    Wondering what I should do now - if someone can perhaps interpret the log file and find the issue if that would help, or if I should uninstall and re-install iPhoto by itself (and if so, how?), or if there is something else that may be causing the issue. I noticed there are a few files relating to it when I search with spotlight but I don't know which of them might be relevant. I could post a screenshot if that is allowed, or post the log file if it would help?
    Thanks in advance for any advice or help!
    Regards,
    Chloë

    400 Updates???
    Did you Repair Permissions before & after each one?
    The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
    Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
    If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
    If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

    The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
    Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
    If all the above do not resolve the problem, then it's time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

    I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
    That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • Upgrade to Win 7 (64bit) from Vista 32 - Not enough H Disk space after running Windows easy transfer

    Hello all!
    I upgraded from Vista 32 to Windows 7(64bit) using the custom install as per instruction found on Lenovo and the upgrade has gone well.  My machine is running much better and faster now.  However, I tried to transfer my files with easy transfer and I have run out of room on the HD.  After the install, my C drive had about 35 Gigs with no other programs installed except for Win 7.  This seems to be too much memory used for win 7 OS.  I am thinking that other data like past restore data may be taking up a lot of room?  Also my Easy transfer file is 79 gigs which also appears to large of a file.  I have not been able to use Easy Transfer because of lack of drive space.  Can I reformat my HD and run a new win 7 install from the Win 7 upgrade software CD?
    Thanks in advance?

  • Running out of harddrive space - here's a fix.

    Twice now I've run out of harddrive space on my t500 with a 160GB harddrive installed. The first time I called the IBM support people who were as useful as a chocolate teapot.
    This time I turned to the Microsoft forums and finally got it figured out. I don't know if this will get to IBM's tech guys, but perhaps they may want to look into it for their build.
    Vista uses an amount of the drive for Restore points and shadow copies of files. Typically this amount is limited to 15% of the drive space. On my copy of Vista, the setting was UNBOUNDED, which is why it gobbled up the entire harddrive.
    In XP, this setting was controlled by a UI, in Vista, MS took a huge step forward and implemented a command-line utility to ocntrol this setting. (/sarcasm).
    These are the commands to list and set the amount of storage consumed by Vista for restore points and Shadow copies.
    vssadmin List ShadowStorage
    vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /on=C: /For=C: /MaxSize=5GB
    Note that I set mine to 5GB which is substantially less than the default 15% of the harddrive. If you use this, use your own discretion.
    The question of course is why I received a system with this set as follows:
    C:\Users\Mike>vssadmin List ShadowStorage
    vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
    (C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp.

    Shadow Copy Storage volume: (C:)\\?\Volume{a589e9af-cf02-19dd-bec8-001c259b5b
    c3}\
    Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 6.656 GB
    Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 9.108 GB
    Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: UNBOUNDED
      Not that I expect IBM will 'fess up, but what the hey.

    After re installing Mac OS X 10.4.8, I lost my documents and pictures. Can I retrieve them some how?

    If you did a Clean Install, the files are gone. If you did an update from Panther, the is a possibility there is an Archive Folder with all of your files in it.. the best way to find out, is looks at your hard drive space, if its small, you lost them.

  • MacBook REALLY slow after Aperture install

    After I installed Aperture, my system slowed WAAAAY down. I'm talking as long as a minute to bring up a menu. I made sure that all import was finished, all previews made, and in fact at times the system works as before. But then, all of a sudden, something bogs the whole system down, on any software.
    How can I tell what is running in the background so I can remove it? Any other suggestions? I'm a Windows convert, so still have a lot to learn...
    John

    You can open up the Activity Monitor program from the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. It will give you a display of all running processes.
    How much hard drive space remains after your install and import? You can choose "Get Info" from the File menu if you highlight the icon of your hard drive. The window that opens will tell you the capacity, available and used space.
