Has anyone else encountered this problem? (Urgent)

Question

Flags flags = message.getFlags();
Flags.Flag[] sf = flags.getSystemFlags();
int numOfFlags = sf.length;
numOfFlags (sf.length) is always 0. My protocol is IMAP, my MTA is sendmail my OS is RedHat Linux 8.0
I was under the impression that when you get a new mail one of the flags get set automatically. If not, how then do you know which mail is new, which one has been read, which one was replied ... etc?

Did you fetch the profiles?
          // Attributes & Flags for all messages ..
          Message[] msgs = folder.getMessages();
          // Use a suitable FetchProfile
          FetchProfile fp = new FetchProfile();
          fp.add(FetchProfile.Item.ENVELOPE);
          fp.add(FetchProfile.Item.FLAGS);
          fp.add("X-Mailer");
          folder.fetch(msgs, fp);
