Have DVI monitor - want to add VGA monitor - what adaptor am I needing?

Well, Ii am at my office - not at home where my PowerMac is and I am wondering what adaptor I need to purchase in order to connect a second monitor to my G5?
I am already using my DVI port for my 19" monitor.
Surprise! When I tried to use my DVI - VGA adaptor (reaching behind desk scenario) it wouldn't work and I quickly realized, "Hey! That's not a DVI port :-|"
What kind of port is it and where is the best place to get the adaptor?
Thanks guys

I don't think there are many companies making these, but there is no reason another brand shouldn't work. If you can't find an ADC to VGA adapter, you could buy an ADC to DVI adapter
<http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/2.RSLID?mco= E1A673E1&nplm=T2774G%2FA> to connect your DVI monitor to the ADC port, and use your DVI to VGA adapter to connect your VGA monitor to the DVI port. Don't try an ADC to DVI followed by a DVI to VGA to connect the VGA monitor to the ADC port. ADC to DVI adapters may not pass through the analog signals needed by a VGA display.

Here's the problem I am trying to research for you...
There does exist a way to add a second monitor via USB:
USB 2.0 to HDMI Audio Video 1080P Adapter for Windows and Macbook
It's the only device I know of that can do that.  The problem is that it wants a HDMI connection.  So that means a HDMI-to-VGA adapter or converter needs to be found (not VGA-to-HDMI, those are easier to find).
    Interesting article realted to this:
    Hdmi to vga adapter
Maybe somthing like this converter will work.

I have purchased a Kanex C247DL cable adaptor - thru amazon for about $90.00 -
this allows for me to connect to a Non Unibody MacBook pro 15" laptop to a Apple 27' LED Cinema monitor
I needed a Female minidisplay port to a Male DVI adapter.
This Kanex made adapter allowed for the monitor ( which is one long cable with 3 plugs - 1 for power, 1 USB male and the 1 male mini display port- only 3 usb female ports in the back of the monitor itself)
to plug its USB and the minidisplay port from the monitor and then plug directly into my macbook pro thru the older styled monitor ( female) plug on the right of the computer + plugging into a USB port (which I have on both sides of my unit) - problem solved - i guess i will find out when the adaptor arrives -

You can try using Screen Sharing in the Sharing preferences. Or try a third-party utility such as ScreenRecycler.

  • VGA/DVI cable - wanting to use two monitors.

I got a VGA/DVI cable to connect the VGA port on my LCD TV to the DVI port on my desktop computer. I'm trying to use 2 monitors on my computer which has both a VGA and DVI port. My regular monitor was already on, and the computer detected the TV as a monitor but the TV wouldn't detect a signal. I had the TV on the VGA/PC setting. The cable was a return item so it might be defective. I was wondering if there's anything else I could try to get it to work?

My computer's DVI port doesn't allow for the contacts above and below the flat blade like the DVI-I and DVI-A connectors in the picture. The cable that I got does have those contacts.
Ooooooh.  So your computer may be one of the rare animals that doesn't have a DVI-I output, only DVI-D.
Since your TV has HDMI inputs, this is the way to go.  Get a DVI-to-HDMI cable.  It will provide higher quality than VGA and is USUALLY easier to use, I've never had video timing/resolution support issues with HDMI.  (However, every computer I own has an Nvidia graphics card - the story may be different for ATI or Intel graphics!)

  • I want to utilize iCloud. What software do I need? I have OS X, I want to utilize iCloud. What software do I need? I have OS X

I have a MacBook running Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L30). I want to use and utilize iCloud. What software do I need to get inorder to do so?
    Thanks!

You need to install OS X Lion 10.7.2 to access iCloud on your mac.  First you would need to purchase a Snow Leopard retail disc ($29 USD), then run software update to get to 10.6.6 (10.6.8 preferred) to access the app store to download lion ($29 USD), or if you have a slow internet connection, you can purchase Lion on a USB drive for $69 USD.  Make sure your mac meets this minimum requirements in order to run each of these versions of OS X

First need would be a high speed Internet connection, such as Cable, DSL or Fibre service. Dial-up has nowhere near the capacity to provide Netflix service.

  • What adaptor do I need to connect from mini display port to a dvi monitor

I want to connect a 2nd monitor to my mac mini via the mini display port, will the Apple adator do this ok or will I need an active adaptor

I had trouble with different Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters, including a couple of Apple branded ones.
When I mentioned the problem to the Apple rep. at Fry's. He walked straight over to the rack, handed me a > Kanex Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D Adaper grined and said, I've never had one of these baby's come back.
After that my 2010 Mac Mini has been very stable running Dual 21.5" Samsung DVI monitors. One in on the Apple Supplied HDMI to DVI adapter, the other now on the Kanex Adapter has been rock solid for over a year.

  • Have Design Standard, want to add Flash.  Options?

Hi.  I am interested in working with Flash.  I was planning on adding it when upgrading to CS5, but for all I know that could be the fall, and I would prefer to get into it asap.
As far as I am able to tell I have three options -
    1) $799 Upgrade to Design Premium - is there any way to pick this up for the difference in package price?  I understand doubling the upgrade price encourages Premium sales up front, but, c'mon!  I have seen copies on eBay for slightly less, but not much.
    2) $699 Flash Standalone - Pointless, as an extra $100 also buys Dreamweaver and Fireworks.
    3) Buy Design Premium, Sell Design Standard - I have seen (apparently) legit copies of Design Premium on eBay for ~$750, and it seems as though copies of Design Standard sell for ~$500.  This is the least expensive option.  Is there any reason I couldn't sell our copy of Design Standard?  I imagine it can be 'deactivated' or maybe the license can be transferred?  I don't know, I haven't dealt with this before.
Is there is anything I am overlooking?  Any options I am unaware of?  What would you do?  Any help is most appreciated, thanks!

I have the same issue and haven't found any real shortcuts regarding pricing. However, in my case, I'm willing to wait for CS5, be it April or October, or whatever, and upgrade at that time.
Your third option may have some difficulties. If you upgrade to Premium I don't believe you can go out and sell your Standard edition, legally. Licenses usually are transferred during an upgrade - you don't pick up an "extra" license when upgrading. That's my laymen's understanding.

  • On Mac  Have 2.1 want to add 2.3 - Best Way?

    All,
I think I know the answer but wanted to double check. If I just do the update, I think the process will take my 2.1 installation and turn it to a 2.3 installation. If I rename Lightroom 2 to something else, 2.3 should be able to be co-resident, correct? I just don't want to lose 2.1 quite yet. Thanks in advance.
    Jay S.

    Tom,
OR... :-) I may just wait a couple of days and see how 2.3 fleshes out. Seemed like there were too many issues with 2.2 and 2.1 is working great for me. Thanks again for replying.

  • I have 2 licences for photoshop elements 12 and I want to add another. What is price and how do I do that

how do I obtain an additional license for photoshop elements 12

    Hi Jeremy,
It sounds like just joining Creative Cloud with a different email address/Adobe Id for the full membership would be what you should do rather than upgrading.

I have a new computer , want to install CS5 and deactivate from old. Problem is my CS5 is an upgrade and needs a older version of Elements which I no longer have. Any suggestions?

you don't need the previous version that was upgraded.  you just need the serial number of the previous version.
but, if you want the previous version:

  • Have old G4 want to upgrade but unsure what are limitations

    hi,
    i bought an old powerPC G4 533MHZ (CPU 11.3)
    (only has 768 sdram currently)
videocard is nVidea 32MB AGP card.
was hoping to be able to upgrade this machine a lot and do quality video work on it. A friend of mine claims that it has terrible limitations and that even if i were to swap out the hard drive or try to make it a dual core, it wouldn't work. Bus speed is supposed to be cost prohibitive as well
how much of this is true? how much could i pimp this machine out?
thank you for any help you may be able to provide

Well, my 2003 MDD machine has yet to really overheat. In fact, it never did! It all started back in 2007 around the summer time. My machine at that time was a 733mhz digital audio G4 and I was looking at a more advanced G4 system. Originally, I had my sights on the lowest of the totumpole G5, but unable to afford it at that time.
So, I looked on craigslist under G4's and low and behold. I found this G4 MDD for $435! It has a dual 1.25 processor with 2MB L3 Cache per processor and large hard drive space.. a lot more than the digital audio has.
I jumped at the deal. The good news is that I have the modified power supply inside and my machine is quiet under OS X, though under OS 9.2.2, it can be a little noisy, but not too bad.
I use my machine for everyday tasks and have no need for windows applications, at least for now. I do plan on getting a intel mac mini, since I would never depart away from my beloved MDD!
Anyway, the processor upgrades for MDD machines are dual 1.6 and dual 1.8, but both these from Sonnet lack L3 Cache, which is why I am not going to get any of those because its not cost effective. I plan on getting sata hard drives to complete my upgrades for this machine. Already got a GEFORCE 7800 GS video card with 256MB memory + core image capability. I plan on getting Leopard, though right now I am satisfied with Tiger as all my software runs under Tiger better than Leopard.
My machine has never had any issues with reliability. Its a strong BEAST. The Digital Audio G4 has been passed down to my 9 year old so that he can learn on the computer. That processor is not bad either for basics, and what he is doing in grade school is basics.
I also have a sawtooth mac, though was going to use this as a server using Mac OS X Server 1.2v3.
