Have One ITunes Library but 3 devices i want to sync, can it be done?

Hi Everyone
I have a large MAC 27" computer and it is synced with my iphone. I also have an itouch and a nano. We have made purchases on the computer, the iphone and the touch.
1. Can they all work off the same library?
2. If you buy a song on the touch, can it be transferred to the main library and be used by our other devices?
3. I have authorised each device but the main one is the iphone to the main library. Everytime i attach the nano or the touch it wants to wipe out all the songs on the device and link to the main library. Is there anyway to merge all the data and then sync between the 3 devices of the main library?
Thanks in advance
Troy

yes. there is no limit as to how many devices can be synced with the same iTunes.
2. If you buy a song on the touch, can it be transferred to the main library and be used by our other devices?
yes. to transfer purchases made on a mobile device, connect your device and right-click or control-click your iPod in the iTunes Source list, then choose +transfer purchases+ from the shortcut menu that appears.

when you say *main library*, does that mean you have other libraries ? can you elaborate on your setup, please ?
in order to prevent a sync from happening when a device is connected, go iTunes > preferences > devices and check +prevent iPods ... from syncing automatically+.
you might also want to set your devices to _*manage content manually*_

  • Can users have one iTunes library deriving from two drives?

    Hi everyone,
I keep my 4 & 5 star songs on my C drive and the rest (all stars, 1,2 3, etc.) on my exhternal hard drive.
Whenever I want to listen to my music, all I can readily play are the tunes on my C drive.
I'm guessing the issues having one library for tunes stored on separate drives is insurmountable?
I say that because I'm guessing that my iPod (4th gen) is only capable of importing from one library?
I think the biggest issue is either I don't know how to (or maybe users can't) list a second drive so that iTunes can load all songs from both drives whenever I do have the second drive up and running.
Adding to the second drive library issue, I can't figure out how to permanently tag my external HD's (I've got 6) so that their drive letter is not automatically defaulting to their order of prescence.
I can deal with that issue by simply not opening iTunes while I the second drive has been assigned a drive letter other than what iTunes (hopefully) is set to (i.e.; hopefully C and F drives).
But can users have one iTunes library deriving from two drives?

Seems I've over come what is something I'd hoped/expected iTunes would be capable of (ie; reinitiating the pathway for external HD music files when their drive letter is the only thing that changed).
I tried the obvious by going to iTunes's Edit>Preferences>Advanced and clicking the change button for "iTunes Music folder location", then entered the current drive and pathway (as the drive is currently assigned, F as opposed to the original G) and of course iTunes still couldn;t find the missing tunes.
Giving up on the hope that iTunes was designed smarter than it is (ie; each and every single missing tune req's manual redirection of pathway, as opposed to a preferable tick box for something like 'use the last redirected pathway').
And I finally figured out how to properly changed drive letter assignments, but still uncertasin if that means permanently tags my EHD's with that drive letter.
For that to be permanent, maybe I need to name each drive regardless that Windows already has unique inforamtion on each HD. Suppose I'll soon find out if the drive at this point has fianlly stored its drive name and whether or not Windows will contiue to change the EHD drive letters simply by the order which I am introducing them to the os.
No real luck with rats nest USB hubs as they crash my os alot, so I'm left to trying to find an easy way of managing the EHD drive assignments. THe following is the closest I've yet to come to doing that:
Click Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management, and then in the left pane, under Storage, click Disk Management.
Right-click the drive, partition, logical drive, or volume for which you want to assign a drive letter, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
    Click Change.
Click Assign the following drive letter (if it is not already selected), click the drive letter that you want to use, and then click OK.
Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the drive letter change.
Again, too bad iTunes doesn't afford a 'find' feature for 'missing' files such that one might be afforded a tick box for 'do not prompt again, instead use the last indicated location for "iTunes Music" folder as the base storage location'.
This drive renaming thing is a real hassle. Not like somebody couldn't have guessed it and Windows and/or iTunes can't afford some script, etc. to better manage 'tagging' EHD's and/or re-locating 'missing' tunes.
But then what would we have to complain about, not that they listen anyway.

All devices under the same Apple ID will have one iCloud. If they are over 13, they can create their own Apple IDs, or you can just turn everything off under Settings > iCloud on the iPods.

    You can't do that.
And before you decide to store any music that you own on a computer at work, talk to your IT department. Many organizations do not permit it for legal reasons. Standard policies are that anything stored on company owned computers is the property of the company. It could not be legally stored on their machines unless you transfer the licenses and all copies, physical and digital, to the company, meaning you no longer own the music. If they were to be audited and could not prove that they own the music, they would be subject to copyright violation penalties. Just use your iPod when you're at the office if you want to listen to music.

Was your iPod associated with a different mac or pc previously is all. And was it backed up or sync'd on this mac with iTunes previously.

You can't. Contact the iTunes Store and plead for mercy and see if they will let you download them again:

  • We have three Ipads in our house.  We have one itunes account with multiple devices like two Iphones and Apple TV.   My question is about our three Ipads.   How can I set up the imessaging and facetime on all three devices while only using one Itunes acct

Okay.  We have three Ipads in our house with only one Itunes account.   When I go into imessaging and facetime on each of the devices, it wants to start switching my wife's cell phone and then the three emails associated with each Ipad to the contact information for all of the Ipads.    As of this morning, only the imessaging and facetime are turned on my wife's iphone and ipad.   My kids imessaging and facetime is turned off.     Do you really have to have an itunes account for each device to make then work???    Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Ryan

There is only one solution. Each user must have their own separate user account. All of their respective data would be contained in their separate user accounts. This also means each will have a separate iTunes Library. If you all use the same third-party apps, then each will have to purchase their own copies under their own Apple IDs. Some data sharing is possible. See:

  • How to I have one iTunes library that enables me to keep my music on my laptop, and my podcasts and audio books on a separately mapped hard drive?

I'd like to enjoy ONE iTunes library on my laptop, which isn't big enough to store all my content, so I'd like my single iTunes library to have a LOCAL drive portion for my music, and then - when I'm at home, have my iTunes library be able to ALSO include a large library of podcasts & audio books.
I currently have TWO iTunes libraries - a big one on a big drive at home, and a not-so-big on on my laptop.   This is, of course, a nightmare, because I have to resynch my iPod to use one or the other.
Ideally, I'd like to transfer content from my home PC iTunes OR my laptop iTunes - to my iPod and iPhone.     But I can only use one or the other library.     So, I guess the next best thing is - how to do this? - have an iTunes library on my laptop and then, when I have access to my home network, be able to see additional iTunes content - books and podcasts.    I need this in order to transfer books etc. to my iPod/iPhone, as well as music.
Any suggestions?      In this regard - Windows is way the heck easier to manage than iTunes.
    thanks
    Jim

Use your computer's backup to transfer your iTunes library from your old computer to your new computer per the instructions included with this link, or do the same with both computers networked in some fashion, which shouldn't be hard to do if both computers are connected to the same wireless network.

  • Can I have one itunes account, but have two devices that used different email accounts?

I have an iPad2 and want to buy an iPod Touch for my daughter.  I want it to use her email address, but use my itunes account.  Can that be done?

The Apple/iTunes ID (which is a email address) is seperate from any mail accounts yu have on the iPod/iPad.  Both devices can use the same Apple/iTunes ID but have different email address for the mail accounts on the devices.

You should create a new compuer login account for him (System prefs > Users & Accounts) and he will have all his own data including his own iTunes library.
Also, you can have more than one device in iTunes and sync different content.

  • I have downloaded a film that appears in my iTunes library, but it won't play.  What can I do?

I have downloaded a film into my iTunes library which appears but it won't play.  Essentially, when I click to start the film I just get a black movie screen with the control console, but no film.  What can I do as I don't want to delete it and download it again at additional cost?
    Thanks in advance.

I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the item, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.

  • Anyone have an iTunes Library/Media on a NAS and no longer can access it on Lion?

My Buffalo Linkstation is accessable through finder just fine. I can see all fies and have the correct permissions.
In iTunes, when i try to use the Option+Click to open iTunes and point it to my NAS library, it does not connect with the permissions to access the library! I am connecting as the NAS admin, not guest. It really looks like an iTunes issue, I am baffled becuse as I say, through the finder all is well.
Thanks all. I did the hack BTW.....

I've the latest Fw for my Linkstation. The issue ia weid, as I can access the files THROUGH the finder no problem.
I have my standard iTunes library on my internal hd. The NAS is used for archiving all my CDs. Eventually it wil be used in a Sonos system for high quality streaming. When I am archiving, I Option+Click on iTunes and select the external library. Otherwise, I use the internal library (lossy) for all my other iTunes needs.

    Here is my question:

we want to put it on an ext hd and have access to it whenever we want with any of the computers
but we also want to continue to read and/or import some music on both computers (mostly the laptop) with or without the ext hd mounted
what is the easiest way to do it?
I am not an expert and also I am French so do not understand all your englishor american terms
thanks for any help or clues

  • I have one itunes account but I use it on a windows and on a mac.  If I buy a song on one, does it go to the other?

Years ago, I bought an iPod Nano and I sync it with iTunes on my windows computer.  I have many songs on my windows iTunes account.  For work I received a MacBook Pro and an iPhone.  I sync my phone to the mac still using that same iTunes account.  There are some songs that I might want to put on both my nano and my phone.  Will I have to buy that song two times?  One for each computer?

Thank you for your help.  My follow up question would be then, is there a way to keep them separate but linked?  In other words, I don't mind continuing to sync my nano to my windows computer and syncing my phone to my mac, but I don't want to pay for the same song twice.  How do I get a song that I purchase on one platform to be on the other platform?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • We are a family of 6 - 2 parents and 4 children.. We have an iMac, 3 macbooks, a Macbook Pro and an iPad. We all want to be able to share the itunes library, but it keeps telling us that it can't authorize more than 5 computers.  What can we do???

How can we home share with more than 5 computers?? We are a family of 6 and each has his/her own computer.

You can't. But iDevices don't count. So you should be able to share the 5 computers.
