Have to reinstall Tiger every 14 days

Hello all,
I have noticed that the last four months, I have had to reinstall Tiger every 14 days on my PowerBook, on the dot. I have had multiple problems that have caused me to reinstall, such as apps not launching, apps crashing, and kernel panics. Does anyone have any suggestions? I believe that a hardware failure may be imminent, but I don't know which component is failing, so I cannot replace it. Here are my kernel panics: http://pastebin.ca/582463
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for everyone's prompt replies. I tried running TechTool Deluxe last night, and it quit halfway through the process, while testing the Hard Disk. I am not sure if this means there is also a problem with the hard disk (it quit during the surface scan), or if it quit because of faulty RAM. I keep an "emergency boot drive" on this machine, that seems to remain unaffected by this issue, but is running an earlier version of OS X.4 (It's running X.4.0, while my main partition runs the latest). The issue will go away for about 14 days, then the issues will return forcing me to do a complete reinstall on my main partition. My PowerBook is my only computer, so I need it to work 99% of the time, without having to reinstall software every 14 days.
I do not have any official training in repairing Apple notebooks, or Apple desktops, but I have repaired more than my fair share of Macs and PCs, including this PowerBook (I replaced the optical drive and hard disk in this machine).
Also, is there any way of getting MemTest for free? I would prefer to not have to pay for an app I'll only use once or twice...
Also, does anyone have any suggestions of where I can get quality RAM for this machine? The RAM upgrade I purchased about 2 years back has obviously failed, so I won't be buying any more of that brand of RAM. I am looking at replacing that 512 MB stick with a 1 GB stick.
I should also mention that Activity Monitor sees the RAM size as constantly changing (for example, it will be at 768 MB for a while, then it will go down to 767.9, then back up to 768, and continue changing like that). Is this a symptom of bad RAM?
Again, thanks for everyone's time and assistance.
-Chris

Ever since I received my Macbook Pro in July 2011 I've had issues with my wireless connection at home.  After software updates, Apple support suggested I reboot my router which works.  But now I have to do it every other day.  ????  AT&T my DSL carrier suggests I get a new router.  Apparently the one I have is really old and doesn't support my Macbook Pro.  Does this sound right?

If your using WEP encryption yes, Apple has discontinued that becaues it's worthless. WEP (and WPA) is cracked so encryption makes no sense.
Get a new Wireless N router, set it up with WPA2 (AES) Personal and two different 20+ randon letter/numbersymbol character passwords
One for Admin access only of the router, keep this on paper off all comptuers in a safe someplace.
One for entering into devices, computers etc for Internet Access Only.
You need the long and random password to defeat brute force attacks by GPU software that the hackers have now.
Also if you give out the password to another, they can't hack the network with the guest access password.
Computers remember the internet password, so anyone with access to your machines or network will have the password.
Since you have another Admin only password, they can't hack in. got it?
You don't need "Invisible" or "MAC Address filtering" that's a waste of time as hackers can sniff a network and causes issues getting on the network.
    Good luck.

  • Why do I have to clear cookies every 3 days because YOUR Firefox is screwed? Do I need to go back to Explorer again?

I'll try to open a news page and get an error message
    Sorry, Bad Request.
Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.

According to your forum, I need to clear cookies. It works, but I then have to reload passwords and settings, and repeat the whole thing 3 days later? if Firefox isn't going to fix the problem, just tell me and I'll stop using it completely.

You may have security or cleanup software that messes with files in the Firefox Profile Folder is the cookies get corrupted.

  • I have to reinstall iTunes every time I connect my iPod

This has never happened to me before, but now my iTunes won't recognize my iPod Touch 2nd gen. I'm currently using Windows 7 64-bit. When I check the connected devices, "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" shows up under "Unspecified". I used the Apple-provided troubleshooter and checked if the driver is installed, which it is. All the appropriate services are set to start at my computer's boot and all are running. The last solution was to completely re-install iTunes, which I've done, and my iPod shows up in iTunes. The bad part, after I reboot my computer, the problem returns. It'll be a hassle to keep my computer on all the way and to reinstall every time I boot my computer. Any suggestions?

  • Why in God's name does reader have to be updated every other day?

How long have you been writing this software for windows? Come on, it not like its a video game or even an OS (which is update only slightly more often than reader)?
And why does Adobe need to dig its claws into my OS so deeply. Just read a pdf and show it to me. No other functions are required or asked for. If this keeps up I'l need to move to FoxIt or some other compatible and lightweight reader that just reads pdfs and leaves out the insidious, in your registry with both feet, constant services running software to someone else.

    OS XP
    AR 9.3.2
regardless of whether I allow updates to proceed or not, AR repeatedy daily alerted me to update. I have now uninstalled AR 9.3.2 and d/l and installed AR X. I no longer have an AR icon in my taskbar, but do have an ARX icon on my desktop. I would prefer to not have yet another icon on my desktop - as AR X is now listed in my programs folder, perhaps I can delete the icon on my desktop - please advise.
In addition whenever I want to open a PDF file, I am obliged to first open the reader then from the file drop-down menu open my desired PDF file. If I try to avoid this step and open a PDF file directly by clicking on the file , I get my microsoft picture manager which opens with an image of a PDF icon. From within this picture manager displaying a static image of a PDF icon, it is not possible to do anything. I simply close the picture manager and revert to opening the Adobe reader and going through the motion of the drop-down menu from file etc. This is an annoying multiple step process that would be desirable to avoid. Can you advise me on this point, please?

  • I use speeddial addon and it now keeps going off every time I close firefox and I need to reinstall it every time. What can I do to stop this happening? Thanks!

    My homepage now says
XML Parsing Error: no element found
    Location: chrome://speeddial/content/speeddial.xul
    Line Number 1, Column 1
    every time I open firefox.
I then have to reinstall speeddial every time I start up. This never used to happen before and I don't think I've changed any settings.

Been in touch with the author of the product and got the following reply:
The problem is the SiteAdvisor extension that McAfee installs; go to Tools > Add-ons, in the resulting panel select "Extensions", locate SiteAdvisor, click on it to select, and then click the "Disable" button; Speed Dial will work perfectly after that.
I already contacted them to attempt to fix the problem, but no reply so far. The problem happens before any Speed Dial code is executed, so I don't think I can fix it on my side.
Don't have the problem any more, note I had a McAfee update just before the problem started happening.

  • Reinstalling Tiger with an existing Windows partition

    Hi,
I have a MacBook with three partitions on the HD: one with Tiger on it, another NTFS-formatted with Windows, and a third FAT32-formatted with data on it. Unfortunately, I have to reinstall Tiger. Since bootcamp doesn't exist for Tiger anymore and I thus won't be able to reinstall Windows, I have to make sure the windows and the data partition are not touched. Also, I'm worried about the MBR; if the Tiger installer overwrites it, I'll have no way to boot into Windows, even if the installation is still valid. So, is there anything I have to pay attention to, is it even possible?
    Thanks.

Why reinstall Tiger? can't you just restore it from a backup clone?
Use your external drive to make an image of Windows, also, with WinClone, or invest in something for Windows to do clone/restore.
Seems like you had to have used something other than, or in addition to, BootCamp Assistant to begin with to have a three partition setup.
Last but not least, pick up Leo DVD 10.5.4.

Does anyone know how to set up an event to repeat "every other day" in iCal? I need to have an event repeat every second day, but can only see options for "every day" or "every week". Perhaps I'm missing something, or someone can suggest a clever way around this? Thanks & Cheers!

  • Reinstall Tiger

Hello, I have recently reinstalled tiger on my mac to get rid of a problem I was having with iTunes (it wasnt starting, everything else was fine) and when I reinstalled I figured it would just fix the system. But it used the actual 4 gigs on my hardrive, which seems stupid, before the reinstall I had 30 gigs left and after I had 25! How do I get ride of the old installation. Does this make any sense? I am a new mac user and I do say it has revolutionized my computer experience!
    ~Drewberry

    Hi Drewberry;
    Exactly what did you do?
If you did what I think you did an Archive & Install, then you should have a folder labelled "Previous System". Once you are satisfied that the system and applications are working correctly, you can delete the folder, "Previous System".

  • The new firefox twitter app is great - except it disappears every time I shut down the computer and I have to remove and then reinstall it every day!?? I am working on an iMac - if that is causing the problem ...? Thanks.

The new firefox twitter app (mini tab on left of page) is great - except it disappears every time I shut down the computer and I have to remove and then reinstall it every day!?? It won't appear on the page until I do. I am working on an iMac - if that is causing the problem ...? Thanks.

Eustace, thank you so much for writing back.  I will try what you suggested!!
thx for your reply - apparently when I went to the Apple store a long time ago, they restore maybe photos and itunes etc from my external hard drive (passport).  I guess at that time they reinstalled an earlier operating system than my macbook came with and that somehow corrupted FileVault.  apparently there was no sparse bundle (whatever that is) for my old admin account and they said that ever since the install of the older OS that it was actually NEVER backing up anything in my admin account.
Then, I bought Time Capsule and starting backing up to that instead.  I started having problems with it being slow etc and then StartUp Disk full errors and didn't know what to do, so I "Restored" from Time Capsule and that's when I lost everything in my Admin account and was locked out when I tried to log in - it said File Vault error ..."
anyway - that's THAT sad story.  I was told to create a new admin account and I've basically been trying to start over - even though I have a partial save of my computer in Crash Plan and I DO see a sparse bundle listed in there, but I just don't know enough about computers to know if it's something I can get back or if I am just totally doomed.
I'm afraid to reinstall anything because if there is even a remote shot that the other files are still floating around in my computer, I feel like that chance will be shot forever.  I need to hire McGee from NCIS, I just KNOW he could get those files back for me!!!

  • Have to reinstall Flash after every reboot.

Windows 7 - IE9 - Flash version 11.0.1.152 - Plugins and OS up to date - ESET Smart Securty 4
I get prompted to install new version of Flash after a reboot, so it happens at least once a day.
I install Flash and it installs just fine and works until the PC boots up again.
I tried some of the following:
    - Use Adobe Flash Uninstall program before installing
    - Using standalone install program
    - Checked ActiveX Filter and it was off...turning it on causes
this same behavior, but the problem I have has nothing to do with the filter
Not sure when this started, but the user didn't have this problem until recently.
I am using ESET Smart Security 4. On all our systems, and his PC is the only
one that is having a problem. Need some pretty hard evidence before I bother
with uninstalling ESET just to see if that would help.
The part that is really strange...if I go to manage add-on's while it is working,
I see the Flash player there and Adobe's name there and that it is enabled.
After I reboot and go into the add-on manager, Flash is still there and still
enabled, but it now says "Unknown" instead of "Adobe" and is no longer
listed near the other Adobe programs. But then, when I reinstall it, that gets
"fixed" and now says Adobe again. So it almost seems like an IE9 problem
and possibly a corruption problem. No known problems with the PC. I suppose
that reloading the PC from scratch would fix the problem...at least I hope it would,
but I'm also not ready to do major surgery if there is an easier fix.

    sorry no hablo ingless

I also downloaded that Nirsoft tool, and on my (64-bit) system I also only see the ocx and exe registered.  But everything works well on my system. So I currently have no other ideas.  Hopefully someone from the Adobe team will have a look at this topic.

  • Need to Reinstall iTunes every day

I buy a lot of TV episodes on iTunes. However, every time I try to play one, if it's the first time I've played an episode that day (I shut down at night), the video screen pauses for a moment, turns green, and then displays an error stating that the application needs to close. I need to completely uninstall, and reinstall iTunes to get it to work. But then I turn off my computer for the night, and the next day it's the same thing. Needless to say, I'm getting tired of it.
I have re-downloaded the installer, and I have disabled anti-virus software, neither of which did any good. No other programs have any problems whatsoever, so it's not hardware related.
Has anyone encountered a problem like this in the past? Does anyone know what could be causing it?
I'm using Windows Vista x64. (I've tried both the 32- and 64-bit versions of iTunes.)

I never had problems with iTunes before installing the Windows Explorer 8.
Afterwards, several problems have appeared, and as far as iTunes is concerned I need to reinstall iTunes every times my computer is newly booted up.
I think Explorer 8 is the culpritt.
Did anyone solve this problem ?

  • Adobe CC trial expiring every 30 days even thought I have an active subscritption

So I have my main PC which is Windows and all is good but I also use my subscription on 2nd computer which is Mac OSX Yosemite. I believe this is all ok under the license agreement to do this? However every 30 days my Adobe license expires and says the grace period has ended and then I remove all the apps and reinstall and again the count down for 30 days starts. This annoying to do every month as it always happens as I urgently need it. I tried searching and found some similar issues other users have had but nothing identical. Just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction as I am not as familiar with troubleshooting mac issues as I am with Windows.
