Heading Numbers messed up in a chapter

Heading numbers are messed up in chapter 1 of my book file. Is there a way to fix this problem?
1.1.3  Heading1 text here
1.1.3.1  Heading1 text here
1.1.3.2  Heading1 text here
1.1.3.3  Heading2 text here
1.1.4  Heading1 text here
....then the next heading begins at
3.1 Heading txt
3.1.1 Heading...
3.1.2 Heading...
The Autonumber Format is
<n>.<n+> (H1)
<n>.<n>.<n+> (H2)
<n>.<n>.<n>.<n+> (H3)

It's probably because you have all of your numbering in the same series, i.e. no series label is used.
FM's autonumbering can use a series label so that the numbering streams behave independently. The series label consists of a single character (upper and lower case are separate) followed by a colon, e.g. H: (see the example in the reply by Niels).
For headings, you can use the H: or h: label. Some users also use F: for figures and T: for tables, but it's up to you to define your preferred scheme.
The paragraphs that use the <a=...> numbering should be in a separate series from the headings, i.e. A:<a=1>\t and A:<a+>\t

  • Heading numbering with Pages 5

    Hi,
I am trying to add heading numbering in Pages 5 (5.0.1) with no success. Basically every time I update a style, style details are updated while numbering is not. Are there other people out there with the same issue? Any clue/help will be appreciated :-)
    Many thanks,
    Fabrice.

Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5.

Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Archive/trash Pages 5, after Exporting your files to Pages '09, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • Nested Heading Numbers in Pages

I want to work on a book in Pages.  It will have chapters, with sections, subsections, and maybe even sub-sub sections.
I want the numbers on the sections to be nested, so there will be chapter 1, with sections 1.1, 1.2, etc.  In section 1.1, there may be subsections 1.1.1, 1.1.2, etc.
Can anyone give me help on how to set this up in Pages?
For reference, I have Pages 5.2 (1860).  I am running it on a MacBook with OSX 10.9.2.
    Thanks

    Peter,
First, I don't believe that this is the place to argue about this.  However, since you seem to be insisting, I will to a point.
You're quite insulting particularly when you start out by asking if I actually looked.  You're also accusing me of several things that you are assuming (unless you have some sort of super power that no one on earth I know has).
My question to you now is:  Did you actually look at what I wrote?
I didn't say anything about what Pages hasn't got.  You said that.
What I actually said (and you can refer to my first post) was: "The Pages documentation doesn't mention anything about this particular issue or I haven't found it yet."
Furthermore, if I had assumed that it did not exist, I probably would not have asked the question "Does anyone know how to assign a custom number to a page in Pages '09?"  There would be no need since it does not exist.
It seems to me that you are guilty of the very things you are accusing me of.
Additionally, it was a simple question.  It seems as though you are overreacting.  If you are that upset about answering simple questions that you feel you have to insult the people whom you give an answer to, why bother answering at all?
I do, however, appreciate your attempt to answer.  It's the condescension that I can live without.

  • Graphic in Header-Numbers

I have a company graphic that I cannot get in the header? It is located in my iPhoto. When I pull it in to the document it only stays in the document, not the header. It won't go above the top line of the document column.

As a new Numbers user (previously used MS Word and NeoOffice) I am finding Numbers to have some major flaws.
A reminder that this is a user-to-user forum. Apple does not regularly monitor the discussion forums, so while discussions of 'major flaws' like those below may provide the satisfaction of user venting, they won't have much effect on development of the application.
If there's a feature you think is essential (or even just desirable) the place to communicate that to Apple and the Numbers developers is through the Provide Numbers Feedback item in the Numbers menu.
The ability to put a graphic (company logo) in the header is an essential feature. Any small business like ours wants to be able to easily create and print/pdf tables which have the company logo in the header.
Interoperability with Pages is also not as good as it needs to be. I thought an alternative would be to create my table then paste it into a Pages document with the header and footer setup properly. But there are only two paste options, eg. none of the paste as image/bitmap type options Word users would be familiar with).
Pages is not Word, nor is it a Word clone. If you think this feature is needed, Provide Pages Feedback.
The default paste option seems to paste it in as a full Numbers table. This is no use if you have done anything slightly fancy in the Numbers table, eg. in my case I had hidden two columns and the column I want to leave displayed has numbers calculated from the hidden columns. When you copy the table to Pages, the column with numbers displays all errors (red triangle) - it says the references (presumably in the formulas) are invalid.
The Paste and Match Style option converts the table into text and so is completely useless as it loses the table structure in addition to all the formatting. And it doesn't even put tabs in so you can't simply do a convert text to table in Pages.
Print the Numbers table as a PDF document. Open in Preview. Save as jpeg. Copy. Paste into Pages.
If Screen resolution is all that's necessary, take a screen shot of the table using Grab or shift-control-command-4, and use that.
All in all, after several hours of frustration I will have to give up (I really wanted to use Numbers and Pages) and go back to NeoOffice.
No argument there. Sometimes the old, familiar tools are the most productive. While I've moved some things to the iWork applications, I still use AppleWorks for others.
I am interested, though, in how you managed to get a graphic into the header of a NeoOffice spreadsheet. When I tried that tonight I was able to paste a graphic onto the spreadsheet itself, but when the Edit Headers dialogue was open all menus except the Apple menu and the Application menu disappeared. I could use the keyboard to paste text, but not to paste a graphic image into any of the header areas. How's it done?

  • Outline & Header/Numbering

I'm trying to write an outline for a research paper. The header has to have my last name with the page number on it, but the number has to be "ii". I'm not sure how to do that. I also was wondering if there is any auto-outline formatting. Thanks!

    mm,
Right click (or control-click) on an inserted page number and select the numbering type you want.

  • RH 9, MS Word, Heading styles messing up my mini TOC

I must be doing something wrong. :-)
I have done many Word to RH projects. All the same look and feel. I include a mini TOC at the top of my topics, (which are actually book chapters). Now, however, my mini TOCs have no contents in them, and the reason is that my headings are not called "Heading 1, Heading 2" etc, which is what RH requires for mini TOCs. My heading styles came in as "WD_Heading1, WD_Heading2" etc.
I do not know why they came in like that. I imported the Word files as I always do. I tried renaming the headings styles, but no go.
What up wit this? Please advise. Thanks!

Yes, I was doing something wrong.
During import of the MSWord doc, I forgot to make sure each Word Document paragraph style was mapped to a RoboHelp Style in the drop-down list. A simple step.
You know, I don't remember having to do this before. I believe the Robohelp style (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.) was selected by default. Perhaps because I was using a previous proejct as a template.
Well I am happy to answer my own question for anyone else who runs into this problem. It is not too gratifying, however, as it feels like scoring a goal on your own goalie.

  • Why does figure numbering re-start in each of my chapters?

For some reason, figure numbering just stopped spanning chapters in my book.
That is, the first figure in each chapter is labeled Figure 1. All chapters use same
paragraph definitions for "Figure Caption," and that paragraph definition includes
autonumbering. And when I generate an LOF file for the book, FM has no trouble
    finding them.
This is a recent development because all the figures in the book used to be
numbered correctly. I just can't figure out what changed.
My figures are built this way: start with an anchored frame,  Import>File , then
below the imported graphic frane itself, I insert a text frame and put the figure
    caption in it.
I have never fiddled with any text flows in the book -- I just use whatever
    defaultes FM gave me
As I said, this scheme used to work. Is there any way to explicitly
tell FM to use continuous numbering?
    Cheers,
    JP

    Error,
I still can't get figure numbers to continue but I did determine the following behavior.
If I set numbering of a chapter via the book file to this:
    Chapter: Continue numbering
    Page: Continue numbering
    Paragraph:Continue numbering
and then update the book file with Edit -> Update References, then heading numbering continues from the previous chapter (for example, chapter 3 starts with heading 3.6) but figure numbering restarts at 1.
If I reset numbering of a chapter via the book file like this:
    Chapter: Continue numbering
    Page: Continue numbering
    Paragraph:Restart numbering
the heading numbers immediately revert to 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 and the figure numbers remain at 1, 2, 3.
This is too frustrating. I can't spend any more time trying to figure this out so I'm going to switch to a <$chapnum>-<n+> format for figure numbers (and probably for tables too). I used to use that format at another company. At least it gives the user a clue as to what chapter the figure is in.
    Thanks for the suggestions.
    Yours,
    Michael F

  • Indesign CC: Chapter Numbering Not Updating

    I read this...
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5536663
And determined that I mightbe experiencing a similar problem. I have two different master pages.
Master A -  Chapter Pages - I use this for chapter title pages where the margins are slightly different. This is also where the chapter number is disaplyed.
Master B - Body Pages - This is where I have the body copy of my chapters. e.g H2 trough H6, Basic Paragraph, Lists, figure references, etc.
All my chapters are built this way. Including my appendicies.
Heres my book page numbering options...
Every chapter is displaying as "1 Chapter Title Goes Here"
The above chapter is infact Chapter 2 Deployment.
Heres the Chapter Number Style, or Heading - Chapter Title (H1)
You'll see I've assigned a specifc list for the numbers to use. It's titled "Chapters" under lists.
    My question is...
Is this happening becase I'm using two different text frames in my masters? You can see what my .indd page structure looks like in the pages screen shot.
My figure references aren't taking the chapter number, I assume because the chapter numbers aren't updating. Is this true?
How can I fix this without having to redo the Master-A pages or using a single master layout?
Any help is ALWAYS appreciated, and thanks for your time.
Heres an idea of my book structure.

So I took a look at the text frames, they're all linked properly. See screen cap.
This is what Chapter 2 looks like...
The text is not located on the master pages. It is however placed inside of the text frame which the master pages host. i.e The master pages have their margins and textfields. When I create a new page, it includes a text field. The screen caps above show Master-A and Master-B threaded together.
As for the page numbering... They're generated using lists and automatic numbering via paragraph styles...
See the screen caps in my first post.
And heres the chapter title line selected. Note the number is not selected.
So... I just checked the Page Numbering Options...
    And found this....
Ummm.... *face desk* Looks like I had document chapter numbering set to start at Chapter Number: 1.
I'll update and see if that helps.

  • How to add chapter numbers as well as page numbers?

Hi. I have a large text document with numbered pages. But I can't figure out how to keep those numbers sequential and add running chapter numbers (automatically) at the same time. Right now, I have to number the chapters manually. (At over 70 chapters, it becomes quite inconvenient to have to renumber them when adding or subtracting content.) Help!?
    e

Pages does not have an auto-chapter numbering system.
Your manual solution is it until Apple gives us something better.
Pages may not be the best solution for you if this is important.

  • CS3 work flow/Word import/Chapter numbering

We routinely produce 200+page documents using MS Word - the format is fairly basic, but each chapter is numbered (e.g., 1. Project Description) and within each chapter, there are usually numbered subheads with descriptive paragraphs (e.g., 1.1 Study Overview, 1.2 Study Characteristics, 1.3 Hazardous Materials). Those are incremented when the chapter increments...if you're in chapter 2, then the subheads become 2.1, 2.2, etc.
The Word document is always sent to me as a single, lengthy, multi-chapter doc. It is ALWAYS subject to change. Formatting it is far easier in InDesign CS3, and with the document-linking feature, if the Word document is changed, then updating is easily accomplished. However, my stumbling block appears to be in the Chapter numbering - InDesign only allows one Chapter number per document. I tried to use Section Numbering, but the Paragraph Style sheet does not allow that (among other things). I hesitate to use the Book feature - there would be a lot of hassle accommodating any and all Word doc changes our professional people make when they revise the content. If I have to use the Book feature, well, OK, but that might mean an even longer time to put these things together. Our people don't really care TOO much what it looks like (I do) as long as it is technically correct, so I have to make sure that it doesn't take longer to format this thing than the way we do it now.
Can someone point me to a white paper or solid tutorial on how this might be accomplished? If there is a good published book on it, please let me know! Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

    > Formatting it is far easier in InDesign CS3, and with the document-linking feature, if the Word document is changed, then updating is easily accomplished.
I think this would be the major stumbling block. If you turn on the preference (normally off) to "Create Links when Placing Text Files," then when someone updates the Word file and you in ID update the link to it, all your ID editing and text formatting (including application of your autonumbered paragraph styles) gets wiped out.
So ... don't do that. There are many ways to approach this workflow to smooth it out (save ID formatting for last, after breaking the link; or have Word users apply same-named styles to their Word doc; or have them use InCopy instead of Word); but they may require changes that your colleagues won't accept as necessary (as you mentioned...)

  • How to set an image to be a chapter heading?

Hello folks. I am trying to work out how to set an anchored image - which I am using as a chapter heading - to be detected as a chapter heading when I generate a Table of Contents?

I don't think the images being anchored is an issue. Since the same principle would apply to non-anchored images.
I'm just anchoring the header images so they remain in place with the text as I am still editing the text of the document. But here is a screenie. As you can see, the titles "Package Contents" and "Guidelines" are both graphical elements.
What I want, is that when I generate my Table of Contents, the software will output the text ""Package Contents ... 3" and "Guidelines ... 3" instead of "[image] ... 3"
Thus why I wonder if I can in essence, mark or tag the images, then have the mark or tag displayed in the TOC.

  • Table and figure numbering in multi-chapter book

Using InDesign CC 2014 I am editing a book that consists of 23 chapters. Each chapters are added to the book separately. There are 5 levels of titles, level 1-4 is numbered (first level is the chapter title), the 5th is not.The numbering of the titles in chapters works very well, but I have problem with numbering of figures and tables.
The numbering of tables and figures should look like this: Table 1.1., 1.2., etc, Figure 1.1., 1.2., etc. The first number is always the chapter number, the second is the number of table/figure in order - within the chapter. I want the second number to re-start in each chapter. But if I select "continue from the previous number" (or something like this - I have Hungarian version, tried to translate to English), the numbering does not re-start with each new chapter, however gets the correct ^H number. If I select "start", all tables and figures will be ^H.1.
My question is: what should I do on one hand to be able to use (and sync) all formats (including tables' and figures' captions with numbers) in the whole book, in the same time making the figures' and tables' numbering having ^H followed by a number re-starts in each chapter? For this, the table and figure number should be which level on the list? What to do with "restart numbering at this level after" option?
I have searched the www from A to Z and back but could not find the answer. Please, help me! Oh, and please, write the how-to description step-by-step (maybe illustrated?), as I use Hungarian version, which makes applying the suggestions a bit difficult. Thank you, in advance, for your kind help!

Darn Framemaker and its use of phantom numbering placeholders.

  • Indesign page numbers left in chapter

    Hey
I want to let the reader know how many page numbers are left in a chapter on the current page.
For instance your in chapter 1 on page 10 of 50

The last page number variable returns the last page of the document, so if you have more than one chapter and you want to report the number of pages for each chapter you'd need to set up custom text variables for each chapter with the page count, and you'd have to manually update the text in those varaibles if the page count in a chapter changes.

  • "insert" "section" causes unwanted blank page for numbering

    I have a section/page numbering problem.
I want to start page numbering on the 5th page (Chapter One). But.. when I insert a Section Break between the end of the TOC and first Chapter (where I want re-numbering to start) it causes a blank page to be inserted after the TOC and before the section break...
How do I insert a section break between TOC and Heading that's set to "start new page" without getting blank page?

Thanks I've got your file and have fixed it. It had to do with the way you constructed it.
This is how to do what I did after I deleted your existing T.O.C.:
1 click at foot of Title page > Menu > Insert > Section Break
2 Type "Table of Contents" return > Menu > Insert > Table of Contents
    3 Menu > Insert > Section Break
If there is a return at the beginning of the Introduction page just delete it.
I also tidied up your layout a bit and have emailed it back.
