Table and figure numbering in multi-chapter book

Using InDesign CC 2014 I am editing a book that consists of 23 chapters. Each chapters are added to the book separately. There are 5 levels of titles, level 1-4 is numbered (first level is the chapter title), the 5th is not.The numbering of the titles in chapters works very well, but I have problem with numbering of figures and tables.
The numbering of tables and figures should look like this: Table 1.1., 1.2., etc, Figure 1.1., 1.2., etc. The first number is always the chapter number, the second is the number of table/figure in order - within the chapter. I want the second number to re-start in each chapter. But if I select "continue from the previous number" (or something like this - I have Hungarian version, tried to translate to English), the numbering does not re-start with each new chapter, however gets the correct ^H number. If I select "start", all tables and figures will be ^H.1.
My question is: what should I do on one hand to be able to use (and sync) all formats (including tables' and figures' captions with numbers) in the whole book, in the same time making the figures' and tables' numbering having ^H followed by a number re-starts in each chapter? For this, the table and figure number should be which level on the list? What to do with "restart numbering at this level after" option?
I have searched the www from A to Z and back but could not find the answer. Please, help me! Oh, and please, write the how-to description step-by-step (maybe illustrated?), as I use Hungarian version, which makes applying the suggestions a bit difficult. Thank you, in advance, for your kind help!

  • Separate table and figure numbering sequences

I need some pointers and guideance on how to setup autonumbering for tables and figures separately.  As it is, the number sequence advances upon usage by a table or a figure.  For example,  Table 1,  Figure 2,  Figure 3, Table 4.    What I need in that case is  Table 1, Figure 1, Figure 2, Table 2.

    Steve,
The easisest way is to use what's called a series indicator for you autonumber sequence. This consists of a single letter at the star of the autonumber. Typically, one could use F:<n+> for figures and T:<n+> for tables. FM will then number these streams differently. You can make things more complex in your setup (and much easier for the authors) using a numbering matrix where parent heading tags reset the lower level counters (which is what Peter was alluding to).

  • Automating Table and Figure Numbering

I have a large document with many figures and tables that get removed/added or just change locations throughout the document while being reviewed.  It is also required to have a sentence in the text referring to the table/figure.  My question: is there any way to make the table/figure numbers automated so I don't have to keep renumbering them and the corresponding text as they get moved around?
I have checked forums and reference books but haven't been able to find anything about this.  Has anyone else run into this problem?  If so how did you work it out?
    Thanks for the help!
    Melanie

    Hi Torben,
This looks exactly like what I need to do and sounds like it would work perfectly but I ran into a small problem...
Got stuck at the first instruction: "Open the Window-Type & Tables - Cross Reference"
Cross Reference doesn't appear in the Type & Tables window.  I'm wondering if this may be the difference between CS3 and CS4.  We are currently using CS3.  I checked the Visual Quick Start book that I have to see if it was just in a different location in the CS3 version but wasn't able to find it.
Do you know of a way to do this same thing in CS3?
Thanks so much for your quick response, you've been so helpful!

  • Table and Figure numbering

Is it possible in a single file document to have section related numbering for Tag=bles and FIgures?
I need to number a document with label such as the following:

The section numbering function appears to only work for multifile books

  • Table and Figure Autonumbering

I am currently using FrameMaker 8.0 and having a problem with the autonumbering of my tables and figures.
Is there a way to have these as seperate numbering but still referencing the Chapter number?
    E.g. CHAPTER 1
    Table 1.1
    Figure 1.1
    Figure 1.2
    Table 1.2
    CHAPTER 2
    Figure 2.1
    Table 2.1
    Figure 2.2
    Table 2.2
    Thanks in advanced!

    Skye,
If your chapters are separate files, then you should be using the
$chapnum variable and control that at the book level.
If all of your chapters are in a single file, then you have to define
your autonumber sequences to use the matrix method and have the
chapter number paratag reset the sub-ordinate paratag autonumbers.
This is explained in the "Using multiple counters in an autonumber
format" section of the Help file.
The first method is the easiest to use and maintain.

  • Cross-references (MS-Word to WebHelp) not showing up for Tables and Figures

I am converting an MS-Word 2010 document to WebHelp using RH9. Cross-references to numbered sections, appendixes, websites, etc. come out fine. Cross-references to tables and figures do not always appear. In some sections they are there, and in some they are not.
Would anyone be able to offer any insight into how I can get these table and figure cross-references to come out on a regular basis in the WebHelp version? Thank you.

UPDATE TO PREVIOUS MESSAGE: Cross-references to tables and figures NEVER appear in the RH version when coming from MS-Word.
Is there any way to have these cross-references appear? If not, it appears the only solution is to bookmark tables and figures individually and hyperlink to each of them.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • Adding Tags in PDF for Tables and Figures

Please let me know how to add tags for Table and Figure in the PDF and also about setting up attributes for that

You can add tags to a PDF Document. If the PDF is untagged you can use the advanced, accessabilty, add tags to the document. If the PDF is already tagged or after you have run the add tags you can use the "touch up reading order" menu and then make the item you want to be a table a table etc....

  • Is there a way to auto-renumber tables and figures in an InCopy document?

I am looking for a script or plugin to be able to auto-renumber figures and tables in large InDesign/InCopy documents. Say if I add a new figure in between figures 4 and 5 I would like all following figures to automatically renumber and all references to those figures in the text to also auto-renumber like in a Word document. Possible? We have over 100 authors that are concerned this can't work. Need help.

The link below is to a zip file containing: 2 PDF files which are excerpts from Help (one on autonumbering and the other on cross-referencing) and a CS6 InCopy file with sample paragraphs using autonumbering for multiple list levels, tables and figures. If you have a Lynda.com account, that's perfect for quickly learning more about cross-references and autonumbering. I created the sample file quickly so I hope I put all of the elements you were trying to see in the file. If not, let me know. I have never posted a link on a forum so again, let me know if there is a problem getting the file. Hope this helps.

  • PDF bookmarks not expanding for 2 chapters in my 9-chapter book. What should I look for?

In my unstructured book, page, table and figure numbering is all correct. All 89 figures number correctly. I can't get the PDF bookmarks for chapters 2 and 8 correct. Each of the chapters have a bookmark, but no expanded bookmarks. They should have several. My TOC may have a clue as to what is wrong: only the links for chapter 1 work. All of the other chapters in the TOC show a link is present, but nothing happens with a click.
I've used the same formatting throughout the book; e.g., paragraph tags, master pages, etc. I only have 2 master pages – first and right. First is used for the first page of each chapter. When I save to PDF these 2 chapters separately, the chapter title ends up at the end of the bookmark list instead of the top. I know something is off, but I don't know what to look for. Tags that I don't see? Very frustrating.
I'm relatively new to FM and don't understand the tags in the reference pages. I haven't intentionally created any formatting tags in the reference pages. I only use them for special characters and repeated graphics.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. What I want for Christmas – a decent user manual for FM! I'd take a class, but I'm retiring in April.

The title bookmarks for the chapters won't be out of order in the book, but you indicated that they are (at the end of the sub-levels) for chapters 2 and 8 when done separately. If the text frames holding these titles were created after the main flow text frames, that would explain why things are things are misbehaving.
To specify the expanded bookmark level, you need to explicitly type in the level value that you want [ignore the drop down list and "Default" setting].
From the Book file, regenerate the TOC before you test the links. If you get a "File not found" after this, in the TOC, then something is really messed up i nhe TOC file. I would rename it and create a new one for the book. You can then import your formatting from the older, renamed version.

  • Table/figure numbering

    Hello all,
I'm in the process of updating a document that we publish annually at my workplace using CS4.  I have figured out how to use paragraph styles so that tables and figures update themselves automatically, and also how to create a crossreference within the text that does the same.  However, I am stuck on a few points:
Our figure numbering can go: Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3-1, Figure 3-2, Figure 4, etc.  Or Table 1, Table 2a, Table 2b, Table 3...  Is there a conditional that can be inserted?  Can I create a style so that it does # - # when necessary, and just the number alone when appropriate?  I have a feeling that I have to pick one format or the other...
Our figure numbering starts at Figure 1, and after about 10 figures, the tables start at Table 1.  I cannot figure out how to get the figures and tables to number themselves separately.  My only choices were to have all tables labeled '1', or start where the figures left off (so the first one is labeled '11').  In addition, tables that span multiple pages have different table numbers (probably because they were created as separate tables, so I have to figure out how to join them).
    Thank you for any help.

Are you using Microsoft word?  Microsoft thinks the users are idiots. They put up a lot of pointless messages that annoy & worry users.  I have seen this message from Microsoft word.  It's annoying.
    As BDaqua points out...
When you copy information via edit > copy,  command + c, edit > cut, or command +x, you place the information on the clipboard. When you paste information, edit > paste or command + v, you copy information from the clipboard to your data file.
If you edit > cut or command + x and you do not paste the information and you quite Word, you could be loosing information.  Microsoft is very worried about this. When you quite Word, Microsoft checks if there is information on the clipboard & if so, Microsoft puts out this message.
You should be saving your work more than once a day. I'd save every 5 minutes.  command + s does a save.

  • Figure numbering AND paragraph numbering in the same document

    Hi everyone,
I have a document with both figure numbering and paragraph numbering. So let say I am in section 4, then the first paragraph would be "4.1. Introduction" and the first picture would be "Figure 4.1: Cool pics".
I created two different lists, one for the figure and another one for the text so that figure numbers and paragraph number don't conflict. However I cannot add the section number in the figure numbering since it's on the other list... I tried to have the figure numbering and paragraph numbering in the same list, but then the numbers conflict (e.g it gives 4.1 Introduction and Figure 4.2: Cool pics).
Can anyone help me, doing what I want (which is "4.1. Introduction" and "Figure 4.1: Cool pics")? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
ps: I am using Indesign CS5.5 on a pc

Thanks for your answer Jump_Over, but my project is already divided into chapters (themselves divided in sections) in a book.
I found a way around by having the figure numbering in the same list as the paragraph numbering, the twist : while I use level 1 to 4 in paragraph numbering, I use level 5 for figure numbering with a numbering definition like ^1.^#, so no more conflict between numbers.
    It's working fine so far...

  • Numbers' Functions and Formulas in Multiple Cells, Tables, and Sheets

    Hello,
I'm stuck with specifics that center around usage, and I get the funny feeling I'm overlooking a simple detail or two.
    If I may, here goes.
I'm working with a single spreadsheet that has several sheets within it, and each sheet has an identical table. Each table is used to record various data, and I use an additional table in a separate sheet to consolidate some of the information, so that I can track results, at a glimpse, by looking at averages, totals, etc.
Each data table is organized for consolidation by tracking wins, ties, or losses. It is important to know that each data table only records a single win, tie, or loss along with its other applicable data. And on the actual consolidation table I am trying to tally specific data fields by the use of Numbers' functions and formulas, yet I wish to keep these tallied results organized by the determining factor of whether or not they were gathered from a table that recorded a win, a table that recorded a tie, or a table with a loss.
To illustrate, each table contains data fields that record start time, finish time, elapsed time, the day of the week, etc. Let's say I have eight tables, and the first two are winning tables, three more are tables that record a tie, and the last three are losing tables. For example, on my consolidated data table I wish to enter a function and formula capturing which of the eight tables are wins, ties, and losses so that I can, at a glance, see how much time elapsed to obtain the wins, ties, and losses. So then, in this example, for wins I want to determine which of those wins took 20 minutes, or which of them took 15 minutes, etc. So then, out of the two wins, let's say both of them took 20 minutes each. I need the numeral 2 to be counted and recorded on the consolidation table since only two tables match the criteria. And I would do the same for all remaining data fields (e.g., start time, finish time, etc.). Just so long as everything is determined by wins, ties, and losses, and then organized by the respective data fields. Simply put, this example determines a total of two wins that meet the data field requirement of 20 minutes. Out of the eight tables (one table per sheet) any other wins would then be organized according to the specific data in the elapsed time data field on it's data table (e.g., 5 minutes, 15 minutes, etc.).
The exact syntax structure of the functions and formula I'm unsuccessfully using follows below. It only seems to return a result of 1, and I think it is returning this value from the IF Statements. By the way, the Win, Tie, or Loss cell in each data table is cell formatted as a pop-up so I can either select None or 1. But in this example I'm basing this on the time period of 20 minutes, and out of the eight data tables I have two wins which also record the time period as 20 minutes, so I should see 2 and not 1 in the 20 minutes column of the consolidated data table. Also, I tried changing the syntax where I would type "=1" in the IF Statements, but it returned a result of =1, and if I don't include the equals sign and quotation marks the result just shows up as 1.
    My Syntax:
    IF(Trade 1::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Win', 1, IF(Trade 2::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Win',1, IF(Trade 3::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Win',1, IF(Trade 4::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Win',1, IF(Trade 5::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Win',1, IF(Trade 6::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Win',1, IF(Trade 7::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Win',1, IF(Trade 8::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Win',1, IF(COUNTIFS(Trade 1::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Time in Trade (in minutes)', "=20m")+COUNTIFS(Trade 2::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Time in Trade (in minutes)', "=20m")+COUNTIFS(Trade 3::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Time in Trade (in minutes)', "=20m")+COUNTIFS(Trade 4::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Time in Trade (in minutes)', "=20m")+COUNTIFS(Trade 5::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Time in Trade (in minutes)', "=20m")+COUNTIFS(Trade 6::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Time in Trade (in minutes)', "=20m")+COUNTIFS(Trade 7::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Time in Trade (in minutes)', "=20m")+COUNTIFS(Trade 8::'Data Recorded (1)' '* Time in Trade (in minutes)'))))))))))
Please bear in mind that the COUNTIFS portion of the above syntax structure is something I'm already successfully using to count the totals of other things not mentioned above, and I'm hesitant to delete it since it already works to my satisfaction when I want to, for example, determine the total number of overall wins. So, just for illustration purposes, I might have an overall wins column in my consolidation table that records how many wins there are, regardless of organization by elapsed time, or any other data field. In other words, the COUNTIFS syntax structure already works to my satisfaction. I'm not sure if it's possible to alter it so that it isn't so long, but what's there does work just when counting total numbers, as just mentioned.
In summary, I'm wondering which function I can use with the COUNTIFS function to determine which of my eight data tables are winning tables, but break those wins down further based on criteria like elapsed time, and in the above example the time elapsed is 20 minutes. As you may see above, I'm unsuccessfully using the IF function. Finally, I've looked at the function browser descriptions of things like LOOKUP, HLOOKUP, VLOOKUP, INTERSECT.RANGES, and a few others. And so far I haven't made good use of any of them the way I've done when I use the COUNTIFS function by itself when only counting overall totals. But now I must determine totals that meet certain criteria, as explained above.
Please help if you dare (smile). This is a huge project I'm undertaking, and so as not to cause confusion I have not included all of the details. But rather, I've taken a small sampling and set it to the side for experimentation. If this small sample works out to my satisfaction I can simply copy and paste the syntax in all other respective cells in the consolidation table, changing only reference locations, and perhaps conditions or values. One thing is certain, I don't intend on giving up on it.
Thank you for your time and advice.
    Blessings!

    Added image.

I'd like to edit the last paragraph of my second posting, but for some reason an entirely new posting is being created when I attempt to do this. So when reading this post, please use it to replace only the last paragraph of my second post containing the four inserted images.
    Last paragraph begins:
In closing, I need each cell in each column of each row in my consolidation table to remain as is. I have my reasons for doing this, and they all serve a specific purpose. The only exception would be the formatting of the last three rows as footer rows. Most importantly, and I should have made this abundantly clear earlier, my apologies, I need a single function and formula in cell E7 of my consolidation table that will firstly determine which data tables are winning tables while secondly and simultaneously counting which of those winning tables have elapsed times of 20 minutes. Perhaps, now this better explains why my syntax is written the way it is written. In the example I provided, if the proper function and formula were written it would result as 2 in cell E7 in my consolidation table. If there is anything else specific you need of me in order to assist me, please request it. Thank you.
    Last paragraph ends:
    Additionally, to t quinn:
First off, thank you for returning to assist me. I really do appreciate your efforts. Please be aware that I'm avoiding going into details about each and every portion of my spreadsheet because I wish to avoid discussion that is off topic. As I stated earlier, I'm new to using these features of Numbers. My spreadsheet encompasses a much larger amount of data than I'm referring to in the example in my first post. But in my example I'm isolating just the information concerning what I'm now trying to accomplish to finish my spreadsheet project. Moreover, most of what I've done up to this point I was able to figure out on my own, or get help from watching videos on YouTube, or simply using the application help menu. Please be aware that I consulted all of these, repeatedly. I even contacted AppleCare, and was told this sort of support is not available. In spite of this, I've accomplished a great deal in my first large spreadsheet project. Please be aware that when I wrote my second post and specifically responded to you, I didn't want to be rude or ungrateful, and I still don't, but maybe the suggestions you and Hiroto made about gathering the count of wins, ties, and losses are something I've already done. I think I've done that separately. These counts are already in separate cells, and they are working fine. In my first post where I inserted only one image you can see examples of this in my consolidation table image, in cells B3 and E6. I apologize for not making this abundantly clear earlier. Furthermore, the portion of my syntax that shows the COUNTIFS is the exact way I accomplished this, and it is written the way it is written because I need separate sheets, each with their own data tables. Again, in cell E7 I need to determine which of the eight data tables that record wins are also recording 20 minutes, but I need this in a single function and formula with the result appearing only in cell E7. Once this is figured out I will adjust the syntax to do the same thing with every column (these are not shown but they exist) in my consolidation table for the last three footer rows, named Win Column Totals, Tie Column Totals, and Loss Column Totals. The last three rows being footer rows may not be necessary, and if so, I can convert them back to normal rows. Nonetheless, my consolidation table is counting the totals of all data in all data tables. This much I've already accomplished. Now I have one last function and formula I'm working on in order to determine which of the eight data tables record wins, ties, or losses while it simultaneously counts which of the wins, ties, or losses fall within certain categories like elapsed time, and this will be shown on my consolidation table only in the last three rows. Yes, I've gotten the total wins counted, and separately counted the total number of times 20 minutes was the elapsed time used, but so far, just looking at my consolidation table I don't know if the total number of times 20 minutes was used was with a win, tie, or loss. That's what I need to know now. Everything else is already accomplished. So then my consolidation table will show the totals for all data fields in my eight data tables as illustrated in cells B3 and E6. The last three rows of my consolidation table will break this down in a single function and formula with one row for wins, a second for ties, and a third for losses. And each of these respective last three rows will in the same function and formula determine if the win, tie, or loss also is one of the data fields in my eight data tables. How? By the use of columns in my consolidation table. Remember, each of my eight data tables are identical. In the example in my first post I only used one data field, elapsed time (Time in Trade), to illustrate in one column on my consolidation table what I'm trying to accomplish with all of the columns not shown in my consolidation table. Once this is figured out I can adjust it to complete the remainder of the consolidation table. Thank you, t quinn.
To all reading this and attempting to offer assistance, if for any reason I'm still not explaining myself clearly, please continue to ask me more specific questions. I realize it's hard to communicate this way, and if Apple allowed us to upload the actual spreadsheet it would make this entire forum a better place to communicate. But that's going off topic, so let's simply focus on the matter at hand. Thank you.
    Blessings!

  • Why does consecutive figure numbering break when using anchored and in-lin objects

I have an ID CC2014 document that contains graphics with figure numbers associated (using a defined paragraph style - numbered list - continue from previous) and when I place these into the flow of the document with a wrap associated to them they maintain the consecutive numbering that was set up in the figure style sheet. However when a table or graphic is placed in-line with the text (anchored graphic box or inserted table) the consecutive figure numbering doesn't continue, it restarts as #1. The next anchored or inserted item then sees this figure number and follows as if the list was restarted.  What is up?
I have found that if all items are used as wrap graphics or separate text/table boxes the figure numbering functions as it should.
    Is this a glitch?

I had that happen a month or so ago. What I discovered was there was another numbered list setting in the anchored frames. That's what was restarting the numbers. No glitch. User error.
