Headless Server with 1600x900 resolution

Hi,
I'm running my Mac Mini without a monitor in a headless mode. It has OS X Server installed.
Now I'd like to connect to the server using VNC with a resolution of 1600x900. My notebook uses this
one. OS X onmy offers me 2 resolutions like 1024x768 and 1280x1024.
AFter following a hint of this community I've installed Display Menu which gives me much more choices. But I'm still missing 1600x900.
Someone has a hint for me to make OS X offer this resolution under Yosemite?
Thx
Sascha

When a Mac is running in headless mode the video card is actually disabled completely and a minimal software driven 'screen' is used. Apart from the limited range of resolutions provided you will also find it is slower to draw the screen - even for Screen Sharing.
The use of DisplayMenu and SwitchResX are software solutions but you could consider a hardware based solution -
If this computer is a server in a rack then you could connect it to a KVM and the KVM will make the Mac think the monitor is permanently attached and you will see the resolutions supported by the monitor attached to the KVM
If you use a Gefen DVI Detective+ or HDMI Detective+ then these devices will 'learn' the resolutions offered by a monitor and keep sending that information to the Mac even if the monitor is turned off or completely disconnected
If you use a Fit-Headless then it will similarly to the Gefen devices send a signal to the Mac to trick it in to thinking a monitor is attached, however the Fit-Headless is cheaper but unlike the Gefen is not a pass-through device
For the Gefen see http://www.gefen.com/kvm/ext-hd-edidpn.jsp?prod_id=14859 or http://www.gefen.com/kvm/ext-dvi-edidp.jsp?prod_id=4715
For the Fit-Headless see http://www.fit-pc.com/web/products/fit-headless/
Note: The latest Mac mini supports 4K resolutions at 30fps on the HDMI but older Mac minis only support 1920x1080 on the HDMI. As you only want to do 1600x900 this should be ok.

    Could someone with a t420 with 1600x900 resolution provide a screen shot of their screen?
    Thank You!

    Hi,
    I'd approach this task as follows:
    - type in the SCN search field (top right corner) the following search criteria: attach screenshot mail
    - just to be sure, restrict the results list to 'Collaborative Document'
    - study the first document titled: "Taking SAP GUI screenshot automatically and send as attachment through mail programmatically"
    - go on program my logic and thank the author of document
    In case it was the whole report output I was trying to send and not one screenshot, I'd probably be searching for: retrieve abap list memory.
    I mean no disrespect; it's just my "elaborate" way of saying: if you have an ABAP programming challenge, more likely than not the help and guidance is already on SCN - it's about searching and finding it
    cheers

  • SSH into headless server

    Hi,
    I'm trying to rescue my headless power pc box at home.
    On my desktop machine I'm running ArchLinux and on my headless server the Debian GNU/Linux Wheezy operating system.
    The headless server can be booted with an USB stick rescue system.
    I have setup my desktop machine to be a DHCPD server. I did followings:
    # nano /etc/dhcpd.conf
    # Using the google's dns in the example.
    # Change it to 192.168.1.1 if you have a dns server installed
    option domain-name-servers 8.8.8.8;
    option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
    option routers 192.168.1.1;
    subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
    range 192.168.1.20 192.168.1.020;
    I created the following file too:
    # nano /etc/conf.d/dhcp
    DHCP_ARGS="-q -s 192.168.1.1"
    Then I run the following commands:
    # netctl stop ethernet-dhcp
    # ip link set up dev enp0s20
    # ip addr add 192.168.1.1/24 dev enp0s20
    # systemctl start dhcpd4.service
    and finally I want to connect to my headless server with SSH:
    # ssh [email protected]
    but get the message:
    ssh: connect to host 192.168.1.20 port 22: No route to host
    What did I wrong?
    Regards, from Paul

    The headless power pc box should be my gateway/router that get it's static IP address from my ISP, and my desktop pc box is on LAN of that headless power pc box ( gateway/router ). Actually, I don't know how to setup the /etc/network/interfaces file on headless powerpc box to achieve this goal.
    It can't get it's static IP from the ISP, you manually enter that yourself or you have DHCP from the ISP (which is normally the case).  If you use whatever DHCP addresses come from the ISP (hopefully this is private addresses), then you don't really need Arch or anything else serving DHCP.  You might be getting into DHCP competition.  You only need one DHCP server.  If you're doing something complex like PXE booting, then you'll need a router/arch box capable of configuring various DHCP options.  One if by static IP, two if by DHCP, you shouldn't have to deal with your /etc/network/interfaces.  Then you can just figure out what IP has been assigned to your headless box.

  • Time Machine GUI broken on headless server

    I have 10.5.1 server running on a headless mini C2D and outside of some other rough edges, is running quite well. My issue is that whenever I connect to the server with Screen Sharing and kick off the Time Machine UI (via the Dock) to browse my local backups, I don't see the fancy interstellar user interface at all. Almost nothing happens on the screen except my Finder window repositions itself. It behaves as if the UI is there (i.e. the Dock, while visible, doesn't respond, I can't do anything else) If I pretend that the Time Machine UI is there and click on where the "Cancel" button should be, my Finder window goes back to where it was and I get control of my server again.
    It's behaving as if the Time Machine UI is running, but just not visible.
    Any ideas? Anyone else seeing the same thing? (or *not seeing* as the case may be)
    Config: Mac Mini C2D 1GM RAM, internal 80GB HD, external Seagate FreeAgentPro 750GB drive for TimeMachine. (here's a tip for future forum searchers: with the FreeAgentPro drives, you need to take it to a Windoze machine and disable the drive's sleep timer, otherwise OS X Server gets upset that the drive went to sleep on its own and makes navigating shares from a client give inconsistent results. The "Put drives to sleep" option in Energy Saver still works as expected, but the drive won't be in control of its sleeping schedule, the OS will be.)

    What screen resolution has your headless machine defaulted to ? Since you can get in via screen sharing, see what it's defaulted to.
    Consider that TM probably has a required resolution (like, Workgroup Manager requires 1024x768 minimum).
    If you need to have the resolution default to a different setting on reboot, try this that I put together:
    http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20070211165654615
    It's not my work just easy-to-use packaging of existing software (read the article).
    It's Universal and there's a link there for a double-clickable installer.
    For those bemoaning their experience jumping ahead with 10.5 server in a production environment:
    well, that's your doing. Did you do full pre-testing in a non-production setting and confirm for yourself that it's ready for your needs ?
    If you think 10.4.0 was perfect you are living in a fantasy. 10.4 server was a very rocky road til around 10.4.3 and there were still many fixes needed that came with later revisions.
    10.3 had plenty of problems (!!) and 10.2 was a beast til 10.2.8 and I don't miss it.

  • A simple file server with Arch Linux?

    Hello everyone.
    I had a lucky day to day and was given an old Pentium III based server with 512MB of RAM. I want to set up a server for my house that can basically act as NAS (network attached storage) and stream files to other members of the family's machines. I also want to install rTorrent and be able to download multimedia on to the server. I also wish to be able to access the server from a Windows machine as I would prefer if the server could be headless (no monitor or keyboard/mouse) after the initial installation of ArchLinux.
    Could someone explain how I might go about performing these tasks? I have never used Linux before (other than Ubuntu for web browsing). I am of course comfortable with installing the OS but not sure about how I would set it up like I want.
    Thanks for reading and I look forward to reading your response.

    You can use samba to share the files between the computers (this will work with Windows as well as Linux and Mac OS X).
    As for rTorrent, you can install rTorrent and run it via ssh. However I would recommend deluge. There is a server daemon which you would run on the server. And then a client which you can run on a linux machine (there might even a be a windows version).
    To use a headless server you need (well you don't need, but it is very helpful) to setup ssh. I am not sure what you mean by stream files to other members of the family's machines (share files)?
    Also if you are not all that familiar with linux, be prepared to do some serious reading or maybe look at using something like ubuntu (but you will still have to read). Using arch would be a great way to learn linux more than what you have with ubuntu.

  • Mac mini compatibility with 1600x900 Samsung monitor?

    I have just purchased a Mac mini Z0FW-2GB (2GHZ 2GB DDR3 RAM/120GB drive) and would like to pair it up with a Samsung 2033SW 20-inch with a resolution of 1600x900
    Does anyone know if this monitor / resolution will work natively with Mac mini? Does the necessary connector ship with the Mac mini?
    Thanks.

    A Mac can automatically configure itself for any resolution on-the-fly based on whatever EDID (display driver data) it receives from the monitor it is connected to. That is, for example, why all Macs, even older ones, are successfully running monitors like the new 2048 x 1152 ones that have recently come into the market. Even though older Macs may pre-date the existence of that new and never previously existing format by several years, they are still able to read the EDID and self-configure their graphics output into any resolution. For this reason, I doubt you will have any trouble with a 1600 x 900 monitor.
    And, yes, everything you will need comes with the Mac mini (Mini DVI to DVI Adapter) or the monitor (DVI cable), so you won't need to buy anything extra.

  • How to use webmail address book on Mac Mini Server with Lion Server.

    I have a Mac Mini Server with Lion Server installed; the webmail is setup and working but I can not get the address book to work.
    I have followed an instruction from this website on how to activate the address book icon in webmail but can not add any addresses.  Is there something that needs to be activatied before it will work?

    No, I didn't solve the problem. The monitor still goes to sleep with WIndows but not with my Mac Mini. About 8 months ago I basically wore out the power switch on my monitor so I bought a wireless power switch to shut it off at the outlet. The VX2835wm monitor itself is now starting to fail as well-- a couple of times it's gone through a weird sequence of flashing screen colors on power up and ended up in an overscan mode (that took me for ever to figure out how to fix). I have decided to replace my VX2835wm with a Dell u2412m once it fails for good partly because I really want to keep the 16:10 resolution (very hard to find these days) and partly because I want to see if a different make of monitor will go to sleep properly based upon my Mac Mini power down settings.

  • Messaging server with openldap

    Hi all,
    Is anybody here has an experience in handling sun java messaging server 7u2 with open ldap?
    I tried to connect the messaging server with open ldap but still got error "Could not connect to LDAP server".
    Isn't possible for them to communicate?
    Pls advise.

    Hi, Shane,
    I seem to be half way with the external LDAP stuff but run into problems. I added a set of objectclasses and attribute types to OpenLDAP. Next I changed the option.dat (and ran a cnbuild):
    ALIAS_URL0=extldap:///$V?*?sub?$R
    REVERSE_URL=extldap:///$V?$N?sub?$R
    LDAP_EXT_HOST=10.20.30.40
    LDAP_EXT_USERNAME=cn=Manager,dc=domain,dc=nl
    LDAP_EXT_PASSWORD=secret
    LDAP_EXT_BASEDN=dc=domain,dc=nl
    LDAP_EXT_MAX_CONNECTIONS=10
    LDAP_EXT_INITIAL_CONNECTIONS=0
    DOMAIN_MATCH_URL=extldap:///dc=domain,dc=nl?objectclass?sub?(&(objectClass=sunManagedOrganization)(|(associatedDomain=$D)(sunPreferredDomain=$D)))
    Would this constitue a valid configuration?
    The good news is that I see LDAP connections arriving at the OpenLDAP server. The bad news is that:
    1. I get errors on the ALIAS_URL0 and REVERSE_URL LDAP queries (see below for the log)
    2. the $D in the DOMAIN_MATCH_URL is not replaced by the domainname before the LDAP query is started, so in the output of imsimta test -rewrite -debug and in the log file of OpenLDAP the $D characters show up instead of the domainname they should represent

  • Automating a flex app on a headless server

    I have a flex chart drawing application that needs to be automated. When automated it will read in data from the DB, draw the charts, and save them as .png files. This works flawlessly on my localhost version of oc4j on my Mac. However it has never worked on our Solaris oc4j deployment which is a headless server. I've set flex to run as headless in the config files but no dice. How can I get this working? Here are some of the error messages I'm getting:

    String cmd = "/opt/sfw/bin/ff.sh "+ url; // ff.sh is a script which sets DISPLAY and launches firefox with the flex url

    Ok, I'm convinced that this is some sort of configuration problem. I can get the browser to launch when written as a simple java program compiled at the command line:
    import java.util.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class Launcher {
    public static void main(String args[]) throws IOException {
    String url = "http://www.ebay.com";
    String[] commands = {"/bin/sh", "-c", "/opt/sfw/bin/firefox ", url, "-width", "1600", "-height", "1200", ":5"};
    ProcessBuilder pb = new ProcessBuilder(commands);
    Map<String, String> env = pb.environment();
    env.put( "DISPLAY", ":5" );
    Iterator it = env.entrySet().iterator();
    while (it.hasNext()) {
    Map.Entry pairs = (Map.Entry)it.next();
    System.out.println("\t>> environ: "+pairs.getKey() + " = " + pairs.getValue());
    Process process = pb.start();
    The output is just to show the environment variables and it looks like this:
         >> environ: XFILESEARCHPATH = /usr/dt/app-defaults/%L/Dt
    >> environ: LANG = C
    >> environ: DISPLAY = :5

    Does anyone know how I can get the deployed version (running in the server container) to work exactly in the same way as the version run from a simple command line?

  • Run iTunes on a headless server

    I am wanting to run iTunes as a Music server on a headless server without an audio card. I have installed it copied over my entire library and turned on Homesharing. It works awesome with my Apple TV and any other iTunes computer but there is one problem. Since this is a Homeserver box (HP EX495) there isn't an audio card so every time I launch iTunes it first says there isn't a audio device. I push OK and everything works. I want to enable autologin and put iTunes in the start menu so I never have to remote into the box to push ok. Is there a command line switch with iTunes to not check on Audio/Video hardware?

    I finally found help for setting up itunes on startup with no sound card. This worked for my HP Smartmedia server so it may work for you as well.
    Copied from another forum (Mediasmartserver)
    Step 1: Remove iTunes
    Remove any install of iTunes form the server by logging in using RDC (Remember: Administrator, servername /console or /admin), After iTunes uninstall, go to Add/Remove Programs from Control Panel and also uninstall the following:
    "Apple Application Support", "Bonjour", " Apple Software Update" and "QuickTime" (don't worry if some are not there to uninstall)
    Now restart the server.
    Step 2: iTunes Service Errors
    Dial back into the server using RDC, Download the latest version of iTunes installer (32bit) from Apple, Run the installer, when the installer gets to "running services" it will hang for a bit then a error message will pop up regarding "ipodservice failed to start", Click IGNORE and the iTunes install will complete.
    After install has completed you may get several windows error messages regarding "iPodservice 32bit" and, or "iTunesHelper" simply keep clicking "Don't Send" until the messages stop appearing.
    Now disable iTunesHelper and the iPodService. Do this by:
    iPodService:
    Start > Run > type msconfig > Services Tab > Uncheck iPodService.
    iTunesHelper:
    Startup Tab > Uncheck iTunesHelper (you should also uncheck "Logon Warning" also to stop the annoying popup warning every time you login using RDC)
    Apply Changes, Click Restart LATER.
    Step 3: Add iTunes to the DEP list
    Now you need to add iTunes components to the DEP exempt list. Do this by:
    While in your server desktop using RDC,
    Right click "My Computer" > Properties > Advanced Tab > Under Performance section click Settings > Data Execution Prevention tab >Ensure "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select" is selected > Click ADD > Add "iTunes.exe", "iTunesHelper.exe", "iPodService.exe", "iTunesPhotoProcessor.exe"
    you will find iTunes.exe, iTunesHelper.exe and iTunesPhotoProcessor.exe at C:/Program Files/iTunes/ (default location)
    you will find iPodService.exe at C:/Program Files/iPod/bin/ (default location)
    Restart the Server.
    You may think why not just select "Turn on DEP for essential windows programs and services only" I thought the same but I can ensure you, you will run into issues if you do this!
    Step 4: Audio Configuration Error
    Login in using RDC, you should hopefully not see any iTunes/iPod related error messages when logging into Windows. If you do check your DEP list to ensure all of the above are on there, OR you could try disabling Windows Error Reporting:
    Right click "My Computer" > Properties > Advanced Tab > Error Reporting > Disable Error Reporting.
    Launch iTunes, You will notice you get a " iTunes had detected a Audio Configuration Error" Click OK, iTunes will launch. Close iTunes
    this happens because the server has no Audio Hardware, You need to install a "virtual audio cable" Download the following free program:
    http://www.softpile.com/Multimedia/Audio/Review13135index.html(this is the virtual audio cable)
    Now disconnect from the Server by closing RDC connection
    Now for this to work you must change a setting in the RDC program: Sound output MUST be selected to: "from the windows based computer only" (RDC for Mac) or "leave at remote computer" (Windows RDC) you need to do this for the Virtual Audio Cable to install correctly on the server. Log back in using RDC and run the Virtual Audio Cable setup file. Now start iTunes, you should not see any Audio configuration error messages.
    If you do,
    close iTunes, go to: Start > Control Panel > Quick Time > Audio Tab > Select "Direct Sound" > Apply settings and close > Try iTunes again.
    If you still have a issue make sure you changed the sound option in RDC correctly or try a restart of the server.
    This should now mean iTunes can start without any user input.
    You should also add your iOS remote device now if you are going to be using one.
    Step 5: iTunes auto launch on startup
    Now that iTunes is free of errors, we need to make it auto start up when your server starts without needing to login into your server via RDC every time to start iTunes.
    Simply add iTunes to the Start up folder, by either dragging the desktop shortcut to the start menu > all programs > and drop it into the startup folder OR place the iTunes shortcut into C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\
    Now to make the Administrator console login automatically on Windows start up, To do this you need to edit the registry of windows, Don't be afraid its simple and easy!
    Start > Run > type regedit.exe > HKEYLOCALMACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows NT >CurrentVersion > Winlogon
    Double-click the DefaultUserName entry, type Administrator, and then click OK.
    Double-click the DefaultPassword entry, type your password, and then click OK.
    NOTE: If the DefaultPassword value does not exist, it must be added. To add the value, follow these steps:
    On the Edit menu, click New, and then point to String Value.
    Type DefaultPassword, and then press ENTER.
    Double-click DefaultPassword.
    In the Edit String dialog, type your password and then click OK.
    Now Double-click AutoAdminLogon entry
    In the Edit String dialog box, type 1 and then click OK. (delete the zero (0) if there is one)
    Quit Registry Editor.
    As a nice touch (you don't have to do this)but if your like me, when logging in using RDC you see iTunes open, really you want it to startup minimized to the tray right? Yes! Do so by downloading and installing iTunes Control onto your server, its a free program.
    You can get iTunes Control form here:
    http://itunescontrol.com/download.php
    Once installed, open iTunesControl > Startup & Shutdown > Select Minimize iTunes on Startup > Apply setting and close.
    Also in iTunes go to: Edit > Preferences >Advanced > Select "Show iTunes icon in system tray" and also select "Minimize iTunes window to system tray"
    Your Done! if you restart the server it should automatically launch iTunes without ANY user input, easy way to check is by using a iOS device remote app to see if it connects after a server restart. or by using your apple tv to confirm iTunes is running. If you are streaming to a AirPort Express make sure it is selected as the speaker output from iTunes or via Remote App.

  • Problems with camera resolution...

    Hi everyone,
    I've acquired a security cam to test a video-chat with FMS2
    and encounter a problem with the resolution of my cam. It's a CPcam
    CPC371P and It is said to have a resolution of 510*492 (certain
    sites speak of standard resolution?).
    I wrote two simple applications, one to send the cam stream
    and one to receive it, here is the code of both my applications :
    Send.fla:
    var my_nc = new NetConnection();
    cam = Camera.get(IndexCam);
    cam.setQuality(0,80);
    cam.setMode(510,492,15,false);
    my_vid.attachVideo(cam);
    my_nc.connect("rtmp://server.no-ip.org/tchat_cam/");
    ns = new NetStream(my_nc);
    ns.attachVideo(cam);
    ns.publish("webcam","live");
    receive.fla
    var my_nc = new NetConnection();
    my_nc.connect("rtmp://server.no-ip.org/tchat_cam/");
    ns = new NetStream(my_nc);
    my_vid.attachVideo(ns);
    ns.play("webcam");
    As you can see, nothing really complicated. The applications
    work perfectly but no matter the resolution I choose, the image
    seems to be extrapolated and pixellised. I tried 512*384,
    510*492(supposed to be the cam res) and 240*160.
    In any case, the image quality is still really poor...
    If anyone could help me on this, Is it a problem with the
    camera, I may have forgotten an option in my stream ???
    Thanks in advance.
    Guaca666.

    After many tests, trying many different resolutions, It seems
    that It can't go beyond a resolution of 510x480...
    Does anyone know if it is the maximum res of a Stream or if
    there is an option to outpass this problem ? It may be the cause of
    the poor final quality of my video as the camera native resolution
    is 510x492...
    If anyone could help me, it would be a great relief... :)
    Guaca666.

  • Layout with different resolutions

    Hallo and good morning!
    Once again I need some advice:
    I have a program that is running on different machines with different resolutions.
    Is it possible to avoid, that the layout is paning all around?
    Best regards
    Hilby
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Hilby,
    No... that is currently a limitation of the layouts, where we try to adapt to each screen, but the objects and the layout may not fit into a different aspect ratio with a different number of pixels.
    The aspect ratio is the most important, followed by the total resolution of the screen.
    Some more information on aspect ratios is below.
    In summary, DASYLab is unable to completely adapt the "Screen" layout for evey monitor size and resolution. If you want to have a fixed layout that does not completely occupy some monitors, then consider using a fixed size, like A4 or A3.
    If you make something on a big monitor, 1600x1200 for example, and move it to a wide screen monitor,, 1600x900.
    From my friends at Wikipedia
    With computer displays, aspect ratios wider than 4:3 are also called widescreen. Widescreen computer displays were previously typically of 16:10 aspect ratio, now they are shifting to 16:9.
    Until about 2003, most computer monitors had a 4:3 aspect ratio and some had 5:4. Between 2003 and 2006, monitors with 16:9 and mostly 16:10 (8:5) aspect ratios became commonly available

  • Duplicating stream object to new stream with lower resolution

    Hi all generally I have a question, Is it possible for ams to split my original live stream to a new stream but with lower resolution, so i have two streams one with high resolution and one with low resolution?
    If not I how does it Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder do? I can steam up to 3 different resolutions from one camera object. Is it possible to do also from flash?
    I want to built a multi user conference application. But have some cpu usage  issues, so I need a additional lower resolution stream to use for the miniature views.
    Could You help me with this, any tips how could I do such a thing?
    I using rtmp protocol to communicat and adobe media server 5.
    Sorry if a similar thread was already published on this forum.

    Thx 4 the replay.
    So maybe I could do something like this:
    I am able to send two streams from one camera but they both have the same  resolution.
    Is there any way from flash app to send two streams from one camera with different resolution like FMLE does?

  • Terminal Server as Console on a Workstation/Server with graphic Screen

    Hello,
    I have the problem to have to support a server and a workstation (both under Solaris 8) which are far from the company in a remote subsidiary. We have an Annex terminal server connected to the WAN and to serial line (ttya) on both machines. When we want to run the console over the terminal server, we have to disconnect the keyboard - in this case console will run over the serial line.
    Anyway, we want (and sometimes need) to use the graphics screen when on the site of the achines.And it is quite inconvenient to plug/unplug the keyboard and reboot any time we want to do so.I was told there is a solution how to have both graphics terminal and console over serial line running, yet our local Sun support guys couldn't tell us. Any hints?
    regards, e. sanio

    This sounds like a thread on comp.unix.solaris I was recently into, but that's not a surprise since it's a common question. It also sounds familiar since in that case, the person was told by Sun that it wasn't possible. Hmmm, let's bust some myths!
    There is a sun info doc that covers exactly what you are trying to do. It will show you how to set up the headless server and what to change in your /usr/dt directory to allow the console login and the cde login to live in harmony. From memory I believe that doc is #18318.
    Also, you should know that Solaris 8 has a new built-in feature (available via patch for 2.6 and 7) that will let you set your serial console to ignore all breaks except the sequence:
    shift-tilde-control-b
    So you can send that break sequence when YOU want to see the ok prompt.
    Check out the /etc/default/kbd file for more info on what to uncomment to get that going with each reboot. You can get that functionality immediately with the command:
    kbd -a alternate

  • [SOLVED]bittorrent for a headless server

    Hi,
    I want to centralise my torrents onto my home server. It's running arch and I use ssh to administer it. I was wondering if anyone could recommend bittorrent clients for this situation. I doubt I could ssh in and access an ncurses gui or something, but maybe someone here has a better solution. I though of backgrounding a command line client but this would lead to a separate instance for each torrent which makes them hard to manage, so do I have no choice but to use a web based client?

    Actually, if it is a strong enough hardware, you can run any GUI application that you'd like with vnc (like I do Ktorrent and aMule on my headless Arch server).
    Here's how you do it:
    1. Install basic xorg, a basic window manager and tight vnc on the headless server:
    pacman -S xorg openbox tightvnc
    2. Run the server once so it will create ~/.vnc and setup passwords
    vncserver
    3. Setup the vnc startup script (so you wont need to ssh and manually activate it after the headless reboots).
    Call it vnc and put it in /etc/rc.d/
    Dont forget to set it up to run at startup in rc.conf
    replace daf666 with your username!
    #!/bin/bash
    # general config
    . /etc/rc.conf
    . /etc/rc.d/functions
    case "$1" in
      start)
        stat_busy "Starting vncserver"
          su daf666 -c "/usr/bin/vncserver"
        if [ $? -gt 0 ]; then
          stat_fail
        else
          add_daemon vnc
          stat_done
        fi
      stop)
        stat_busy "Stopping vncserver"
        killall Xvnc
        if [ $? -gt 0 ]; then
          stat_fail
        else
          rm_daemon vnc
          stat_done
        fi
      restart)
        $0 stop
        sleep 3
        $0 start
        echo "usage: $0 {start|stop|restart}"
    esac
    4. To setup openbox to run at startup insert 'openbox' in your ~/.vnc/xstartup
    5. Reboot the headless
    6. Install tightvnc on your desktop machine and connect to the headless: vncviewer 6.6.6.6:1 (replace with ur IP and screen num)
    7. Install ktorrent or what ever.. then it will keep running after you disconnect
