Heavy Locks on the Entity Framework Database

Dears,
We are having a database which was developed using a Entity Framework, the web application was built on the top of Windows Work Flow Engine (WWF) and there are some stored procedures given below, which was generated by WWF. On which there are numerous heavy
locks are happening and we are not aware of how fix this issue.
[System.Activities.DurableInstancing].[RecoverInstanceLocks]
[System.Activities.DurableInstancing].[ExtendLock]
Any solution to above problem or if you know the source of the problem, it would be much helpful for us

Dear pituach,
First i would like thank you for your replies, hope we could reach some concrete solution which may more people.
To
start doing something on the below procedures, first we need to know what was purpose of this procedures, this procedures are accessing some of the below listed tables. I think it was some standard behavior of Entity Framework System. The below tables and
some of procedures are injected into the database with a purpose, i would like to know what was it.
[System.Activities.DurableInstancing].[DefinitionIdentityTable]
[System.Activities.DurableInstancing].[IdentityOwnerTable]
[System.Activities.DurableInstancing].[InstanceMetadataChangesTable]
[System.Activities.DurableInstancing].[InstancePromotedPropertiesTable]
[System.Activities.DurableInstancing].[InstancesTable]
[System.Activities.DurableInstancing].[KeysTable]
[System.Activities.DurableInstancing].[LockOwnersTable]
[System.Activities.DurableInstancing].[RunnableInstancesTable]
[System.Activities.DurableInstancing].[RunnableInstancesTable]
[System.Activities.DurableInstancing].[ServiceDeploymentsTable]
[System.Activities.DurableInstancing].[SqlWorkflowInstanceStoreVersionTable]

  • Custom mapping is obviously not reflected in the Entity Framework designer

    Hi,
    I use the Oracle Data Provider for .NET 11.2.0.2.50 Beta 3 with the Entity Framework. I added a custom mapping to the app.config that maps NUMBER(1,0) to bool:
    <oracle.dataaccess.client>
    <settings>
    <add name="bool" value="edmmapping number(1,0)" />
    </settings>
    </oracle.dataaccess.client>
    When I create an Entity Framework model from my Oracle database the EF designer uses Int16 for NUMBER(1,0) fields instead of bool. If I run the program I then get an exception (as expected):
    "Schema specified is not valid. Errors:
    EntityFrameworkTest.msl(7,12) : error 2019: Member Mapping specified is not valid. The type 'Edm.Int16[Nullable=True,DefaultValue=]' of member 'ISVIPCUSTOMER' in type 'EntityFrameworkTestModel.CUSTOMER' is not compatible with 'OracleEFProvider.number[Nullable=True,DefaultValue=,Precision=1,Scale=0]' of member 'ISVIPCUSTOMER' in type 'EntityFrameworkTestModel.Store.CUSTOMERS'."
    Okay. Assuming it's an error in the EF designer, I set the type Boolean in the model myself for the NUMBER(1,0) fields. But that gives me a compilation error:
    "Error 2019: Member Mapping specified is not valid. The type 'Edm.Boolean[Nullable=True,DefaultValue=]' of member 'ISVIPCUSTOMER' in type 'EntityFrameworkTestModel.CUSTOMER' is not compatible with 'OracleEFProvider.number[Nullable=True,DefaultValue=,Precision=1,Scale=0]' of member 'ISVIPCUSTOMER' in type 'EntityFrameworkTestModel.Store.CUSTOMERS'."
    Is this a bug in the provider? Or am I missing something?

    Are you using model first or database first? If you're using database first, make sure you update the model from the database after adding that configuration.
    Also, if your model is in a different assembly (ie a different project) from your executable, your executable project's configuration file also needs the mapping section.
    Finally... there's been a LOT of threads about this not working properly in beta 3. I'm still on beta 2 and except for some incorrect error messages in the designer it works fine (I get fake errors). If nothing else works, I might suggest trying beta 2 as a last resort.

  • Microsoft open sourced the Entity Framework

    http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2012/07/19/entity-framework-and-open-source.aspx
    Microsoft wants others to get involved in building the next version of the Entity Framework.
    The source code is found here:
    http://entityframework.codeplex.com/
    The Mono Project is working to get the open sourced Entity Framework to work on Mono.
    So, with Oracle working on a thin ODP.NET provider, hopefully, it will work on Mono too. But no guarantee from Oracle. I know at first, the thin ODP.NET provider will not support Entity Framework, but down the road it could (hopefully).

    I'm using NHibernate and I'm more satisfied with it than EF.
    Alex said that the final release for managed provider will come with Oracle 12 which maybe will come at the end of the year.

  • Want to use the Entity Framework for Oracle

    Currently our web applications are installed on Windows 2003 Server, IIS 6.0. Yes, this seems like the dark ages...years behind. They have an older version of the Oracle Client on the machine (11.0.1). This version does not support Oracle.DataAccess 4.x. .NET Framework 4.0 is installed on the Windows 2003 server. This version also does not support the Entity Framework.
    However, my development environment does not have any Oracle Client installed. I am just using the latest version of ODAC/ODP.NET with Visual Studio 2010. I am able to create apps locally with the Entity Framework but unfortunately cannot get them to work on the server because there of the older Oracle Client on that machine. Also there are approx. 50 applications on that server that are accessing this old version of OracleDataAccess 2.116.0 with references hard coded in the web.config. What's the best practice for dealing with legacy applications that are accessing older versions of Oracle?
    In short, what do I need to do in order to upgrade to the version of Oracle that will support the Entity Framework while still supporting legacy apps? Do I go for an Oracle Client upgrade or I just merely get the latest version of ODAC/ODP.NET installed on that server?
    Thanks!

    What I would probably like to do is somehow set the dll directory to my local bin directory and just put all the .dlls for the most recent ODP.NET in my app and leave the existing applications as they are until I can migrate them.
    I've seen examples of this but doesn't seem to work for me.You can do that by having both Oracle clients installed, and using the DLLPath configuration option to force the applications to use the one you want.
    That said, the next version of the managed client is going to support working in Entity Framework, and that is just an assembly you can include in the project with no Oracle installation at all. So really, the best answer is going to be to use that once they release it.
    (Also - most of the time something compiled for Oracle 11.x will work in 11.2.0.3 without doing anything. The 11.2.0.3 installer adds binding redirects to itself from older versions, provided you were loading from the GAC.)

  • I can't save the record in a new/empy table of sqlserver in the entity Framework 5.0

    Hi guys ,
    I have tried to become a database expert in Entity Framework but I can't. because I am not able to save the record in a fresh/ empty table of sql server 2008 r2 database. for that I have watched the video tutorials step by steps that how to save the record.
    I followed the tutorials step by step and at the end the result is negative.
    I tried a simple way given below. please some one help me that where and what I missing the.
    using System;
    using System.Collections.Generic;
    using System.ComponentModel;
    using System.Data;
    using System.Drawing;

    _dbContext.SaveChanges();
    I have used datagrid addid a row by Click Add button on the NavigationBindingsource entered an employee name
    and clicking the save button on the NavigationBindingSource. When I am restarting the application I nothing founding on the Datagrid I am saving before.

    humm, I falling the ball to the batsman(sqlserver) but it getting "NOBALL" in response(not saving). Ok it my be problem in visual studio I am struggling to remove my operating System, VS2013 and sql server, by reinstalling it might works.
    because i havent any other computer where these application are installed for the test.
    If you create and send me a small project that contain minimum of two columns of table( in sql server ) which can saving new data from datagrid so i will thankfull of you.
    it is just for confirmation that either the problem is in OS or VS.
    I doubt that any of it has anything to do with the issue. If you think it does, then you can post to the forums.
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/home?forum=vssetup
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/home?category=sqlserver
    I think you are riding a bad horse (that tutorial) you are using, and you need to change horses. I think the 'modified' state is not being rasied on the entity bound to the grid when it has changed, and EF is not going save any entity that's not in a modified
    state.

  • Best Practices for Using Service Controller for Entity Framework Database

    I'm running into an issue in my first time creating a Web Service with a .NET backend with Azure. I designed a database in Entity Framework and had it create the models, but I couldn't create a controller for the table unless I made the model inherit from
    EntityData. Here's the catch, the Database Model has int Id, but EntityData has string Id, so, of course, I'm getting errors. What is best practice for what I'm trying to do?
    Michael DiLeo

    hi Michael,
    Thanks for you posting!
    Sorry for I am not totally understanding your issue. Maybe two points need your confirm:
    1. I confuse with the "Service controller"? IS your meaning MVC controller? Or ServiceController(http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/31688/Using-the-ServiceController-in-C-to-stop-and-start
    2.whether  The type of ID in the model is match to the database ? In other words, Is the type of IDin .edmx matched to the database?
    By the way, it seems that this issue is more related to EF. You could post this issue on EF discussion for better support.
    Thanks & Regards,

  • Update the database structure from entity Framework Model

    Hello !
    I'm using VB.net , EF6 with SQL server 2008R2 database.
    This is the situation :
    I have created the application. Using wizard I have created the Entity model from an existing database.
    A client start using this application using this database on his computer.
    After some month , I made some modifications on the database and I have updated the model on my application .
    Now I have a new .exe file that has the new model from the new database.
    I put the new .exe file on the client computer.
    Now on his computer : The .exe file has the new database model , but the sql server database has the old structure.
    I want to know : Is possible to update the database structure from the entity model on application ?
    I want to add a command on application that can make ( if is possible ) this update , so the database become up to date according to entity model ?
    Thank you !

    Hello,
    From your description, it seems that you want to apply a migration for a database first approach, unfortunately, as far as I know, EF Migrations is a product targeted at Code First and doesn't support Database First operations. A workaround I know is to
    use update-scripts. If your database structure would be changed frequently, it is recommended to use the Code First approach which would have a better workaround for migrations, for details, you could refer to this
    video,
     and with the
    Entity Framework Power Tools, it is easy to create a code first based project form an existing database.

  • How to create ViewModel in an MVVM application using entity framework where database has many-to-many relationship?

    I have started developing a small application in WPF. Since I am completely new to it, to start with I took a microsoft's sample available at
    Microsoft Sample Application and following the pattern of the sampke I have been so far successful  in creating four different views for their corresponding
    master tables. Unfortunately, I have got stuck up as the sample does not contain pattern for creating ViewModel when there is a many-to-many relationship in the database. In my application, I have the following data structure:
    1. Table Advocate(advId, Name)
    2. Table Party (partyId, Name)
    3 Table Case (caseId, CaseNo)
    4. Link Table Petitioner (CaseId, PartyId)
    5. Link Table Respondent (CaseId, PartyId)
    6. Link Table EngagedAdvocate(CaseId, advId)
    7. Link Table EngagedSrAdvocate(CaseId, advId)
    In the scenario above, I am a bit confused about how to go forward creating the required ViewModel which would render me to have multiple instances of Petitioners, Respondents, Advocates and SrAdvocates.
    Please explain details in step by step manner considering that whatever work I have completed so far is a replica of Microsoft's sample referred above. I would also like to mention that I have developed my application
    using VB.net. So please provide solution in vb.net.
    After getting many-to-many relationship introduced into my application, it would achieve one level above the sample application and I would like to share with the community so that it could be helpful to many aspiring developers seeking help with MVVM.

    Hi ArunKhatri,
    I would suggest you referring to Magnus's article, it provides an example of how you could display and let the user edit many-to-many relational data from the Entity Framework in a dynamic and data-bound DataGrid control in WPF:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/20719.wpf-displaying-and-editing-many-to-many-relational-data-in-a-datagrid.aspx
    You can learn how to design the ViewModel and the relationship between the entities.

  • Deploying LightSwitch applications to IIS using the Oracle Entity Framework

    I have had no sucess running Lightswitch applications on IIS using the Oracle Beta entity framework. Applications work fine from visual studio but after deployment fail when I trying to access an Oracle data entity.
    I have tried deploying to a 2008 V2 server 64Bit running IIS7.5 and also to a 32 bit windows 7 machine running IIS7. Both machines had the entity framework installed and I could connect to Oracle with SQL developer just fine. Briefly in the case of the 64 bit machine I get a bad image exception indicating a 64/32 bit conflict. (App pool switched to allow 32bit). The problem with the 32Bit machine is that the session either hangs or dies with an [Arg_TargetInvocationException]
    In all tests apps could connect to SQL server fine but as soon as I use an Oracle connection they fail. It would very helpfull if someone could confirm that they have managed to use the Entity framework Beta with Lightswitch and IIS.
    Thanks in advance

    Both hosts working now. Initially I created a service account for the aspnet service with extended rights and assigned this to the application pool. This subsequentluy turned out not to be required - ApplicationPoolIdentity works fine. What worked was as follows:
    1. On a 64 Bit host you need to set the application pool to Enable 32 Bit Applications (Right click the relevant app pool in IIS and select advanced)
    2. Switch off windows authentication for the application (leaving just anonoymous authentication) This was required on both hosts
    3. On the 32 Bit host copy tnsnames to the oracle client admin folder - the framework seems to ignore theTNS_ADMIN environment variable. Probably more to this but its working for now.

  • Config Entity Framework to use proxy to connect to the server

    Hi,
    I have my desktop application that use EF6. So the connection failed when I use the proxy.
    Also for skype or browsers but I just config the proxy on setting and there will work fine.
    So how to configure the proxy for EF6 to add proxy setting to my application ? Is there automatique way to get proxy configuration from Internet Explorer automatically ?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    >> So how to configure the proxy for EF6 to add proxy setting to my application ?
    I am not quite understand what you mean about connecting the Entity Framework with a proxy. As far as I know, the Entity Framework is a ORM item in Visual Studio, we need to host it to applications as Console, windows form and others.
    >> Is there automatique way to get proxy configuration from Internet Explorer automatically ?
    This seems to be more related with Internet Explorer, you might get an answer form the
    Internet Explorer forum.

  • Problem Entity framework and short types

    I am using the Entity Framework in Visual Studio to access a table in my oracle database. Problem is when selecting a record in runtime the following error shows up:
    Value was either too large or too small for an Int16
    This error originates when trying to access a table-field declared as number(5). The framework translates this in a short field. The max value for short is 32767, but the value in the table is 36001.
    Can I solve this?
    thanks.

    Yes, you need to change the mapping for that type to an int32. To do that you can add this to your configuration file:
    <oracle.dataaccess.client>
    <settings>
    <add name="int16" value="edmmapping number(4,0)" />
    <add name="int32" value="edmmapping number(9,0)" />
    </settings>
    </oracle.dataaccess.client>
    You should then update the model to get the new changes. Note that I've found that I have to change the types manually in the model, but after I do that once it works fine. Documentation is here: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/win.112/e18754/featLINQ.htm

  • WCF Data Service from Entity Framework 5 in SharePoint 2013

    not sure which forum is best, so im going to throw it in here.
    I am working on a proof of concept. I want to create a WCF Data Service within sharepoint 2013. not only do i want to do that, i want to use the Entity Framework 5 to expose the data via OData. Now, I have crawled the internet and seen various examples of
    how to create wcf data services and wcf services in sharepoint 2010/2013. and have tried to apply those as needed to create this POC. So.. what I have done so far.
    MonitoringData.cs
    [BasicHttpBindingServiceMetadataExchangeEndpoint]
    [AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode = AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Required)]
    [System.Runtime.InteropServices.Guid("0185abf6-e8b8-42e2-9965-6bb644338077")]
    public class MonitoringData : DataService<MonitoringServiceEntities>
    // This method is called only once to initialize service-wide policies.
    public static void InitializeService(DataServiceConfiguration config)
    // TODO: set rules to indicate which entity sets and service operations are visible, updatable, etc.
    // Examples:
    config.SetEntitySetAccessRule("*", EntitySetRights.AllWrite);
    config.SetServiceOperationAccessRule("*", ServiceOperationRights.All);
    config.DataServiceBehavior.MaxProtocolVersion = DataServiceProtocolVersion.V3;
    MonitoringData.svc:
    <%@ServiceHost Language="C#" Debug="true"
    Service="$SharePoint.Type.0185abf6-e8b8-42e2-9965-6bb644338077.AssemblyQualifiedName$"
    Factory="Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.Services.MultipleBaseAddressDataServiceHostFactory, Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.ServerRuntime, Version=15.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c" %>
    upon deployment, this error when hitting the https://server/_vti_bin/poc/monitoringdata.svc/$metadata
    "The type 'xxxxxxxx', provided as the Service attribute value in the ServiceHost directive, or provided in the configuration element system.serviceModel/serviceHostingEnvironment/serviceActivations could
    not be found."
    Breaking out the google-fu, i found that adding the dll to the <compilation> section was needed for the web.config. so i did that. and now i just get a blank screen with no errors.
    so i crack open fiddler. i see the following
    200 http
    tunnel to
    server:443 0
    401 https
    server /_vti_bin/poc/monitoringdata.svc/$metadata
    16
    401
    https server
    /_vti_bin/poc/monitoringdata.svc/$metadata
    0
    404
    https server
    /_vti_bin/poc/monitoringdata.svc/$metadata
    0
    best i can see is that im either not authorized, and its returning null (which shouldnt be the case) or something is just busted.
    The goal is to use ntml auth and https to connect to this service. any ideas?

    One thing I found was that it's never worth the trouble to place the WCF service in a web site running SharePoint, it's better to place it in a dedicated web site, as described in this article:
    http://sharepointdragons.com/2011/10/07/parallel-programming-in-sharepoint-2010-the-back-to-the-future-pattern/
    It's usually too much work to get the web.config settings right because of the settings it inherits from its parents.
    Kind regards,

    Lois & Clark IT Services
    web site: http://www.loisandclark.eu
    blog: http://www.sharepointdragons.com
    I'll say that it is one solution to move the WCF Service outside of sharepoint. but my "1000 mile" requirements makes this a necessity.
    To broaden the scope of what I am doing, I have a custom SharePoint Service Application. this custom application has a proxy that used a restful interface. Now, with all the methods i will have to write (over 100, x3 for all of the "proxy to a proxy" scenarios)
    I wanted to explore the idea of using odata. so i can use the various clients to write their own queries instead of me writing them all and exposing them. especially since its all linq queries to a database underneath. I feel that I am missing some specific
    component to make this work, and its surely due to my incomplete knowledge of WCF or EF.

  • Good or Bad: Repository pattern with Entity framework??

    Suggestions about not to use enttity framework because:
    1) entity framework is itself a Repository pattern
    2) So, what the use of having one more repository pattern over an exisitng repositroy pattern (i.e Entity framework)
    Please suggest.
    Thanks in advance!!

    I've used both nHibernate and the Entity Framework 6 and nHibernate wins hands down as the best orm, despite it's learning curve. ORMs can be massive timesavers as you don't end up writing boiler plate db access code.
    I used 3 different versions on nHibernate over the years. I didn't paticulalry care for any version of nHibernate. I much prefer EF over nHibernate any day of the week, month or year.
    Unlike the previous responder I disagree with testability, each repository should have it's own interface. And if implemented correctly it can save tones of time as you need only mock one or two repository methods rather than 10s or 100s of database
    gateway call using one class per table.
    What? Like a  DAO can't  have an interface, which is just as testable as any repository pattern using an interface when using a test harnerss and testproject to test the DAO? And one has to go beyond some generic repository pattern in
    unit, functional and intergation testing when it comes to data access.
    Unlike you, I want complete control of the object all aspects of it even in its usage of other DAO(s) that could or would be used, which the  repository pattern doesn't cut it for me.
    Like I said, I'll take EF over nHibernate, which is much like talking MS SQL Server over Oracle with Oracle being a PITA to work with it.

  • Oracle XE 11g and Entity Framework 4.4

    I have Windows Server 2008 R2 32bit and Oracle 11g Release 2 Express Edition installed on my server machine.
    I have Windows 7 Pro 64bit, Visual Studio 2010 SP1 32bit, .NET 4.0 and Oracle .NET Data Provider (ODTwithODAC1120320_32bit) installed on my development machine.
    The data provider download mentioned Entity Framework support. Existing tutorials on how to use Oracle with the Entity Framework makes me believe that EF is indeed supported! But when I try to create a new ADO.NET Entity Model, the Oracle data provider nor data source isn't listed!

    On the other hand, if I want to create a new database connection, via the Server Explorer view, there are no problems connection to Oracle's DB.

    The reason I need Entity Framework support is because we're migrating from MSSQL to Oracle and are looking for the most painless route to do so.

  • Entity Framework 6 and Odata v4

    I have built a simple WebAPI 2.2 project, using Entity Framework 6 and OData v4. I have a SQL server database that exists and would like to build an OData service for read-only reporting purposes. the database is a simple
    two table database in test that represents a possible development effort. The primary key on the Primary table is the configid (auto increment). The Primary key on the secondary table is the combination of the configid (link to primary), and the date descending.
    There is typically one update of the data per day and I need the most recent first.
    Running the project I can do all that you would expect. I can query the configs "/odata/configs". I can query a single entity "/odata/configs(1)", and I can query the detail "odata/configs(1)/detail". When I do this I get all
    x-thousand records for the last several years... most recent first... Great! My final effort in this project is to page the data at the client... I test the uri by using the following: "odata/configs(1)/detail?top=10". This results in 10 elements,
    however it is actually the bottom of the table data... not the sort order of the key in the sql table... can someone explain how I would go about fixing this particular issue?
    The goal is to use this service to produce a client that would visualize data changes over time. Paging would need to occur as you would typically expect. The client expects typical uri syntax, i.e. top, skip... in order to page the data. however the sort
    order is throwing the paging... Is there documentation on how to alter Entity Framework and Odata 4 queries to produce custom results? I am in the early stages of discovery on these technologies, but I anticipate more customization...
    I recall reading somewhere that Entity Framework requires a unique id on every table... is this true, and would that solve the problem? Altering the database in test would be easy enough... in practice however, not so much! Options?
    Primary Table:
    configid: int [primary key]
    name: string
    Secondary Table:
    configid: int (link to primary)
    date: datetime
    data: varchar(200)
    I created a new Web API 2.2 project and added the Entity Frameworks 6.1.2 and Odata 4.x.

    Hello Stewart,
    According to your description, it seems that your issue is more related the Odata RestAPI, I suggest you could post it to the WebAPI forum:
    http://forums.asp.net/1246.aspx/1?Web+API
    And for paging querying in WebAPI, there is a blog I think which might be helpful:

    Regards.
