Oracle XE 11g and Entity Framework 4.4

I have Windows Server 2008 R2 32bit and Oracle 11g Release 2 Express Edition installed on my server machine.
I have Windows 7 Pro 64bit, Visual Studio 2010 SP1 32bit, .NET 4.0 and Oracle .NET Data Provider (ODTwithODAC1120320_32bit) installed on my development machine.
The data provider download mentioned Entity Framework support. Existing tutorials on how to use Oracle with the Entity Framework makes me believe that EF is indeed supported! But when I try to create a new ADO.NET Entity Model, the Oracle data provider nor data source isn't listed!

On the other hand, if I want to create a new database connection, via the Server Explorer view, there are no problems connection to Oracle's DB.

The reason I need Entity Framework support is because we're migrating from MSSQL to Oracle and are looking for the most painless route to do so.

I had to create a New Connection, when the dropdown menu didn't contain it.

  • Using both Enterprise library and Entity framework as DAL for same application

    We have been using EF for large amount of data  retrieval in our current application. We faced performance related issues with using EF with large data retrieval and manipulation.
    We need to extend the same project with some additional functionality similar to what currently exists in the application and uses EF.
    For the new functionality, we do not want to use EF and want to use enterprise library for Data access.
    My question is if we use both entity framework for parts of the application data access mechanism and enterprise library for other parts of application data access, are there any known issues?
    if there are any best practices to be followed please share .

    Dataset? What are you talking about?  If you are using the salad bowl, the dataset with datatables, then here is the reason not to use them.

    What is Entlib going to buy you in performance? It's going to buy you nothing. You'll be better of going to the EF backdoor, use SQL command objects, inline T-SQL, sprocs, datareder and using custom objects or objects off of the virtual model returning a
    single object or objects in a collction., if you are concerned about performance.

     A nightmare, no consistency and complete Helter Skelter is what I see. Been there and seen it in action with different technologies doing the same thing in a solution.

  • Oracle Express 11g and Instant Client

    I installed Oracle Express 11g on a Win 7 32 bit machine.
    I verified from another machine I could connect to this instance using SqlPlus.
    On a different Win 7 32 bit machine I downloaded and installed instant client.
    I'm unable to connect to the Oracle Express 11g instance.
    Firewall is turned off and User Account Control is set as low as it will go.
    I set the PATH as it tells you too.
    I did create a TNS_ADMIN pointing to tnsnames file I'm using.
    But when I try connecting in SqlPlus using 'system @ dbname' I keep getting the following error message:
    ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    I'm out of options.

  • Info required : Oracle Clusterware 11g and Veritas (SFRAC) storage

    Hello,
    One of my requirement is to Install Oracle clusterware 11g on top of Veritas Cluster. That is because we are using Veritas Storage.
    OS : Solaris 10
    Please share any iinformation on this regard.
    Thanks,
    Kam

    Hi Kamalesh,
    thanks, sorry, if I was not clear enough in my answer.
    The reason, I pointed you to the Veritas documentation, was to say that IF there is a certain patch to be applied dependent of the Veritas SFRAC version you use, either for Oracle or for Veritas, this should be described in the Veritas documentation (as well as the respective certification note(s) provided in My Oracle Support -> Certification, as you can only use a certified combination of SFRAC and Oracle RAC on the same system). The Veritas documentation will also describe the installation and configuration of the stack.
    The main issues I have seen with such systems is mainly the configuration: The Veritas SFRAC and Oracle Clusterware need to integrate (the skgxn is the point of integration), which would result in a default misscount for Oracle Clusterware of 600 seconds (instead of the typical 30 seconds in an Oracle Only Stack). You can check the misscount and skgxn used in the cssd log. It will mention so during startup.
    If the installation of the two cluster solutions is performed the right way (as described in the documentation linked), then this integration will happen during the installation of Oracle Clusterware, which is important, as it is very hard to enable it later and you will most likely have to re-install Oracle Clusterware. So, preparation is important here.
    Once you installed the stack, you should be fine regarding patches, as Oracle would recommend the same patches for such a stack as for any other. Veritas might have additional recommendations, though. The same applies when thinking about rolling patches. Those are probably not possible due to dependencies on the underlying vendor cluster solution in such cases (exceptions might apply and you need to ask Veritas). Oracle Clusterware and the rest of the stack would remain to be rolling upgradeable as documented for cases, in which no vendor cluster is used.
    As you can see, running such a configuration is more complex. You need to think about two layers and you need to ask two vendors any time you are in doubt of a procedure to be sure again. This may influence the stability of the system. Commonwealth Bank of Australia therefore decided 3 years ago to move away from having Veritas as the underlying cluster solution under Oracle Clusterware and use the Oracle Only Stack.
    Now, I know that you have the necessity to use Veritas due to the storage management and other Oracle customers made this point before. However, with Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11g Rel. 2 and the newly introduced ACFS cluster file system, more and more of them realize that Veritas does not provide them with enough benefits to not only pay for something that does not even make the stack easier.
    Hope that helps (this time) - at least a bit. Thanks,
    Markus

  • Two oracle home 11g and 10g

    hi all
    i have al-ready installed oracle 11g on my xp and created database then
    when i want to install oracle 10g .it installed sucessfully
    but i cannot connect to any of the oracle software
    as  i put the SAME oracle_base for both the ORACLE 11g and oracle 10g
    Can anyone help me how to have two oracle home on a single machine xp?
    Thanks
    Misin

    Hi,
    there isnt any problem.
    During instalation you set ORACLE_BASE. It could be the same for both version but you have to set diffrent ORACLE_HOME
    Samething like this
    (it's on linux but the same is on win )
    echo $ORACLE_BASE
    /opt/app/oracle
    for 10g
    echo $ORACLE_HOME
    /opt/app/oracle/product/10/db10g
    for 11g
    echo $ORACLE_HOME
    /opt/app/oracle/product/11/db11g
    Now when do you want to run 10g set 10g enviroment and for 11g ORACLE_HOME form 11g.

  • Oracle XE 11g and Windows Server 2008 - 64 bits

    Hello,
    my questions are :
    - is Oracle XE working on 64 bits (windows)
    - if it doesn't :
    - is an update coming ?
    - is there any solution to make Oracle XE running with Win2008 Server 64 bits (i tried, but i had many problems with execution of listener)
    Thx for your informations.

    Hello, and welcome to the OTN forums!
    You could have used the search forum to find answers to these frequently asked questions...
    However, I give you a short intro:
    - is Oracle XE working on 64 bits (windows)There is no general answer to that question. As you've found out, there is no installer for 64bit Windows. As for 32bit, there are several Windows versions that are listed in the [url http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17781_01/install.112/e18803/toc.htm#BABHICJH]System Requirements section of the XE Installation Guide, and a few you won't find there, e.g. Vista or Home Editions. This means you'll probably experience problems when trying to install on any OS version not listed there. Some of them might be worked around, others may not.
    Since your target is Windows Server 2008 (edition?), you might get a more precise answer when you search for that.
    - is an update coming ?See {thread:id=2277728} .
    In addition to that, {thread:id=2278170} contains an overview for the state of all operating systems.
    - is there any solution to make Oracle XE running with Win2008 Server 64 bits (i tried, but i had many problems with execution of listener)The safest way would be to use a VM with a supported operating system.

  • Bind Multibinding Textbox using MVVM and Entity Framework

    I have 4 textboxes like, 3 take value and multiply it with corresponding bills
    <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=Amount.Bill100,Mode=TwoWay,UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}" Name="TextBox100Bills" Grid.Column="2" Grid.Row="1" Margin="7"></TextBox>
    <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=Amount.Bill50,Mode=TwoWay,UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}" Name="TextBox50Bills" Grid.Column="2" Grid.Row="2" Margin="7"></TextBox>
    <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=Amount.Bill20,Mode=TwoWay,UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}" Name="TextBox20Bills" Grid.Column="2" Grid.Row="3" Margin="7"></TextBox>
    mLast text box adds the value and shows it like this
    <TextBox Grid.Column="2" IsReadOnly="True" Grid.Row="7" Grid.ColumnSpan="2" Margin="7" Name="TotalAmount">
    <TextBox.Text>
    <MultiBinding Converter="{ikriv:MathConverter}" ConverterParameter="x+y+z" Mode="TwoWay">
    <Binding Path="Text" ElementName="TextBox100Bills" />
    <Binding Path="Text" ElementName="TextBox50Bills" />
    <Binding Path="Text" ElementName="TextBox20Bills" />
    </MultiBinding>
    </TextBox.Text>
    </TextBox>
    How to bind this textbox to my entity properties the way I bind the 1st three.So that I will get all data in my entity object and save it in data base

    Whatever you are doing in your converter class you might as well do in your view model class and then you bind the 4th TextBox to another property  (NewProperty in the sample code below) that gets set whenever the value of any the first three
    properties is changed:
    public class YourViewModel : System.ComponentModel.INotifyPropertyChanged
    //+ the rest of your view model class...
    public double Bill100
    get { return Amount.Bill100; }
    set
    Amount.Bill100 = value;
    OnPropertyChanged("Bill100");
    this.NewProperty = this.Bill100 + this.Bill20 + this.Bill50;
    public double Bill50
    get { return Amount.Bill50; }
    set
    Amount.Bill50 = value;
    OnPropertyChanged("Bill50");
    this.NewProperty = this.Bill100 + this.Bill20 + this.Bill50;
    public double Bill20
    get { return Amount.Bill20; }
    set
    Amount.Bill20 = value;
    OnPropertyChanged("Bill20");
    this.NewProperty = this.Bill100 + this.Bill20 + this.Bill50;
    private string _newProperty;
    public string NewProperty
    get { return _newProperty; }
    set { _newProperty = value; OnPropertyChanged("NewProperty"); }
    private void OnPropertyChanged(string property)
    if (PropertyChanged != null)
    PropertyChanged(this, new System.ComponentModel.PropertyChangedEventArgs(property));
    public event System.ComponentModel.PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged;
    <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=Bill100,Mode=TwoWay,UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}" Name="TextBox100Bills" Grid.Column="2" Grid.Row="1" Margin="7"></TextBox>
    <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=Bill50,Mode=TwoWay,UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}" Name="TextBox50Bills" Grid.Column="2" Grid.Row="2" Margin="7"></TextBox>
    <TextBox Text="{Binding Path=Bill20,Mode=TwoWay,UpdateSourceTrigger=PropertyChanged}" Name="TextBox20Bills" Grid.Column="2" Grid.Row="3" Margin="7"></TextBox>
    <TextBox Grid.Column="2" IsReadOnly="True" Grid.Row="7" Grid.ColumnSpan="2" Margin="7" Name="TotalAmount"
    Text="{Binding NewProperty}"></TextBox>
    You then save the value of the new property (NewProperty).
    Note that the view model class must implement the INotifyPropertyChanged interface for the TextBoxes to get updated automatically when you set the value of the data bound source property:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.componentmodel.inotifypropertychanged(v=vs.110).aspx.
    You cannot get the value of a two-way binding from one property and then set the value of another property.

  • Installing ODAC Entity Framework with oracle express

    Hi, I need to develop a .net web app with oracle back end. To setup development env. for oracle I downloaded oracle database express edition 11g 2. and installed it succesfully. after I tried to install this ODAC it throws me a error
    "Remove all the spaces from the chosen ORACLE_HOME" help me out to resolve this,
    Can I use SQL Developer to connect to Oracle Express. Kindly help me out asap.

    Hello,
    This is by designed in Entity Framework, the view is not designed to be editable by default. If you persist in editing a view, you need to create an editable view, for details, please check this blog:
    How to create an updateable view with ADO Entity Framework and with LINQ to SQL
    This blog is based on the SQL Server database, however, I notice that you are working with the Oracle database, I am not sure if the Oracle database provider for Entity Framework supports the editable view, I
     suggest you could confirm this on the Oracle database forum:

  • Oracle 11g and iSeries ODBC 32/64bit version???

    Hi folks,
    I've some questions....
    I need setup a new server with Oracle db 11g and from this db i need setup a DBLINK to an IBM iSeries (AS/400) server. I've some doubts about the 32/64 bit version to use.
    My idea is:
    Oracle Linux 64bit
    Oracle Database 11g 64bit
    Oracle Gateway 11g 64bit
    IBM i Access ODBC driver 64bit ( maybe 7.1 version?!?!?!)
    Do you think I'll be able to achieve my goal with this configuration?
    Else where can you suggest me a valid and wonrking configuration?
    Thank you very much!!!!
    bye bye

    Emilio,
    That combination of products should work, as long as the ODBC driver is 64-bit and satisfies the ODBC driver criteria listed in the documentation.
    If you have access to My Oracle Support have a look at this note -
    Note.561033.1 How to Setup DG4ODBC on 64bit Unix OS (Linux, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX)

  • Doubt with Windows and Oracle Forms 10G and 11g

    Hi
    I have some doubts in installing Oracle Client on Windows.
    a)Can we install Oracle Forms 10g and Reports 10g client on Windows 7?
    b)Can we install Oracle Forms 11g and Reports 11g client on Windows XP?
    c)If we have an Oracle Forms 11g and Reports 11g, can it connect to a 10g Server?
    d)If we have an Oracle Forms 10g and Reports 10g Client, can it connect to an 11g Server?
    Please, Can any one help me in this????

    a)yes it can be installed on win7, may have some issues on 64bit systems but they're solvable
    b)11g had some problems with windows 2000, but didn't see mention of any problems on XP
    c)if you mean a database server then yes - i managed to connect 11g to an 8i database, so v10 should not be a problem. If you mean a forms/reports server..well newer forms/reports builder might not want to run old forms/reports and vice versa, but I don't see the point of operating on the same files from different versions. You can still load old form/report source files with a newer builder and recompile them to run on the new server.
    d) the "client" is effectively your web browser with a java plugin, unless I misunderstood your question. What version was a form/report compiled with should not be an issue.

  • Oracle XE 11g x64 does not run. No *DBF files inside of the XE folder. Windows 7 Pro x64.

    Hello everyone!
    I hope you are doing well all. In my case I have some troubles by installing Oracle XE 11g on my PC. My OS is Windows 7 Pro x64.
    1. I activated the Administrator mode on my PC (net user Administrator /active:yes)
    2. Started the setup as Administrator. The setup process was finished successfully with no errors showed.
    3. Started the Database, OracleServiceXE, OracleXETNListener and other services.
    4. Tried to connect using sqlplus-> connect system ->password, what in result gave me ORA-01034 Oracle not available and ORA-27101 Shared memory realm does not exist errors.
    5. Then I recognized that my C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\oradata\XE folder is empty when it should be usually full with 6 DBF file.
    6. I opened the cloneDBCreation.log and it contains these data:

    I spent around 2 days to come to this reason and now I do not know what to do next.
    My actions to resolve this problem:
    1. Checked if my user has administrative rights and belongs to ora_dba. It does!
    2. Turned Microsoft UAC off.
    3. Set the system and local variables of ORACLE_BASE, ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_SID, PATH, TNS-ADMIN to the appropriate values in Enivornment Variables:
         - ORACLE_BASE -> C:\oraclexe
         - ORACLE_HOME -> %ORACLE_BASE%\app\oracle\product\11.2.0\server
         - ORACLE_SID -> XE
         - Added to PATH -> C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\11.2.0\server\bin;
         - TNS_ADMIN -> %ORACLE_HOME%\network\admin
    4. Removed Oracle XE 11g and reinstalled to another drive. No sense!
    Some more errors:
    1. C:\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\11.2.0\server\config\log\XE.bat.log

    It means -> O/S-Error: (OS 1387) Unable to add or remove a member from the local group because this member does not exist.
    I understand that I need to logon as batch job. I added me to this policy in User Rights Assignments, but still I get these "DIM-00019: create service error" and "O/S-Error: (OS 1387)". And I guess just therefore my database is not starting well.
    2. 127.0.0.1:8080/apex/f?p=4950 is not starting in browser. It is probably because the database is not running appropriately. Guys please help me to solve this issue, 'cause I've almost got frustrated to find out the solution of this problem. Thank you beforehand!!
    Kind regards,

    I have tried to install both of them lots of times but in each case I receive the same in my XE.bat file:
    Instance created.
    DIM-00019: create service error
    O/S-Error: (OS 1387) Unable to add or remove a member from the local group because this member does not exist.
    Have checked OS 1387 error at Microsoft Support and as possible cause of the problem they give as follows:
    This issue can occur if the environment has a disjointed namespace (i.e. the domain has different NetBIOS and DNS names). For example, assume that the domain has a NetBIOS name of "domain.com" and a DNS name of "domain-old.com." When users are added in the Windows UI, they are displayed in the format of domain\ComputerName. However, you notice in the error log that there was an attempt to add a computer account in the format of domain-old\ComputerName. (System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager install fails and generates ID: 4323: "A member could not be added")
    Tried to find out my DNS name, but it is impossible because I don't have any domain installed and my machine is not connected to it. Some other blog (Install Oracle 11gR2 on Windows) advices to work with adding my computer account to some non-real windows domain (just for the purpose of resolving the network) as well and reinstall the database then. If I undestand it right I need minimum 2 machines for this. But I own just one, where the server is based and thought that is enough to run the database... no idea ..

  • RE: Calling a Web service from Oracle Forms 11g

    I wonder if anyone could please help with the following
    We have a requirement for a real time communication between Oracles Forms (11g) and SAP over the RR LAN network.
    This would require the need to send info to and receive info from SAP as it will be an on-line validation of a Part from an Oracle FORM to SAP (response less than 1 second).
    What would be the best and easiest way to code this an Oracle FORMS trigger.
    Thanks very much

    Dear Oracles,
    I am facing problems while installing Oracle Forms 11g
    I read many documentations - and follow many pages during installing - but the same error appears every time
    I installed Oracle Web Logic Server wls1035_generic.jar perfectly, and then create a web logic domain through Fusion Middleware config wizard
    and test the web server through
    http://localhost:7001/console
    http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/8558/consoleto.jpg
    and then installed Oracle Forms and Reports 11g R2 using ofm_frmrpts_win_11.1.2.0.0_32 3 - Disks
    I chose Install S/w only - it was installed successfully
    then I opened Configure Classic instance and follow wizard
    It stopped at creating domain

    In addition to Craig's feedback consider the following:
    If you did not read the system requirements and installation guide, you likely will have problems.
    http://docs.oracle.com/html/E25460_01/r2_fr_requirements.htm
    <blockquote>1. Does your machine have a static IP address and/or the Windows Loopback adapter installed and configured?
    2. You indicated that you have 2gig of RAM. This is the minimum requirement just to install the product. It is very unlikely that you will be able to comfortably use the product with 2gig of RAM. Likely the performance will be so slow that processes will timeout before they can successfully start. You can actually see this occurring already - look carefully at the log info you posted.
    Further, if you are also attempting to run an 11g database on the same machine, this will never happen. Having only 2gig of RAM will never support running the DB and the components of FMw, and the Operating System.</blockquote>

  • Entity Framework : Outer Joins

    Hello,
    I'm trying to solve some issues with an application that I'm developing....
    I have a problem with outer joins:
    var query = (from i in dbo.ITEMs
                             join o in dbo.ORGANIZATIONs on i.ORGSEQNO equals o.ORGSEQNO
                             join iv in dbo.ITEMVERSIONs on i.ITEMSEQNO equals iv.ITEMSEQNO
                             join it in dbo.ITEMTARGETs on iv.VERSIONSEQNO equals it.VERSIONSEQNO
                             join id in dbo.ITEMDESCRIPTIONs.DefaultIfEmpty() on it.ITEMTARGETSEQNO equals id.ITEMTARGETSEQNO
                             select i).AsQueryable();
    If I remove the DefaultIfEmpty the query works as expected, with the "DefaultIfEmpty" in, it generates a sub-select that doesn't execute.
    1 ORA-00904: "SingleRowTable3"."X": invalid identifier SQL1.sql 44 23
    This is the occorring error.
    Thanks for your help.

    You can check my thread Entity Framework generates invalid oracle sql.
    Generally Entity Framework sometimes generates joins using APPLY which does not work on NON SQL SERVER system.
