HELP!  (-42404)

When I try to open Itunes or try to play a song using itunes it says: The iTunes application could not be opened. A required iTunes component is not installed. (-42404) Or it will say: The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.
Help?

Are you using any third party virus protection program? I see you have a Mac notebook, so maybe you are not, but thought I would ask. I have no problems with iTunes on my Mac, but I also have a PC and use Norton Anti-Virus. When using the PC, it is impossible to download a workable version of iTunes unless you first turn off the firewall on Norton. It appears that iTunes is downloading properly, but the firewall keeps one or more critical components from downloading. So, if you are using a product like this, turn off the firewall, and reinstall iTunes.

Let's see if a more rigorous uninstall/reinstall procedure gets us past that, nancy. See the following troubleshooting document:

    Hello mustangcim243,
iTunes has various components bundled with it that it requires for general usage. I advise that we completely remove iTunes and all of these related components, verify that they have been removed, then reinstall. To do so, please follow the steps in this article:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Note: it is important to remove the 7 components in order. Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.
If the above does not resolve your issue, I recommend we reset the SC Info folder:
iTunes repeatedly prompts to authorize computer to play iTunes Store purchases
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1389
(See Step 4: Remove the SC Info folder)
    Thanks,

  • How do I solve the following Itunes error -42404 I have tried uninstalling as well as repair and re installing, I keep getting the same problem, Help please

Please help I am un able to get my I Tunes back on my Windows 7 -64 after a Virus clean out, How can I solve a problem with the followin ITunes error of -42404 I have tried the usual uninstall and reinstal, as well as the  repair all at no success, do any of you have any solution Ideas that have solved this in the past? Please Help, Thank you...

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT as you start iTunes) then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.

Could you post some minimal diagnostics for us please? (The list of installed components can sometimes give us a heads up on which component hasn't been installing.)
In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". Uncheck all four boxes, as per the following screenshot:
    ... and click "Next".
When you get through to the final screen:
... click the "Copy to Clipboard" button and paste the diagnostics into a reply here.

  • I have been using itunes on my windows based pc for years but since installing the latest itunes update I have been getting the error message A required itunes component is not installed. Please reinstall itunes. (-42404)

I have been using itunes on my windows 64 bit laptop for years but since downloading the latest itunes 10.7 update whenever I opened itunes the error message 'A required itunes component is not installed. Please reinstall itunes (-42404)'
Itunes would still load and play music in my library and I could still sync my ipod but when loading a CD itunes would not recognise the album/tracks and I would need to type them manualing after uploading.
I have just bought the new iphone5 and went to sync the phone with itunes. itunes recognises the iphone when plugged in via the usb port or when wi fi is turned on but itunes will not allow the phone to sync.
I spent over an hour the other morning speaking to apple customer support and have ensured I have administer right and that UAC is turned off.
I was taken through msconfigure and adjusted the startup tab but still no joy.
In the end I was e-mailed instructions on how to uninstall and then reinstall itunes and component parts.
Now that I've uninstalled itunes when I try reinstalling I get the following messages during the download.
    The 1st message is;
'The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application  Support\Web kit.resources\inspector\Images\Spinner Inactive Selected.gif.'
    When I click ok the next message that appears sometime later during the install is;
Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) Failed to start Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.
The options I have are to abort, retry or ignore. If I retry the same message comes back and if I  abort or ignore the download continues and I then get the following message:
'Apple Application Support was not found. Apple Application Support is required to run itunes Helper. Please uninstall itunes, then reinstall itunes again. Error 2'
After attempting to reinstall itunes only some components were installed however itunes would not open.
It would appear many people have experienced problems with this latest download!

'The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\Web kit.resources\inspector\Images\Spinner Inactive Selected.gif.'
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • ITunes won't open! Error -42404

I was recently upgrading my computer with upgrades that my mac came up with for me and my computer shut down in the middle of it. When I turned it back on again the upgrade window was gone and when I tried to open my iTunes I got this error message: "The iTunes application could not be opened. A required iTunes component is not installed. (-42404)."
I've searched for this error on the support pages and have found nothing. Help?!

I had the same error messages. Quick and easy steps:
    1. Control panel/ remove All quick tunes and itunes.
(if itunes will not delete another step involved)
    2. itunes did not delete, you must install window installer cleanup.
search down the file for itunes highlight and remove. Do the same for quick tunes if still present.
    3. Start/search for files and folders: "itunes" delete them all, "Quicktime" delete them all.
    4. Your choice, go to itunes and down load Quicktime & itunes together, or go to google and download seperately. (my choice to do seperately).
    5. NOTE: ( don't know if this was necessary) but rebooted computer after each step.
Through much trial and effort and a bunch of research, it finally worked.
GOOD LUCK to all. Hope this works well for you all.

  • Help! my itunes won't open!

I tried to upgrade my itunes to the new itunes 8 but there wasn't enough room so I canceled it halfway. Now whenever I click on itunes to open it it doesn't open. Instead a message pops up and it says "The itunes application could not be opened. A required itunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall Quick Time. (-42404)" But I have reinstalled and repaired Quick Time and the message still pops up. Does anyone know what to do?

Try deleting your iTunes preference files (com.apple.itunesxxx.plist, in your user's Library -> Preference folder) and see if that cures the problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • My itunes wont sync with my ipod touch, it comes up with the message -42404

can someone help please? when i open uo my itunes the message :
'A required itunes component is not installed. Please re-install itunes (-42404)'
is shown and i have uninstalled itunes 2 times and re installed it and its still doing the same thing!
Please if someone could help that would be great x

    Maybe:
    "Error 42023" through "Error 42408"
These alerts might occur when trying to authorize iTunes or during launch when iTunes checks for authorization information.
Install the latest iTunes from apple.com/itunes/download/
    Remove the SC Info folder.
If that does not resolve the issue, see iTunes: "Error 42408" or "Error 42404" after upgrading to iTunes 9.0.3.
    above from:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3297
    Also try:
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    or
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7

  • Why do I keep getting an error message (42404) when I open my itunes?

I have tried numerous"fixes" for this and still get the same error message every time I open the itunes app.
I have re-downloaded and installed the latest version of itunes.   I have re-installed Quicktime and then I tried to
install an older version of Quicktime that someone said would fix it, with no success.  Itunes just keeps opening
with the same error message: A required itunes component is not installed. Please repair or re-install itunes. (-42404)
I'm afraid to connect my ipod Classic to it because I don't want it to mess up my music folders.
Any help with this issue would be appreciated.
