Help/Advice needed on setting up home office network please

Hi
I hope someone can help me with some technical difficulties i am having with a home / office network.
Computer equipment i have is:
2 desktop PCs on same floor  different rooms.
2 laptop PCs to be used wired in office and/or Wifi if possible any room
2 Apple mac Laptops to be used wired in office and/or Wifi in any room.
1 HP Laser printer with network enabled
1 TB HDD network enabled
1 Linksys WiFi extender unit
Connection equipment:
I have an NTL Cable modem
Linksys WR54G ver 2 router ( with the option of going to aLinksys WRT300N ver 2 router)
A Netgear Dual speed hub DS116
What i would like to do is have one office holding 1 desktop pc, 1 HP Printer and the other office holding the 2nd desktop PC with USB printer attached. I would like to be able to go Wifi around the house for all PC & Mac Laptops with the option of connecting them by wire in the office if required.
Idealy i would like to be able to share files, folders and printers between all units as well as all having internet access through the router's firewall.
I also use Zone Alarm Pro.
At the moment i have in one office the WR54G attached to the cable modem with one Desktop PC wired in to one of the 4 ports. in a 2nd port i have a cable going to the 2nd office into the DS116.
Connected to the DS116 is the 2nd Desktop PC, the HP Laser printer and the 1TB HDD.
The Wifi extender is in another room.
For some reason every now and then the whole system goes wobbly and seems to loose settings at which point internet access is denied and ihave to go back to 1 pc into the cable modem and starting rebuilding the network.
Can anyone give me an idiots guide to settin this kind of system up with specificsettings on each item if possible.
I would say i would also like to use 1 desktop PC for gaming now and then which at the moment sems very hit and miss with speed etc.
Any help warmly welcomed
Best Rgds

Following on from Steve's advice I would probably not bring the unwanted channels all the way down on the faders, either in a live mix or if mixing subsequently in Audition, as it may change the background acoustic too much. Leaving a bit of the background mics faded up a bit helps to pull the whole recording together and also means you have a better chance of getting all the faders back up in time for when they are needed without missing anything.
I didn't actually touch on this at all - perhaps I should have. There's definitely more than one way to undertake this sort of operation, and it rather depends on exactly what equipment you have available. So far, we know you've got potentially 16 channels available, but have no idea how you were planning to cover the different aspects of it. For instance, I would always consider it worth it to have a pair of ambience mics up all the time - which would get around this particular problem anyway....
The other thing you really have to pay quite a bit of attention to before you start is making damn sure (the previous day) that everything is in good order, and it all works when connected together. And if, for instance, you're going to rely on radio mic feeds from clergy,  that you can tap into these without difficulty, etc. Make sure your mic stands are not falling apart, and that you've got all the right mic stand adaptors - amazing how many times people have screwed that one up!
What this generally means is that even if you're familiar with the location, you still need to do a reccé just to make sure that everything in the venue is as you think. And if you can grab a dedicated assistant for the event, go for it. This can make carting stuff about a lot easier, and provide additional security for your equipment. And sometimes other benefits too, like tea...

  • Advice on how i can set up an office network with 40 computers.

I am planning on setting up an office network with 40 computers. What do you think is the best way i can do this? Thank you in advance.

Your first step should be to call an IT professional who has experience with this type of thing. He will need to survey the entire area and ask you dozens of questions about how you want things to operate. Then, he will present you with a proposal for the network listing all of the things that the system can and and cannot do.
Your second step would be to call another IT professional who has experience with this type of thing and go through the same procedure.
Your third step would be the same as the first and second.
Your fourth step would be to check the references provided in the steps 1-3 and then decide on which professional that you want to use.

  • I need help adding my printer to my home wireless network

My printer was shut down for several months. When i turned it on it was not longer connected to my wireless network. It recognizes my SSID and that of other wireless networks in the area. But I cannot get it connected to my home wireless network.
When I enter my passphrase it returns error "passphrase invalid." If I use the Push Button or PIN set-up I get the error message "WPS timed out."
I have followed the instructions useing the HP Printer set-up disc. It worked on one computer today (it printed a wireless network test report). But, then I could not find the printer on the network later. I also noticed the report does not show a IP address for the printer.
I have also been online with my internet provider and we changed my passphrase 11 times and the printer never recognized any of them. I am operating another printer wirelessly on the same system. By the way, shutting the other printer down did not seem to work. But, they both worked on the network previously.I have also added and deleted the printer several times.
The printer I am trying to add is a HP Photosmart Premium Web C309n-s
I am using a Windows 7 Operating System 64-bit on my laptop and Windows XP 32 bit on the other computers on my home wireless network,
    Please help.

  • Home Office Network Setup

Sorry in advance. Just spent the better part of the weekend trying to find related post/replies...and just got woefully confused.
I do architectural graphics and work primarily on a mac for PShop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Sketchup. I also use a PC to work in AutoCAD. Trying to update my OSes (major backup needed, hence the external drive)AND streamline my workflow.
Currently, I use sneakernet/flashdrive to share graphics files between the two platforms. This is getting old. Was told I could share an external hard drive between the two. Bought one without researching HOW-TO first. My bad. Before integrating the hard drive, would like to create a home-office network. (hard drive not connected yet)
    Here's what I have:
imac G4 17-inch, OS X 10.4.11, NO airport extreme card installed
Dell Latitude D610 notebook, Windows XP, sp1 (I know, updating after success here)
My Book External Hard Drive (non-portable, TO BE usb-connected to imac)
    ABS Snow
    A few pre-bluetooth printers
*Current set up*, archaic, but works fine:
Cable modem> ethernet> ABS (WAN port)
    ABS (LAN port)>ethernet> imac g4
    Windows wireless to ABS
    Printer > usb > imac
    What I want to do:
    1) Print wirelessly from pc.
    2) Access my mac-stored graphic files from pc.
    3) Share external drive with mac and pc without having to do the sneaker-flash drive dance. I intend on connecting directly from mac via usb.
    4) Read/write SHARED files to/from said external drive with either mac or pc.
    5) Use external drive for backups, mac and pc.
    6) Share iTunes library between pc and mac.
Money's my biggest limitation, or I'd just go buy a newer extreme w/ usb ports, etc. After trying to piecemeal the 5000 related posts I've read, I officially have no idea where to start.
I THINK I understand how to share files/folders between the two (http://www.ifelix.net/tech/3020.html) With my current setup, can I simply use file sharing in a similar way to connect PC to external hard drive? printer?
I THINK I will be moving my mac documents/graphic files/music to the external hard drive. I THINK I will chose the moved folders on this _external hard drive_ that I want to pc-share. I THINK the mac-pc compatible external drive will allow equal read/write access. I THINK it's going to be THIS easy.
BUT...does the Snow have the capacity to support my intended network (internet, external drive, printer)? Or will the mac need an airport extreme card to make this work?
Also, any thoughts on partitioning the external drive? I've read some posts elsewhere with that recommendation. It seems like a potential headache since I'll be sharing things like music and graphic files.
I have some serious backing up and general hd cleanup to do but am petrified to lose everything in my attempt to share this external disk. Help! Mega-many thank you's if you made it this far in the post!

Does the mac need to be wireless in order to utilize file sharing or 'Connect to Server' commands?
No. You can do both via an Ethernet connection. A matter of fact, file sharing will be demonstrably faster with Ethernet as compared to wireless.
Do I need programs like DAVE and/or SAMBA to make all this wireless talk happen?
Neither. These have nothing to do with wireless connectivity. When sharing files between Macs, you will utilize AFP which is built-in OS X. Sharing with Windows/Linux clients will require SMB. This too is available from OS X.
It sounds like, by your post, that the pc will only network with peripherals directly connected to the router (snow) and NOT to peripherals connected to the mac, which is wired to the snow. Is that correct?
Sorry, if I mislead you. That is not true. A PC can access either devices connected wired/wirelessly to the Snow or to devices connected to a Mac that is sharing them.
Let me know if the AFP link I provided doesn't answer all your questions. You may also find the following iFelix link handy: Sharing files between a Windows XP PC and a Mac running OS 10.4.x

  • Home/Office network setup (Mini Lan Network) if possible?

    Hi,
To all the people that know what the best way to set up a home to office network such as the diagram below, please help us out with the following questions:
I hope that someone can understand the diagram. Anyways,
We currently have both setups, but there is no network communication either through Home nor Office where a PC will talk to a Mac or vic versa, nor through connecting through the internet where our office machines will talk to the home machines and vices versa. This is where my requirements for such a setup is needed.
Our Office uses the iMac for general Administration/Accounting work, whilst the PC is used for Engineering Draft work and others. The home machines; the PC again is used for Engineering work and others whilst the Mac is a general Purpose machine used by most members of the house hold.
Basically speaking, we would like to somehow link all peripherals and machines in such a way that:
    - The home machines can talk to each other and their respective connected devices as well as the Office machines and their respective devices.
    - The Office machines can talk to each other and their respective connected devices as well as the Home machines and their respective devices.
Currently the setup is as follows:
Home: PC : Has one main user for doing Engineering work and General other purpose activities.
MAC : Has multiple Accounts for doing general work
Office: PC : Has one main user for doing Engineering work and General other purpose activities.
MAC : Has 3 accounts; One for main Admin user and the other two only to access MYOB accounting and shared folders.
If I can get a point listing of how to achieve all this, I would be very grateful. Also, due to software licensing imposed by S/W companies what would be the best way to reduce the number of software bought for each computer only to be run from one main machine... similar to how program linking worked in Mac OS 9.2.2. I would like to do this through Virtaul PC running off the iMac and say running Microsoft Office from the P3. I currently have MS remote Desktop connection but this logs out the user that would otherwise been logged on when I hook up to the PC, is there another way?
I hope to get lots of feed back for this one guys.
    Thanks
    Tibs

    You should study VNC.
You will need to configure the router at work, to accept and forward VNC connections. (open port 5900, forward to computer#1's IP address. open port 5901, forward to computer#2's IP address...see below)
You will need to set up work computers to be running as VNC servers.
Work computers should also be configured to have static IP inside the LAN. Your router will need a fixed IP address to forward VNC traffic into.
standard listening port for VNC is 5900 (i think), and each VNC server can be set to listen on different port. (5900,5901,etc)
You will need to configure home computers to be VNC client.
On home computer, in order to connect to work computer #1, run VNC client to connect to Work Public IP address (WAN router address) on port 5905(or whatever standard VNC port is). Work router will forward that hit on VNC port, into work computer#1.

  • Home Office Network Software Challenges - Post HP Support Assistant Update

    Hi
I have an existing home office network setup on an HP Officejet 7410 with assistance from 'Dean' at the end of 2009 / early 2010.
Essentially I have a relatively new HP Compaq 6000 Pro MT Windows 7 32 bit main desktop connected by ethernet  to a Netgear DG834GT router, a wirelessly connected Vista Business 32 bit laptop I use when in London and a secondary wirelessly connected family XP Pro Desktop.
All has been running smoothly until fairly recent HP Support Assistant updates for the main desktop - this has caused the HP all in one not to function and corrupted the HP Support Assistant software.  I have tried uninstalling the HP 7410 software and have had to use Revo Uninstaller on a medium setting to remove some stubborn programme elements.
I am now unable to reinstall using the Full HP Software suite but have managed to get the printer part working using the basic HP driver download.
Can anyone provide assistance as to how to get back my computer and printer functionality ?
I did try contacting HP support but as it is an old printer they will not provide support (without considerable charge) despite being related to their own HP update software on my somewhat newer (but again out of warranty) Win 7 main desktop.
If I can not solve this problem by uninstalling and reinstalling the software I will be forced to consider a new printer (for which I will get support)  but currently the most likely candidate is going to be a move to Epson which would be a shame after over 15 years of sticking with HP.
I look forward to hearing of any possible solutions but please let me know if you need any further info from my end.

Sorry to hear you also have a similar issue.  I tried every thing I knew but unfortunately due to the lack of support I gave up ,and ended up purchasing a new printer from a competitor after 15 years of using HP printers.  It was a great shame as HP had always been the leading choice for me as a small business.

  • Need advice on airport set up (home network)

    hi all,
i am just wondering what the best set up would be for my home network, listed below are what i have set up, and what i think could be the best setup
i have an office upstairs which contains:
    -ADSL2 modem
    -iMac 802.11n
    -PC wired
    -printer
    -750GB LaCie HDD
i have my lounge room which is downstairs and almost below the office. (in case it matters) the office is above my garage – which is next to my lounge room. so the airport will be going through the floor & my brick garage wall.
    in my lounge i have:
    -macbook 802.11n
    -iphone x 2 802.11g
-xbox 360 (currently have wireless adapter but i think ill sell it due to speed/depending on the setup i go with)
i am concerned because i need to have the network G for my iphones and depending on how i set up my 360.
i want to stream HD media to my 360 from my imac (through connect 360) and i have not been able to watch it yet as i lag every 30-40 seconds watching lost in HD. (that was using the faulty netgear DG834N modem/router which i have just sent back to netgear/supplier for a refund).
now after discovering i can use an apple airport extreme and express together i figured i could do either one of two things:
-have an extreme wired to the 360 downstairs( utilizing really only 1 port), have the HDD connected to the extreme (i figure if its connected via ethernet to the extreme, even though the imac is wireless, being connected to the source (extreme + hdd) i shouldn't get lag watching HD or using the 360 online.
Then the express is upstairs in the office where the modem plugs into the express and the express shares the network to the extreme.
now with this method i figure i can have an 802.11n (b/g compatible) network and all my devices can run off it. (don't need pure N as the 360 is connected via ethernet)
because the printer is in the office i would set the printer up to be shared via the imac and the laptop could just use the shared printer (i don't print too often). id prolly have to buy a wireless adapter for the dell but i could also share the network via ethernet to from the imac.
    the 2nd:
    - the extreme is upstairs with the modem connecting to the imac, PC, HDD and printer wired.
the airport express is downstairs with the xbox 360 (im assuming the ethernet port can send info and not just receive packets). this way the modems are linked up and (i hope) the network is running at 5Ghz so its fastest possible for streaming HD/SD media.
running this method i would need to set the imac up to host a G network for the iphones as they don't support N.
    the laptop can connect wirelessly.
now i have only just discovered you can make a WDS using an extreme and express. so im sorry if ive gotten anything wrong, i have been using my netgear router and to date it has SUCKED!
    a couple of questions:
is the express slower than the extreme, does it have gigabit ethernet and is the express going to lag being rougly 2 walls, 8-10 metres (in a direct line) from the express?
if i were just to keep my current xbox 360 wireless device, would it suffice for streaming SD/HD media?
now i am looking in the future at getting another hard drive (500-750GB) would i be best to get a time capsule or just sticking with the extreme? can the time capsule rout/network as good as the extreme?
and now, for my final question, i have a friend 10 townhouses, 5-6 real houses down (if i had to guess he'd be 100 metres from my place). if he were to get an extreme, could he use my internet/connect to my network?
i appreciate anyone helping me, i know its a long read but i just don't want to overdo it, also i don't want to be lagged if i feel like playing some multiplayer halo3/GTA IV or want to watch HD/SD media.
    thanks guys

That is a possibility. However you may find that the wireless signal can not penetrate the 2 walls and still be usable. You will only know by trying it.
    the 2nd:
    * the extreme is upstairs with the modem connecting to the imac, PC, HDD and printer wired.
the airport express is downstairs with the xbox 360 (im assuming the ethernet port can send info and not just receive packets). this way the modems are linked up and (i hope) the network is running at 5Ghz so its fastest possible for streaming HD/SD media.
running this method i would need to set the imac up to host a G network for the iphones as they don't support N.
    the laptop can connect wirelessly.
The iMac would NOT be able to host a G network of the iPhone. The iMac would need to be connected wirelessly to the signal provided by the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). It can't connect to a wireless network as a client AND host a wireless network at the same time.

  • Multiple Xserve config- help/advice needed...

We have just purchased a second xserve (quadcore) to go along with our current xserve (G5 dual-core). We run FTP, web(wikis, blogs, etc that use the LDAP for authentication), LDAP, Open Directory, softwareupdate, DNS, NetInstall (occasionally) and AFP services.
I would like to share the services across the two servers- using the new, more powerful machine to host the home directories, AFP, FTP, etc; and the older machine to handle web, etc. My concern is that I would like to have both use the same LDAP so that I only have to enter in users once, and so that everyone can access their files via FTP at one IP.
Is this even the best way to be thinking about implementing this? Will assigning one server as the OD master, and the other as the OD replica provide both servers with the same LDAP directory? I have clearly never done this before, and I am very excited to be able to use two servers to increase the efficiency. Thanks for any help/advice.

    Hi
+Is this even the best way to be thinking about implementing this?+
    Yes
+Will assigning one server as the OD master, and the other as the OD replica provide both servers with the same LDAP directory?+
    Yes
I've done this myself many times. The relevant Admin Manuals do have enough information outlining what needs to be done:
    http://www.apple.com/server/resources/
Steve's link is something you should definitely look at. There are some minor differences but nothing to get worried about. Both Servers have to be exactly the same OS and SSH needs to be enabled.

  • Need a hint for home office / 871 does not support port-security - FPM ?

    Hi,
i want to realize the following setup:
    - Central Site 871 with Internet Connection and static IP
    - Home office 871 with Internet Connection and static IP. On that home office router, there should be 2 Vlans: 1 for the office work and one for the user's private PC. All Traffic from the "office" Vlan is being put into a VPN to the central site. All Traffic on the other interface is being natted and goes straight to the internet.
To minimize security issues, i tried to configure port-security, so that the user cannot connect with his private PC to the office LAN ports and vice versa. Unfortunately, port-security seems not to be supported on the 871 (advanced ip services image).
Now i looked for an alternative...and came over to FPM (flexible packet matching).
If i understood right, you can classify packets for example by their source MAC address and if this field matches a specific value (the mac of the work pc), packets can be dropped by a policy.
Of course i cannot avoid that the user connects the work pc together with his private pc (this is then related to the OS Security to keep out viruses, worms, trojans, etc). But i could/want to restrict the internet access with the work pc through "normal" Internet access - the users should not be able to do that (must use the company's proxy).
    I did the follwing config:
    class-map type access-control match-any c2
    match start l2-start offset 48 size 6 regex "0xabcd1234fedc"
match field ETHER source-mac regex "abcd1234fedc"
    policy-map type access-control p2
    class c2
    drop
    interface Vlan1
    ip address 192.168.20.1 255.255.255.0
    ip nat inside
    ip virtual-reassembly
    service-policy type access-control input p2
    service-policy type access-control output p2
As this feature is quite new, i'm not familiar with it's syntax.
I also tried to use "string" instead of regexp, but i'm still able to connect the office pc to the private Lan and i am able to access the "Internet" (currently it's only setup in a lab).
As i understood so far, the offset is the value in bits, and size is in bytes. is that correct?
Has anyone yet some experience with FPM or maybe any hint for me how to realize the requested setup with the 871 routers?
    bets regards,
    Andy

For the FPM feature to work you will need PHDF files for the protocols you want to scan for to be loaded on your routers. The files can be downloaded from cisco's website. In your case you will have to download ether.phdf file.

My iPod was working fine, until I tried to update it! Then my computer froze, and the iPod just showed the 'Do Not Disconnect' for hours. The iPod icon wasn't showing up in iTunes or on my desktop, so I disconnected it, and now I just get the little folder and exclamation point icon.
I have followed all the advice on the various Apple documents,, but every time I try to restore it, the update doesn't seem to recognise the iPod, and keeps telling me 'Plug in iPod', even though it is plugged in. I have tried using different USB ports, and the iPod does show up in My Computer (as Drive F), but the updater refuses to recognise it.
    I have tried -
    Resetting iPod
    Putting it into Disk Mode
Have reinstalled Itunes, and redownloaded the iPod updater. Have also tried using old updaters, as well as reinstalling off the original CD that came with the iPod.
Have installed Service Pack 2, run Scan Disk, disconnected firewalls, AVG anti-virus etc.
My iPod is fully charged, but when I turn it on I keep getting the Apple logo, then the folder/exclamation point icon.
    Any help/advice much appreciated!
    Thank you

Somebody please help. I'm trying hard not to sand in line at Sam's Club to return a 3 years old item. LOL. But at least I have this option. I'm grandfathered into their old return anytime policy.
I've tried formatting it, I can't even format it. Anybody?

  • Advice needed for backup strategy for office

My office is switching from PC to Mac (yay!) and I'm in charge of setting up the system. We'll be using 4 iMacs and a Mac Mini Server with ethernet connections. I'd like to ask what is recommended for backing up these computers.
My thought would be to back up the iMacs separately from the server - is this definitely the way to go?
I'm thinking to get a 3TB Time Capsule for the 4 iMacs so that Time Capsule will do automatic backups.
    - Is it OK to have 4 iMacs backup to one Time Capsule like this?
As for the Mac Mini server, I'm not sure how to best back it up.
Since it has two 1TB drives, I'm thinking of using one drive for data and having it automatically backup to the other internal drive. Any thoughts on this idea?
Or, it is possible to connect an external USB drive to the Time Capsule's USB port, and have Time Machine backup the server to the external drive?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

The TC is really a home solution.
For business I think you should consider something extra.
Although 4 computers and a server is not a big setup, it is worthwhile doing a more professional backup and use something more professional than Time Machine.
    For instance..
    http://www.retrospect.com/au/products/mac
I have not used it.. but I see it recommended in business / larger installs. It is not cheap but well worth considering.
I would not use the internal disk of the server for backup.

You can raid the two disks if you don't need the capacity.
But backup to a USB drive plugged in.. USB3 drives are cheap and speedy. Much more reliable than using network drives.
Raid for integrity of working data.. backup to separate change over disks.
So weekly you change over the USB drive for backup and store the other one at home.

You can do this.. It is fine to have 4 Macs backup to it. But if you are not using the wireless router it is a waste.. you can just backup over network to the server.. TM works fine on network.
You can buy another 3TB USB drive for backup of the clients.. normally though you want all the working data on the server and back that up. You are thinking a more peer to peer model.. once you introduce the server you can work on a more server client model where the current files are held on the server.
