Help - Changed an application to a document file type by mistake

Hi,
I was trying to automate converting images to low resolution JPEGS in Photoshop, and somehow got Automator to convert Photoshop into a document. I reinstalled and under my iuser, it still recognizes the Photoshop application as a document. Anyone know how I can undo what Automator did, and return Photoshop back to its application status again?
Thanks,
Ben

Thanks. I went into get info first thing before, and all looked well other than it wanted to "open with". And this stumped me. You were right though, it was *** simple as changing the file name to .app and it now works. Blind on my part....
Thanks much!!!

  • Testing for applications associated with a file type

    Dear contributors,
while trying to open a simple *.txt file via java.awt.Desktop.open(File)
the IOException is thrown. According to Javadoc there is "no associated
application or the associated application fails to be launched" in this
case. Interestingly the Desktop class does not provide methods to test
for particular file type registration, just for the "support" of a generic
Desctop.Action. Colud you please illuminate how to check, whether a file
extension / file type / mime type has an associated application in a platform
(in)dependent way at least for "opening" ?
    OS: Linux, 2.6.24-22-generic, x86_64
    JDK: 1.6.0_07, 64 bit
    Many thanks
    Jaro Pullmann

If you make the call and an exception is thrown, then there is not application associated with the file type--otherwise I believe you need to do some registry work if you do not want a pretest.

  • I want to change the way Safari opens a file type.

Is there a forum for Windows users of Safari?
I am using Windows 7 and just downloaded Safari 5.1.7
I want to change the way Safari opens a file type. Specifically the AVI file type. I would like Safari to cause VLC Player to launch, outside of Safari, and play the AVI file. I don't find that Safari provides me with a method to change how Safari will open a file. Presently Safari will do nothing when I pull down the file menu, select "open", and then select an AVI file from a disk folder. I have Opera, Firefox and IE launching VLC,,,, but not Safari.

Yes, the Safari for Windows forum is here:

I have asked the Hosts to move your post to that forum.

  • How to change default application associated with some mime types?

When we install some new program, for example GIMP, I assume the newly installed program is added to some mime type database, and the /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache file is automatically generated.
Using my example, GIMP will be the default application for all its registered mime types, even application/pdf. I surely don't want this to happen, and I surely don't want to create all kinds of files that GIMP registered and right click on them and choose Properties and then change it in the Open with... tab. I want to systematically de-prioritize GIMP so that it will not override my previously assigned default applications.
I wrote a script to modify the mimeinfo.cache file, and it seems to work great. However, after a reboot or upgrade or something I didn't notice, the default application of application/pdf is reconfigured to GIMP. I think the cache suffix of the file indicates that it is just a cache and may be changed by system unnoticed. So I am looking for a new way to change the default applications.
As far as I know or guess from the phenomena, there should be some system utility that generates the mimeinfo.cache file, it seems to parse all the *.desktop files under /usr/share/applications and register them to certain mime types accordingly. The sequence of the *.desktop files get parsed seems to be related to the time the application is installed, and the newly installed applications seems to be parsed later and inserted in the front of the application list or be parsed earlier and appended to the application list. Is there some place I can change the sequence of the parsing? Or is there some place I can change the behavior of the system utility?
I know that I can populate my ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list to override the system wide defaults, however, I want a more elegant way to this.
Any opinion on this is welcomed.

Ah, right. Don't know what DE you are on, but in Gnome:  right-click a (e.g. pdf) file -> Preferences -> Open with.
All Applications listed there will be available from the right click menu, the marked one will be used on double-click.
    errgrh...

I guess what I am trying to propose is this: "de-prioritize" GIMP in its .dekstop file for the types you dont want it to be associated with, and manually add it back in through "Open With" for the file types you want it to be an option. Not sure if this is solving anything for you though

  • Using X11 application as default for file type?

    Hello,
I wanted to know if it's possible to set an X11 application as default application to open a certain file type.
I tried the "open with" option on a file type, but the X11 application I wanted to associate to was unavailable (impossible to select) in the file explorer window.
    Thanks.

Unix executables are not usually "visible." "Standard" OS X applications use the ".app" extension, but Unix executables do not. I suspect that's why you are having the problem. Making the association through OS X may not be possible.

  • Need help changing from SQL dbo to mdf file

My project was started using dbo is there a way to change this to an mdf without changing out the database.

I think you answered my question the datasets in my project are connected to sqlexpress instance, Iwant to remove this connection and add a connection to an MDF file in my project. Maybe this will help explain my question better.
You cannot directly add connection to mdf file. But you can achieve this by first attching this MDF file to SQL express( this has some limitations like max of  4 Gfile can be attached to Sql server 2008 and 10 G for 2012).Is this you want to achieve ?

  • Need help changing the setting to preview entire file names

Using Leopard, I would like to to be able to read the entire name of a file.
For example, my files might say (File 2.....609). What the file is named is File 2 Graphs 6209. How can I set up Leopard to allow me to read the entire file, so I don't have to guess the file?

Ah! I tend to avoid using column view for folders containing items with long names, because it increases the amount of horizontal scrolling needed to see everything, & because I'm usually interested in seeing & sorting items by the non-name columns available in list view.
FWIW, I tried the column view drag handle double click tip on one of the folders containing some of my extra long named items & it does expand to show the entire name, but I don't care for the result: the Finder window expands horizontally so much that it won't all fit within even a 24" widescreen display! So not only do I have to scroll the window's content horizontally to see everything, I have to move the window partially offscreen to do so. That is too much of a chore to make this a very good alternative for long path names.
It occurs to me that there might be a more elegant, subtle, & "it just works" Apple-like solution possible: instead of just abbreviating the displayed item name by replacing enough of the middle characters of the name with an ellipsis to make it fit, it would be cool if this were adaptive & tried first to abbreviate the non-unique parts of the name, relative to all the items in the column. So if say 3 files in a view contained the same 12 character sequence, that sequence would appear with the same abbreviation in each file, more frequently preserving the display of the unique parts of each file name.
    Does this make sense?

  • How to change what app opens a certain file type downloaded in GoogleChrome

How do you change what program is the default to open a certain type of file? My specific issue is torrent files downloaded in Chrome automatically open in Limewire but I want it to open in Vuze. Is this a Chrome setting or an OSX setting that I need to change? In finder the torrents show as Limewire files and when I click "open with" I can select Vuze, tell it to always use Vuze but it only applies to each individual file and not new ones that I download.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

I found the answer myself - go to get info on a file and change the program and select apply to all. This seems to have worked for all new files

Select a file in question. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Open With section select the desired default application from the drop down menu. Then click on the Change All button.

  • [SOLVED]Gnome 3 | There is no application installed for _any file type

I just installed arch and gnome 3. I'm trying to open files via nautilus, but get "There is no application installed for ..." for any type of file I try, including plain text files, binaries, etc. Do I have to configure gnome manually for it to open these files? I've read the arch beginner wiki and the gnome wiki, but this problem is not mentioned there. Any help would be appreciated.
    EDIT: Solved
There were three things I needed to do to get this working correctly:
    1. $ pacman -S gnome-mime-data
    2. For text files, pacman -S gvim #This conflicts with vim, but the package gvim now contains vim (and vice versa, but nautilus won't open files unless gvim is installed instead of vim)
    3. Binary files: I tried running some binaries I programmed on Ubuntu, but they wouldn't run until I recompiled them. Duh.
Note: I still have a small issue when opening a file that has no mime data associated with it. I can click "select application," but I am forced to choose from a very limited list, and there is no option to enter a command or browse for other programs.

    Cheers.
Regarding your music player, I recently had a struggle deciding which way to go.
Banshee, no, pulls in gnome and mono stuff (running as pure a Xfce desktop as I possibly can here). Exaile, have tried and really don't like it. Rhythmbox, again, too ingrained with gnome libraries for my liking. Amarok, unfortunately the love affair ended with 2.0. Clementine (read Amarok pre 2.0), yes please, but a gtk port would be nice, I have no other use for Qt. Songbird, yes please again, but no longer linux supported. Nightingale (read Songbird fork), seems to have lost momentum.
Of course, this is all just my personal opinion, but you can see the problem I had. There does not seem to be a 'large project' desktop agnostic music player/organiser for linux. They all seem to be deeply tied into Gnome or Kde.
My solution, if you want something lightweight, is MPD and Ario. MPD is just your background daemon that looks after managing your library/database, and Ario is a gtk 'frontend' that will let you search and sort your MPD database, and create the playlists to be played with MPD. The beauty of this system is that you do not need a music app to be running to play your music. Just the lightweight MPD daemon. Once a playlist has been loaded, you can close Ario and just let MPD do it's stuff.
I know Xfce has a panel app that lets you control MPD and even launch Ario to change playlists. I'm sure the other desktops will most likely have some sort of panel app too (I have even written a simple little python script that monitors MPD track changes and diplays a notification).
Anyway, just my thoughts on the issue. For more MPD info, see the wiki at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mpd
    Cheers.

  • Changing the application that a file type opens with

I have MSFT Excel and Subethaedit installed...
I want Subethaedit to open all "*.spad" files
I go to "Get Info" then go to "Open with:" then choose Subethaedit
Then I press "Change All...", a dialog pops up and asks if I want to apply the change to all documents of the form "*.spad", and I answer "continue" and then...
It ignores me; it drops Subethaedit from the list of apps to "Open with" and doesn't change the default format.
How do I force the type to change to the app I want? Is there a text-file I can munge somewhere?

  • How to change default application in file context menu

I know you can change the application that opens a file in the file;s info window (command i) and then double clicking the file opens it in that application. However the context menu still shows the same original default application. How to change what is shown as default in context menu?

You can't. You can change the default app in Get Info which will change the first listed app in the context menu to that default app. How the context menu is built is not under user control.

  • Problem with file type... some files have been changed to folders... Help !

    Hello,
I have problem with some files that are located in Library / Quicktime.
I have 7 files in that folder and all are .component files.
3 of them used to look like a lego block :
    DivX Encoder.component
    macam.component
    MayaIFF.component
But today, I have accidentally change them into folders (and I don,t Know how...) So instead of having thoses 3 files with the lego block icon , I have 3 folders and If I click on thoses folder, It open like a standard folder, so I see the "content" folder inside them...
How can I change it back to the .component file type they should be... I know how to change the type of a file, but since they are now folders, there's no "file Type" associated with them (right click / infos)...
    Help !

There are lots of things that are in fact folders, but the Finder treats them as "files"--in the sense that normally when you select one you cannot see the contents of the folder. One way this is done is by the use of certain extensions, for instance .app, .pkg, .mpkg, .bundle and .component all tell the Finder to NOT display the folders as folders. If you do a GetInfo on them and the name is still "whatever.component" and the Kind: Component is still showing, and you haven't noticed any problem with QuickTime, then don't worry about it.
Those are all third party QT components. If they aren't working, you may have to reinstall them from the original source.

  • After installing Acrobat/Reader on Windows 7 or Vista, icons of all applications/file-types change t

After installing Acrobat/Reader on Windows 7 or Vista, icons of all applications/file-types change to Acrobat/Reader icon and double clicking on any icon/file launches Acrobat/Reader (instead of the native application associated to the file type). Is there an easy fix for this problem?

I'm sorry, but I wasn't aware of a native PDF viewer for Windows.
Nonetheless, if you want to change your default PDF application in Windows, you need to right click on any .PDF file, select "Properties",
    then "Change",
then select the program you want to open a PDF with.

  • Changing default open with for file type for all users

    hello
can I change the default app to open a specific file type for all users and not juist for my user?
i am admin for my mac mini.

What applications are offered for open with depends on the application itself informing the system it can open certain files, plus your own custom selections for opening files. Evidently the alternate app you want to use does not claim to be able to open the files you are assigning it. If you have a plist editor and know how to use it you could edit the info.plist file inside the application itself to add the file type you want to the application's declaration of file types it will open. Then restart so the system will read that declaration. I think it would be far easier to simply launch the application and then drop a file you want it to open onto its icon in the Dock.
