Help: computer and program settings mysteriously set to default...

Note: I did not rename my home directory at any point, even by accident.
Sequence of events: restarted Firefox after it crashed, and saw that all my bookmarks were missing. Shortly after, I restarted iTunes, and saw that all my content was gone (the files were still on my hard drive, though). I then restarted my computer, and saw that my desktop files were gone, and that the wallpaper and dock settings were back on default. I still have all my files, but they're not in the same places anymore.
Any idea how/why this happened? How do I fix this? Every solution I've come accross has to do with renaming my home directory, but I'm pretty sure that's not the cause of this...

Hmmm, did anyone else have access to it on that day? It seems it got created when it went missing.
Was it left on that day? Any Animals around?
I'm thinking you should make a new Admin user & move the folders in /Library/Documentation/User Guides And Information.localized/Users/danielmills to the new admin, then use
BatchMod, it's much better/easier than the Finder for recursive Permission changes...

My wife and I each have an apple computer and an iPhone.  Setting them up with the iCloud put us on the same account.  I take a lot of photos on job sites and she takes her own photos we have to scan though each others photos to find our own.  How do I separate the accounts without one of us losing our own stuff?

Decide which device will be changing accounts.  On that device, if you have any photos in photo stream that are not in your camera roll that you want to keep on the device, save them to the camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud.  The device(s) that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On My iDevice.  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.
Finally, to delete any data that you don't want in each account (such as deleting your wife's data from your account, and vice versa) you will have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete it.

I can't help with the scan/print problem. You seem to have done everything I would try.
I don't know if maybe using a registry cleaner would help.

  • Firefox won't load, even after reinstalling 9. This suddenly happened last week. it tells me there is an error loading the page. This only happens on this particular computer and no settings have knowingly been changed

About a week or two ago, Firefox stopped loading. It tells us that the page in unavailable. This only happens on our home computer which is a Dell running Windows XP. I think this happened after we upgraded. Today, I tried reinstalling Firefox and it still tells us that the site is unavailable. (Windows Explorer also tried to block the download). I cannot figure out where to look on the computer for programs that might be blocking access.

I have decided to dedicate this thread to the wonderful errors of Lion OSX. Each time I find a huge problem with Lion I will make note of it here.
Today I discovered a new treasure of doggie poop in Lion. No Save As......
I repeat. No Save As. In text editor I couldn't save the file with a new extension. I finally accomplished this oh so majorly difficult task (because we all know how difficult it should be to save a file with a new extension) by pressing duplicate and then saving a copy of the file with a new extension. Yet then I had to delete the first copy and send it to trash. And of course then I have to secure empty trash because if I have to do this the rest of my mac's life I will be taking up a quarter of percentage of space with duplicate files. So this is the real reason they got rid of Save As: so that it would garble up some extra GB on the ole hard disk.
So about 20 minutes of my time were wasted while doing my homework and studying for an exam because I had to look up "how to save a file with a new extension in  mac Lion" and then wasted time sitting here and ranting on this forum until someone over at Apple wakes up from their OSX-coma.
are you freaking kidding me Apple? I mean REALLY?!!!! who the heck designed this?!!! I want to know. I want his or her name and I want to sit down with them and have a long chat. and then I'd probably splash cold water on their face to wake them up.
I am starting to believe that Apple is Satan.

  • How do I back up my macbook pro information to an external hard drive.  I was told you just plug it in to the computer and because it is set up to work automatically, it should just do it automatically.  However, the clock is just circling top right?

How do I back up informtion on my Macbook pro to an external hard drive?  I was told all you need to do is plug in the hard drive to the computer, and it will back up automatically, which it is set to do.  But all that is happening is the clock a the upper right of the page is revolving and the clock by my vault on the left is revolving, but there is no information as to mega or giga being copied.

  • Which is better for computer and program... sleep or turn off?

When not using, which is better for the program, sleep or turn off the computer and any explanations are welcome...

I advise shutting down rather than sleep. A good shut down often clears up nascent problems, and of course you're saving electricity by not running your machine and also saving those precious MTBF hours on all the mechanical components. Think of the hours it would sleep vs. the number of hours you actually use the machine. Even though sleep consumes less electricity, it still consumes.

  • What are the incoming and outgoing settings to set up freeserve email accounts on ipad2

I have an Ipad 2 and am trying to set up email from an old Freeserve account in the UK, I have set this up and can receieve emails but cant send emails.

After many, many, frustrating hours trying to set this up on my Dad's iPad, I think I have found a solution. Thought I'd share it in case anyone else was still perservering with a freeserve email address.
    It basically involved
    - setting up a pop3 account (Settings/Mail,Contacts, Calendars/Add account/Other/Add mail account) with pop.orangehome.co.uk and smtp.orangehome.co.uk as the incoming and outgoing settings
    - letting it try to 'verify' those settings (which will probably fail)
    - if asked 'Do you want to try without SSL' (or similar), click no
    - Dismiss the window which says something like 'this account may not be able to send or receive emails' and save the settings as they are.
    - Go back into the account you have just set up and there should be some more settings to fiddle with - 'SMTP' and 'Advanced'.
    - In 'Advanced', switch 'Use SSL' to off and change the Server port to 110, then go back to the previous screen
    - Click on SMTP. It will probably show the primary server as smtp.orangehome.co.uk. After fiddling around with the settings for ages I decided to see what would happen if I used a different smtp server. I had previously set up a gmail account, so I tried smtp.gmail.com. For the record, this already had my email address as the user name, my gmail password, SSL on, Authenticaion as password and port as 587. Low and behold - it worked. I'm no expert but I assume this just means it is using the gmail 'route' to send an email rather than the freeserve/orange/EE route.
If you haven't got a gmail account to use, it might be worth setting one up just for this purpose.

  • My automatic sign-in and location (eg for news and weather) details do not stick, despite all history and cookie settings being set never to clear, unlike with Firefox 3x..

I can set location on www.bbc.co.uk for local news and weather but details are no longer retained between browsing sessions. I have checked the history and cookie settings and they are not supposed to clear anything. A similar problem exists with a site where I want to stay signed in so that I am automatically recognised in a new browsing session; this does not work. These problems seem specific to Firefox 4 because they did not exist with Fx 3, using the same settings. I have also checked add-ons; disabling them makes no difference.

  • REstore computer and iTunes settings

I am using iTunes 6.0 and have many podcasts ( audio and video ) and have gone through all 10,000 of my mp3s and check marked the ones I want to be transferred to my 5g 60GB iPod.
I have to REDO my computer and plan to format it completely.
    Is there a way to:
    - Backup my options in iTUne so I can just resotre them after Im done reformatting
    - Backup the checked mp3s I have and restore later
    - Backup my subscribed podcasts ( not too important since I can just write them down, resubscribe, and download again )
    Thanks guys

Well, if the songs are all safely in a different place, the backup procdure is quite simple:
    Go to My Documents\My Music\iTunes.
    Back up the entire folder.
When you're done restoring your computer, reinstall iTunes and restore the 'itunes' folder to My Music.
Start iTunes, everything should be as you left it.

  • Computer / All Program Settings were reset, help ?

I turned my macbook off at school, and when I turned it back on at home 20 minutes later I noticed my desktop background changed to the default, among closer inspection everything went back to default... dashboard, dock all my photoshop printing settings, I had to re sign the agreement in itunes and move all my songs back into it. everything...but all my files were still on the computer, but in weird places it seemed, the Music and Photos were empty but there were new folders in some weird place on my harddrive that had all the stuff that was originally in them.. I'm confused and want to know if this has happened to anyone else, and if so, if it happened more than once.

    Hi Nick,
Did you rename your Home Directory (the Users folder with the House icon)? If you did, the following will guide you step by step on how to get everything back again:

  • I updated my Apple TV to 5.3 and now it doesn't work. It only shows a computer and General settings to choose from. Can someone please help me.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
That tells you it's not connected to the internet properly.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    Restart your router.
Reset the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings)
Restore the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Restore)

  • Email hyperlinks don't open an Outlook new mail window (using Windows 7 and Outlook 2007 is set as Default Program, but still doesn't work).

I've read the community discussions of this issue and did try the "default program" solution, but it hasn't worked. Also noted a discussion about proxy settings (?), but couldn't find instructions and didn't understand what was posted.

    Hi,
You can try to change the hyperlink option in the Windows '''Control Panel''' > '''Default Programs''' > '''Associate a file type or protocol with a program'''; look for '''.url''' > '''Change Program''' > select or '''Browse''' and choose Firefox. If this fails then you may have to find the cause of "There are restrictions in place on this computer" message and remedy it. Two likely possibilities are someone put the restriction (IT admin??), or a virus or malicious program did it.

  • Thick, horizontal lines appear in both source and program viewer footage set to less than 100% ...

    Can anyone help?
This has suddenly started across all projects, including those I have been working on for ages with no issues.  Everything else seems to be exactly the same as ever in every other application, only PP is affected.  The footage is all progressive (I rarely encounter interlaced nowadays), prores HQ 25fps, usually 1080 but also 720.  Output to the monitor, via MXO2 mini is fine and has not changed at all.  I can't think of any updates recently, certainly not in the past week, when this started.
It's really wierd and clearly wrong, but I can't begin to work out how to fix it, having exhausted all my standard fixes (settings in app, OS, hardware etc all checked and rechecked.  Reboots done - all to no effect).
    My system is:
    MacPro 5,1 6-core 3.33GHz
    12GB RAM
    GTX285 Mac GPU - CUDA 5.0.45, GPU driver 1.3.4.0 (295.00.05f03)
    OSX 10.7.5
    PP CS 6.0.2
MXO2 mini - latest drivers etc
    Any thoughts, much appreciated!
    Thanks
    Dominic

Well, I seem to have fixed it but none the wiser for why I had this problem.
Fixed it by upgrading my OS to OSX 10.8.3 (always a nerve trembling experience), after cloning my boot drive etc.  Then I updated CUDA to the latest version, reinstalled my Matrox drivers and crossed my fingers!  Happily, everything seems to be fine now.  I can only think that the problem was, maybe, something to do with CUDA, as the only time I ever had an issue was using PP and playback was at less than 100% scale.
