Help! Deleting Photos in Aperature also deleted in iPhoto

I have recently started using Aperture and I want to use it with my "professional" photos and continue to use iPhoto for my "personal" photos. I already had a lot of professional photos in iPhoto, so I decided that the easiest way to bring the ones I needed into Aperture was to import all of my iPhoto libraries into Aperture, and then delete the unnecessary personal photos. At this point I don't remember if I decided to store the files "in the Aperture Library" or "in their current location".
After importing I deleted a few photos and then opened iPhoto to make sure those photos were still safe in the iPhoto library. Seeing the thumbnails for the images, I was fooled into thinking that the image was still in my iPhoto library. So off I went for several days deleting and organizing photos. About 4,000 deleted (and trash emptied) photos later, I realized my error, that I had been in fact deleting photos from both my Aperture library AND my iPhoto library.
So, what is the easiest way to get my photos back? I'm assuming I need some sort of un-erase software, any recommendations? Also, is there an easy way to sort out the mess of files I will be un-erasing or will I have to manually look at all of them and figure out which iPhoto library (I have one for each year) they belong in?

What version of iPhoto do you have?
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
Or restore from your back up. You have a back up, of course.

  • How can I tell whether or not a photo I delete from iPhone will also be deleted from iPhoto on my Mac?

I would like to download the new iOS, however when I go to do that, a message tells me that I cannot because I need 4.6 GB of storage in order to install it. I only currently have 864 MB of storage available on my 16 GB iPhone 5s.
The storage problem would be fairly easy to solve through deleting photos and/or videos, as the Photos & Camera app shows a current usage of 5.7 GB. I am perfectly comfortable deleting photos off my iPhone if I know that they will remain in iPhoto on my Mac. However, when I select photos to delete, the phone warns me that the photo(s) will also be deleted from Photo Stream on all my devices. I tested this with some photos I didn't care about (whether or not they got permanently deleted from all devices), and it is perplexing, because even though the iPhone warned me that the photos would be deleted on other devices, they have not deleted out of iPhoto on my Mac. I even Quit iPhoto and re-started it, but the photos are still there. Why would the iPhone claim that the photos would be deleted from other devices, but yet clearly the photos are not being deleted from my other device? This leaves me confused and unsure.
Meanwhile, if I select a bunch of photos then click Delete, the phone warns me that SOME photos will also be deleted from Photo Stream on all my devices.
I am very annoyed by the ambiguity of the word "some," and not being able to know for sure whether or not photos I delete off my iPhone will still remain in iPhoto on my Mac.
I would just like a really clear answer if possible: currently all my iPhone photos are showing up in iPhoto on my Mac. If I delete photos off of my iPhone, will they or won't they be deleted from iPhoto on my Mac?
    Thanks if anybody can help.

If the Photos have been moved into the Library (Events, Photos, Faces, Places) in iPhoto on your Mac (either because you did it manually or as a result of iPhoto > Preferences > iCloud > Automatic Import being on) then nothing you do on the phone will delete them from iPhoto on your Mac.
If the Photos are ONLY in the Shared - iCloud section of iPhoto then you risk losing them as deleting them from Photo Stream will delete them from there.

  • HT201272 Cannot download previously deleted app iphoto. Other deleted apps re install exactly as manual says. Also, how can I delete unwanted photos from "photos" app, which were brought in via Dropbox? Ipad Air wi fi running ios 7 (my first apple product

New to Apple, having fun with ipad Air, but geting frustrated with its weird ways.
Deleted the iphoto app to clear out photos (yes, really). Now cannot download it again. Other deleted apps download exactly as the manual says but not iphoto. Can anyone suggest how to fix please? Also, cannot delete test photos from"photos" app, brought in from Dropbox. Can anyone tell me how to do this please?
    All help gratefully received.

You should be able to redownload it via the Purchased tab in the App Store app on your iPad - if it's not showing there (you haven't changed countries since buying the app ?) then check to see if it's hidden : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4919
For the photos, if they are in the Camera Roll album in the Photos app then you can either delete them via the trashcan icon in the bottom right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the Select button top right in thumbnail view.

Have a look at your import setting specifically Store Files:
Make sure it is set to where you want the originals to go.

  • IPhoto '08: If I delete a photo in the photo library it also deletes it from the album it's in. Why?

iPhoto '08: If I delete a photo in the photo library it also deletes it from the album it's in. Why? How do I stop that?

    1. Forget your goal. There is no way to have a Photo in iPhoto that's not in the Library. Can't be done. Impossible.
    2. Events are the Library. They are a view of the photos in the Library based on date taken, that's all. Every photo in iPhoto is in the Library, and as Events are also a view of the Library, every photo is in an Event. So, you can't "take a library photo and put it in an Event". It's already in an Event.
    3. I'm guessing that what you are calling the Library is the Photos view? That's the Library viewed not broken up by dates. But Photos and Events are two views of the same thing - two doors into the same room, as it were.

  • If I delete a photo on my iPhone will it also delete from the photo stream on my mac in iPhoto?

I have run out of memory on my iPhone. I want to delete some photos on my iPhone but I want to make sure they will stay on my Macbook in photo stream.

If you have your iPhoto library set to automatically import Photo Stream photos
they will not be removed from the library (but will from the  Photo Stream) when deleted from the iPhone).  If you don't have the Autokmatic Import checked the select the Photo Stream photos in your LIbrary and drag them onto the Events icon in the left hand pane to import them.  Then you can delete from your iPhone.

  • Photos deleted by iPhoto via subfolders- now they can not be found

I deleted photos in various folders after they were put there by iphoto when the folder was created. I deleted the photos after reading iphoto WILL NOT permantly delete photos from the main library.
The photos are stored on a large 3T hard drive. Sometimes it is hare to even locate files via finder- I do not know why the spinning wheel just spins forever and wont open the folder.
Anyway- if there is a series of phtos taken DSC001, DSC002 etc all the way to DSC009.
so now that I have deleted photos in a sub folder- they do not show in the main PHOTO library. They also do not show in finder when I perform a search.
So first I'd like to locate and put my iphoto library as it was. I have already done all a couple complete "rebuilds" via the iphoto option. Nothing has changed- photos still missing.
After I hopefully find my missing photos (of my childred etc)  I'd like to move all photos to aperature.
So- what is the best way to move the entire library to apperature and set it up to manage my photos from here on out?
What measures do I have to take to protect my photos in the future from losing them in aperature?
Thanks so much for any help.
    Peace-
    Jeff
    iphoto11 is being used

That view is the Photos mode with Event names set to be viewed. It's viewing the same photos that you would be seeing in the Event mode.
Any photos in that window that are moved to the iPhoto trash and the trash bin emptied via the iPhoto ➙ Empty iPhoto Trash menu option will be removed from the library and moved to the Trash bin in the Dock. To remove from the hard drive one must also empty the Trash bin in the Dock.
If you've deleted from the Photos mode and emptied both the iPhoto and Dock Trash bins the photos are gone.
You're best bet is to restore the library from a backup make just prior to the deletions.
Deleting Photos from an iPhoto Library
1 - from an Event or from the Photos mode: select the photo(s) and use the Delete key to move the photos to the trash bin. Then empty the iPhoto Trash bin as follows:
2 - from an album, smart album, book, slideshow, card, etc.: select the photo(s) and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move the photos to the trash bin.  Then empty the trash bin as above.
NOTE: deleting a photo from an album, slideshow, book, etc., with only the Delete key only deletes that photo from that item. Deleting a photo from an Event deletes ALL occurences of that photo in the library.

  • Can I delete photos from my SD card in iPhoto?

I love iPhoto but i can't get one thing figured out. I want to delete photos from my SD card within iPhoto. I don't want to have to import things before deleting them. I don't like deleting them as I import because I worry about losing the pictures. So I like to import, back up on CD, and would then (and only then!) like to delete the ones I have imported & backed up from the camera.
I know I can do this manually in Finder but I would prefer to do it in iPhoto because it's easier, plus that way I can see which photos I'm deleting. I'm sure there is a way but it won't let me drag the photos to the trash.
I'm frustrated and I hope someone can help! Thanks in advance.

Aloha, I have found the easiest way to do what you are after is to set up Image Capture (located in your applications folder) to open when a camera/card is connected. You then have the option to view the photos, delete any you don't want and import them to iPhoto, or your desktop. I have a specific folder named downloaded pics which I send them to. You also have the option for Image Capture to erase card when finished importing. It is an extra step, but I have found it very helpful for not wasting space and not importing everything only to have to delete photos later. Hope this helps. JB

  • Am I able to delete the "migrated photo library" after I convert from iPhoto to Photos?

I've recently converted to the new Photos app in OSX and have noticed there is a large library with the iPhotos library logo (52.1Gb). I'm wondering if I can safely delete this without losing any pictures from my Photos library. or if not, what is its purpose and why is it so large?
Here are some screenshots of an OmniDiskSweeper sweep of my home drive and of finder:
Any help is greatly appreciated as I have very limited disk space!

I have! And it seems that iPod cache is quite large. I think I'll go ahead and delete that and see if it reduces in size if I resync my device (I have reduced the amount of pictures I sync)
I have also deleted some files and events since trasferring to Photos (in an attempt to clear disk space). Would those changes reflect in the iPhoto library or is that a snapshot of my iPhoto library at the time of trasfer? I'm satisfied with my Photos library, so I may go ahead and delete the iPhoto one since its larger (I also have a backup on a drive of the full library before deleting)
Here is the memory distribution in both libraries:

  • Photos on iPad and iPhone as Events that i have already deleted in iPhoto and can't find out how to delete?!

Photos on iPad and iPhone as Events that i have already deleted in iPhoto and can't find out how to delete?!

I had an album on my iPad that didn't have a delete option. I was able to finally remove everything by connecting the iPad to iTunes and going to the Photos tab. Select sync photos. It will ask you if you want to replace all photo on iPad with sync photos. Apply the setting and then un-sync photo again. It will then remove all photos on iPad starting with a clean slate.
Be sure to backup all your photos before doing this. Hope that helps.

  • Photos not deleting in iPhoto

Photos are not deleting in iPhoto library. When I select a photo and hit delete they photo does not delete and the next photo is highlighted. I've tried to drag photos to the iPhoto trash but that doesn't work either. I was having similar problems when working in the iPhoto library on my Air and had to rebuild the library/thumbnails. It also will not merge two Events together. This was the same problem I had before I rebuilt the library. This worked for a little (an hour) while but am now having the same issues. I am syncronizing my libraries with Chronosync but haven't ran into this problem before. I'm using iPhoto 9.

I am in the process of organizing all my photos (around 24,000), starting to name Faces, merging Events, rating photos, and deleting photos. After I work a while I run into this problem above.

I am trying to delete the photos on my SD card through iphoto but can't seem to find a delete button and it won't let me drag the photo to the trash can... Can anyone help me?

You can't.  Use Image Capture instead.
It's located in your Applications folder.

  • I have deleted the iphoto library and lost my photo's......

i have deleted the iphoto library and cleared my trash and now all my photo's are gone. I have bought software to retrieve deleted data but not sure what file I am looking for. Can anybody help?

best solution is to restore yoru backup form before you made this error - that is the reason you must always have a good backup
If you don't you should start backing up immediately
to use the photos you recovered you look for photos (typically they have a .jpg or .jpeg extention to the name - and select the largest version  of each photo and import it into iPhoto
Note that for not much more that the cost of the data recovery software you could have had an extrnal hard drive and been running TimeMachine so none of this would be required
