Help !! Format method
I wrote a method for a format tool which adjusts the indentation according to Java rules. The first line has zero indentation (leading spaces are removed, if necessary). Indentation for subsequent lines is increased by four spaces for each open brace, '{', encountered, and decreased by four spaces for each close brace, '}'. Braces are not moved from one line to another; only indentation is adjusted.
It is possible for the indentation count to become negative. Lines with "negative indentation" should not, of course, be indented, but the count should be maintained so that subsequent lines can be indented correctly.
i messed up, how to fix it?
thanks

Need help in the String Format method
really need help in string.Format method. I would like to show the s in two digit numbers.
for example:
if s is below 10 then display *0s*
the expecting result is 01,02,03.. 09,10,11....
I tried this method, somehow i got the errors msg. pls advise. thx.
public void setDisplay(String s) {
String tmpSS=String.format("%02d",s);
this.ss.setText(tmpSS);
Edited by: bluesailormoon on May 19, 2008 10:30 AMApparently, you expect the string to consist of one or two digits. If that's true, you could do this:String tmpSS = (s.length() == 1) ? ("0" + s) : s; or this: String tmpSS = String.format("%02d", Integer.parseInt(s));

Hi:
Can someone help me debug and correct following program?
The error message I receive is Exception in thread "main" java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException:
String index out of range: 1
at java.lang.String.charAt(String.java, Compiled Code)
at RemoveDuplicates.key(RemoveDuplicates.java, Compiled Code)
at RemoveDuplicates.main(RemoveDuplicates.java:12)
The code is as follows:
class RemoveDuplicates
public static void main(String args[])
String keyword = args[0];
System.out.println(key(keyword));
public static String key(String keyword)
{String temp = "";
for(int i = keyword.length()-1; i > -1 ; i--)
if(i == keyword.indexOf(keyword.charAt(i)))
temp = keyword.charAt(i)+ temp;
keyword = temp;
return keyword;
If I change the code as follows it will run without error but I need to put the code in a method as part of a larger program.
class RemoveDuplicates
public static void main(String args[])
String temp = "";
String keyword = args[0];
for(int i = keyword.length()-1; i > -1 ; i--)
if(i == keyword.indexOf(keyword.charAt(i)))
temp = keyword.charAt(i)+temp;
keyword = temp;
System.out.println(keyword);
Here's your method corrected - albeit with some renamed variables, a variable addition and some reformatting...
public static String removeDuplicates(String s)
String temp = "";
for(int i = s.length()-1; i >= 0 ; i--)
char c = s.charAt(i);
if(i == s.indexOf(c))
temp = c + temp;
return temp;
}The only functional change is the removal of the line in the if statement body of "s = temp"... This would cause the StringIndexOutOfBounds and would also lose the as yet unprocessed characters.
Here also is a version which trades off a higher memory usage to avoid creating a lot of Strings and rescanning the original String...
public static String removeDuplicates(String s)
boolean[] foundChars = new boolean[Character.MAX_VALUE+1];
StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer(s.length());
for(int i = 0, j = s.length(); i < j; i++)
char c = s.charAt(i);
if(!foundChars[c])
foundChars[c] = true;
sb.append(c);
return sb.toString();
}Hopefully these both work...

So What Now with Help Formats ???
Well... the launch of Vista and the death of Winhelp has
really shafted us... and I'm sure a lot of others too. Current
situation as I understand it is :
1) Winhelp is dead.
2) HTML Help is supported but is functionally inferior in the
following ways :
- Window position cannot be specified as a percentage of the
screen (pixels only) which is awkward for secondary windows as we
need to support everything from 1024x768 to 1920x1280.
- Context sensitive help support is dreadful compared to
winhelp - no formatted text, bullets, graphics, hyperlinks, etc...
- Microsoft refuse to allow CHM files to be launched over a
network so a server install is out (without a naughty registry
hack).
3) Webhelp is supported but rumoured to be on the way out in
terms of Robohelp support. Is this true ? Its also extremely clunky
to ship with software due to number of files and, AFAICS, offers no
context sensitive help functionality. I guess we could get round
the former by using .MHT files but reasonable support for context
sensitive help is a must.
4) The Windows Vista Help directory seems to use 'h1s' files.
What on earth is this ? For sure Vista has nicely formatted Context
Sensitive Help but how ? Is this the new, much publicised MS Help
format ?
Basically, we need a sensible single file help system for the
app and context sensitive help with hyperlinks & formatting.
Anybody have suggestions on what the trend is here - is there even
a single format solution for what must be a common applications
requirement ?
Are Adobe planning their own Winhelp support now that MS have
ditched it ?
Are MS planning a new Help System ?
Thanks,
Iain.
I find it fascinating that Microsoft distributes winhelp.exe
(16-bit
WinHelp) as part of Vista but stubbornly refuses to
distribute winhlp32.exe
(32-bit WinHelp). Apparently Microsoft still needs/wants to
use WinHelp
popups so they're keeping the 16-bit WinHelp executable as
part of Vista.
So now here's my question... Robohelp has its own .dll
(RoboEx32.dll) that
it allows us to distribute. My understanding is that this is
what allows us
to have the tripane view. Having been mostly away from help
development for
the last several years but about to enter the fray again,
what happens if I
develop a RoboHelp Help2000 project and load project.hlp,
project.cnt and
the RoboHelp .dll file onto a Vista machine (which only has
winhelp.exe)??
Does this work?
Thanks
Mike

Web vs Win vs Win Help formats
right now we want to create the classic chm file,
but when would we want to create the other Help file formats? our
application runs on Won OS, including Vista, the RH help is not
clear about this
Hi,
Yes, definitely HTML Help in preference to WinHelp. In fact,
the WinHelp engine (winhlp32.exe) doesn't even ship with Vista and
Windows Server 2008, although anyone wanting to view .hlp files can
still get it from the Microsoft Download Center. Here is a
Microsoft Knowledge Base article on the subject:
"The Windows Help (WinHlp32.exe) program is no longer
included in Windows operating systems starting with Windows Vista"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607
WinHelp 2000 is a dressed-up version of WinHelp that the
makers of RoboHelp introduced in the very early days of HTML Help,
at a time when not all Windows computers were equipped with the
components required to view HTML Help files. The idea was to
deliver something that looked roughly like HTML Help but had a more
readily achievable set of system requirements. This format is still
essentially WinHelp, however, so it suffers from the same issues as
far as running on Vista is concerned.
For the time being, Microsoft continues to recommend HTML
Help as the most appropriate help format for Windows applications.

private String dateTimeFormat(Long time) {
SimpleDateFormat sf = new SimpleDateFormat("dd/MM/yyyy HH:mm:ss");
if (time != null) {
Date date = new Date(time);
return sf.format(date);
return null;
}Above function is returning date string as ??/??/???? ??:??:?? on particular system(LINUX-RHEL4). Its Default Locale is en_US.
What would be the problem ?

I want to know in which exceptional cases SimpleDateFormat format() method returns such (??/??/????) a string ?As I said, it doesn't (If I'm correct). It's more likely that you have an invalid encoding specified somewhere. What happens if you print the value into a log?
Ok here is my problem, the drive got corrupted (my fault, the drive was getting scanned and it lost power) now i hade hopes of restoring it, but that fell through (nothing important was on it) so now i try to format the drive and i get an input and out put error, then i try to partion it, but that also fails.....so then i connected it to my windows and to access the drive i have to go through disk manager and the partion and the format fails...this also happens to another drive of mine that was corrupted form another issue......
i have giiven u every piece of inforamtion i have, please help me, also i want all information on the enclousre, and azny update drivers for it, i hope i have given enough information
Here is the EXACT drive in question.

The problem of losing power when running the drive, is that the needle may scratch part of the drive as it lands on the platter. Sufficient power may pick it up, but it may have permanently damaged the drive. I would get the drive itself replaced.
A format which fails is a sign of a hard drive failure.
API Help -- Extract method results in Catstrophic failure!
Hi all,
We're trying to implement the HFM api to pull data out into a CSV. When we run HsvData.Extract, the call returns an exception:
Catastrophic failure (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8000FFFF (E_UNEXPECTED))
I'm not sure what this means and I can't find any help on the 'net. Our extract call looks like:
hsvLoad.Extract(dataFilePath, logFilePath, settings);
settings is an object array that looks like this before we call Extract:
settings {object[20]}
[0] 2
[1] ";"
[2] "LogFile.log"
[3] false
[4] false
[5] false
[6] 1
[7] 2009
[8] int[12] //selected periods, 67108864 - 67108875 (Jan - Dec)
[9] int[2] // selected entities, 0 and 1
[10] int[1] //selected parents, 0
[11] int[4] //selected accounts 0 - 3
[12] int[0]
[13] int[0]
[14] int[0]
[15] int[0]
[16] int[0]
[17] int[0]
[18] false
[19] false
items 12 - 19 are default, we don't change them. The data file is empty and the log file says "0 records extracted". If I try to Extract from the UI selecting the same items (accounts, years, application, etc), I get the full results.
Can anyone tell me what the Catastrophic failure means? Are some of our settings mapped wrong? I can post additional code if that helps.
Thanks,
Shawn

Please help with methods!
hello
i have a problem that i have been working on for a few days now. i have just started to learn about methods and how to use them. my first attempt has met with a few problems however. i was to make a calculator with a menu that did the four basic math operations. i have done that and the program is working perfectly. the only trouble is that i was to have 7 methods and i only have 6. this is how i was supposed to split it up
4 for operations
1 for number prompt and input
1 for menu
1 for output of results
i am at a lost for how to put the outputs in ONE method. can anyone please help me. i realize i am using an unfamiliar console, but ican send it to you if you contact me. then you can test it out here is the program:

i am at a lost for how to put the outputs in ONE method. can anyone please help me.You can solve a problem in many ways, and when you design a class the number of methods used may vary from solution to solution. But it seems likely in this case that your teacher expected the operations to be:
4 for operationsSo, after getting two numbers from the user, perform the operation and return the result. Note that this means that the operation methods would take TWO parameters, not three as you've been doing.
1 for number prompt and inputOK. This would not take a number as a parameter, so you've done that wrong.
1 for menuYou haven't done that part yet. You've stuck that stuff into the main method. You're probably supposed to create seven methods in addition to the main method.
1 for output of resultsSo, print the number that's the result of the operation. This is the number that's been returned by the operation, which you're ignoring in your code.
Of course, if you're confused about the assignment, you should ask your teacher, not here. We can't read your teacher's mind. Like I said there are lots of ways to solve a problem and they might not all be the same way your teacher had in mind.
You seem to be confused about the whole idea of functions and return values. If you want a method to act as a function -- that is, to operate on its arguments and return a result without side effects -- then you don't pass the result value as a variable. You do this:
double result = someOperation(arg1, arg2);and not this, as you have been doing:
double result = someOperation(arg1, arg2, result);The latter case makes no sense. The method only gets a copy of "result" when the method is called, so any changes to it are lost except for what it returns. Do it like the former example above.
Need help formatting external hard drive for OS 10.5.8.
My older 2007 iMac is running on OS 10.5.8. I purchaed Snow Lepoard but was told to back up years of music and pictures. I bought an external hard drive that is compatible with Mac OS 10.6. How do I format the external hard drive to accept OS 10.5.8.? Showing error code -43....? HELP PLEASE!
How is the current EHD formatted?
PHP need help formating date, please.
I am working on my first database page using repeating fields
and a
connection to MySQL, and actually have it working! Yay!
Now I have a formatting problem, and would appreciate a bit
of help.
The first column of the repeating field is a date field,
which is stored
as a date type in mysql, and shows up in my table as
2008-03-12 (which
is how it was entered into the table). I would like to change
the
display to March 12, 2008. I have tried using the date
function, but
without success. The text that php is putting in the cell is
"2008-03-12", which I am guessing is not a valid timestamp. I
am also
guessing that this is why I get a date in 1969 when I try
this...
The page is here:
http://www.verodelmar.com/agendas.php
and the source is here:
http://www.verodelmar.com/agendas.txt
Thanks to anyone that takes the time to look!

The former I think I understand.
The latter I have printed out and will look at some more.
Actually in
theory I understand, but how to do that in my control panel
is what I
need to look at.
Thanks!

Hello,
My program send a table to a method that save table values in disk ".doc", there is a way to format some strings to be bold in the
end file??
Here is the Code:
import java.io.*;
import javax.swing.*;
public class test{
public test( JTable table ){
String out = "";
for ( int i = 0 ; i < table.getRowCount(); i++ )
for( int j = 0 ; j < 5 ; j ++ ){
out += table.getValueAt( i , j );
if( j == 0 )
out += " - ";
else
out += " ";
if( ( j + 1 ) % 5 == 0 )
out += "\n";
FileOutputStream fOut = null;
try{
JFileChooser fc = new JFileChooser( );
fc.setFileSelectionMode( JFileChooser.FILES_ONLY );
fc.showSaveDialog( null );
File file = fc.getSelectedFile();
fOut = new FileOutputStream( file.getPath( ), true);
fOut.write( ( out ).getBytes( ) );
fOut.flush( );
fOut.close( );
catch (Exception e){
e.printStackTrace();
}
No. Or more specifically, if you are writing a text file (such as ASCII), then you cannot.

Help accessing methods in classes load with forName()
Hi all,
I am dynamically loading classes at runtime by using Class.forName() and .newInstance(). Is there any way I can access the methods of those classes after they are dynamically loaded? It doesnt seem that they are available for use.
Any help would be appreciated.
Ryan
To clarify, are you asking how to invoke a method on an Object without knowing its class? In any case you should use the reflection api that are avaliable.
Ex: cl = Class.forName(); Method[] methods = cl.getMethods(); for(int i = methods.length; i-- > 0;) System.out.println(methods[i-1].getName());
or
methods[i-1].invoke(cl.newInstance(), new Object[]{});
None scrolling header in CHM help format
Hi there.
I'm hoping someone might be able to help me with another query i've got.
I'm creating a help file in a CHM format.
I've seen some other help files in the same format, and they have a header that is unique to each page, that doesn't scroll with the rest of the content.
In the header, I would include the page title, and probably the breadcrumbs.
How can I achieve this?
Many thanks in advance,
Craig
Hi there
Yep, I'd avoid using that in a header for the very reasons you have discovered.
Perhaps add it to the top of each topic but NOT in the header proper. Also, I'm assuming you are using a Field for this. You will want to ensure you clear the "auto-update" option. If you don't, the topic will automatically update if you just open it to view it and make no changes.
Cheers... Rick
