Help: iMac runs Sloooooowwwww now Leopard is installed

Hi all you Apple wizz-kids. Hope you can help me. I bought in 2005 an iMac G5 (the white flat screen one but not with the eyesight built in). When I bought it I upgraded it to 1gb ram so assume that the 'spare slot' that comes with the mac has a 512MB ram chip in it.
I installed Leopard last week - had some issues and some programs crashed so installed again and all programs run fine now - but INCREDIBLY SLOW!!!! So cross with myself now.
My question is - do I need to revert to Tiger? Or can I make Leopard work faster by upping the Ram to a 1GB or 2GB chip to replace the one I have currently in the slot.
I have a 1 x 1.8GHz G5 17" display, 80Gb HD, Bluetooth wireless keyboard & mouse and I love it to pieces and am so gutted it is running so slow. WHat have I done wrong? Leopard stated it would be compatible with my mac..

Hi nosha,
welcome to Discussions!
Yes, Leopard is compatible with your Mac and should run as quickly as Tiger.
Please try the following:
) insert your Leopard DVD
) restart with the C key depressed
) now that your Mac runs booted from the Leopard DVD, follow the normal Mac OS X installation process
) as soon as it appears, do not go on (re)installing Leopard, open Utilities menu and click Disk Utility
) run Disk Utility > First Aid > repair Disk
) run it again and again if it finds problems, until you get a "no problems found" in green letters
) restart your Mac
) open the Disk Utility that's in your Mac's Utilities folder
) run DU > First Aid > Repair Permissions
Does it run faster now?
After this,
) open Software Update in Apple menu
) download and install updates
) Repair Permissions again.
Now after this very basic troubleshooting start, let us know how it goes?

  • After software update for Lexmark printer, cannot print document as a file is missing. My iMac runs with Snow Leopard.

I have a Lexmark 3500 - 4500 series printer connected to my iMac via USB (as my iMac won't do the printing wirelessly. My iMac runs with Mac OS X, Snow Leopard, Version 10.6.8.
A few days ago, there were several software updates that I have installed as there was mention that they were for Mac OS X Lion.
Today, I tried to print a document, and it failed. The error message was: "Missing component: /Library/Printers/Lexmark/Drivers/.Resources/3500-4500 Series Color 2.lut".
I have re-installed the software from Lexmark without success.
Has anyone had a similar issue who can advise me, please?
    Thank you.
    Philippe

Have you tried installing the Lexmark software from the Apple site:
Lexmark Printer Drivers v2.4 for Mac OS X v10.6
You are running 10.6 which the above link is for, maybe Lion (10.7) doesn't need everything that 10.6 does. Try re-installing using the above link.

  • Our imac runs osx snow leopard but it cant find the hard drive or it is corrupt, is it possible to reboot it with osx lion?

our imac recently displayed the white screen and flashing file icon with a question mark on it, it runs osx snow leopard but i dont have the installation disc, can i reboot it off the osx lion disc? or do i need to buy the snow leopard disc and reboot it off that first.  thanks for your help in advance!

Yes you can. If the iMac meets the system requirements for Lion then you can boot it off the Lion disc (which is actually a USB drive, unless you download and burn it yourself).

  • HELP... Mac Leopard Server Install

    Hi,
I did a clean install of Leopard server on a Mac Pro. When I open the server preferences pane, it "grinds" away for a while and then finally displays the services, but very slow... The same when opening server admin tools. It sees a server but takes a long time to display the information.
The only thing that is a bit odd to this newbie (very newbie) is that during the setup process I used office.companyname.com as the primary DNS. But the sever host name is Company-Name-Sever.local not sure if that means anything to you guys...
When I try to set up a macbook pro to the server it displays office.companyname.com, which doesn't work with the password. So I enter Company-Name-Sever.local which does work with the password, but takes a long time to show the services available, and the list doesn't include all the services that users is assigned....
    What's up??
    Many Thanks!!

    Hi.
You do need (and Apple does not emphasize this enough), working forward and reverse DNS for OS X Server. It need not be on your OS X Server, but it is needed.
To change the server's FQDN after-the-fact, you need to use changeip in the terminal.
    enter: man changeip
    for more info.
Please, be very, very careful if you are new to DNS and your machine is on a publicly reachable IP !
If that is the case, please hire a demonstrably knowledgeable professional to help with your DNS. For example, have your ISP host your DNS. It It's not something you should ever "play" with outside of anything but a private network and with zone transfers disabled unless you know what you're doing.
For example, please read the whole thread,
    http://lists.apple.com/archives/macos-x-server/2008/Jan/msg00198.html

  • Need Help Setting up Hosts File (Leopard Clean Install)

Over the weekend, I did a clean install of a retail copy of Leopard. Yes I wiped my entire hard drive and re-installed. Today at work I need to configure a series of host file entries so my computer can recognize certain computers in my domain by name instead of by IP. I did a quick look for Netinfo Manager in Utilities and found it is not there. Where in Leopard do you go to make the Host file entries.
I know this is a newbie question, but thanks in advance.
    COlliff

You can go straight to the file and amend
In Finder select Go to Folder and type /etc
With TextEdit or similar you can add additional entries.

When trying to install Adobe Acrobat 11 Pro on my iMac running 10.9.4, the install will not finish and hangs when installer indicates "running package scripts". Any ideas on how to resolve?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Select
              /var/log ▹ install.log
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. The contents of the log will appear on the right. Each log message begins with a timestamp. Select the messages from the time of the last installation or update attempt. If you're not sure when that was, click the Clear Display button in the toolbar of the Console window and then try the installation again. Select the new messages that appear. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
☞ If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
☞ Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
☞ Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. You may need to use a text editor with search and replace, such as TextEdit.

  • Running OS X Leopard 10.5.8, I want to upgrade to OS X Lion, do I have to first update to Snow Leopard?

I have an iMac running OS X Leopard 10.5.8, I want to upgrade to OS X Lion, do I have to first update to Snow Leopard? And is it worth upgrading to Lion or should I wait some time?
    Thanks for your time!
    -JX

Yes you must first update to Snow Leopard if you plan on installing Lion. Apple is very clear about that in the Lion's Tech Spec's that say:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
I like Lion quite a bit and have been using it for several months now. I've found it pretty stable, of course I don't use all of it's features however I really like the additional swipe features however you need a Magic TrackPad to take full advantage of those. However other features like Launchpad I don't have any really appreciation for because I've used OS X for several years now. However if someone is considering their first Mac after using an iPhone, iPad or other IOS device they would appreciate Launchpad.

  • I have an imac running on 10.5.8 and I want to upgrade to 10.6

I have an iMac running OS X leopard 10.5.8 and I want to upgrade to OS X Lion. I know I have to upgrade to 10.6 Leopard first but I cant find it.
Can someone pls send me the links for the upgrades I need to do in order to upgrade to OS X 10.7.2 Lion

First you need to check that your current Mac meets the System Requirements for Both Snow Leopard and Lion...
    Snow Leopard Specs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
    Lion Specs:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html
If it does... then you need to Purchase and Install Snow Leopard
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
And then Purchase and Install Lion...

  • I cannot upgrade my iMac 2009 to snow leopard (it was deleted by mistake) now is running 10.5.8, the snow leopard dvd is not installing and the computer keeps crashing..If anyone have an answer, PLEASE Help me.

I have a 2009 iMac 4,1  2GHz intel Core duo it says here I have 1GB of memory. I had it running on snow leopard 10.6.8 I still have the SN software that i bought to made the upgrade. Had some guest staying at my place and they deleted the running os and a lot of files and stuff..., now is running on leopard 10.5.8 and it's giving me a lot of problems because is soo obsolete, also hte computer is crashing all the time and every time I try ti install the SL dvd, the computer won't read the dvd and I'm keeps booting me off. Is not getting better at all and now when I restart the iMac before I get the grey apple screen, the folder of death icon flashes, (I already lost my Macbookpro due this situation. What can I do to resolve this aggravating and frustrating Issue. Need help now ..Please

Before we get too far, please clarify this part:
    I have a 2009 iMac 4,1
A 2009 iMac cannot be an iMac 4,1; they are 9,1 and higher. Did you mean to type "2006?" That would be an iMac 4,1. We need to pin down the model issue before proceeding.
It could be the drive, not the disk, that is dirty. Try a drive cleaning disk, usually about US$5-15 at home entertainment, electronics stores and office superstores

Snow Leopard breaks quite a few drivers - my Canon exhibited the same problem.
I eventually found updated drivers on the Canon website. You can try that with the HP, but if the all-in-one is more than a year or so old, don't hold your breath.
You can also try Software Update to see if it will offer new drivers, or failing that go to the Support Downloads site and search for HP updates.
In fact there's a new one for HP at the top of the list just now.
You may not necessarily want the latest one, though - check the specs to see if your model is covered; if not, search for the previous update etc.

I'm having this issue as well only with a little different twist I guess. I'm transferring the iWorks applications from my Macbook Pro 3,1 with Lion to a new MBP 10,1 running Mountain Lion. I transferred the apps over using DropCopy since the older MBP doesn't have AirPlay. Applications show up but crash upon opening. This is the first install so there are no previous plist, versions or such to delete. All three crashed upon opening every time until I just had to have Keynote and purchased again - although Apple agreed to refund that purchase since my previous version quit working. Any ideas since I don't have any previous plist/versions to delete? Thanks in adavnce for any help you can offer.
