Help- laptop repair

I tried to reset my hp notebook to the state I first bought it in but I shut it down before it was finished and now it keeps saying 'preparing automatic repair' and 'diagnosing your PC' over and over and now loading at all. How do I fix this. Please help.

Hi,
Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Bios option ( f10 ) and under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory.  Post back with the details of any error messages.
Note:  If the option to run these tests is not available in the Bios Menu, use the f2 diagnostic menu instead.
Can you also post back with the following details.
The full Model No. and Product No. of your notebook - see Here for a guide on locating this information.
The full version of the operating system you are using ( ie Windows 7 64bit ).

Sounds like it is most likely a hardware issue, if it powers off immediately. Most likely a bad stick of RAM. As you're going to do, take it in, and a diagnostic can be done on it(covered by your BTP).

I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

Try changing your Apple ID password at iforgot.apple.com first.
    Also:
How to reset your Apple ID security questions.
Go to appleid.apple.com, click on the blue button that says 'Manage Your Apple ID'.
Log in with your Apple ID and password. (If you have forgotten your Apple ID password, go to iforgot.apple.com first to reset your password with a password recovery email)
Go to the Password & Security section on the left side, and click on the link underneath the security questions that says 'Forgot your answers? Send reset security info email to [email]'.  This will generate an automated e-mail that will allow you to reset your security questions.
If that doesn't work, or  there is no rescue email link available, then click on 'Temporary Support PIN' that is in the bottom left side, and generate a 4-digit PIN for the Apple Account Security Advisor you will be contacting later.
    Next, go to https://getsupport.apple.com
(If you see a message that says 'There are no products registered to this Apple ID, simply click on 'See all products and services')
Choose 'More Products & Services', then 'Apple ID'.
    A new page will open.
Choose 'Other Apple ID Topics', then 'Forgotten Apple ID Security Questions'.
    Click the blue 'Continue' button.
Select the contact option that suits your needs best.

  • Looking to get HP Laptop repaired

Since about Agust (of 2013), all the USB ports in my laptop have decided to break/not work. I'm positive it's a physical problem, as some of the prongs (or whatever you'd call them) on the USB ports have broken off. Is there any way I can get my laptop repaired through HP? I've really missed using a mouse.

Getting the motherboard replaced on an out of warranty HP laptop by HP is going to cost $300-400. Through a local shop maybe $250-300. What model laptop are we talking about?

  • Help: Lenovo Laptop repair in London UK

    Hi,
I managed to crack my LCD screen on my N500 . It's still under warrenty, but I don't think this is covered.
Can anyone recomend a repair shop in the London area that's IBM/Lenovo certified? I've looked up one place that's in East London but I'm not sure if they stock LCD's for this brand (I'll have to call them tomorrow) and it'll probably cost me £150 to replace (just under half of what I paid for the laptop)
Any help will be greatly appriciated.
    Thanks
    Alex

I live in London and don't know of any Apple resellers that can repair iPods and are located in central London (except of course the Apple store Regent St).
I think sending it by post is your only option unless you visit father afield.
I only know of Cancom which is the one I think you referred to because it's in Croydon.

  • Laptop Repaired, With A Side of Negligence & Nonsense(Follow-up to HP ENVY dv7-7250us Casing Damage)

    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/HP-Envy-dv7-7250us-Casing-Damage/m-p/3270715
The link above explains the issue I originally had with the PC.  Aside from that though, I requested they also repair the headphone port, as it became horribly loose.
My customer support experience was surprisingly easy compared to experiences with other companies.  Everything was said and done in less than an hour, and I sent out the PC 2 days later.  I recieved my PC 16 days later.  When I opened the laptop, I had found that the repair was a success, the chassis even felt more solid than when I first got the computer, and the headphone port felt very stable and firm.
But the positives stop there.  I found that there was a small, yet highly-noticeable permanent scratch on the screen.  Couldn't have been just a little more careful with it?  I'm certain this kind of scratch definitely can't be caused during the shipping process.  Something really sharp had contact with the screen.  But that issue really didn't bother me too bad.  The slight disappointment turned to mind-boggling anger and frustration when I turned the PC on.  I had found that the BIOS had been tampered with, with the message "Manufacture Programming Mode is in Unlock Mode" appearing before the company logo appears, my sign-in info was deleted, and Windows was no longer activated...  This was a STRICTLY PHYSICAL REPAIR! Absolutely no issues involving software whatsoever.  Why did he/she access my PC, install support solutions software on my PC and run diagnostics when I included a written note stating that "There are no software issues I wish to have resolved.  This is simply housing repair. I request that the PC not be powered on or operated", placed in the box with the PC.
I suspect that the changes in software are responsible for the failure of Windows Update.  Upon Windows Update restarting my PC, there was no longer any display output after leaving the BIOS and booting Windows 8, essentially rendering my PC unusable.  Not to mention, my CD/DVD drive stopped functioning following the update as well...  The display and CD/DVD drive still operate when booting into Linux via USB, but they both turn off when booting into Windows 8.
So, in repairing the housing and replacing the headphone port, my screen gets badly scratched, my PC was accessed when I requested against it, my sign-in info was removed, there's unwanted support solutions software on my PC, there's a message before the BIOS that I haven't seen before, and thanks to an issue involving Windows Update, my PC is unusable...
I'm planning to send it in again ASAP.  Life's been hard without my HP Envy dv7-7250us.  My secondary PC, an HP Envy X2-g010nr laptop/tablet detachable, is easily overloaded by the daily strain of being used as a primary computer, and it can't handle any of the 3D steam games I play on the dv7.

I have forwarded your post to the right people for their review. You should hear back from someone shortly via Private Message on this forum.

Do a device reset as outlined below. This will clear the message and allow you to use your device again.
    Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)
    1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.
    2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
    3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.

  • Request laptop repair

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I'm having problems with my laptop (blue error screen and can't access revoery mode no matter what I do. even tried to boot the OS from a USB in order to do a fresh install to no avail) I purchased it in February 2013, so it's still under warranty. How do I go about requesting a repair from HP? I e-mailed them a case report is that how it's done? I haven't heard back from them and it's been a few days....

The fastest way to get a "case" opened and a case number / ticket number assigned and get your system into the process of having it repaired -- at least if you are in the USA, is to CALL HP on the phone -- you can use Chat, too, as long as you have Warranty.  The Phone is fastest as long as you can take the time to hassle through the menus (few) and wait a few minutes for the right tech (usually not too long).
The other advantage of taking care of this on the phone, other than no more delays, is that the HP tech can give you all the information you need to make sure you can get the system prepared for the repair process.

    Commentary
If you are sending the system to HP for repair, know that you should have your data COMPLETELY backed up before you let that computer out of your sight.  Think Image and maybe a USB Recovery stick, plust a couple of backups of your personal data...
Sensitive Data should be removed from the computer.  If the computer is going to travel away from home, it is going to be vulnerable.
Change the login password -- Do not send your computer away from home with a whimpy password, nor a password that is the same one you use for everything else.  If the computer IS lost, think about how you will feel when the thief has your computer and your password.  Think about how you will feel if that password works for your... bank account.
If your computer is going to travel away from home:  Think about stripping all your personal data from the computer.
Unless the issue with the computer includes the battery, do not send the battery.  HP has batteries.  HP has AC power cords, too.  HP will advise you whether to send the power cord.  Thieves cannot as easily sell your computer without a power cord and without the battery they cannot easily turn on the computer if they steal the computer in transit.
    Now the good news:
Repairs do usually take a short amount of time, at least in the USA.
Shipping is safe, fast, and efficient.
You can call HP every day and bug them about status on your computer - they will be nice to you even if it drives them nuts.
    Good Luck!

  • Can't recover my laptop-"Repair My Computer" not appearing in the boot menu

A couple of times in the past have had to recover my laptop and it has been an easy process thanks to the built in recovery option (Repair my computer) in the boot menu (when F8 is pressed on the Toshiba screen), but now when i press F8 during the Toshiba screen and go to the boot options, there is no option to repair my computer. Repair my computer is usually the very first option but now the first option is "Start Windows in Safe mode". Repair my computer has disapeared! :(
I think the cause of my problem is that i booted my laptop using my friend's windows boot disk when my computer wouldn't start a month back. It actually got my laptop going again but after booting my laptop, it told me that there is a problem with the startup and it asked if i would like to repair it and restart, which i did. Also, the windows boot disk i used to boot my laptop is a 64bit version and my laptop has a 32bit operating system. i don't know if that makes any difference.
Could someone please help me by letting me know if there is something i can do to get "Repair my computer" back. It's so handy recovering my computer when i want to just start afresh and get my laptop running at it's best again.

    Hi!
I agree with Horwath. You can nothing do expect to boot from Toshiba recovery disk and restore the factory settings.
If the Repair my computer option doesnt work its strange OS issue that cant be fixed. A new installation is necessary.
But with Toshiba recovery disk its done in few minutes. Boot from and it and follow the screen instructions. After this all drivers are installed too and the notebook is ready to use. :)

  • Laptop repair nightmare

Let me begin by stating that when I bought my last computer, it was the third one I purchased from Best Buy. This was based primarily on the ability to personally interact with Geek Squad for repairs at a somewhat local store.
So when I handed off my latest laptop for repair under Geek Squad extended warranty, I was completely shocked at the two week window I was given. There is absolutely no acceptable scenario to force a customer to go two weeks without a personal computer that is a basic daily requirement , and a second computer as an alternative is simply an unacceptable one. Particularly from a service making the claims such as those portrayed by Geek Squad.
Additionally, shipping same computer with my personal information halfway across the country in the hands of a third party unvetted by Best Buy, who is the agent I entrusted but obviously will not take responsibility for any damages, theft or loss to my personal computer, is also completely unacceptable. Not to mention that doing so dramatically increases the opportunity for those scenarios.
However, the real issues is that my personal computer with my personal information was not noted on the status link "in real time" as having been received by Geek Squad at the service center until two days after UPS tracking said it was received. How is a two day lag even remotely considered "real time" ? Additionally, this log in as "received" did not occur until I made a phone call this morning to demand my computer be located and a message was sent to the repair center. Based on observations thus far, I think I am reasonable in assuming it would not have ben logged in yet.
So now, six days after I entrusted Geek Squad with my personal computer, it is still not even in a repair queue status. Again, not even in the realm of acceptable, particularly with the claims made by Best Buy.
At the same time all this has been occurring, I made several attempts to contact customer care. This is something that apparently Best Buy is not interested in. I base this on the fact that there is no customer service option in the automated answering system and that the customer service email option is not very easy to find on the website, being the last option buried on the bottom of the page. However the use of this is probably best described as a maddening exercise in futility. After outlining the issues, I was contacted by Esther, who apologized, said they were looking into it, and heres $15 gift cert. However after several back and forth communications with Esther and no real action other than "we can find no record of your purchase” (????????? the original email had my full name, address, phone number and email which are both connected to the service order?????!!!!!!!!!!!), my last email to her was replied to by someone else named Zyle, asking me for information. Interestingly the information Zyle was asking for was actually in the email he replied to. :/ I forwarded him screen shots of the service order and have yet to hear back. :/
Also, the automated voice system engages in what I would term as a very combative attempt to redirect you to speak to Geek Squad about the "status" of your repair, despite answering "no" at least twice when the option is given. Instead my repeated "no" is finally met with a request to enter the 16 digit number of my service order. :/
Finally, today I had the pleasure of speaking with Geek Squad representative Wes. When I told Wes that I was not interested in the status of my repair but would like to speak with a customer care representative, he said there was no such person/place etc. He then proceeded to ask me what my issue was. As I began to explain, instead of hearing me out as I once again attempted to re-iterate my problems which is not possible in a couple sentences, he proceeded to interject with comments and excuses that I've already heard numerous times. At this point I informed him that he could not interject until I was finished, and asked if he was glad he had asked me what my issue was. His reply to me was "I'm indifferent..." followed by noting he is unable to help me or do anything about my problem. Thank you Wes for your indifference. I then asked if this was being recorded and he replied yes, it was. So apparently Wes has no reason to be worried about being indifferent to customers issues.
So, a two day lag in updates to the online service update is considered "real time", and indifference is considered an acceptable customer service term.
I will be posting further developments, however, this computer will most likely be the last product I will purchase from Best Buy. To say this interaction has been unsatisfactory would be a compliment at this point.
As I'm posting this I have been in contact with the Geek Squad managers at the store I originally handed off the computer to. They are doing everything they can to try and expedite the repair at this point and seem genuinely sympathetic to my plight, although it is obvious most of the issues stem from policies that they have no control over. Hopefully at some point my laptop will be in a a status other than "received" after 6 days. I can express how unacceptable that is by any standard. It completely eliminates any reason to choose Best Buy over other retailers.

    Hello Falcon,
It’s never a fun thing to have to use a computer that’s not working properly, especially if needed for school or work.  I can understand why being without your computer for any length of time can be difficult, so it’s disappointing to hear the estimated repair time came as such a surprise when checking it in for service underneath your Geek Squad Protection plan.
While our Geek Squad agents in our store locations may be able to fix minor hardware repairs or software issues, we tend to ship any complex repairs to our service center in Louisville, KY to ensure we are repairing your computer to manufacturer’s standards. As poprex911 mentions, we service each computer on a first come, first serve basis, and including shipping, this process typically takes around 2 weeks to complete. I truly apologize if this wasn’t fully explained to you when we were checking in your computer at your local Geek Squad counter.
After pulling up your service order using the email address you supplied when registering for the forum, I see your computer is currently awaiting service, as it only arrived yesterday.  While I do see that your computer’s ETA is 6/10, please know I’ll be keeping an eye on your service, and I’ll provide an update as soon as I have more information available to us.
    Thank you for your patience,

  • I need help to repair my external hard drive

    (1) My External Hard Drive finally stopped  working. Whenever I tried to use it, I would only get variants of, "Time Machine couldn't complete the Backup to "My Passport for Mac", or "The backup disc is not available".
    (2) "No problem," I thought. "There is no problem with my computer, so I'll just buy another external hard drive," and I did.
    (3) About this time, I partitioned my computer hard drive to enable me to run both Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion. I did this with step-by-step instructions by Apple technicians.
    (4) I now find that I have lost a considerable number of files, including those that I value most highly.
    (5) I now find that I need the files in my old, abandoned external hard drive, and it seems to me that the easiest way to access those files is simply to repair it.
(Here's what I've tried so far: (1) Disc Utility Repair. Didn't help. (2) COMMAND-R start. This produced a window with the following entries: Restore from Time Machine Backup, Reinstall OSX, Get Help online, Disk Utility. It seemed to offer hope, but I couldn't highlight any of them, and the "continue" command was dimned out. Where do I go from here? Data recovery is the solution usually offered, and I've alwys wondered why. It seems to me that fixing the external hard drive should always be the first thing to be considered. Data recovery is expensive, and fixing the external hard drive might be cheap.
