HELP!! My library is gone!!

I tried opening Itunes and all of my songs are gone. I didn't shut down my computer wrong, I reinstalled Itunes, and nothing is working. I have no idea how this happened and I'm freaking out!! All it said when I started my computer was that there was a new update for Itunes, and I open Itunes and there's nothing there! What should I do?!

Try holding down the Shift key in Windows when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. The default location for your iTunes library is in \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\. Look in there and see if you have more than one library file (they have the extension .itl) If you have more than one try opening them in turn, you may find your original library is still intact: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file

  • Please help my library is gone after recent update

The automatic update was installed, and now there is NOTHING in the library. What did I do, and more importantly, what do I do now? I tried to drad the My music files into itunes, but nothing happened. I got some strange thing about damaged files. HELP me,please!!!!

Thanks - that's a bit helpful, but it's still rather a pain, especially for music that you didn't purchase via iTunes.
I was able to restore those using the "transfer purchases" feature. But I still have about 600 songs that I didn't purchase from iTunes Store ... problem is, following this suggestion will be slow and tedious, because I have to figure out which songs are not in the iTunes Library and then re-import them.
(As I've mentioned in other threads up at the top here, the third-party options, like iPodRip and Music Rescue, aren't working at all for me.)

  • Help! Library totally gone after update!

Something wierd happened, I updated Itunes recently and nothing seemed wrong, until I went to sync my ipod. It said: this ipod is synced to a different library. So I clicked on my music in the windows start menu and there was nothing there. So then I went and did a search, and found my old my music folder in the recycle bin. If I were to copy my old one in place of the new one would it automatically update my library or do I have to import all my music and stuff again?

well I just imported the whole folder into my library and everything seems good!

  • Help! Whole Iphoto library is gone.

So I have been having a few problems with the computer shutting down lately but I haven't noticed any major problems when rebooting. But then I went to open iPhoto and my entire library is gone. When I go into finder they are all still in folders under the iPhoto library but when I try to resync the folders to the iPhoto library while the application is open but it won't let me. I tried syncing a new set of pictures and it worked and saved to iPhoto but those are the only pictures that show when I open the application please help!!!

    Your database has been corrupted.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Help! our library is gone.

We opened up itunes tonight to buy some new songs only to find our entire library is gone. We opened up the itunes music folder in our C drive and found some of the songs (most of the A's and some of the B's) but that's it. We have no idea what happened (nothing else is wrong w/our computer, we haven't lost any other files that we know of, the computer did not crash, etc). Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thank you.

    Hi Smrecek,
This happened to me too and I don't know what caused it. I was doing some major uninstalling of programs (like PowerDVD) for HDD space and my songs (except for the As and some of the Bs) were gone. None of the things I deleted had anything to do with itunes or music. I even lost my pictures and some of my videos. The damage seemed to be confined to the "My Documents" folder. I know they weren't just moved because I checked the available space on my C drive and I had too much.
Anyway, if you have an ipod, there are 3rd party softwares you could use to transfer your songs back to your PC. If you don't have it backed up somewhere, then I'm sorry, I don't think it's possible to recover your music except to re-rip them from CD.

  • My IPhoto library is gone and I cannot find it. I have found an earlier version witha few photos but the big one is gone. Any ideas?

My IPhoto library is gone and cannot be found. There is an IPhoto in Applications marked "original". I can find the one I'm looking for using Time Machine but when I try to open it it says that it cannot be opened as there is a newer version installed. Any help would greatly be appreciated:-)

Download and use  Find Any File  to search for the file "Library6.iPhoto" which is in every iPhoto Library package. If you find more than one check both to see if one is your missing library.

  • Please help - entire library is missing

    Hello guys,
I am currently experiencing some problems with iTunes, I hope someone can help me. After not having used my PC since September, I accessed it yesterday. After installing the iTunes update, everything was still normal, but after the computer had to be restarted for the HP update, ALL my media files are gone. Not only is the library wiped, the actual folder where the file should be is empty.
I will explain what I did below.
Also, please excuse my English, it's not my first language.
Okay, then let me explain my problem from the beginning. Maybe someone can tell me what I did wrong.
I am from Germany, but I am currently in the US as an exchange student. At home, I used a HP PC with Vista, but I decided to buy a little netbook (Asus eeePC)to take with me. The most important thing for me was (and still is) my music, my iTunes library. It is 86.4 GB big and consists of everything; songs, TV-shows, movies, apps, podcasts, audiobooks - you name it. In short, it's the result of years of listening to and collecting music; and it's not mine alone, the whole family uses it. I researched ways to copy my library unto my new netbook, but with a file that size, it's not that easy. Eventually, I decided to use a backup and re-create the library on the netbook. However, this did, for reasons unknown to me, not work, the backup was (from the 2nd disc on) unreadable. I created 2 more backups, tried to read them with different PCs - the same problem every time.
Finally, I had to leave without having accomplished anything. But I took my iPod touch with me, it had most of the files on it. I hoped that I could somehow transfer the files from my iPod. However, shortly after I arrived, it was stolen. I bought a new one, but of course all the files on it are gone.
In he meantime, my family at home created a new backup and send it to me - but this one, again, is not readable. Now I researched other possible ways on how to get my files over here. I decided to use a torrent this time. I had someone install a VNC client on my PC so I can access it from here, and then I installed utorrent and created a torrent from my entire library, send it to myself per e-mail and started downloading on my netbook. I was really happy to finally have found a way - but I should be wrong.
Since I had access to my iTunes after so much time, I decided to open iTunes and listen to a few songs. However, as my PC has not been used since I left in September, there were some available updates. Unsuspecting, I installed the new iTunes version and also a HP update. After the iTunes update everything was still okay, but after the PC had to be restarted for the HP update to work, my entire library was gone! And I checked, not only is the library empty, but the actual song-file is gone, meaning when I open, eg, "C:\Users\Chris\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Linkin Park\Meteora" the folder is totally empty.
That's how it is now. I decided not to do anything big, as I am afraid I'll mess it up even worse (though I don't think that's quite possible - there is nothing to mess up left, afterall).
Please please please, can somebody help me?

If you don't have any other back up, and the torrent files you sent to yourself are gone, then your music is gone.
Nobody can help you recover data that no longer exists, but I can offer some sympathy. Sorry to read your story.

  • I just updated to 8.1 and my library is gone, but still on my iPod touch

I just updated my iTunes to 8.1. I restarted my computer, and when iTunes started again, my library was gone. i was able to get my apps back by using the transfer purchases option, but i have no idea how to get everything else back. please help as soon as possible. Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to AD!
Maybe the itunes database file just didn't get updated properly.
Have you seen this article on looking for an ITL file in the Previous iTunes Library folder?
There should be a file dated from today when you upgraded itunes.

  • My iPhoto library is gone

My iPhoto library is gone, and I don't know where.
My system was slow, so I ran the Disc Utility and it told me the disc needed repair. I took it to an Apple Store genius bar.
The "genius" told me the disc was dying, slowly. He got me to buy a portable hard drive. Then he sent me to sit in a theatre seat and told me to copy my important data files onto it.
I copied my documents, seemingly without difficulty. I tried to copy my iPhoto library. But for some reason the most recent 10 rolls of digital "film" did not copy.
Moreover, for some reason the entire iPhoto library is now missing from my original hard drive.
The "genius" wasn't too concerned. He spent 5-10 minutes looking for my iPhoto library, and shrugged. It's a consequence of an aging disc, he said, sending me on my way.
Now I'm at home trying to find my iPhoto library on my still-functioning computer. When I try to open iPhoto, it says, "Your photo library was not found. Do you want to find your iPhoto library folder?"
Yes I do. But where could it be? The "genius" looked in the obvious places. I keep searching under User, Photos, Libraries, things like that.
Any ideas? I could really use some help here.

    Search for
    library6.iphoto
that's the main database file. Wherever that is, your Library is. Use an app like EasyFind to search the disk. It's slower than Spotlight but will search locations that Spotlight won't.

  • My itunes library has gone following a laptop rebuild.  I do have my iPod which is up to date - can I transfer from the iPod to the library or will the iPod lose all its data if I snyc?

My itunes library has gone and is empty following a laptop rebuild.  I do have my iPod which is up to date with music, photos, apps etc - can I transfer from the iPod Touch to the library or will the iPod lose all its data if I sync to the laptop?  PLEASE HELP!

I'm guessing you've got iPod touch 2nd generation
iPod touch 2nd generation only goes up to 4.2.1, so you'll need a newer generation...
iPod touch 3rd generation only goes up to 5.1.1
4th and 5th generation both go up to iOS 6.1.3, wich is the current latest version.
    Hope this helps

  • Updated to latest iTunes version now library is gone

    Help
I updated my iTunes this morning to the latest version 7.1.0.59
Now ALL the songs in my library are gone. Why did this happen and is there NO way to get the songs on my iPOD back to the iTunes library????

Well, it's possible that it's in a different location on your computer than "My Music".
You might want to try searching your computer for "iTunes" (a lot of results might come up, but just look for a folder called "iTunes", not all of the installation files).
If that doesn't seem to turn up anything, then the best idea would be to transfer the content from your iPod to your computer.
First, you'll need to prevent iTunes from automatically syncing with your iPod and deleting everything off of it.
To do that, follow these steps:
    1 - Open iTunes.
2 - Connect your iPod to your computer.
3 - Basically as soon as your iPod begins to display "Do Not Disconnect", begin to press and hold the Shift and Ctrl keys on your keyboard together simultaneously.
Continue to hold these keys for about 20 seconds after your iPod is showing up in the Source List in iTunes.
After you've done this, click on your iPod's name in the Source List, and under the "Summary" tab, tick the "Manually manage" option for your iPod. Click the “Apply” button in the bottom-right corner to save your changes.
    Now onto the transferring.
There are a few different ways to copy your iPod's songs to your computer, but probably the most straightforward method is to download a third-party program that can copy the songs from your iPod to your computer.
I would suggest that you try YamiPod. It's free, and I've heard it recommended a lot.

  • My iTunes library is gone again.

It seems that everytime I restart my PC I lose my iTunes libraby.  I usually buy something everyu week or two and each time I go to buy my library is gone.  Yes I know how to get it back but it's starting to be a total pain in the butt.  That and I end up losing most of my artwork which takes me many hours to get back.  NO I am not using a Sony Viao, I am using an HP Touchsmart PC running Windows 7.  HELP This really ***** and I'm about at the end of my rope with Apple.

What do you mean your not sure it backed up?
Either you regularly maintain a backup copy of your important info/music/pics/docs ( as everyone should always do) or you don't.
If for some reason you have failed to do this (terrible idea), then you can transfer itunes purchases from your ipod:
    File>Transfer purchases

  • When I opened Iphoto today, my library was gone!

I opened up iphoto today version 9.6, only to discover my library was gone! I just get a dialogue saying "Which photo library do you want iPhoto to use?" Then the list is empty. I have the options "Create New..." or "Other Library..." When I click other library, I cannot choose any file to bring back my photos.
I found the iPhoto Library folder in my Pictures folder, but when I click Get Info, the whole folder is only 15mb!!!! Not quite enough for thousands and thousands of pictures!!
Please help me get my photos back, I checked my backup, and there's nothing in there either! I cannot backup from Time Machine!
I am really worried, I have my pictures of my family, engagement, vacations with the wife, everything cannot be just gone overnight!

I found the iPhoto Library folder in my Pictures folder, but when I click Get Info, the whole folder is only 15mb!!!!
That may be a new iPhoto Library created by iPhoto, because it could not find your regular library.
Have you signed into your usual user account or are you singed into a different user account? Is everything else the same as before, your Mail for example?
Did this happen directly after you upgraded to Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6 or have you used your library with this version? What happened directly before the library vanished? Did you move the library or ran an cleaning apps?

  • After latest update (11. something) most of my library is gone

I don't know what I did, or what itunes did, but I downloaded the latest update and then synced my ipod touch and ran out the door. When I returned, I was looking for a particular album and that's when I realized that 70% or more of my library is gone. It's not in my music files in My Computer. I don't know where to look for it. I had songs/albums in my library that I no longer have the CDs for. Most of that music was sentimental things. Please help!

Perhaps it’s a design feature to speed up the Organizer launch.
    I am sure it is.
    - The normal use of the Organizer is not the folder view, it's the thumbnail view with an organization based on categories and folder. That way you should forget completely where your pictures are stored. Anyway, the folder view in the Explorer is not a map of the location of the different bits of your file, it's only a logical representation. That's easy to see when you are doing a defragmentation.
    - The folder view is useful even for those using normally the thumbnail view, but that is only for rare cases when you must change the folder organization, for instance moving files to another drive. The folder view is here to prevent you from changing things from the explorer and outside of the Organizer.
    - The new folder list view, which you find 'funny' is there to help better organizing using tags. Its huge advantage is that such a view is created extremely quickly by extracting the last subfolder in the media table : it's the way the database sees the folders, based on its own content,  totally ignoring the complex folder organization of your disk with media files or any unrelated other kind of data. You should use it in many cases, the main purpose being assigning tags when you have assigned descriptive folder names. I had suggested such a solution to prevent the long standing bugs in the folder view of previous versions.
    So yes, the purpose is:
    - to speed up switching modes
    - to help folder organization fans to migrate to tags organization
    - to hopefully get rid of the old folder organization bugs

  • ITunes Library file gone missing

    Hi there,
    This is my first post
Anyway on more upsetting words, my iTunes library has gone walkies!
I have an iPhone 5 and an iPod Classic 160gb.
So that means i have 2 different libraries.
So ive had to change which library iTunes brings up whenever i use one or the other.
However today i went as normal to change from my iPhone library to my iPod and the library file seems to have dissapeared!
And im really stressing out . Look at the pictures and tell me if theres anything unusual.
    Please help me!!!

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be copied & renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to an earlier state. Look for a recent .tmp file that is similar in size to the .itl files in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. If it has happened repeatedly you may want the earliest such file generated since the last iTunes upgrade.
If applicable, see iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.
