Help Needed - Java Threads

Hi there,
It's related to Threads in Java, I have the following code and it doesnt compile using NetBeans. While it compiles and runs fine in command prompt i.e. using javac testthreads.java.
class test implements Runnable{
public void run(){
System.out.println("this is from test class");
class testthreads{
public static void main(String args[]){
test t=new test();
Thread tt=new Thread(t);
tt.start();
I get the following error when trying to compile.
init:
deps-jar:
Compiling 1 source file to C:\myjavacode\ExtendThreadClassTest0\build\classes
C:\myjavacode\ExtendThreadClassTest0\src\MainClass.java:13: cannot find symbol
symbol : constructor Thread(test)
location: class java.lang.Thread
Thread tt=new Thread(t);
1 error
BUILD FAILED (total time: 0 seconds)
If I use extends Thread instead of implements Runnable the above source code compiles fine in NetBeans as well.
Any idea what's wrong..... Pls suggest!!
Thanks!

but this seems to be the issue with netbeans ide.... any idea if I need to change any setting etc. in IDE?

  • Need help with java thread program

    Hi
    I have an applet which does some painting etc, i need to write a thread which runs in background, and if there is no user activity for 30 min will refresh the screen.
    I have one good thing that all user options go from one program so i know when user does some thing.
    How do i write this thread program?
    1. I need this program to start counter as soon as some activity is done by user
    2. When user does some thing stop this thread
    3. when user completes his action restart the thread with 30 min timer.
    4. when there is no activity for 30 min refresh the screen
    Any help will be really good
    Ashish

    Not sure what the problem is. Your pseudo code looks good to me.
    The only suggestion I would make is that your use a Timer so you don't have to worry about creating your own Thread. You schedule a Timer to fire in 30 minutes. Everytime you have activiity you cancel the timer and reschedule it.

  • Help needed on threads!!!

    Hello All,
    Following is the scenario that I'm trying to do.
    Thread_A: puts the data/messages into Queue A (I'm using linked list as the data structure)
    Thread_B - pulls the data/messages out from Queue A .
    So far I have implemented the following
    Class A implements Runnable
    {   LinkedList  queue A  = new LinkedList ();
    Thread_ A = new THread (this)
    Thread_A.start();
    run{
    Putting the messages into QueueA;
    classB.copyQueue(queueA); //this method is defined in classB
    Class B implements Runnable
    {   LinkedList  queueB   = new LinkedList ();
    Thread_ B = new THread (this)
    Thread_B.start();
    copyQueue(linkedList A){
    queueB = A;
    run{
    pull the messages from QueueB;
    I hope I have explanined it clearly. . Is my design approach ok so far.? somehow I don't get that feelng. THought I will consult the experts. I'm new to java. Please excuse me if this is a silly question. Please help.
    Thanks.

    Well, there's no reason for each class to have it's own reference to the queue, for a start. Simpler to give B a reference to the instance of class A.
    You need to guard the access to the queue with synchronized and use the wait/notify methods to make threadB wait if the queue is empty.
    Easiest to stick a pair of syncrhonized methods into class A like:
    public synchronized void addToQueue(Object item) {
         if(queueA.isEmpty())
             notifyAll();   // if queue was empty wake the consumer thread
         queueA.add(item);
    public synchronized Object takeFromQueue() throws InteruptedException {
        while queueA.isEmpty()
           wait();
        return queueA.removeFirst();
         }Thread B calls takeFormQueue to get each item, which will cause it to wait until there's somthing to take.

  • Help needed about thread priority

    Hello, could someone help me with the priorities in java? I got 10 levels in total(1-10), but I do need at least 20 levels for my multiple threads program.
    Thank you for your kind help in advance.

    First, let me apologize if I am incorrect, but it seems that the native Thread implementation restricts you to 10 priorities regardless.
    However, you can do just about anything you envision, but it will require some implementation on your part.
    You could implement a subclass of thread that contains your priority (which could be from 1-20). You could then maintain a ThreadManager that would store all running threads, and would accept requests to start and stop threads. The ThreadManager could make decisions about which threads to run, which to interrupt, which to sleep, etc., based on your priority value.
    This sounds like alot to swallow, but I'm sure it's doable if you understand threads.

    You're still blank. Not even close to correct. You don't seem to know Java well enough to tackle this. You will NOT be able to accomplish this by asking questions here. Go back and learn more basics.

  • Urgent  help needed(java frames)

    Hi,
    I need urgent help for correcting a piece of code.
    I have written a piece of code for building a gui with some buttons, drawing some geometric shapes.The code consists of two files called Graph and Frame.
    The problem I suppose in the last part of the Graph file, which Rectangle and Circle are called together, the only shape that the program draws is rectangle.Here is the code:
    //Graph
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;

    You are very lucky that I'm currently boored. You should never tag a question as urgent. It might be urgent to you, but not to us who answer. And you should also use code formatting when you post code (see the formatting tips, or use the code-button).
    I made some changes to your Graph class. The most important thing is the abstract draw method that I added to the GeomFigur class.

  • JDBC help needed ; java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:test1

    hi, everyone, i had a problem when i run my own app to connect javadb in embedded mode
    i ve added the ~/javadb/lib/derby.jar to CLASSPATH
    and ~/javadb/lib/derby.jar:~/javadb/lib/derbytools.jar to DERBY_HOME
    but there is a problem said my own application class cannot be found.
    here is my code:
    import java.sql.*;
    class test1
      public static void main (String args [])
           throws SQLException
           try {
            Class.forName("org.apache.derby.jdbc.EmbeddedDriver");
        } catch (Exception e) {
            System.out.println("ERROR: failed to load javadb JDBC driver.");
            e.printStackTrace();
            return;
          Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:derby:testdb");
      try{
         Statement stmt1 = conn.createStatement();
            ResultSet rset1 = stmt1.executeQuery( "SELECT * FROM PART" );
         long counter1 = 0;
            double price1;
         while ( rset1.next() )
             price1 = rset1.getDouble(8);
             if (price1 == 1306.4)
              counter1++;
         System.out.println( counter1 );
         stmt1.executeQuery("SHUTDOWN");
         conn.close();
       catch (SQLException e )
         String errmsg = e.getMessage();
         System.out.println( errmsg );
    }and i ve followed one Derby JDBC tutorial on the internet,
    * AutoLoadJdbcDriver.java

    import java.sql.*;
    import java.util.*;

        try {
          listDrivers();
    // Find the driver for a given URL
          Driver driverClass = (Driver) DriverManager.getDriver(
            "jdbc:derby://somehost/somedb");
          System.out.println("\nDriver for jdbc:derby://somehost/somedb");
          System.out.println("   "+driverClass.getClass().getName());

        while (driverList.hasMoreElements()) {
          Driver driverClass = (Driver) driverList.nextElement();
          System.out.println("   "+driverClass.getClass().getName());
    The output below confirms that the DriverManager class is able to load any JDBC driver classes as long as their JAR files are included in the classpath.
    C:\>javac AutoLoadJdbcDriver.java
    C:\>java -cp .;\local\javadb\lib\derbyclient.jar AutoLoadJdbcDriver
    List of drivers:
    sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver
    org.apache.derby.jdbc.ClientDriver
    Driver for jdbc:derby://somehost/somedb
    org.apache.derby.jdbc.ClientDriver
    List of drivers:
    sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver
    org.apache.derby.jdbc.ClientDriver
    but on my machine , it keep telling me the massage
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: SimpleApp
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: test1
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: AutoLoadJdbcDriver
    the ij works well
    and the other java app(without jdbc) works well.
    anybody can help me to solve this problem?

    but on my machine , it keep telling me the massage
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: SimpleApp
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: test1
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: AutoLoadJdbcDriverI assume you get these messages when you try and run the three programs mentioned (SimpleApp, test1 and AutoLoadJdbcDriver).
    What commands do you use to do this? What does the command line report the CLASSPATH to be (using the echo command)?
    The simplest cause would be that you have the derby jar mentioned as part of CLASSPATH, but not the current directory.

  • Help needed in threads

    hi,
    Iam using the stop() from the API.But since it is deprecated I dont want to use it.Is there any way by which I could replace it ?I need to make changes in thousands of files.
    Any sample code for avoiding stop() wud be of immense help.

    Slightly at a tangent, but why
    while (true) {
    synchronized (mutex) {
    if (running) {
    //execute some task
    mutex.wait(500);
    } else {
    break; //will break from while(true) loop
    }instead of
    while (running) {
    //execute some task
    synchronized(mutex);
    mutex.wait(500);
    Often VM's interpretation of what volatile means can differ from each other and it is my experience that in the past various VMs have been buggy with volatile variables. Hence to be doubly sure I want to ensure that access to the "running" variable is synchronized.
    synchronized (mutex) {
      while (running) {
        //execute some task
        mutex.wait(500);
    }is equivalent to my code above of course and I could (should) have used this. The reason is that I did a cut-and-paste job with some hasty alterations where for various reasons I wanted to re-do a check before waiting and also cede the mutex inbetween executing the task and waiting. Apologies for any confusion.
    The reason I ask is that I've never found a use for
    "break".I'm not mad-keen on it either as it isn't very good practice IMHO but it was quite useful where I have used it.

  • Help with Java Threads

    Hello,
    Can anyone help with what I'm trying to do:
    I would like to create a thread such as:
    Database connection successful....
    where the '...' keep moving up. So as long as there is a database connection the '...'s should keep moving like so:
    ...... then back to:
    Does that make sense?
    Thanks
    am328

    What you want to do if really very simple...
    Why don't you first write a simple loop that generates your '.'s. Once you get that working, wrap the loop inside a thread that checks for a database connection.

  • Help needed: java / fedora printing

    A java print test program which used to work on fc4 and xp, now simply does not work on fedora core 5 (fc5). The test programs are here:
    http://www.apl.jhu.edu/~hall/java/Swing-Tutorial/Swing-Tutorial-Printing.html
    I am using a samsung ml-1750 with the hpijs driver although I do not think this matters.
    The app attempts to print a jpanel image first bringing up the print dialog box, and then printing.
    When the 'print' button is pressed nothing happens. If 'print to file' is chosen, an empty file is written out.
    "regular" printing .e.g of a web page, kedit document etc works fine
    Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks
    Lou

    you can try the following this fine works at my end on CentOS 4
    String strCommand = "lpr#"+masterpath+"/"+filename;
                                  System.out.println("Cmd="+ strCommand);
                                  String[] command=strCommand.split("#");
                                  p = rt.getRuntime().exec(command);

  • Help needed about Java Threads ?

    Hi,
    I have a p2p java program that contains many classes, A.java, B.java, etc. It works fine when i send or recieve to eachother one at a time, but I would like to be able to send/recieve things at the same time. So i would probably need to use Java Threads. Can somebody please show me how this is done. I would really appriciate it. Thanks!!
    import java.net.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.lang.*;
    public class A {
            private static String hostname; //host name
            public A () { }
           public static void send() throws IOException {
                    //send code here
            public static void receive() throws IOException{
                    //receive code here
            public static void main(String args[]) throws IOException {
                    //do both send/recieve at the same time?
                    send();
                    receieve();
    }

    Well, I think( this is comming out my rear ) that the scope of the recieve() call is not in the main method anymore but instead in class you've created with "new Thread()" and it's throwing from the public void run() instead. This is a good example of complicated code. I would do this:
    (Untested code)
    import java.net.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.lang.*;
    public class A implements Runnable { // <--- NEW
            private static String hostname; //host name
            public A () { }
            public static void send() throws IOException {
                    //send code here
            public static void receive() throws IOException{
                    //receive code here
            public static void main(String args[]) throws IOException {
                    //do both send/recieve at the same time?
                    new Thread( this ).start();
                    send();
            /******** NEW ************/
            public void run()
                while( keepListening )
                    // It's the assumption that recieve() is
                    // throwing the IOException from some net calls
                    try {
                       recieve();
                    } catch( IOException ioe ) {
                       System.out.println( "IOException in run()\n" + ioe.getMessage();
    }

  • !!!-Need help for terminating a Java thread in real time

    Hi everyone!
    I use J2SDK1.4.1 on a Unix platform.
    I want to terminate (or stop) a running java thread, which is dealing with time consuming tasks, in real-time (for example: the delay before the thread is terminated can't beyond one second), However, I don't know which techniques I can use to make sure the previous (or old) running java threads have been terminated?
    Could you please give me any help if you can?
    Any suggestion or reply will be kindly appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Thanks very much, jverd !
    I do set a flag that the thread should periodically check !
    Well, the scenario is like this:
    1. the thread read line by line (using BufferedReader) string from a probably huge-size file
    2. analyse each string read from the file if required (some strings may be omitted based on the user's operations), the analyzing process is a time-consuming task, and the analysing process may be terminated at any time the user want.
    3. record only the strings that have been analyzed by the previous process into a recording file
    The problem I meet is as follows: (Here, I suppose that it should take at least 30 seconds to finish analyse all the strings in a given huge file )
    1. the user start the analysing process, and run it for only 5 seconds,then stop the analyzing.
    2. the user start the analysing process again from the begining of the file(analyse the strings within the same file as previous step), and then stop the analysing process at 10 second. (it means, this time the analysing process is running for 10 seconds, still haven't finish analyse all the strings in the file).
    Once I open the record file, I saw some of the strings in the recording file have been repetitively record for 2 times, and the repetitive strings are just the strings the analysing time from at 5 second to at 10 second.
    And the repetitive times are depend on how many time the user start and stop the analysing process using the same file. for example, based on the above two steps, the user do the third step as follow:
    3. the user start the analysing process once again, analyse the same file,too. And run it for 15 seconds
    This time open the recording file, this time I saw some of the strings have been repetitively record for 3 times, and the repetitive strings are just the strings the analysing time from at 10 second to at 15 second.
    So, I guess the problem is probably because the previous analysing threads haven't been terminated completely, or say they just are blocked or set as inactive etc., then when the next time start the analysing process, the old threads will be reactive,and rerun ffrom the last time they are blocked.
    I hope you had catched what I mean, if you not, please ust let me know, I'll try to explain it again.
    Thanks once again!
