Help on JSlider!

Hi all,
I have a standard JSlider and I have the following problem:
When I click on the mouse, the JSlider value increase/decrease by ~10 toward my mouse.
What I would like is this:
When I click on the JSlider, the JSlider value becomes right away the value where I clicked.
Can it be done?
Thanks alot!
Arthax

I know this is not an entirely satisfactory solution because it depends heavily on the look and feel used but here goes :import javax.swing.*;
import javax.swing.plaf.SliderUI;
import javax.swing.plaf.basic.BasicSliderUI;
import java.awt.event.MouseAdapter;
import java.awt.event.MouseEvent;
public class ArthaxTest {
     public static void main(String[] args) {
          try {
               UIManager.setLookAndFeel(UIManager.getCrossPlatformLookAndFeelClassName());
          } catch (Exception e) {
               e.printStackTrace();
          final JFrame frame = new JFrame(ArthaxTest.class.getName());
          frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
          final JSlider slider = new JSlider(0, 100);
          slider.addMouseListener(new MouseAdapter() {
               public void mousePressed(MouseEvent e) {
                    SliderUI sliderUI = slider.getUI();
                    if (sliderUI instanceof BasicSliderUI) {
                         BasicSliderUI basicSliderUI = (BasicSliderUI)sliderUI;
                         if (slider.getOrientation() == JSlider.HORIZONTAL) {
                              slider.setValue(basicSliderUI.valueForXPosition(e.getX()));
                         } else {
                              slider.setValue(basicSliderUI.valueForYPosition(e.getY()));
                         e.consume();
          frame.setContentPane(slider);
          SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
               public void run() {
                    frame.setSize(400, 300);
                    frame.show();
}

  • Need help on Rendering  JSlider with Synth L&F

    Hi, I am trying to render JSlider with Synth L&F, but could not able to so.
    Specifically JSlider Thumb color.
    Here is my xml code
    <style id="cosSlider">
    <opaque value="true"/>
    <object id="thumbbackground" class="ThumbBackgroundPainter"/>
    <object class="javax.swing.plaf.ColorUIResource" id="thumbColor">
    <int>0</int>
    <int>0</int>
    <int>0</int>
    </object>
    <defaultsProperty key="Slider.ThumbBackground" type="idref" value="thumbColor"/>
    <painter method="sliderThumbBackground" idref="thumbbackground"/>
    <property key="Slider.thumbWidth" type="integer" value="5"/>
    <property key="Slider.thumbHeight" type="integer" value="2"/>
    <property key="Slider.trackBorder" type="boolean" value="true"/>
    <property key="Slider.paintValue" type="boolean" value="true"/>
    </style>
    <bind style="cosSlider" type="region" key="Slider"/>
    And me class files :
    public class ThumbBackgroundPainter extends SynthPainter{
    /** Creates a new instance of ThumbBackgroundPainter */
    public void paintSliderThumbBackground(SynthContext context,
    Graphics g,
    int x,
    int y,
    int w,
    int h,
    int orientation){
    Graphics2D g2 = (Graphics2D)g;
    Color start = UIManager.getColor("Slider.ThumbBackground");
    GradientPaint grPaint = new GradientPaint(
              (float)x, (float)y, start,
              (float)w, (float)h, start);
              g2.setPaint(start);
    g2.fillRect(x, y, w, h);
              g2.setPaint(null);
    // System.out.println("Hello ThumbBackground");
    g2.setRenderingHint(RenderingHints.KEY_ANTIALIASING, RenderingHints.VALUE_ANTIALIAS_ON);
    Please Help
    Thx.

    You need to change your xml to bind to "SliderThumb", rather than "Slider":
    change
    <bind style="cosSlider" type="region" key="Slider"/>
    to
    <bind style="cosSlider" type="region" key="SliderThumb"/>

  • Need help setting the exact size of my JSlider

    Hello everyone. I'm trying to build a small program to help people learn a about RGB colour values, and at the same time teach myself a bit more about Java. Things have been going fine so far until I came to setting my JSlider's size. The intention is to have three JSliders with a JPanel next to each. The I need the track of the slider to be exactly 256 pixels tall (one pixel per gradient value painted into the adjacent JPanel) plus whatever extra padding and spacing the Look And Feel dictates.
    I've got the height set to 256 pixels in the following code, but it makes the JSlider as a whole 256 pixels tall and so squishes the track. I've set the minor tick spacing to 2 so that if the track was actually 256 pixels tall, the ticks would alternate over each screen pixel. If you compile and run the code, you will notice that a few ticks appear next to each other without a one-pixel gap between them. I've also verified it by taking a screen capture, pasting it into the GIMP and then using the measure tool to check the size.
    I've tried searching through the API documentation to find ways of doing it, or to see if some ideas I've had so far were possible, but so far, I've not found anything particulairly satisfactory. I even tried to see if I could set the JSlider size to current JSlider size minus the track size, plus 256, but I couldn't find a way of getting the current size of the track.
    Can anyone help me out here? I'm rather stuck.

    Here's the code with all but the JSliders stripped out. Sorry about having to put it in a seperate post; the forum wouldn't allow it.

  • JSlider help still needed-mouse event

    Hi, I recently posted about help with the JSlider:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=604119&tstart=45
    I am extending the JSlider and want to be able to move to a certain value by clicking on it. The methods people have posted before all involve calculating based on where the user clicks and slider min,max, and height, and are not very accurate with my slider (once you get to the middle, the clicking is off by one value). I need a way to do this more accurately. Is there anyone who could help me? I have also heard there would be a way to rebuild the JSlider completely myself, and that I could then configure it how I need to. While this would be a hassle, it may be my only option, so any help with that would be appreciated. Thanks!

    I just had another look at this, and if you use the trackwidth instead of the sliderwidth,
    and factor in the difference between their starting points, it works perfectly.

  • JSlider or similar for controlling position in sound files help please.

    You know how winamp, wm player , etc, and JMStudio all have a "slider" bar to control position, along with a "numeric readout" of the current position.
    Fairly new to Java, but know this isn't a difficult thing to do, just haven't found out how to do it.
    Do not care if it is with JavaSound API or JMF, either is fine, just learning.
    Have read up on Sliders at:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/slider.html#labels
    But do not understand how to implement it with Audio file usage.
    My goal as a new programmer is to create a simple audio playing Applet:
    For a GREAT idea on what it will basically do check out:
    JMStudio:
    http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/jmf/2.1.1/jmstudio/jmstudio.html
    My goals are to have:
    Applet
    GUI with: Pause/Play button and a SLIDER to control position, just like described.
    Have it load and play an audio file when a link is clicked on using the PARAM tag from html
    I know about the open source/commercial products,,,, but I'm trying to learn, and those are too in depth to try and learn from right now, trying to take baby steps, and having difficulty finding anything beyond play()
    loop() and stop()
    searched google, groups, yahoo with various phrases.
    Thank you!

    You have to use a JSlider and combine its events with the setMediaTime method of the player.

  • Jslider problem help please!!!

    Could any one tell me how to have two different label tables on both sides(vertival slider).
    Thanks in advance

    I haven't done alot with the JSlider, nor have I attempted to do what you want, but I am fairly certain the JSlider does not have have the functionality to display two labels on opposite sides of the slider.
    These idea is not guarenteed, if you are interested you might want to try it:
    descend an object from JPanel
    use a grid layout in the JPanel
    place a second custom JPanel in the main JPanel next to the JSlider
    Do some custom painting in the custom JPanel to draw your second label
    This is what I would try myself if I was in need of what you are looking for.
    Best of luck,
    Dan Hughes

  • JSlider question, please help!

    Hi,
    I have a problem with JSlider. What I need a slider to have is both upper and lower tick marks. Lower is default,
    but my method for having upper ticks is to make another JSlider, with a custom SliderUI class for it's UI. By doing
    so, all I have is paintTicks defined, and set the slider to paint only the ticks. But the problem is the JSlider
    leaves an empty space above the ticks where the bar and thumb would have been painted.
    Is there any way to remove this space, and just have the ticks displayed?
    TIA,
    csmathie

    Here's a better solution - this overrides the BasicSliderUI to draw the ticks wherever you wan them. NOTE this is for a horizontal scrollbar only - you'd have to do some extra stuff for a vertical one.import java.awt.Graphics;
    import java.awt.Rectangle;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.plaf.basic.*;
    public class eBasicSliderUI extends BasicSliderUI{
        eBasicSliderUI(JSlider s) {
            super(s);
        protected void calculateGeometry() {
            calculateFocusRect();
            calculateContentRect();
            contentRect.height+=tickRect.height;
            calculateThumbSize();
            calculateTrackBuffer();
            calculateTrackRect();
            int newTicksHeight = 20;
            trackRect.y+=newTicksHeight;
            calculateTickRect();
            calculateLabelRect();
            labelRect.y+=4;
            calculateThumbLocation();
            tickRect.y = tickRect.y -tickRect.height-trackRect.height;
            tickRect.height+=(2*tickRect.height+trackRect.height);
        protected void paintMinorTickForHorizSlider( Graphics g, Rectangle tickBounds, int x ) {
            int minorHeight = (tickBounds.height - trackRect.height)  / 4 - 1;
            g.drawLine( x, 0, x, minorHeight);
            g.drawLine( x, (tickBounds.height+trackRect.height)/2-2,
                        x, (tickBounds.height+trackRect.height)/2 + minorHeight);
        protected void paintMajorTickForHorizSlider( Graphics g, Rectangle tickBounds, int x ) {
            int majorHeight = (tickBounds.height - trackRect.height)/2 - 2;
            g.drawLine( x, 0, x, majorHeight );
            g.drawLine( x, (tickBounds.height+trackRect.height)/2-2,
                        x, (tickBounds.height+trackRect.height)/2 + majorHeight);
        public void paint( Graphics g, JComponent c )   {
            recalculateIfInsetsChanged();
            recalculateIfOrientationChanged();
            Rectangle clip = g.getClipBounds();
            if ( slider.getPaintTicks() && clip.intersects( tickRect ) ) {
                paintTicks( g );
            if ( slider.getPaintLabels() && clip.intersects( labelRect ) ) {
                paintLabels( g );
            if ( slider.hasFocus() && clip.intersects( focusRect ) ) {
                paintFocus( g );
            if ( slider.getPaintTrack() && clip.intersects( trackRect ) ) {
                paintTrack( g );
            if ( clip.intersects( thumbRect ) ) {
                paintThumb( g );
    }You use this class by saying:    JSlider slider = new JSlider(JSlider.HORIZONTAL,0,100,10);
        slider.setPaintTicks(true);
        slider.setPaintLabels(true);
        slider.setMajorTickSpacing(10);
        slider.setMinorTickSpacing(2);
        slider.setUI(new eBasicSliderUI(slider));

    Sharan,
    The code given was part of the assignment and you are supposed to make the changes for your part right?
    Please give details of what you have done so far and not expect us to do your assignment for you. We'll be glad to help answer questions and point to the right direction, but giving us the entire assignment and saying, very nicely I might add, "Please do it for me." Just seems to make a mockery of the hours, days, and years that many of us has spent earning our degrees and learning our skills.
    Work on it and ask specific questions with examples of what you have done and you'll get a much better response.

  • JSlider + Display value in a text tool tip box

    Hello,
    I am new to Java. I want to display the value in a text tool tip box of the JSlider as the user moves the knob . Is there any way to achieve this.
    I tried setting up the value of text tool tip in the stateChanged method. But that didn't helped
    Ritesh

    Finally Got it working. Below I am attaching the code for reference
    Thanks for your code. It came very handy
    The only problem is that toolTextTip is appearing on one side rather than below the cursor.

  • How to disable (grey-out) the ticks of a JSlider?

    Hi everyone,
    In my GUI, I have a JSlider that I want to be disabled (greyed out)
    because it should be only actived on my application next version.
    (It is important though to have it to preserve GUI appearence).
    Problem is that I was unable to greyout the ticks even though
    already managed to grey out the slider and the number labels.
    Right now, it is pretty uggly to have a partial disabled slider,
    because due to ticks not being disabled.
    Questions:
    1) Does anyone have an idea of how to do it?
    A small part of my code is shown below:
    JSlider dynSl = new JSlider();
    dynSl.setMajorTickSpacing(1);
    dynSl.setValue(0); //Default
    dynSl.setMaximum(7);
    dynSl.setMinimum(0);
    dynSl.setPaintLabels(true);
    dynSl.setPaintTicks(true);
    dynSl.setFont(new java.awt.Font("Dialog", 0, 9));
    dynSl.setSnapToTicks(true);
    dynSl.setEnabled(false);
    // small code just to put the numbers of the slider smaller
    Enumeration enum = dynSl.getLabelTable().elements();
    while (enum.hasMoreElements()) {
    JLabel elem = (JLabel)enum.nextElement();
    elem.setFont(new Font("Dialog",0,8));
    elem.setEnabled(false);
    2) If not possible, how do I change the colour of a JSlider (including
    the Ticks)?
    My idea is to change Slider's colour to the same grey colour one used
    to disable it, making at the end the slider look as if it was disabled.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jorge

    Hi again,
    Thanks for the help.
    I was trying to avoid not having the ticks at all but it seems to be
    the best choise because I could not solve the problem of greying out
    them.
    I did some more troubleshooting though and for my surprise, if I use
    the same code alone, i.e, a simple frame with just the slider it works
    fine. I even thought that it was related with having Windows LnF as
    opposed to Metal (Java) LnF, but that was not the problem.
    The only thing it comes to mind, is that there may be some problem by including the slider on a GridBagLayout !?!?!?
    Anyway,
    What has no simple solution, solved is! :-)

  • Is there any way to animate a JSlider and a JProgressBar?

    Hi all,
    I'm working on an assignment using JSliders and JProgressBars in a Java application. I've been trying to let my JSlider and JProgressBar move by itself i.e. reset the slider's current value to a new one after a specific period of time...Tried using a timer and thread but just can't seem to get it moving. Is there any way to set the JSlider to update itself after a specified time period? Same goes for JProgressBar?
    At my wits' end, really appreciate if anyone can offer me some advice and help...Thanks.

    Hmm...use a timertask that resets the value and triggers a repaint in the event thread? That should work at least in theory.

  • Java using GUI's mixed with opengl... needs help...urgent....

    guys, i need help.... is anyone there have an idea about opengl...? ill attach 4 files that needs to be enhanced or debug for possible errors. to see the canvas... you should have atleast all the needed lib and jar of opengl in your pc.
    its urgent, its for our thesis actually....ill be dividing the codes with the use of (" **** ")sign...

    enhanced or debug for possible errors. i hate to break it to you, but even if you post this for the seventh time, finding and fixing errors in your code remains your task.

    4 widgets???
    maybe this is what you mean.
    add this inside your actionPerformed method for the reset action
    squareButton.setSelected(true);
    colorComboBox.setSelectedIndex(0);
    if not be more clear in your post.

  • Using my new GUI component in an applet :Help!!!

    I am seeking help for the following
    Define class MyColorChooser as a new component so it can be reused in other applications or applets. We want to use the new GUI component as part of an applet that displays the current Color value.
    The following is the code of MyColorChooser class
    * a) We define a class called MyColorChooser that provides three JSlider
    * objects and three JTextField objects. Each JSlider represents the values
    * from 0 to 255 for the red, green and blue parts of a color.
    * We use wred, green and blue values as the arguments to the Color contructeur
    * to create a new Color object.
    * We display the current value of each JSlider in the corresponding JTextField.
    * When the user changes the value of the JSlider, the JTextField(s) should be changed

    Yes, I want help for the missing code to add in actionPerformed method below. As a result, when you confirm the selected color (clicking the OK button), it will be transferred to a variable color of class ShowMyColor.

  • Help with scrollRectToVisible

    Hey,
    I am having a problem using the scrollRectToVisible method on a JScrollPane. I have an application where the layout is like so:
    JSplitPane (splitPane)
    ->JPanel on the right side (rightPanel) (and ignoring the left for now)
    -->rightPanel contains a JScrollPane (rightScrollPane)
    --->rightScrollPane contains a dynamically sizable JPanel (contentPanel). Dynamically changes size via a JSlider (scaleSlider) When the user interacts with the scaleSlider it changes the width of the contentPanel and will introduce a scrollBar in the rightScrollPane if the contentPanel grow larger than the viewport area. In the viewport of the rightScrollPane I would like to always display an area of the contentPanel that dynamically changes in respect to the size of the contentPanel. I am having problems with this: here is my code:
    private void scaleSliderStateChanged(ChangeEvent e) {
        JSlider source = (JSlider)e.getSource();
        int scale = source.getValue();
        contentPanel.setSize(new Dimension(scale, contentPanel.getHeight()));
        contentPanel.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(scale, contentPanel.getHeight()));
        //for brevity lets say the area of the contentPanel i want to display is
        //always in the center (width/2).
        Rectangle tempRect = contentPanel.getBounds();
        tempRect.setBounds(tempRect.width/2, 20, 200, 200);
        rightScrollPane.getViewport().scrollRectToVisible(tempRect);
        So i think that the this should produce a rectangle which is has an inital x location that is half the width, an inital y = 20, whose width and height is 200. All that really matters to me here is that the inital x location is in the viewport all the time. I would think that this should allow the user to manipulate the scaleSlider and in effect change the width of the contentPanel furthermore always retaining the same horizontally centered location of the contentPanel in the rightScrollPane.
    However upon execution and manipulation of the scaleSlider the width of the contentPanels width is changed as desired, however the horizontal scroll bar immediately moves to the far right and stays there. Can anyone tell me what i am doing wrong here?
    thanks in advance for your help.

    scrollRectToVisible() is really meant to be used on the component added to the scrollPane. So in your case the panel you just resized.
    If that doesn't work then add the code to a SwingUtilities.invokeLater(...) to make sure it gets executed after all currently queued events get processed.
    Finally if that doesn't work, the try using the setViewPostion() method of the JViewport.
