Help on opening read only Windows files

Hello, i hope someone can help.
I have changed to Mac OS server from a windows 2000 based file sharing machine users have both mac os and windows xp. All files were copied over to the OS server and access etc has not been an issue until now!
Recently I have come across some files which have windows based read only attributes applied by the windows based user. These files are sent to me by clients, they are CAD drawing files.
The problem is no user can open these files, the message from a windows XP machine is the file is in use or read only do you want to open as read only. Selecting yes and the result is you do not have permissions to read this. Permissions are fine for the folder as other files in the same folders are read and written fine if they do not have the read only attribute.
If viewing in Mac OS the icon for these files have a padlock in the bottom left.
So i try to change the read only attribute and both windows XP and mac os say i do not have permission, even when logged on as the administrator. Also cannot copy them from the server to the XP machine via the XP machine.
I can copy via the mac server admin to an XP machine then change the attribute and copy it back to the server and of course it works fine.
Problem to solve is, I now see while scanning through I have several hundreds of these files spread through hundreds of folders. Is there any way to change this permission on all files starting at the root folder in one hit or at least change them via Mac Os?
Any help would be much appreciated, sorry to be so long winded.
Cheers, Paul

I'm having exactly the same problem on a Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server with opening files on Windows 7 machines using SolidWorks 2010. All permissions seem to correct.
Propagating permissions through these files and folders doesn't have any effect.
All Sharepoints are on a FW800 Hard disk.

  • Can't open Read-Only Word Files

    Hi,
I can't open word files that windoze has arked as Read-Only with pages 08. I get the error message, "the document FILENAME couldnt be opened."
    Anyone got ideas..

    Hi folks,
I've solved the problem, so if anyone else is having the problem, I solved it this way. The files were on a memory stick, so when I read this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106712 it became obvious that if a dragged the files into my Documents folder OS X should give the correct file permissions automatically and it did. Well done Apple.
The link also gives info on how to do this manually if you need help.

  • Disable Save or Save As for Read Only mpp file

    Hi,
I have a read only mpp file and need to make sure that it cannot be Saved / Saved As by anybody in Team. They should only have access to view the file.
How can enable a file which does not allow save / save as?

    ihvarrived,
You didn't mention anything about being in a Project Server environment, so I assume Shiva's response has no meaning for you.
With regard to an approach to prevent unauthorized users from saving a file let me again stress that, in my opinion, the best approach for this issue is training. That has the great advantage of mutual respect and cooperative effort in a team environment.
To implement a more covert approach you will need to do the following:
    1. With the file open go to Developer/Code group/Visual Basic
    2. Hit the Project Explorer icon
    3. In the Explorer hierarchy, under the VBAProject double click on the "ThisProject"
    4. In the code window, paste the following code:
Private Sub project_open(ByVal pj As MSProject.Project)
MsgBox "This file is write protected. You can make changes" & vbCr & _
"for temporary what-if scenarios, but you will not be" & vbCr & _
"able to save without the correct password", vbExclamation, "Warning!"
    End Sub
Private Sub project_beforesave(ByVal pj As MSProject.Project)
    pass = InputBox("enter save password")
If pass <> "xyz" Then  'string in quotes is the password you chose for saving, "xyz" is for illustration only
        SelectAll
        EditDelete
    End If
    End Sub
    5. While still in the code window, go to Tools/VBA Project Properties/Protection tab
    6. Check the "Lock this project" option
    7. Enter and confirm a password. It can be the same as your save password or a different password (This will insure that only you can view and modify the above code)
    8. Hit OK, then File/Save [your filename] to capture your macro in the file. Note, at this point you will be required to enter your save password.
Be advised that if a user does attempt to save without the correct save password, the file will be zeroed out and saved (i.e. nothing). That means that whenever you save the file you should also save a backup under a different name, so you can restore the
file if necessary. I couldn't figure out a good way to work around this problem. If the user always tries a "Save As" this wouldn't be an issue, but if they chose "Save" and you don't have a backup, you're screwed.
If this answers your question or is at least helpful, please mark it accordingly.

  • Collect signatures workflow - Signatures can't be added or removed because this document was opened read-only

Hi, I have configured a "Collect Signatures" workflow for test Word document(.docx), then uploaded it to sample SP 2010 doc library  (content type "Document").  This Word document has 2 empty Signature Lines in it.
After that i'm starting the Collect Signatures workflow on it , which is assigned to me and other user from my Active Directory.
Workflow is started and after that i'm receiving mail about assigned task which also contains link to document.
When i click on link it opens IE which contains SP library file path, after a while doc is opened in Word client in Read-only mode. When i want to sign the document info window pops up : "Signatures can't be added or removed because this document was opened
read-only" and i'm not able to compete task/sign doc from Word.
It is possible to sign the document when i go to SP library and opens this file directly from there (file drop-down menu-> open in MS Word).
I saw that this behaviour is similar to this article:
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sharepoint/en-US/31ba43ec-b04e-428d-9a66-0cc571934197/collect-signatures-workflow-using-firefox-not-showing-workflow-task-this-document-requires-your?forum=sharepointgeneralprevious
but i'm using IE so it shouldn't be Active X issue.
I have also checked this MS Fix:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2661910
but changing CA settings to Permissive didn't help
    Any ideas ?

    Hi bezcisnien,
I could not reproduce this issue.
When you open this file directly by clicking the document Name link from SharePoint library, is there a
yellow message bar in Word document?
Did this happen to all users on all PCs?
Have you checked if it is a client side issue, test with different IE 8/9/10 versions for this issue (and IE compatibility mode, add-ons, trusted site zone etc)?
    Thanks,

  • Startup command starts database but alter database open read only gives error

    Hi,
I'm having some strange behavior. I've 10.2.0.3 database on windows 2003.
The startup command starts database without any issues.
But if I try following it gives error.
    startup mount (successful no errors)
alter database open read only; gives error that file Mnnnnnn is missing.
Why this is happening and how to fix it?
    Thanks.

You really need to show us exactly what Oracle is telling you, using copy and paste, so we can have some clue.  You can hide details like instance and host names if they show up.
I'm wondering if you had some messed up offline datafile in a tablespace, where Oracle handles it with startup, but gets upset when you try to open read-only.  It's some bizarro sequence of events like: add a datafile to a tablespace, decide that was a mistake, alter it offline, then remove it from the OS without telling Oracle any more about it.  I've come back from vacation to find scenarios like this, it winds up being a time-bomb trying to recreate a standby later.  Or something like that, I could be unremembering some details.

  • Lion administrator setting changed to read only for file sharing. Now hung machine

I was trying to network my Mac with a WIndows 7 machine and tried to have my name in the file sharing read write instead of other users such as administrator   when I changed the administrator to read  only for file sharing rights and could not add my name as a file sharing user with read write permissions Really silly move
I have performed a repair of disk permissions however still hung.
Whats worse is that my time machine for the last three days has been disconnecting when backing up leaving a partially complete backup. Backup failed. I also left a apple support community message a few days ago to solve it.
    So its critical
    Timely HELP is needed.

This same problem happened to me, all the sudden one day my mac decided to revert to the original standard root username and password which I obviously did not know. In order to change this:
    1) Activate single user mode on reboot as by pressing cmd + s as your computer starts up. Make sure you do it right away, and keep the keys pressed down.
    2) Where the cursor pops up, type exactly
    +/sbin/mount - uw/+
    3) When the next cursor pops up type exactly
    passwd
    4) Then you can type any password you want (now changing the root password to be what you want)
Note you will not be able to see what you type, but the text is being recognized
5)The computer asks for you to retype the password, retype it
    6) Type reboot
Once the computer restarts you can navigate to system preferences>accounts> and then unlock the account (lock is located on the bottom left corner) using Username: root and the password you just set. Henceforth, you can appoint your account as the administrator. Hope it works!

  • Download read only excel file

    Hi Experts,
How to download a READ ONLY excel file to workstation (local Machine).

    Hi kaleemullah,
Steps to create a BDC program.
    1. Create an internal table with fields same as Excel sheet fields.
    2. Declare an internal table with BDCDATA table to store the BDC recording.
    3. Declare an internal table with BDCMSGCOL to store the error messages after
    the execution of the BDC.
    4. Write the code using the fun. module ALSM_EXCEL_TO_INTERNAL_TABLE
to upload the data from the excel sheet.
    5. loop that internal table and write the Subroutines to fill the internal table
BDCDATA with the recording of a specified Transaction Code.
    6. Using Call Transaction execute the BDC recording.
    7. Check Sy-subrc = 0 and store the error messages in the internal table.
    8. If you want you can pass those error records to a session using the SESSION method.
Here is an example of a BDC program, but this program is from a text file. Change the function module WS_UPLOAD with ALSM_EXCEL_TO_INTERNAL_TABLE
to upload an excel and write the program with your BDC recording. You can do recording using t-code SHDB.

we want to migrate the bpel to new SOA version so we did export and deploy to new SOA Domain.
the location of the file adapter is the same.
but when the BPEL processes deployed its start to run for all the files that are in this location- that the file adapter define on .
even the original soa tooks those files and start the BPEL processes for each one of them. also the new SOA that we did deploy to the BPEL processes take those files even if they are very old.

  • 11gR2 Real Time Apply / open read only

    Hi,
I have a single instance primary database with a physical standby. The release is 11.2.0.1.0.
    Max Availability mode
    LGWR SYNC transport
    Data Guard Broker configuration enabled
Both the primary and standby database are registered with the Grid Infrastructure (Standalone installation on each server, no cluster)
When I stop and start the standby database it seems to default to open read only using Managed Real Time Recovery.
    SQL> SELECT DEST_ID, RECOVERY_MODE FROM V$ARCHIVE_DEST_STATUS
    2> WHERE DEST_ID=2;
    DEST_ID RECOVERY_MODE
    2 MANAGED REAL TIME APPLY
I do not want to Active Data Guard on this particular database. So I removed and added the database again using srvctl this time supplying the -s mount flag. Now when I stop/start the standby it opens in mount mode and MANAGED recovery which is OK.
My question is why did the standby automatically get opened in read only. Is the a change in behaviour introduced along with Active Data Guard? Is the default behaviour for a database registered with Grid Infrastructure to simply start the database in open mode and becuase this is 11.2 standby this means open read only?
    Thanks

    Dear user234564,
This has been introduced in Oracle Database 11g Data Guard New Features and it is called the Active Data Guard. With the new release you can open the physical standby database in read only mode and the real time apply will continue as it is on the mount stage. This ability has not been granted on 10g. So i think it could be the normal behaviour.
11g physical standby database will be opened and the MRP process will still apply the archivelogs to the standby database. You can simply have it tested.
    Please refer;
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10700/manage_ps.htm#CHDGJEFF
    Let me give you a quick hint but it is off topic;
The number of standby databases that a primary database can support is increased from 9 to 30 in this release.
The capability to create 30 standby databases, combined with the functionality of the Oracle Active Data Guard option, allows the creation of reader farms that can be used to offload large scale read-only workloads from a production database.Hope That Helps.

  • MS Access database opens read only

An Access application with linked databases opens read only, but sometimes is editable. The system was developed in Access 10 on a Win 7 machine and migrated to a standalone laptop running Win 8 and Office 365.
The Access 10 has no problem in operating the application. The Win 8 laptop randomly opens the application read only. I have reviewed Trust settings and there is no difference between the different laptops and systems.
Is this a common problem? Is it associated with Win 8? Is it associated with Access form Office 365? The application is crucial to the business and we are getting way behind because we don't have a reliable or useful system. Last year the same application
ran satisfactorily on Win 7 and Access 10.
I would welcome some thoughts leading too a solution.

    Hi,
Did you get the error message like "You are trying to open a read-only database". If yes, this issue may be due to the permission of the Access database. If we migrate the Access database from Access 2010 to Access 2013, the user/account's permission
may be changed with different Windows operation system. We need the full control permission of the Access database. To workaround this issue, follow these steps:
On the desktop, double-click My Computer.
Locate the Microsoft Access database that you moved.
Right-click the database name, and then click Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, clear the Read-only check box under
    Attributes.
Click OK to apply the change.
    Open your database in Access.
Please note: Make sure the user has full control of the root folder.
If no, please tell us the whole error message, we'd like to do further troubleshooting.

  • Search help unavailable in Read-only input field since EHP4

    Dear Experts!
I have a problem with a Portal page since the deploy of the EHP4. The page has standard input fields with Search Helps. I needed to have the input field non-modifiable so the user would have to use the search help to get the proper information.
Prior to the EHP4 installation, I set the input field to Read Only in the WebDynpro explorer, this disabled the editing while permitting the user to use the Search Help.
Since the installation, the search help is no longer visible or accessible on a Read Only standard inputfield.
Do you know if there is a way to allow the search help on a read only field?
Thanks so much for your answer,
    Brian Foster.

    >Since the installation, the search help is no longer visible or accessible on a Read Only standard inputfield.
This was a conscious design decision on SAP's part that disabled or read-only fields should no longer fire value help.  I am aware that this situation was used in the past as you describe.  It is even still used in SE80 for the Web Dynpro ABAP wizards. However usability studies showed that this often confused end users and therefore it is no longer allowed.  The field must be input enabled to fire the attached serach help.
