Help Required on Creating and Maintaining an Apple Network Without a Server

Hi,
I'm an external IT technician for a new educational block at a hospital who intend on using apple mac computers alongside windows computers running off of a windows server..
I usually deal with windows XP as an operating system so OSX is relatively new to me..
Basically what I have is a suite of 6 iMacs which are all sharing files from the windows server via a network share drive I set up. I've just got off the phone with the project manager and she wishes to have individual logons for each member of staff and student here, this adds up to around 25 people..
I have allready created a generic "teacher" and "student" logon which has all of the right things in the dock + settings etc that I need. Is there an easy way to duplicate those settings to create new profiles?
I'm just trying to look for ways of making this easier for myself and for the school in the future.. I have a feeling that the ideal solution would be to have an apple server installed and manage the users from there but I don't think that it was considered at the time of purchase..
So can anyone help me out? I'll be grateful for any tips or advice on creating and maintaining this system as I'm due to support this place for the next year.
Thanks alot,
Martin

  • Using SSDT-BI in Visual Studio 2012 to create and maintain SSRS, SSAS, SSIS in SQL Server 2008 R2

    Hi,   My management is wanting all the developers (database and .net) to upgrade from Visual Studio 2008 to Visual Studio 2012.  We are currently using SQL Server 2008 R2 for our data warehouse and using Business Intelligence (SSIS,
    SSAS, and SSRS) to maintain it.  Our database team is also wanting to create database projects and include that in our Team Foundation Server 2010 code repository along with our BI code.  From what I've been able to research googling the
    internet is there are two products available SSDT and SSDT-BI which can be installed into VS2012, but it appears that only SSDT for database projects is the only thing that will work until we someday upgrade to SQL Server 2012.  Most of the information
    I've found on the internet regarding this subject is over a year old and a lot can change in a year.  So my questions are can we install VS2012 and both SSDT and SSDT-BI to create and maintain the SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS currently in our SQL Server 2008
    R2 database?  If we can install these three items, VS2012 and the two SSDTs, and are able to create new BI and maintain our current BI in our SS2008R2 database then what issues might we have with our TFS2010 code repository?  We prefer
    to use only VS2012 or VS2008 but not both at the same time.  If we can't do everything we are currently doing in VS2008 with our SS2008R2 database by switching to VS2012 and the two SSDTs then we will stay with VS2008 until we someday upgrade
    to SS2012.  Please advise and thank you.  James M.

    I'm going to move this to the SSAS blog, where most SSDT-BI questions are answered (this forum mainly answers SSDT questions). Someone there may be able to give you better information but here's what I know:
    - I think you'll only need to install SSDT-BI since you're using SSIS, SSAS and SSRS. SSDT is the database tooling which it sounds like you wouldn't use, and it's actually built into VS2012 in any case.
    - SSIS projects don't work with earlier versions of SQL Server, but SSAS and SSRS do. Details are on
    this blog post. I don't have enough knowledge to suggest workarounds or best practices for handling the SSIS issue. Perhaps you could keep 2 projects, or 2 branches of the same project (one for 2012, one for 2008) if that's possible? I think your BIDS projects
    will be upgraded to SSDT-BI compatible projects so it's work checking them into source control, upgrading, then comparing to understand what's changed. You might be able to keep the same overall source and just change a few settings in the different branches?
    Hopefully someone on the SSAS forum can help give you more information and suggestions.

  • How do I create and use an Apple ID without a credit card or gift card?

    My brother just bought a Ipod touch 2nd generation, ios 4.2.1, but I was trying all day yesterday trying to setup his Apple ID, but it keeps asking for his credit card. I read through some other posts that said to download a free app and it'll give you the coice to create a new account. So I did that. I filled out all of the information and it let me select "None" as the billing information, so I thought it was all set. He verified the account through his e-mail, it said "Your email has been verified", so he tried to sighn into the app store using his e-mail he verified, but it said something like "This ID hasn't been used on this device". The only options were Cancel or Review, so I clicked review and it took me to the registration thing again, all of the info was already filled out, except the billing info which wouldn't let me select "None".
      I tried sighning his account on to my ipod touch, it did the same thing as his, He's sighned in with mine right now, but whenever he downloads something, it downloads for me too.
       So if you can help, I'd really appriciate it, because it pretty annoying.

  • HT2534 create and use an apple id without credit card

    According to Apple support (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2534) - i can create an apple id without credit card details.
    In practice you cant, as both on iPad/iPhone and on PC you dont have the "Payment type - None" option
    Have you manage to bypass this?
    Is there a reason why this page is not updated per the actual use?

    In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
    To open your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
    do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
    You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
    Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
    WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • Where to create and maintain rule modeler

    Hi Experts,
                       Where can I create and maintain Rule Modeler to set up ERMS, and kindly provide what are the steps required to maintain rule modeler. thanks
    Regards,
    Lakshmana.P

    Hello,
    It depends a little on the CRM release you are using. In older versions of CRM up to CRM 5.0, the Rule Modeler is accessed from the Netweaver (Enterprise) Portal via the IC Manager role (though it can also be launched directly using the BSP application from SAP GUI). In CRM 2006s/CRM 2007 and CRM 7.0 the Rule Modeler is available in the CRM WebClient from the IC Manager business role. It's located under the menu heading, "Process Modeling".
    Best regards,
    John

  • How to create and maintain a backup catalog, separate from default  location,  on and external HD

    How to create and maintain a backup catalog on a separate hd - separate from default location of the catalog?

    Simply copy the LR catalog backup file to another location. It’s quite small and only contains metadata e.g. your edit develop settings, keywords, captions, titles and camera exif data etc.
    The LR backup does not physically copy your image files. So make sure you have a separate system backup for your photo files and folders.

  • FAQ at the top permanently, created and maintained by GB

    HangTime has an excellent FAQ post, or two, which we should look at before whining to the group about our problems. This might be the starting point for a GB FAQ, permanently at the top, created and maintained by GB. If HangTime gave his consent to the use of his materials. (a round of applause for HangTime).
    Sonar does have such a FAQ, a very good one, permanently at the top and created by a Sonar.
    Huh? Huh?

    Yeah, there's a guy in the LE forum that is doing one up in hopes of having it be a static feature as well. I showed him HT's in case there was (and I know there is) info that pertains to both apps.

  • HT5622 Why does my credit car decline when I'm trying to review my credit card details? I'm trying to creat and finish  my apple login but it keeps saying declined. Does Apple charge credit cards just for registering a credit card??

    Why does my credit car decline when I'm trying to review my credit card details? I'm trying to creat and finish  my apple login but it keeps saying declined. Does Apple charge credit cards just for registering a credit card??

    Just to add to AnaMusic's list:
    Does Apple charge credit cards just for registering a credit card??
    Yes, Apple will validate the credit card, when you are setting up the account information for an Apple ID. The credit card must be valid in the country of the store, that you are trying to buy from. And the card you are using must neither be blocked by the issuer of the card nor by the Apple for store services.
    The error message  you are citing is misleading: The error message could either mean
    that you are using the wrong type of card (Are you using a debit card or a credit card?)
    that the AppeID or the credit card you are using has been blocked for security reasons,
    or that you are encountering a store error, because you are trying to use the iTunes Store or AppStore from a country, where it is not yet supported.

    wouldn't it make a difference if the SSD was an Apple product?  And can't you order just the Apple SSD?  At the local Apple store many of the geniuses won't touch it if it's a third party item.

  • How are ePrint apps created and maintained?

    Just bougt a new small HP printer for my home office and discovered ePrint and apps support. And amazed, did not expect this technology in entry level small/home office type printers.
    And immediately new questions on what possibilities this opens up for printing applications
    What is required to create new apps?
    Is it possible to use this technology to add local office apps? I.e. to print site/office specific forms, trivial network interactions and maybe a bit more.
    Is subscription type apps supported/allowed, where the app is only available as part of a third party subscription package?
    A lot can be built around the email based ePrint service alone, but having ability to also do some simple interaction with the user at the printer would open for a wide range of new possible uses.

  • Help required on Encryption and Signing.

    Hello All,
    Client:
    Client is having his own Private key and the public key of the Server.
    Server:
    Server is having his own Private key and the public keys of all the clients.
    When a client wants to send a document to the server with both encryption and signed,
    then he will encrypt the document with the server's public key and then sign the encrypted document
    with his own Private key.
    And then sends it to the server.
    When the server receives the signed object from the client, he has to verify the signature with
    the public key of the client and he has to decrypt the document with the Pirvate key of the server.
    How can we verify the signature?
    By just saying,
    Signature sig = Signature.getInstance("SHA1withRSA");
    sig.initVerify(kp.getPublic());
    boolean verifies = sig.verify(realSig);
    where "realSig" is the signed object.
    In this case i am unable to verify the signature. Even if i succeeded here in verifying the signature,
    how do i decrypt the signed object.
    My question is,
    When the client sends signed object to server, does he sends anything else along with it?
    Say for example if he sends the encrypted document along with the signed object then if i say,
    Signature sig = Signature.getInstance("SHA1withRSA");
    sig.initVerify(kp.getPublic());
    sig.update(cipherText);
    boolean verifies = sig.verify(realSig);
    where "cipherText" is the encrypted document.
    In this case i am able to verify the document and since i will have the encrypted document
    along with the signed object i will decrypt this using the Private key of the server.
    So is it must and should that i need to send the encrypted document everytime along with the signed object to the server.
    Thanks and have a nice time.

    I have two suggestions for you
    First read a good book about cryptography. Even using secure cryptographic algorithms is no guarantee that your solution is secure. Without thorough understanding of cryptography and security someone might break in due to some implementation mistake in your security mechanism. My recommendations: "Applied Cryptography" written by Bruce Schneier and "An Introduction to Cryptography (IntrotoCrypto.pdf)" by Phil Zimmermann, Network Associates. This PDF document can be downloaded as part of the free PGP product from http://www.pgp.com, http://www.pgpi.com or http://www.nai.com
    Second take a serious look at S/MIME. S/MIME allows information to be wrapped in signed and/or encrypted data blocks in a secure way. The S/MIME standard is around for a few years and has been thoroughly reviewed. Bouncycastle (www.bouncycastle.org) contains an library for creating and handling S/MIME data. Never invent your own formats when a standard is available. More information about S/MIME can be found at RSA labs (www.rsa.com or www.rsalabs.com).

  • Is it possible to use an Apple Time Capsule simply as a network attached storage device on my existing (non-Apple) network (without using it to create or extend a WiFi network)?

    My netowrk is working fine, but I would like to use the Time Capsule simply as a storage device for backups, etc.

    Plug into the TC with ethernet.. although you can do it by wireless if you need to..
    In the airport utility change the network tab from DHCP + NAT to Off (bridge mode).
    That is from v6 utility in the Mac.. different for v5 utility in windows if that is what you use.
    with the TC in bridge it is just a dumb switch and AP on the network.. plus a network hard disk.
    If you are using it just for backups that is fine.. but remember the TC is not a real NAS.. storing files on the TC is fraught.. because it has no way to back itself up and Time Machine cannot backup the TC.

  • How can I use Airport Express to create a standalone Wi-Fi network without Internet Access so I can browse web pages on the local network? I will be using MAMP as my server (Apache)

    I would like to create my own Wi-Fi standalone network at an upcoming tradeshow where there will be NO internet access.
    Currently, I run and develop sites on my iMac use MAMP to manage my sites locally. Using MAMP, I run my sites as though they are on the internet although everything is local.
    I purchased an Airport Express hoping I could create a standalone network so that the iMac would broadcast its website to whatever device connects to it such as my iPhone, iPad and MacBookPro.
    However, after setting up the network successfully (I have a green light on the Airport Express, and there is NO internet going through it), I  am  not able to go any further by logging into the iMac's websites from the other machines. Form my MacBookPro Finder, I can look at files and folders using afp://10.0.1.2, from the Find/Go/Connect to Server utility, but I can't browse the website that is running on the iMac via the Safari browser.
    Can anyone help me configure my MacBookPro (or iPad, or iPhone) to run the website on the iMac when they are all on the same network?
    Thanks so much!!

    1) connecting the TC using a ethernet cable from one of the two modem's LAN ports to the TC's WAN port
    2) create a new Wi-Fi network using the TC ?
    Does someone already create a new Wi-Fi network using its TC connected by Ethernet on a modem/router device ? How do you set up the DHCP (and NAT) ? Which range did you use ?
    This is easy enough to do..
    Plug the TC directly into a computer.. without other connections to do the setup.
    Using the newly installed 5.6 utility.
    Bridge the TC.
    Create a wireless network.
    This is an older screen shot and I would set security to WPA2 Personal only not WPA/WPA2 Personal as shown above.
    I do recommend you use wireless names that are short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    Update the TC..
    Now plug it into the modem router.. it will be a part of the network without doing NAT and DHCP itself.. which you do not want.. that leads to double NAT issues.. but it is a WAP that provides access to devices on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands directly to the main router.
