Help! setMaxInactiveInterval(-1), will it create resource leak on Server?

Hi,
I have a session that is set to have infinite timeout by setMaxInactiveInterval(-1). While browsing a page, the user closes his browser session.
Does the server know when to destroy this session? Will this create a resource leak on the server?
Is there any common way to get around it (assuming I have to use infinite timeout sessions)? Or is pretty much by definition the implication of infinite timeout sessions?
Thanks,
Eric.

Does the server know when to destroy this session?Yes. After an infinite amount of time has passed. (Assuming that's really the meaning of the parameter, I don't have quick access to the documentation.)
Will this create a resource leak on the server?Only if you have an unlimited number of distinct users. Otherwise you will over the long run have one session per user littering your server.
Is there any common way to get around it (assuming I
have to use infinite timeout sessions)? Or is pretty
much by definition the implication of infinite
timeout sessions? One way would be to allow the sessions to time out in a sensible way, and when that happens, dump their data into a database. Then when the user reconnects two weeks later, retrieve the data from the database and put it into the new session.

    Thorsten,
testpool created in one of the cluster nodes and is accessible from both the nodes in the cluster. But if it is imported in one node and will not be access from other node. If other node want to get access we need to export and import testpool in other node.
Storage LUNs allocated to testpool are accessible from all the nodes in the cluster and able import and export testpool from all the nodes in the cluster.

  • Finalize prevents "resource leak"?

As far as I can tell, " +Effective Java+ " (by Joshua Bloch) is the most recommended Java text. Therefore, I am assuming the author is credible, maybe on par with the best on this forum. Then, here is a quote from the book:
".... there is a severe performance penalty for using finalizers... So what should you do instead of writing a finalizer for a class whose objects encapsulate resources that require termination, such as files or threads? Just provide an explicit termination method, and require clients of the class to invoke this method on each instance when it is no longer needed."
I question the advisability of designing a class such that the design says "oh. by the way. when you are done using an instance of it, don't forget to call this method." Would not such a design lead to hard to find, easy to forget, resource leaks (same idea as memory leaks ). Is such a (dangerous?) practice used in real-world apps?
    btw:
The issue of finalizers arose while reading about java.awt.Graphics . I read that if "g.dispose()" was not called on every instance of Graphics , if run long enough, with 100% certainity, an app would come crashing down. Some resource is exhausted. Know when it must be explicitly called, and then always put that method in a finalize block.

    tatsuke wrote:
    try {
    ArrayList<Double> list = new ArrayList<Double>();
    for(int d = 0; d < Double.MAX_VALUE;d++) {  list.add(new Double(d));  }
    } catch (java.lang.OutOfMemoryError e) {
// forces gc to kill all possible objects, each's finalize block is executed?
// next, not sure what to do in any practical sense.
// just checking that i understand what is going on.
First of all, If I ever find any code like this in an production environment during a code review, then the author of that code will get a very strict talking-to at least.
I can't begin to tell you how wrong this is and at how many levels.
First of all: Who tells you that the OOM-Error is thrown in this code and not in an entirely unrelated code in another Thread that happens to be the first one to request too large a block of memory? (Not unlikely, since you allocate a lot of tiny objects and the OOM-barrier can easily be hit by another thread that tries to allocate a 512k buffer for some I/O operation.
Next: you're taxing the memory settings of the JVM, forcing it to go up to its maximum size, even when the actual requirement would a fraction of the maximum size and thus potentially forcing your application (and others) into swap and slowing them down to a grinding halt, effectively producing a denial-of-service.
Next: you produce an infinite loop, because you'll never reach Double.MAX_VALUE (try printing "Double.MAX_VALUE" and "Double.MAX_VALUE - 1d" and tell me the difference).
Next: no-one said that it's possible that the object is never collected and never finalized in all situations. Of course there are situations when it has to be collected (OOM is about the only one that comes to my mind, at the moment). But that doesn't mean that you can rely on finalize() being called in all situations. Note that nothing in the spec tells you that the GC must run when you run out of file descriptors. Running the GC could help, if someone forgot to close a stream, but it is not enforced.
Next: yes, I'm pissed of at something entirely unrelated and you just happen to be there. Sorry for that. I still think the content of my comments is correct.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • ITunes Consolidation: Will it create duplicates of media files if they already exist in the new itunes destination folder but arent being referenced by the itunes library?

I have a macbook pro from fall 2010. I have been using my external HD as my primary itunes folder for the past 7 yrs ( i.e it is organized by itunes default categorization, etc). However, there is some overlap between my external HD itunes folder and my comps original itunes folder (probably 20-30% of my current library's media files were already duplicated there from when i first bought the HD and transferred files to the external, however they are mostly referenced from the external now). Also there are files in the comp's itunes folder that are not on my external (probably due to organizational mishaps and podcast downloads when not connected to the external, etc). I do not know how many files this is the case for.
Recently, i decided that i wanted to consolidate all of my itunes music into one concise folder on my macbook's HD to avoid these issues going forward.  I also just bought a new external which i will use to back up my comp's itunes folder once i consolidate everything to the comp. But i plan on using the itunes folder on the comp going forward or at least using the consolidate fcn to avoid these issues.
Here is my dilemma. Prior to learning of the consolidate feature today, I changed the default itunes folder in settings to the original itunes folder on the macbook and then manually dragged all of the media files from my external itunes folder to the macbook's itunes folder. There were a ton of duplicates or overlapping folders with similar artist names, so i opted to have them merge all folders where possible. After doing this, i realized the itunes library still references these files that i dragged and dropped from the external since that is where my default itunes folder used to be. At that point i then read and learned of the consolidate itunes feature which seems like the best way to do this. But i am afraid that if i consolidate my library to my macbook's itunes folder now, will it create duplicates of the 4000 + media files i just dragged to the macbook's itunes folder which are already in the itunes library but being referenced from the old external??
Question: Is there a way that i can make these files i just dragged to the macbook's itunes folder become the ones referenced by the itunes library through the consolidate feature without creating duplicates of these 4000+ files? I want to avoid having  three copies of these files (two duplicates in the itunes and the originals on the external). Furthermore, is there a best way to find out which files in the macbook's itunes folder are not being included in the library after consolidating everything to the computer's HD? Then after that, what is the best way to start backing this all up to my new external, so that this overlapping issue doesnt happen again?  Im assuming i just need to make sure to consolidate first when changing itunes folders going forward. Thank you. I know that was a lot  to read but hopefully someone can help with this issue.

    In general:
    - The best way to check if files are in a library is to drag the whole media folder to the library.  If something was missed it will be added.  If it is in the library is won't be added a second time.
    - If you have a second copy of a file and iTunes does not currently list that specific file in its database then even if it is identical to one already in the database it will add it a second time.  So if you have file xyz on the internal drive and the external drive and add them to iTunes you will end up with two entries for the same thing in iTunes because you really do have to copies of the files.  While this can happen with two copies on a single drive, it will almost definitely be the case when you have a copy of a file on two drives because iTunes really sees them as two different things.
-Unless you know how iTunes works, avoid moving files yourself.  Let the consolidate feature do all the file moving.  Manually moving files can really mess up iTunes unless you know what you are doing and have iTunes set to not try to do it itself.
    - There's no clean and easy way to delete duplicates.  The best thing is to change practice so you don't create them.   Here are  references:

    Hi Veera,
Actually you are getting a warning message where one of two things could have happened. Either you specified an incorrect zone name or one of the zones has not been fully booted. It's likely that you haven't booted the zones, so please follow this:
    zoneadm list -iv
If zone1 or zone2 are not running then boot and configure them
    zoneadm -z <zone> boot
    zlogin -C <zone>
After that you can continue to follow the step by step instructions at

  • LR 5.7.1 will not create folders on a network connected Drobo.

LR 5.7.1 on IMac2 (OS 10.9.5) will not create a folder an a Drobo that is USB connected to IMac1 (OS 10.10.2).  The two IMacs are ethernet connected through a router.  When attempting to create a folder on the Drobo from LR on IMac2 an error message from LR is displayed: "Could not complete the folder move. The folder named “2014” could not be created." A folder cannot be uniquely created from LR on the Drobo.  Folders can be created on the Drobo from the desktop of IMac2,  image files can be moved between already created folders on the Drobo and new images can be added to existing folders.  Read and Write permissions are set for all users on both iMacs.  Looking for some help on figuring this out.

Have you successfully Signed Out and back in to CC (or do you still have an error message on CC)?
Sign out, Sign in | Creative Cloud Desktop app
If not and you can't I'd guess it's still the CC that is the problem.  There have been similar issues preventing LR starting here on the forum in the past (do a search, it might help)
After that I'd try the Technical Chat if you can't find anything on the CC forum (IMHO the forums are more likely to be able to help but it might take time).

  • Failed to create resource - Error in Sun cluster 3.2

    Hi All,
I have a 2 node cluster in place. When i trying to create a resource, i am getting following error.
Can anybody tell me why i am getting this. I have Sun Cluster 3.2 on Solaris 10.
I have created zpool called testpool.
    clrs create -g test-rg -t SUNW.HAStoragePlus -p Zpools=testpool hasp-testpool-res
    clrs: sun011:test011z - : no error
clrs: (C189917) VALIDATE on resource hasp-testpool-res, resource group test-rg, exited with non-zero exit status.
clrs: (C720144) Validation of resource hasp-testpool-res in resource group test-rg on node sun011:test011z failed.
clrs: (C891200) Failed to create resource "hasp-testpool-res".

    Thorsten,
testpool created in one of the cluster nodes and is accessible from both the nodes in the cluster. But if it is imported in one node and will not be access from other node. If other node want to get access we need to export and import testpool in other node.
Storage LUNs allocated to testpool are accessible from all the nodes in the cluster and able import and export testpool from all the nodes in the cluster.

  • Bookmark restore problem: " A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. script: resource://gre/modules/PlacesUtils.jsm:1436"

I'm trying to restore bookmarks from a .json file (as xmarks keeps duplicating and corrupting my list) and Firefox often works really slowly also. I know this as I ususally get a script message errors and option to continue or stop.. In this case with restoring bookmarks everytime I try to restore with my saved .json file I get an interruption, and the message " A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. script: resource://gre/modules/PlacesUtils.jsm:1436" i stop the script (if i continue the same warning comes up) and then get half of my bookmarks restored or similar only if that, and another message telling me FF is unable to process the bookmarks!? I think this unresponsive script is the one that randomly comes up when I'm working FF hard, and causes it to run slowly- or it is a very similar looking message. Any comments and ideas appreciated .
    Running on Macbook pro 2GHz Intel Core 2Duo, 2Gb 667 Mhz DDR2 OS 10.6.8

One other thing....the same script error on Ubuntu Linux 11.10 on my old Dell. And it seems that the backup I thought I had made probably was saved incorrectly, again only half of the bookmarks I had sorted out were created in the file- i should have exported a copy as another safeguard!
