Help setting up Software Updates server?

Hi,
I'm trying to set up an Apple Software Updates server inside my network (to save bandwidth) but I'm a PC geek, not a mac maniac so I'm a bit confused about how I need to apply the update server's location to the client computers. I think I need the use the workgroup manager but I really have only a very limited idea of how it works.
Can you please guide me through it? Or at least defer me to a how-to guide that relating to these matters.

If you have Apple Remote Desktop you can send a Unix command to change the software update URL. For me, I had to actually change it in two locations:
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http ://myserver.mycompany.net:8088/
defaults write /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http ://myserver.mycompany.net:8088/
(Note: I had to add a space after the "http" and the ":" to keep the Discussions from making a link.)

  • Setting the Software Update Server on Snow Leopard, Leopard and Tiger

I have made an app that will set the Software Update Server on Snow Leopard, Leopard or Tiger. It will set the Software Update Server by checking the Server's version to see if it is compatible with your OS version. If you try to use a Leopard (no Snow Leopard Hack (See http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10297359#10297359)) or Tiger Server with Snow Leopard it will say it is not compatible. If it is it will set it. If you are trying to use a Tiger Server with Leopard it will set it but you will only get Tiger updates.
The app is beta, if you find any problems or have any comments please reply.

You might want to look into throwing Software Update Enabler onto your clients.
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/18059
Basically, it's just a little app that points the client in the direction of the Software Update Server - you just enter the IP of the server into the config field. With a standalone server I don't think you can get the clients to see the server without something showing them the way.
It's really very tiny and simple - I believe it just edits a com.apple.softwareupdate.plist or some such, but it made life a lot easier for us in our environment.
    Hope that helps.

  • Leopard Software Update Server + Client

    Hello,
Now I have to use Mac OS X Tiger Server Software Update Server and OSX Tiger Client.
After installing OS X Tiger Server software update, I turned on the server and on apdaty do I download and have been prepared. OS X Tiger has found his client software update server, and everything worked.
Now I have OS X Leopard and Leopard Server Client.
Purely installed server and client purely installed. The server is running the server software update is downloaded updates. Leopard Client still download updates from the Internet and not from the local network and I do not know where the error. Why in the older version of all work without interference with the terminal and not now? Can someone please help me set the software update server to the client computers may not have anything set up and found this site automatically.
    Thank you
I apologize for my incorrect English

The Tiger systems must have some form of customization. SWU is not an auto-discover service. If you have one of the Tiger systems still available, enter both of these commands and report the results:
    defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate
    defaults read /Users/<adminusername>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate
Does either of the results return the custom CatalogURL value? If not, then look in NetInfo Manager and look at your MCX values. There may have been a managed preference set for all systems. However, if Tiger systems are not bound that this is not possible unless an niutil command was run to insert the value.
Also, keep in mind that if your Leopard systems are not bound to OD, and you have Apple Remote Desktop, you can use a Send Unix command and hit all of your systems in a matter of seconds. It is really rather trivial.
Also, were your Tiger machines imaged from a DMG or a NetInstall Server? It is possible that the SWU custom address was set in the master image. This is why it appears to "just work."

  • "itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet" Help?

Hello all, new to the forums.
I've been recieving the error message "itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet". This problem didn't occur at all for the past 2 years of using itunes.
I've already scanned through numerous websites and forums for help, but none of them worked.
This  set of instructions resulted in no change to any of the problems, though iTunes lists that as the supposed solution.
    # Open Internet Options from control panel.
    # Click the Connections tab.
    # Click the LAN Settings button.
    # Select the Automatically detect settings checkbox.
Others include installing IE7, which that didn't work either.
    Can anyone help?

  • Hi i am trying to install windows to my macbook through boot camp and i get this message Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server.!!!what can i do???please help me!

Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server. this is the message that i get a few days now that i am trying to install windows through boot camp to my macbook!does anybody knows what i can do????

You keep it on the usb stick for after you boot into Windows. From Windows you install the Windows Support software on the stick. Do you realize that you need to buy and install Windows? The Windows Support software you downloaded is only the Windows drivers for your hardware.
Read the Boot Camp installation instructions and help guides located here: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

  • Tried to restore my ipod touch 4th gen but it says "The ipod software update server could not be contacted" Please help!

Ok so I reset my ipod touch 4th gen and it got stuck on the apple logo screen and holding down the buttons just made it turn off for a few seconds and go straight back onto the logo screen, nothing was happening with it connecting to itunes either. But I held the home and the power button down at the same time while connected to my laptop and then when the logo reappeard I released the power button and it came up with with the itunes logo and the usb logo. It then allowed me to select restore on itunes which I did but a box popped up saying "The ipod software update server could not be contacted. make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later." Please help.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect to your computer & click on the "Update your device using iTunes".
Tip - You may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. After you update to iOS 5.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

Plese Help. Me have FAT 32 USB, ISO, Boot cam say can't install windows support software because the software update server "(null)" can't be found.
I know there are many other threads, but I guess I couldn't find clear answer to this problem. Is that the Apple's server problem or just me?
I'm trying to install Windows7 via Bootcamp, with FAT 32 formated USB with ISO, on Macbook air 2012.
    Thanks!

The problem is the encryption and how your notebook handles it rather than a Time Capsule problem. I had similar problems until I updated the WLAN drivers on my IBM T41.
The way I convinced myself it wasn't an Apple problem was to connect my IBM T41, via ethernet, to my AEBSn. I was able to connect to internet so I knew it was a conflict between my wireless card and the AEBSn.
I am now using the WPA2 encryption for the AEBS without issue and connecting many different types of hardware; three iPod Touches, two MSI Wind Netbooks (Win XP SP3), one IBM T41 (Win XP SP2) wirelessly and both my 20" iMac and Dell 8250 Win XP (SP2) by ethernet
The MSI Winds are brand new and they would connect to the AEBSn but couldn't get an IP address from the internet (Limited or No Connectivity error message). The AEBSn was using WEP encryption. After doing a little research I found that WEP was a very common cause of this error message so I switched the AEBSn to WPA2 and everything works fine now.
Don't assume that because you can't connect via OPEN it isn't a encryption issue because my Winds wouldn't connect that way either...it wasn't until I changed to the WPA2 Personal that they connected.
You may also need to change the program that handles the WLAN connection, sometimes Windows handles it better but for the newest addition to our household, the MSI Winds, I am using the Realtek utility that matches the WLAN card and everything is hunky dory...
Finally sometimes firewalls will prevent getting the IP address...doesn't happen often but it has happened to me so I would double-check that by turning off the Windows Firewall and just verify that it isn't the firewall (that's never been a problem with my Apple AEBSn but it was a problem with an older Dlink g model).
