Help with making class smaller

Here goes... I used forte to design a gui and this gui is quite large. Its over 1400 lines already without any functionality added. Is there an easy way to make this into smaller classes. If this helps I used a desktop pane and inside I made around 9 internal frames with radio buttons and such. Any help is appreciated.

You might take a look at your first posting; it has replies. :)

    Here is piece of code where I add mouse listener to the JButton object in my case is (jrbFigure1) and

    jrbFigure1.addMouseListener(new MouseAdapter() {
    jrbFigure1.addMouseListener(new MouseAdapter() {
    public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent e) {
    jlbl.setIcon(cross);
    jlbl.setText(wrong);
    This piece of code is in a switch statement, the statement is in a method.
    The JLabel jlbl object is added in a panel in the constructor of the class.
    I really hope someone could help me on this issue.

    I want the label to appear for X seconds when then button is pressed and disappear after that.Then a Swing Timer is what you want to use.
    I need to do this in a number of cases from a switch statement because I several buttons.Better to have several ActionListeners, one for each button or each type of button, rather than one ActionListener with a large switch statement, a so-called switch-board listener. They're messy to debug and upgrade.
    I tried to use Swing Timer, but I cannot set it properly.Go through the Sun Swing tutorial on Swing Timers. It's all outlined for you there: [http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/misc/timer.html]

    My server is no longer supporting the php mail() functionality.  I need to use SMTP class function with authentication in my php code and they suggested this to replace it: http://www.yrhostsupport.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/101/2/smtp-class-functi on-with-authentication-in-php-code
    So I tried it, but can't get it to work. This is my test form:

  • Please help with simple Classes understanding

    Working further to understand Class formation, and basics.
    At the Java Threads Tutorial site:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/essential/threads/timer.html
    Goal:
    1)To take the following code, and make it into 2 seperate files.
    Reminder.java
    RemindTask.java
    2)Error Free
    Here is the original, functioning code:
    import java.util.Timer;
    import java.util.TimerTask;
    * Simple demo that uses java.util.Timer to schedule a task
    * to execute once 5 seconds have passed.
    * http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/essential/threads/timer.html
    public class Reminder {
        Timer timer;
        public Reminder(int seconds) {
            timer = new Timer();
            timer.schedule(new RemindTask(), seconds*1000);
        class RemindTask extends TimerTask {
            public void run() {
                System.out.println("Time's up!");
                timer.cancel(); //Terminate the timer thread
        public static void main(String args[]) {
            new Reminder(5);
            System.out.println("Task scheduled.");
    }Here is what I tried to 2 so far, seperate into 2 seperate files:
    Reminder.java
    package threadspack;    //added this
    import java.util.Timer;
    import java.util.TimerTask;
    * Simple demo that uses java.util.Timer to schedule a task
    * to execute once 5 seconds have passed.
    * http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/essential/threads/timer.html
    public class Reminder {

        public static void main(String args[]) {
            new Reminder(5);

    }and into
    RemindTask.java
    package threadspack;  //added this
    import java.util.Timer;
    import java.util.TimerTask;
    import threadspack.Reminder; //added this
    * http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/essential/threads/timer.html
    public class RemindTask extends TimerTask
    Timer timer; /**here, I added this, because got a
    "cannot resolve symbol" error if try to compile w/out it
    but I thought using packages would have negated the need to do this....?*/
         public void run() {
                System.out.println("Time's up!");
                timer.cancel(); //Terminate the timer thread
    }After executing Reminder, the program does perform, even does the timing, however, a NullPointerException error is thrown in the RemindTask class because of this line:
    timer.cancel(); //Terminate the timer thread
    I am not sure of:
    If I have packages/import statements setup correctly
    If I have the "Timer" variable setup incorrectly/wrong spot.
    ...how to fix the problem(s)
    Thank you!

    Hi there!
    I understand that somehow the original "Timer" must
    be referenced.
    This is a major point of confusion for me....I
    thought that when importing
    Classes from the same package/other packages, you
    would have directly
    access to the variables within the imported Classes.I think you have one of the basic points of confussion. You are mixing up the concept of a "Class" with the concept of an "Object".
    Now, first of all, you do not need packages at all for what you are trying to do, so my advice is you completely forget about packages for the moment, they will only mess you up more. Simply place both .class files (compiled .java files) in the same directory. Your program is executing fine, so that indicates that the directory in which you have your main class file is being included in your classpath, so the JVM will find any class file you place there.
    As for Classes/Objects, think of the Class as the map in which the structure of a building is designed, and think of the Object as the building itself. Using the same technical map the architect defines, you could build as many buildings as you wanted. They could each have different colors, different types of doors, different window decorations, etc... but they would all have the same basic structure: the one defined in the technical map. So, the technical map is the Class, and each of the buildings is an object. In Java terminology, you would say that each of the buildings is an "Instance" of the Class.
    Lets take a simpler example with a class representing icecreams. Imagine you code the following class:
    public class Icecream{
         String flavor;
         boolean hasChocoChips;
    }Ok, with this code, what you're doing is defining the "structure" of an icecream. You can see that we have two variables in our class: a String variable with the description of the icecream's flavor, and a boolean variable indicating whether or not the icecream has chocolate chips. However, with that code you are not actually CREATING those variables (that is, allocating memory space for that data). All you are doing is saying that EACH icecream which is created will have those two variables. As I mentioned before, in Java terminology, creating an icecream would be instantiating an Icrecream object from the Icecream class.
    Ok, so lets make icrecream!!!
    Ummm... Why would we want to make several icecreams? Well, lets assume we have an icecream store:
    public class IcecreamStore{
    }Now, we want to sell icecreams, so lets put icecreams in our icecream store:
    public class IcecreamStore{
         Icecream strawberryIcecream = new Icecream(); //This is an object, it's an instance of Class Icecream
         Icecream lemonIcecream = new Icecream(); //This is another object, it's an instance of Class Icecream
    }By creating the two Icecream objects you have actually created (allocated memory space) the String and boolean variable for EACH of those icecreams. So you have actually created two String variables and two boolean variables.
    And how do we reference variables, objects, etc...?
    Well, we're selling icecreams, so lets create an icecream salesman:
    public class IcecreamSalesMan{
    }Our icecream salesman wants to sell icecreams, so lets give him a store. Lets say that each icecream store can only hold 3 icecreams. We could then define the IcecreamStore class as follows:
    public class IcecreamStore{
         Icecream icecream1;
         Icecream icecream2;
         Icecream icecream3;
    }Now lets modify our IcecreamSalesMan class to give the guy an icecream store:
    public class IcecreamSalesMan{
         IcecreamStore store = new IcecreamStore();
    }Ok, so now we have within our IcecreamSalesMan class a variable, called "store" which is itself an object (an instance) of the calss IcecreamStore.
    Now, as defined above, our IcecreamStore class will have three Icecream objects. Indirectly, our icecream salesman has now three icecreams, since he has an IcecreamStore object which in turn holds three Icecream objects.
    On the other hand, our good old salesman wants the three icecreams in his store to be chocolate, strawberry, and orange flavored. And he wants the two first icecreams to have chocolate chips, but not the third one. Well, here's the whole thing in java language:
    public class Icecream{ //define the Icecream class
         String flavor;
         boolean hasChocoChips;
    public class IcecreamStore{ //define the IcecreamStore class
         //Each icecream store will have three icecreams
         Icecream icecream1 = new Icecream(); //Create an Icecream object
         Icecream icecream2 = new Icecream(); //Create another Icecream object
         Icecream icecream3 = new Icecream(); //Create another Icecream object
    public class IcecreamSalesMan{ //this is our main (executable) class
         IcecreamStore store; //Our class has a variable which is an IcecreamStore object
         public void main(String args[]){
              store = new IcecreamStore(); //Create the store object (which itself will have 3 Icecream objects)
              /*Put the flavors and chocolate chips:*/
              store.icecream1.flavor = "Chocolate"; //Variable "flavor" of variable "icecream1" of variable "store"
              store.icecream2.flavor = "Strawberry"; //Variable "flavor" of variable "icecream2" of variable "store"
              store.icecream3.flavor = "Orange";
              store.icecream1.hasChocoChips = true;
              store.icecream2.hasChocoChips = true;
              store.icecream3.hasChocoChips = false;
    }And, retaking your original question, each of these three classes (Icecream, IcecreamStore, and IcecreamSalesMan) could be in a different .java file, and the program would work just fine. No need for packages!
    I'm sorry if you already knew all this and I just gave you a stupid lecture, but from your post I got the impression that you didn't have these concepts very clear. Otherwise, if you got the point, I'll let your extrapolate it to your own code. Should be a pice of cake!

  • Help with making part of a picture transparent

    I am very new to Indesign, and I am trying to teach myself how to use it. I was using Microsoft Publisher for my last project, in which I was able to use a transparency tool to click on part of a .gif image to make it transparent, whilst leaving the rest of the image intact.
    I am trying to place an image on top of a background image using Indesign. My image is a picture of a sun, surrounded with a white box. When I place the sun on top of the background colour, I still get the white box around the sun, and I can't find any way of eliminating the white box, whilst retaining the yellow sun image. I hope this makes sense!
    Can anyone help with his? I will need to do this quite a few times during the course of my project so any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks. Bev

    Eugene,
    Is it fair to make the sweeping statement that "GIF is not a print format"?
    I don't know how “fair” the statement is, but it’s balls accurate. GIFs are RGB, limited to 256 colours only, and have only one bit of transparency. The format is absolutely inappropriate for print.
    I can think of a few situations in which GIFs are useful for print as well as the web. For example, GIFs allow nonprofessionals to use logos with solid blocks of color, simple transparency, without color management concerns, and so on, both on the web and in almost all print applications that nonprofessionals use.
    Automatic transmissions and power steering make it possible for a recent driver’s license recipient to take the family station wagon around Laguna Seca. That doesn’t make him Emerson Fitipaldi or make the car a Formula-1 racer.
    Isn't it a cheap-and-cheerful, universal, perfectly OK format for print?
    No.
    It has limitations that are obvious to professionals, but it isn't always a mistake to use it in print.
    It sure is. Print does not mean “printed to my $60 inkjet.” Print means “printed on a digital colour printer or on a press.” In that context, GIF’s only use is as a source for later conversion to a superior format. Even if printing to a POS inket, conversion to PSD, TIF, Illustrator, PDF, or even PNG would put the image into a superior format that is more suitable for print.
    GIF is not suitable for print. Period.

    Thanks for the help in advance.

    You're not getting any help because your HTML & CSS code is pretty messy.  It's like asking an interior designer to make over a very untidy bedroom.  It's not going to happen until you clean things up.
    I would start with just the basic HTML code like this.  Avoid those redundant style10, style19, style108 tags.    You really don't need them.  HTML selectors provide you with all the hooks you need for most things.  Also, you should run a spell check.  I saw errors but I didn't fix them.

  • Help with making an Email Submit button on a form!

    Im making a form using livecycle for the first time.
    Im trying to put on it a email submit button - i used email submit field and made the button. Then in the Objects Palette, in the box that says email address i put in the email address that i want it to be sent to. I then tried to email the form, and i received an email, but the attachment was just a bunch of codes, not the form. I want the email to come through with the PDF form.
    I searched on help and this is what i found:
    3.
    In the Control Type area, select Submit. Data will be submitted according to the settings in the Submit tab.
    4.
    Click the Submit tab and type the URL protocol in the Submit to URL box.
    To
    Use this URL protocol
    Example
    Submit the package to an ftp site
    ftp
    ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/GPL
    Submit the package to a web server
    http
    http://myserver/cgi-bin/
    Submit the package to a secure web server
    https
    https://myserver/cgi-bin/
    Submit the package to an email address
    mailto
    mailto:[email protected]
    5.
    Select PDF from the Submit As list.
    I cant find where to change these options - can someone help?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    The issue is that if the form is not Reader Enabled, then users with Reader cannot submit the form as a PDF.
    They can submit it as an XML file and then you would re-import this back into the form on receipt. It is an extra step, but it does have the advantage that the data being submitted as an XML file is very small.
    If you really need/want the form to be submitted as a PDF AND your users have Reader, then the form will have to be Reader Enabled.
    There are two options:
    Reader Enable using Acrobat Standard (version 9) or Acrobat Professional (version 8). This will give certain rights, like the ability for users with Reader to save the form and for the form to be submitted as a PDF. However there are licensing restrictions, see EULA.
    The other option is to Reader Enable the form using LiveCycle Reader Extensions ES2. This is a server product, which entails additional cost and a cost to Reader Enable each form. It is intended for processing large volumes of forms/large volumes of data.
    There is a summary here:
    http://assure.ly/gYyYc2
    So there are a couple of options.
    Form NOT Reader Enabled:
    Users cannot save the data they input.
    Data must be submitted as an XML file and processed on receipt.
    Form IS Reader Enabled:
    Users can save the data they input.
    Data can be submitted as a PDF (or XML file).
    Hope that helps,

    the way this is set up is that the game over menue is a movie clip with the play again button in it i want to have a back movie clip to make it go to the first frame
    gotoAndStop(1) dosent seem to work or mabye i am doing it wrong
    this my game class file as the game over menu does not have a class file:
    package com.alienattack{
              import flash.display.MovieClip;
              import flash.events.Event;
              import flash.utils.Timer;
              import flash.text.TextField;
              import flash.text.TextFormat;
              import flash.display.Stage;

                                  gameOverMenu.y = 0;
                                  addChild(gameOverMenu);
                                  gameOverMenu.visible = false;
    gameOverMenu.playAgainButton.addEventListener("mouseDown", newGame); (this is where i think the play again button is but how would i make it so it when to the first frame)
                backgroundMusic.play(0,1000);
                        static function gameOver()
                                  gameOverMenu.visible = true;
                                  enemyShipTimer.stop();

                                  RocketShipTimer.stop();
                                  Bombtimer.stop();
                                  powerUpTimer.stop();
                                  for (var i in EnemyShip.list)

                                  gameOverMenu.visible = false;
                                  ship.visible = true;
                                  ship.x = 300;
                                  ship.y = 150;
                                  ship.takeDamage(-ship.maxHealth);
                                  ship.addEventListener("enterFrame", ship.move);
                                  resetScore();
                                  enemyShipTimer.start();
                                  miniBossTimer.start();
                                  RocketShipTimer.start();
                                  Bombtimer.start();
                                  powerUpTimer.start();

    hi

  • Help with exporting A Small AVI

    I am working on a project for school using my schools computers to edit with Premiere Pro and After Effects cs3. I edited my project and exported it through the media encoder using H2.64 codec ane exported it as a .mp4 and it was slow for the my teacher to show to the class. He says it needs to be an avi but how do i export it as an avi and not have it a large file? The mp4 was only 1.4 gb but how large should the avi be and what would be the best export settings? The clips are 1920x1080 and where converted using cineform's neoscene. Thanks you!

    The VT5 is basically a switcher with greatly enhanced capabilities, so is only one step in the chain.
    I am wondering if the computer, to which the VT 5 is installed/attached, can handle DivX material (CODEC) in an AVI wrapper. This will rely on that DivX CODEC being installed on the host computer.
    If so, you can install the DivX CODEC on your computer and then output MS AVI, choosing the DivX CODEC in the Advanced/Encoding settings. This will result in a highly-compressed file in the AVI format. Though highly-compressed, the output quality for streaming media is very good. Note: you will not need the "Pro" version of DivX, as you will be using only the CODEC (free) and letting PrPro do the encoding for you.
    Ask your instructor if the DivX CODEC will be acceptable to him/her. If so, that would be my choice for acceptable streaming quality and small file size, and it will be in the AVI "wrapper."
    You did not state if you have an SD (Standard Def), or HD (High Def) Project, or I just missed that. If SD, then the next best choice would be DV-AVI Type II file, but the file size WILL be larger, at ~ 13GB / hour Duration. I would choose this, and deliver the file on an external device, like a stick, or external HDD (7200 RPM).
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Need help with a class project

    I'm new to Java and I'm having problems converting a small program to be more functional. Here is my original codeimport java.util.Arrays;
    public class Product
    // initialize arrays
       private int cdNums[] = { 0,0,0,0 };
       private String cdNames[] = { "null", "null", "null", "null" };
       private int cdUnits[] = { 0,0,0,0 };
       private double cdValue[] = { 0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 };
       private double inventoryValue[] = { 0.0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 };
    // initialize instance variable
       private double totalValue = 0;
       private int count;
       public Product( int invNumber[], String albumName[], int invUnits[], double invValue[] )
             cdNums = invNumber;  // store inventory number
             cdNames = albumName;  //store album name
             cdUnits = invUnits;  //store number of units
             cdValue = invValue; // store unit price
       public double calcInventoryValue()

           } while ( invNumber != 0 );  // loop back to inputting employee name and close dowhile
        } // end main
    } // end class ProductTestthe compiler is telling me for ProductTest that it is expecting "]" for the following line: int invNumber[ count ] = input.nextInt();Do I need to store the data in a variable first and then feed it into the array? What do I need to do to complete this code?

    OK, yeah. Change the Product constructor so that it takes scalar values (as opposed to arrays) -- a single int for units in stock, and single String for name, etc.
    Then you can create multiple objects of that class, one for each CD or whatever.
    It makes sense to hardcode values in the ProductTest class, but not really in the Product class. Your ProductTest class is almost there. You know how in the main method you create a single Product object with those arrays? Change it so that you have a loop. Loop through the prices, album names, etc., and create a Product for each set of values. Then put the Product objects in an array, or better yet (and if you've covered it in class) into a Collection like a java.util.HashSet or a java.util.ArrayList.
    You said you wanted to make it take values from user input, rather than hardcoded lists. Once you've made the above change, move on to doing that. You can read user input with a java.util.Scanner. Or you can use a java.io.BufferedReader. Did the prof say to use one particular method or another?

  • Help with importing video; smaller F.O.V. than recorded.

    I am importing clips that I shot on my Canon EOS 60D.
    They are 1080p 24fps .MOV files. I may have trouble explaining my problem, so bear with me.
    The image that is given to me in Premiere is considerably smaller than what I originally recorded on the camera. I am only given a portion of the image. For example, I have a shot where my parents were at the edges of the frame on my LCD. I imported the clip to Premiere and cannot see them at all, I can only see the very center of the shot.
    I'm not sure if I'm shooting with the wrong settings on the camera, selecting the wrong sequence options, or importing the clips incorrectly or something.
    If anyone can help me, it would help a lot! Thank you in advance.

    Your sequence preset doesn't match your footage. Pick a sequence preset that does match from the New Sequence dialog, or drag a clip to the New Item button (looks like a dog-earred sheet of paper) at the bottom of the Project panel. A sequence will be create that matches your footage.
    Also, make sure to set the Program Monitor zoom to "Fit."

  • Need help with developing a small pool game

    Hi,
    I want to develop a small pool game ....Im using the netbeans ide and ....what I have so far is 2 classes ......Pool and GUI
    Basically the main method is in the Pool class.......withing main I created a new GUI object .....which in turn creates a frame.
    I now want to custom code a rectangle and make it a container for the pool table and also colour it......the thing is can I do animations in a frame and by using independant classes rather than using an applet?
    I know this may be innefficient but I want to create a standalone pool game that uses custom objects and classes for the various tasks. I was just wandering if it was possible to do drawings the way i am saying without using an applet? Its just all the tutorials I see .....well all the code seems messy and lumped together in the one place ....and I basically want things such as a independant ball class and perhaps a painter custom interface that colours rectangles.
    Any advice would be appreciated
    David

    Thanks for the advice .....The thing is I understand pretty well what is needed .....and I have programmed small applications that take bookings for a hotel and and a library ....Im am familiar with references, arraylists and the alike and im also reading about the java collections interface ......I have also coded a simplistic program in the past that basically a ball was bouncing of the sides of a container and made a sound when it hit the edge(this used threads i believe). However it has been a while ......and although I am happy with some of the concepts of java........we did not do any java graphics programming at college. In all fairness though I learned the importance of using classes properly and in a way thats why im finding it so difficult to code even basic graphic movement that Im happy with as the tutorials Ive seen have everything lumped in one place(as mentioned) and trying to make them more modular can be difficult. As far as I know from coding some basic applets they are generated on the client side to enable everyone with different platforms to view stuff over the web. I dont want applets as I dont at this time want to distribute any of my meager programs over the web :-)). It is good to know that I can use threads and such independent of the applet class........I know my question may be naive but 100% of the tutorials I saw invoked the applet class in some way and emplied in a way that it was essential.......I thought there would be a way to do it without using applets but was not 100% sure which is why I asked.
    I will just need to try and find one guide now that actually shows me how to do what im asking:-)
    Cheers
    David
    I also have 3 java books.......each of which concentrate on graphics by use of applets ....im going to look them out again as they might contain something useful .....to be honest though they were a bit of a waste of money lol(well 2 of them were)
