I have Microsoft Office 2004 on my MacBook (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).  It is currently up to date with Microsoft updates.  I am running Mac OS 10.6.8.  I just updated my Mac software with "Security Update 2012-001".  I am now unable to print (Epson NX510 printer) from Excel or Word.  When I click on the Print menu item in Excel, there is a flash in the background like it is trying to open the print window, but nothing else.  I am able to print from other programs like TextEdit, Mail or KakeidaGraph.  As far as I know I have the latest Epson print driver.
Also, I am also unable to open an existing Excel or Word file from the open menu - both programs lock up and do not respond.  I have to force quit.  After I restart Excel or Word I can open an existing file by double clicking on the file, but if I again try to open another file from the open menu, Excel or Word lock up.
    Any similar problems?

    Howdy,
Apparently some are reporting that this causes the older PowerPC (PPC) applications that are supported in 10.6 via 'Rosetta' to crash upon attempting to open/save/print using any dialog box, or fail in other similar ways such as simply not printing or quitting, or freezing/hanging/crashing of the application.
I have read of some companies that have indeed submitted proper bug reports to Apple, but that is not a guarantee of a bug-fix being issued.
    You might wish to read:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/index.html#d02feb2012
If you are unsure if you are still using PowerPC apps, if the application is currently running, look under the 'Activity Monitior' (in Applications -> Utilities), or alternatively you could check in the System Profiler, Applications. Check the column "Type".
Here is a fairly simple way you can restore you system and restore you applications functionality again, if you don't have a recent clone or good Time Machine backup that you can restore from. If you do, restore from your backup prior to having installed the Security Update 2012-001.
    Time Machine restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup drive connected, start up your Mac from the Lion recovery partition (Command-R at startup) or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility. Select the backup prior to your issues, and it will be restored back to the state it was in at that time.
If you can't easily restore from a backup, you can instead do the following:
    - You first start by reinstalling your OS X 10.6.x, this will preserve all your user data, your applications, no worries there.
    - Then install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 (links provided below)
    - Make sure you're printers are showing up correctly in your system preferences, if not, re-add the printers
    - Then finally, run the Apple Software Update (by pulling down the Apple Menu), and install any and all remaining updates, except do not then re-install the Security Update 2012-001. It is possible that you may have to reboot after installing some of the updates, and you may even need to run it a 2nd time to make sure that you've got all updates, except NOT the Security Update 2012-001.

    Hey damien555,
Thanks for the question, I understand how frustrating this may be. It sounds like the update process may have been interrupted, and to resolve the issue, we’ll need to restore your device in recovery mode with iTunes:

  • Help with this update statement..

    Hi everyone,
I am trying to update a column in a table .I need to update that column
with a function that takes patient_nbr and type_x column values as a parameter.
That table has almost "300,000" records. It is taking long time to complete
almost 60 min to 90 min.
Is it usual to take that much time to update that many records?
I dont know why it is taking this much time. Please help with this update statement.
    select get_partner_id(SUBSTR(patient_nbr,1,9),type_x) partner_id from test_load;
(it is just taking 20 - 30 sec)
I am sure that it is not the problem with my function.
I tried the following update and merge statements .Please correct me if i am wrong
in the syntax and give me some suggestions how can i make the update statement fast.
    update test_load set partner_id = get_partner_id(SUBSTR(patient_nbr,1,9),type_x);
    merge into test_load a
    using (select patient_nbr,type_x from test_load) b
    on (a.patient_nbr = b.patient_nbr)
    when matched
    then
    update
    set a.partner_id = get_partner_id(SUBSTR(b.patient_nbr,1,9),b.type_x);
there is a index on patient_nbr column
and the statistics are gathered on this table.

  • Help with Secure Erase

I need help with Secure Erase 7-pass in the utility disk. It keeps getting stuck at 25% and a pop up comes out saying not enough memory in the start up disk. Can someone tell me whats going on? After the pop up come on the erase will not proceed.

    Hello,
    moving files from your computer
You can delete files, folders, and other items on your disk that you no longer need.
You may want to store a backup copy or an archive of important items if you are trying to clear space on your hard disk for other things.
Drag the items to the Trash (at the end of the Dock).
Any files or folders you drag to the Trash remain there until you empty the Trash. If you change your mind about something, you can still retrieve it from the Trash if you haven't emptied it yet. Click the Trash icon to open the Trash window, then drag items back to your home folder.
    Choose Finder > Empty Trash.
Even after you empty the Trash, deleted files may still be recovered by using special data-recovery software. To delete files so that they cannot be recovered, choose Finder > Secure Empty Trash. Files deleted in this way are completely overwritten by meaningless data. This may take some time, depending on the size of the file. To prevent the recovery of files you deleted previously, open Disk Utility (in Applications/Utilities), choose Help > Disk Utility Help, and search for help on erasing free disk space.
If an item is locked, you cannot put it in the Trash. Select the item and choose File > Get Info, then deselect the Locked checkbox in the General pane. If you do not own the item, you may need to provide an administrator's name and password to put the item in the Trash.
Press the Option key when you choose Empty Trash to prevent the warning message from appearing. You can also turn off the warning in the Advanced pane of Finder Preferences.
Also... using the Erase Free Disk Space button:
    Erasing free disk space
When you delete files by emptying the Trash, Mac OS X deletes the information used to access the files but doesn't actually delete the files. Although the disk space used by deleted files is marked as free space, deleted files remain intact until new data is written over them. Because of this, deleted files can be recovered.
You can use Disk Utility to erase the "free" space used by deleted files by having zeros written over the space once, seven times, or 35 times. If you have a lot of free space on your disk, overwriting the free space several times can take a long time.
Erasing free disk space does not erase the other files on your disk.
In Disk Utility, select the disk or volume in the list with the free space you want to erase.
Click Erase, then click the Erase Free Space button.
Select an option, then click Erase.
After the process begins, you can interrupt it without harming your data.
You might see a message saying that you are running out of disk space, but you can ignore that warning. When this operation is complete, you will have the same amount of free space as you did when it started.
You can also erase free space when you empty the Trash in the Finder. Choose Finder > Secure Empty Trash.

  • Why ship Google Chrome with security updates to Flash Player

I do not want it, I will not install it, it wastes time downloading. Stop sending it to me.

I remember the European Competition authorities made a judgement against Microsoft for only shipping Internet Explorer with Windows. How can you only ship the Chrome option with Adobe updates, why do you not give users the option to download other browsers?

  • HELP: Latest Security Update hangs during startup

I did two updates, the latest Security Updates for Tiger OSX on my G4, mirror door and also the latest iTunes. After all the downloads it asked me to reboot. Now I get the gray Apple with an endless spinning clock.
I did repair disk permissions via holding down "C" button and also did the fsck or whatever command in terminal mode. Still it hangs.
I'm desperate need of help here. I'm posting this on my iPhone, as my only computer now won't boot.
Can I go back to another version (Tiger only DVD) or how I run off the CD without asking for installation?
To make matters worse, my external HD took a dump and I lost all my iTunes library. All I wanted to do was update my iPhone to 3.0, and now Im just hosed.
Does anyone know if this update does this and what to do? Or am I just unlucky? weeping.....
please post solutions that I can easily access on my small iPhone screen. thanks.
    -G4 single 1.25, Mirrored Door, 768MB RAM, 80Gb HD (8 GB free),

Hi applrob, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Does anyone know if this update does this and what to do? Or am I just unlucky?
99.9% of the time it means there was some pre-existinng corruption. I'll mention all the steps, but I thing the bolded end section is what we'll end up needing.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
*If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...*
    *http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120*
*Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.*

  • HELP, Intel Security Update, no reboot, grey screen of death

so I just downloaded the latest intel security update (i dont even remember the nomencalture) and now my revision A 2007 model macbook pro will not reboot.
It stays on the grey screen with the grey pinwheel.
I reset the PRAM, and nothing.
I took the battery out and held down the power button, and nothing.
so i put in Disc 1 of the instal disc, and started the reinstall process, but stopped because I was not sure if this would format the drive and i would lose everything. So i manually shut down the MBP, and now the I cannot eject the disc.
and it still stalls on the grey screen of death.
    please help !
    sincerely loneshark2000

    did that, too !
was able to get to Disk Utility, Verified the disk, Repaired the disk (no repairs were needed)
went to Start Up Disk, selected the hard drive, restarted, and still she gets stuck on the grey screen.
just got off the phone with mac support. and they recommended target disk mode to grab some of my necessary files. then to conduct a fresh install of the OS X, using archive and install. preserving user settings.
so i guess im off to the store to get a 6 pin to 6 pin.
ugh, what a dilema ! thanks for the reply Sig.

I attempted to install this security update on my iBook G4 but got an error message towards the end of the process stating that it had not fully installed. Since then my dock has disappeared so I can only access applications through Go in Finder, the computer wont shut down or restart, Safari opens with an error message -600, it does not recognise my camera so I cant download photos and About this Mac doesnt work. How can I fix this? Can anyone help? Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions (under less than auspicious circumstances, alas). To save me an incredible amount of typing I will refer you to a previous post on this topic: [http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10206386#10206386]. You should also browse the last few day's topics in this forum for similar issues. As you will see from my post, there's a range of possible cures from simply booting in Safe Mode and rebooting normally, to having to re-install your operating system.

  • Please help!  Security update disaster!

    Hello,
I have read about the security update doing some ill things to peoples macs with their networks and such but mine seems a little stranger.
After updating to the most recent security update, my mac restarted and had a "aqua" screen for almost 30 mins. With nothing else on the screen, i grew inpatient and restarted by pushing the power button for a few seconds. It restarted to an all black screen saying something about 'darwin kernel'. it asked for a login and password, but in an all black screen (think DOS). after trying different incorrect attempts it restarted and now I have to log in as fast as I can because the login screen only stays up for a few seconds before it dissapears. After I log in, the log in screen never goes away it constantly states that it is still logging in. The login screen is on top of everything and won't go away and cannot be covered.
Everytime I restart I am asked to enter a password to get back on my wireless network. Also, my disk utility does not start up. it tries but it unexpectedly quits. I get a crash report that says ( exception: EXCBADACCESS (0X0001) CODES: KERNPROTECTIOINFAILURE (0X0002) AT 0X0000001c
it seems like the rest of my programs work and my info is still here.
    someone please help.

    Hi Joseph
The best thing would be to run Repair Disk from your Install Disk.
The startup drive can only be repaired from another drive. Simply loading the install disk is not sufficient. You have to boot from the install disk.
To do this: Insert the Install Disk 1 into the drive and then select Restart, then continue to hold down the C key until the Apple logo appears.
This will take you to the installation software, but you do not want to install.
Select your language, then go up to the top menu bar to Utilities and navigate to the Disk Utilities application.
Select the start up drive, then follow the instructions in the First Aid pane where you can click on Repair Disk.
If it finds errors, repeat the process until it reports no errors.
After these repairs, quit the application, and restart normally.
Once restarted normally run Repair Permissions. from the Disk Utility application found on your hard drive in Application/Utilities.

  • USB audio gone with security update - why "soundflower"?

Help - since my software update today I can't use my USB headset anymore on my iMac PPC!
What has gone wrong along with the latest security update?
Both in Skype settings and in the main System Preferences panel, I see only 2 "soundflower" options, now USB anymore for In- and output as before. But nothing has changed on my MacBook in spite of a similar security update (i.e. Skype and System Preferences do show the USB headset as usual).
I've never used or seen soundflower before - what or who put that onto my computer?

de-installation of "soundflower" and then of "iShowU" did the trick!

  • Help with replicating/updating vendor master data

    Hi,
Currently, we run the bbp_vendor_sync program to do the replication. It does the job of both bbpgetvd (new vendor creation) and bbpupdvd (update existing vendor).
But the problem is, we have two number ranges for vendors. One is Numeric and other one is Alpha.
    Group -->AB     From 0010000000     to 0699999999
Group -->AZ     From A     to ZZZZZZZZZZ
The vendor synchronization program can consider only one number range at a time i.e.
either Numeric or Alpha. So, we have to switch the active number range
and run the program twice., first for numeric and then for alpha.
In order to avoid this, I'm looking at implementing bbp_transdata_prep which I was told would take care of this issue.
I looked around for documentation/sample code for bbp_transdata badi and couldnt find any on SAP help site or SDN.
Wondering if someone can help with the documentation/sample code and difficuly level of implementing this BADI.
Any help would be highly appreciated and suitable points would be awarded for your help.
Also, if there is another way to solve this issue without implementing transdata badi, pls. let me know.
    TIA,
    Seyed
