Helvetica fonts in Firefox looks ugly

Hello my friends, though i am happy with Arch and my fonts looks great, in firefox 7 those pages that use helvetica looks kind of strange.
This is how it looks in Chromium
This is how it looks in Firefox
I've installed w7-fonts,  and the next code in the .fonts.conf
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>
       <match target="font" >
              <edit mode="assign" name="rgba" >
                     <const>rgb</const>
              </edit>
       </match>
       <match target="font" >
              <edit mode="assign" name="hinting">
                     <bool>true</bool>
              </edit>
       </match>
       <match target="font" >
               <edit mode="assign" name="hintstyle">
               <const>hintslight</const>
               </edit>
       </match>
</fontconfig>

I use in ~/.fonts.conf
<match target="pattern" name="family">
<test name="family" qual="any">
<string>Helvetica</string>
</test>
<edit binding="strong" mode="prepend" name="family">
<string>Arial</string>
</edit>
</match>
$ fc-match helvetica

  • How to make fonts in firefox look prettier? For example like in sleipnir

    Hello,
    I wonder if there is a way to make fonts in firefox look smooth and easy to read?
    I've tried using Sleinpir browser (http://www.fenrir-inc.com/us/sleipnir/) which has aimed to provide smooth and readable text and almost every piece of text looks just better and more pleasant to read.
    I've tried almost every setting both in Options dialog and in about:config (under gfx.font filter).
    Enabling rendering via directwrite helped a lot, but it's still nothing compared to Sleipnir.
    Here are some screenshots:
    Default firefox - http://s5.postimg.org/8ifmq7u7p/ff_default.png
    Firefox with directwrite enabled - http://s5.postimg.org/k15xb3c1h/ff_directdraw.png
    Sleipnir - http://s5.postimg.org/5w049a305/sleipnir_default.png
    So is there a way to make fonts look this pretty in firefox? Is there any iniciative to make FF capable of such thing?
    Thanks a lot
    (EDIT: I've even tried instaling gdi++ https://code.google.com/p/gdipp/ alternative renderer for windows, but it doesn't seem to make any change in firefox)

  • Fonts in Latex look ugly

    Hi,
    i am writing my bachelorthesis in latex. At home i compile it with latex running archlinux and at work i compile my thesis with latex running windows (using MikTex and TeXnicCenter).
    I compile my thesis with pdflatex and the pdf compiled on windows has much nicer fonts then the linux one.
    I have tried different settings but the windows version looks nicer no matter what is do. Has anyone made similar experiences?
    Or am I just using the wrong setting to get nice fonts in linux?
    Here are the packages I use:
    \documentclass[12pt,a4paper]{scrreprt}
    \usepackage[ngerman]{babel}
    \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}
    \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
    \usepackage{lmodern}
    \usepackage{graphicx}

    thanks for all the hints. I checked the log file and latex uses the  <fontname>.pfb fonts.
    I view the pdf with Okular (Kde 4.2.2) and the fonts look different depending on how much I zoom in. In normal view (without zoom) the fonts look really thin (looks like certain characters like "o" have holes in them),  but when I zoom in the fonts start looking better. I switched on subpixel hinting in the KDE systemsettings so I think that should work.
    I will check the pdf generated by linux with the acrobat reader on windows and see if it looks better.

  • After installing Java plugin, Firefox Appearance changed. Now Java completely works, but Firefox looks ugly

    I recently had to install the Java Plugin.... Well, it took me about 20 minutes to get it right... I made some mistakes, like, copying another Lib files, or copying the lib files themselves and not links to them. I should say i am using Slackware 14.0. Well, i managed to install the plugin correctly, but firefox changed from this: http://cdn.portableapps.com/FirefoxPortable.png to this imageshack.us/scaled/landing/837/snapshot1c.png
    I am new to Linux, kind of... And i am new to Firefox too... I searched online but i couldnt find nobody with the same problem... I checked to see if it was a Theme, but i only have the Default 15.0.1

    You get the orange Firefox menu button if the menu bar is hidden (View > Toolbars).<br />
    On Linux the (gray) Firefox menu button will appear on the Tab bar and not instead of the title bar as on the Windows screenshot.

  • Since this morning all text in firefox look slightly different - I think it still uses the same font, but renders it differently.

    Since this morning all text in firefox looks slightly different - I think it still uses the same font, but renders it differently!? I would like to have it changed back to what it was. Any help is welcome.
    Some facts:
    - Happens only in Firefox (IE & Chrome still look the same)
    - Already did a reset to defaults
    I'm using the latest version of Firefox
    Screenshot can be found here: [http://www.ka-pow.net/media/images/firefoxissue.jpg link text]

    Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems: <b>View/Beeld > Zoom > Reset</b> (Ctrl+0 (zero); Cmd+0 on Mac)
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Zoom_text_of_web_pages
    Press F10 or tap the Alt key to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily if the Menu Bar is hidden.
    Use "Firefox > Options" instead of "Tools/Extra > Options" if the menu bar is hidden.

  • Regular Helvetica font becomes compressed in some Leopard applications

    Since installing Leopard, I've noticed that several instances of the Helvetica font become horizontally compressed. It's merely an annoyance when viewed online, but when trying to enter text into a field, such as in Yahoo! Messenger v.3.0b2, it's impossible to know where to place the insertion point, since it doesn't correspond to the actual character outlines.
    One place it's 100% reproducible is when using Safari 3 to view the date and headlines on MacFixIt:
    http://www.macfixit.com/
    It's clearly a bug, because it looks as intended in every other browser, including Firefox for Mac OS X.
    Does anyone have a fix?

    Tom Gewecke wrote:
    Actually I meant on your machine already.
    I did have several duplicates -- mostly older versions of the Microsoft-installed fonts that Apple now seems to include with the OS. I got rid of the older verisons that had been in my user fonts folder, thinking that maybe Arial was the culprit. No dice: even after a restart, with no dupes in Font Book, the problem is as before.
    For comparison, here are how I see MacFixIt's homepage in Safari 3:
    http://ewestby.com/safari-narrow-fonts.gif
    and in Firefox:
    http://ewestby.com/firefox-normal-fonts.gif
    This is after checking for and removing duplicate fonts. And again, I'm not merely quibbling: I can live with the odd display. The real problem is that in several apps, text entry gets messed up because the insertion point doesn't appear where it's supposed to, since the OS is somehow not keeping track of the proper character widths.

    Now, why on Earth would I do that? Think I'm creating this file at random?? I'm continually testing and refining the rules. The purpose of the rules is to compensate for fontconconfig's inability to do such tweaking automatically. The end result is that fonts look better - I'm surprised that I need to point this out, it should be blatantly obvious.
    hintslight should be used until the mid or up to the upper 100dpi range
    That's meaningless by itself, you must include pixelsize in the equation. The majority of Microsoft's fonts, as well as various other fonts, actually look better when small using hintfull.
    is a hack... Simplify, simplify, simplify.
    Well, yeah, of course, it would be great if fontconfig did all the tweaking for us - but it doesn't. Fonts vary greatly, so fontconfig needs to be told the best ways to render various fonts, at various sizes/weights. You don't seem to understand this point, judging by this and your other posts regarding fonts - same as skottish, IIRC. Don't you guys have eyes?
    Anyway, here's my current ~/.fonts.conf, which continues to be improved.

  • How to make the fonts in Firefox sharper so there more like the fonts in Google Chrome?

    I'm currently in the process of moving from Google Chrome to Firefox, and I noticed that the fonts in Firefox are allot more smoother then what they are in Google Chrome, is there anyway to make the Firefox fonts look as sharp as what the fonts are in Google Chrome?

    This article has some suggestions for fixing bad-looking fonts: '''[[Fonts look blurry]]'''
    There are also some improvements coming in Firefox 7, which is currently available for testing on the [http://www.firefox.com/channel Aurora channel]. (It will be released to the beta channel in a few days, and will become the new stable release six weeks from now.)
    If you're interested in the technical details, [https://blog.mozilla.com/nattokirai/2011/08/11/directwrite-text-rendering-in-firefox-6/ this article] has some in-depth information and some more preferences you can tweak.

  • How can I change the proportional font in Firefox?

    I prefer helvetica font, so I have changed the fonts for webpages in Firefox settings to it (changed all fonts to helvetica, unchecked "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"). However, some webpages still display in what I presume is the seriff font under proportional font. It would be nice to get all webpages to display in helvetica font but it seems that firefox only allows seriff or sans seriff for the proportional font.
    How can I make all the webpages display with the same font: helvetica?
    Please do not tell me how to change the other fonts; once again, I have done that.
    I only want to know if and how the PROPORTIONAL FONT can be changed or disabled, so that all webpages display in helvetica.

    I found it. In fact, the proportional ask you if you prefer serif or sans-serif. Then, under this, you can choose what serif is, and what sans-serif is.
    By example, I wanted my proportional font to be the Mona font. So I put sans-serif for proportional, and then I changed sans-serif for Mona.

  • Website fonts does not look correct.

    When I open some sites it does not show the font clearly and very difficult to read. IE or chrome usage looks good which I am doing now. Want to use Firefox again.
    Firefox version: 28.0
    OS: Windows 7.
    Example site: http://www.ndtv.com/news/
    Troubleshooting.
    Without addon: Same issue
    Safe mode: Same Issue
    New profile for firefox: same issue.
    Even for this site the font are not looking correct.

    Could you check Windows 7's ClearType settings? Unlike IE, Firefox relies on your Windows 7 settings for anti-aliasing.
    Did the font quality change suddenly and, if so, can you associate it with any Firefox or Windows updates? Or graphics card driver updates?
    This site uses a font named Open Sans which is downloaded. If Firefox isn't able to download the font, it will substitute something it believes is similar. Perhaps you are getting a terrible substitution??

    Another possibility is that you have the correct theme but don't have the associated theme engine installed.  Poke around the themes a bit:
    For a GTK2 theme: in the "theme/gtk-2.0/gtkrc" file look for the line that says "engine" and a name.  Make sure you have that name installed.
    For a GTK3 theme: in the "theme/gtk-3.0/gtk.css" file also look for "engine" and the name.  Also make sure that engine is installed.
    Themes are almost always in "/usr/share/themes/theme_name"
    The files you look for to see which engine a theme uses may be in different files than the ones specified above, poke around in the files.  The file that specifies the engine will be a text file so you can look at them using "less" or an alternative.

  • [SOLVED] Web browser won't use (or can't find) Helvetica font

    I'm currently using Gnome 3.6.2, Firefox 17.0.1, and Chromium 23.0.1271.97.
    Many sites that I visit use a Helvetica font variant: Helvetica, Helvetica Neue, or Helvetica World.
    However, it seems as though the actual names of these fonts vary depending on where they were purchased.
    For example, you will find the following names scattered across the internet:
    - Helvetica Std
    - Helvetica LT
    - Helvetica LT Std
    - Helvetica LT Com
    and so forth...  and this includes the variants as well.
    Nowhere, including the Adobe website, have I found just "Helvetica" alone.
    However, I'm not a font expert and this may not matter.
    The family "Helvetica" may be specified within the font itself.
    Yet, this does not seem to be the case because although I have Helvetica LT Std installed, no browser will render it for just "Helvetica".
    I tried creating the following font alias:
    <alias>
    <family>Helvetica</family>
    <prefer><family>Helvetica LT Std</family></prefer>
    <default><family>fixed</family></default>
    </alias>
    But that does not work.
    Where am I going wrong?
    I'd also like to note that Firebug on Firefox is the only web developer tool that will show which font is actually being rendered on the page, as opposed to just listing the css rule.

    Excuse me, do you mean you have not any Helvetica typeface installed yet? What is the output of
    fc-list | grep Helvetica
    in the first place?
    No, that's not at all what I mean.  If you read the first post, then you'd realize that I'm struggling with getting Firefox to use something like 'Helvetica LT Std' in place of 'Helvetica' or 'Helvetica Neue LT Com' in place of 'Helvetica Neue'.  I'm now resorting to simply copying over 'Helvetica.ttf' under the assumption that it will provide simply 'Helvetica' without the 'LT whatever...' .
