Hiding a program with no dock icon

I am looking for a way to hide an application which is running without a dock icon.
I have tried using spirited away but as soon as I hide the dock icon(space suit is the app in question)spirited away can no longer find the application.
The reason for my enquiry is that space suit creates a window in expose called "SpaceSuitWin" which is taking up unnecessary space and at times making other window preview so small that they are indecipherable.
Any feedback would be awesome, not sure if this is even possible but any work arounds or alternatives are welcome. Also a fairly novice user so any tech. solutions may need to be well explained.

Find the info.plist file in the Application, and edit it.
Put this:
<key>LSUIElement</key>
<string>1</string>
just above the penultimate </dict> entry.
You might have to move the application to update the registry. Then move it back. Relaunch.
You need to be aware that this will also eliminate the menu bar, which might be problematic depending upon the application.

Problem with the Dock icons in OSX 10.5.3

Not sure if this is down to the recent OSX update but ever since I applied the update my dock icons, or more specifically the text above them looks like this:

You'll notice the background where the text is is not graduated as it should be on either side.
Any ideas how to fix this?

That looks like the problem I occasionally have (since the background of the dock also seems missing) Does a fan-view of a doc-stack draw no icons?
If it is the same problem I don't think it is related to the update (I had it on all point versions), and logging out and back in might fix it.

Since installing 10.6.4 problem with transparent Dock icons

Hi there;
I installed the Mac OS X 10.6.4 update via Software Update on three Macs. So far, so good on two of them. On my MacBook Pro, 10.6.4 is running fine except for a small but annoying problem. Some of the icons in the Dock are transparent now. The icons for Mail and Safari are transparent. If I drag those icons off the Dock and replace them with new icons, the new icons remain solid for a few minutes, then go transparent again.
Has anyone else noticed that problem and if so, have you found a way to fix it?

Have you tried LaunchServices?
Have you tried in Safe Mode?
Copy & paste this at the command line to rebuild LaunchServices:

Adding dock icon _CFURLAliasData

Hello all,
    We are doing a deployment with a hybrid of two applications. One is Mac native and the other is a Windows program running inside of VMware Fusion 4 in unity mode.
   We can make a dock icon for the Mac application, no sweat... but what we are still trying to do is add a dock icon for the windows application.
Background:
VMware Fusion creates app-bundles for all Windows applications that the VMware tools inside of Windows detects.   It then creates app bundles inside the ".vmwarevm" package directory that has a mac native program called "vmware-docker".   The Info.plist file in the app bundle contains the path to the Windows executable application as seen inside the VM and the ".vmwarevm" package's full system path. This vmware-docker app knows if the app is running inside windows and makes the icon appear in the dock when unity mode is enabled. It also allows you to launch the windows program from that dock icon and resume/restart the Windows vm if need be.
Problem:
Now, I can manually drag that icon to the dock and it works perfectly.
If however, I move the location of that vmware-docker app bundle because of difference on a different machine it understandably breaks. Normally MacOS can figure this out and fix it, but not in this case.
So if I use a plist editor and fix the path in the _CFURLString variable to point to the correct location and killall the dock, the icon still does not work.
If I delete the persistent-apps entry for it and generate it from scratch with the _CFURLString to the proper path and _CFURLStringType = 0, I end up with a dock ? icon.   It seems that it only works if I drag it there.
This simply can't be. I must be missing somthing...
When I do drag the icon to the dock, I do notice that my persistent-apps data shows this element with a _CFURLStringType of 15 and a _CFURLAliasData attribute. My thought is that it may have to do with _CFURLAliasData which I can't figure out the format of to reproduce it.   The hex values do seem to contain the path, but there is other stuff inside in a binary format which I have not been able to make sense of.
Anyone have any ideas where I can look next??

Even though the '_CFURLString' has the format 'file://localhost/Applications/Calculator.app/', you need provide '/Applications/Calculator.app/'. Then, the OS X will fill up the corresponding '_CFURLAliasData' for you. I tested on 10.8.5 & 10.10, both works fine.

Dock Icons will not stay in their place (CPU?)

I have been having an issue with random dock icons not staying in their place. I move an icon to a place that makes it arranged correctly in terms of grouping or importance and it "slides" back to it's original place almost immediately. Or I will move one and start arranging and all of a sudden one will slide to the right side or something.
I finally got a chance to troubleshoot this and did a google search.
I have for a very long time had DOCK SYNC TURNED OFF.
Now I have gotten into the MBP and LOGGED OUT of my MobileMe account and it STILL does this. It has been happening since I bought the computer new. I have other issues related to battery life and beachballs and hot computer or hot power charger of loud fan so I put another 4 GIGS in the machine recently so that it now has 8.
Mac phone support says they want to walk me through checking the CPU but I have done this routine like three times on this computer where I set up a User Account and I have done a FRESH INSTALL twice since I bought it. Last week I finally caught a break in the schedule to bring it in and they say the Hardware is fine.
I mean, it is odd but I don't consider this machine to be what I would consider a "pro" line but at the same time I see that this dock thing is happening on my MacPro (albeit while I am still logged into my MobileMe account).
Thoughts or suggestions? I don't want to take the time to bring it in if I don't have to.

yup. bizarre. logged out of MobileMe and I try to move the Keychain Icon from the third on the left to the last on the right and -whoooo-oop - it slides back to the left. no fun. like having a gremlin moving books around in my library or something...

What is it that makes the Downloads dock icon bounce?

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it a script?
And more importantly: can I copy the behavior with other dock icons?

I had no other way to get in touch other than post on this thread. I would like to discuss with you an archived thread you started concerning the Pirelli router, WDS, and Airport Express.
I am in Athens as well and have a similar issue. So far, I am concluding that the Pirelli WDS protocol is different than the Apple. I cannot seem to solve the problem of extending the network using an Airport as a remote access point. Can you advise?

My ipod comes up with the itunes icon with it wanting to be attached to usb but I do that and my computer no longer reconises it nor does the charger or dock.

Whats with the itunes icon and the usb wanting to be connected pictures??? My ipod won't charge or be recongnised by computer, charger or docking station. Help Please.

10.6.8 Unable to click in text boxes or on utility menu at top of screen, Dock icons lead to containing folders instead of programs

As stated in my subject, periodically I become unable to click in text boxes (in my browser, addresses/search) and am also unable to click on the various icons in the utility bar at the top of the screen such as bluetooth and volume control etc. Also, when this occurs if I click on Applications or one of my Dock icons it leads to the containing folder as a destination instead of the program itself. It resolves itself after awhile, but I can fix it immediately by unplugging my mouse and plugging it back in. At that point, everything works fine as if nothing ever happened. What is strange to me is that it fazes in and out, while being able to return to being fully operational.

Have you tried adding the following css selector to your css file.

Updated apps break links with dock icons (Mac OS)

When apps are updated via the CC desktop app, they sometimes (not always) come down with a new name which causes the link in the dock to break.
This would be a nuisance with one or two apps, but when a CC user has (like I do) a dozen icons in their dock it means that every major update requires several broken dock icons to be replaced. And if (like me) the user has more than one login on their machine (for separate personal and business workspaces) then the nuisance is doubled.
For example, I have just downloaded "Adobe Edge Animate CC 2014.1", which has removed the earlier version leaving an orphaned dock icon ("Adobe Edge Animate CC 2014"), for the sake of adding ".1" to the file name.
As a general principle, version numbers do not belong in an application name; there is a perfectly good field in the file info window for version number which is where practically every other vendor puts theirs.
This comes on top of the muddle of versions which has meant there are three "current" versions of some apps, for instance Photoshop (CS6, CC and CC 2014).
The other problem with your system is that in a few short months "CC 2014" apps will be outdated, if not in practise, certainly in name.
Some creative brains need to be exercised on this, don’t leave it to the nerds.

If it happens in a new user you may be able to repair this with the 10.5.4 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

Icon bounce notification problem with hidden dock

Hi: I think this has been reported on macosxhints for the mail app, but I'm seeing it in other applications too. Specifically, I have Adium setup to notify me via a bouncing dock icon on new messages. I also have a hidden dock.
I've noticed that on new messages, initially the dock icon bounce will be visible. But if I mouse over the dock area to unhide + hide the dock, the bouncing will no longer be visible (it is still bouncing, and I can unhide the dock to confirm - just not visible when the dock is hidden anymore). If I click on the dock icon to check my message, any subsequent messages from Adium result in the dock icon bounce not being visible with the dock hidden. Once again, it is bouncing, just not visible.
As described in http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090330170041769, there are certain ways to avoid this, or even to recover from this, but I end up missing my IMs pretty often.

Mail's dock icon is "badged" with 300 "unread" messages?

Hello, I'm having an issue in Apple Mail wherein every time I open the app, it badges the dock icon with 300 unread messages.... but the app itself (i.e. Main window) shows NO new messages. Anyone have any clue what's going on?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
PS - For my system specs, see my sig, as they're always kept up-to-date.

Let me clarify about the mostly part.
I followed the directions you gave and lo and behold my "dock count" was back to normal. The only problem was, all of my RSS articles are showing a header that looks like an email, instead of an RSS message. (Y'know with the Blue...)
I've written down all of the RSS feeds I'm subscribed to in TextEdit. I'll go to each site and add them again manually and get back with you if that works.

Cannot drag files to mail dock icon to compose new message with attachment

Hello,
I can no longer drag images or files to the dock icon to open a compose message window with the attachment. I drag the file and nothing happens.
I first noticed using skitch. Then I tried both a jpg and word .docx from finder and neither worked. I then tried dragging to other applications like photoshop and that worked fine. So it seems to be isolated to mail.app
I tried repairing my permissions and that didn't fix the problem.
I am using the latest version of Snow Leopard, 10.6.2

Alright well the problem is back and I did some further testing.
It works when mail.app is not already open, I can drag images or any type of file to mail, mail will open and create a new message with the attachment.
IF mail is already open, the only thing I've been able to drag are links from safari, images or files no longer work.
