Hierarchical Queries / Rowsets via JDBC?

I have an application that requires data from an SQL database to be displayed in a hierarchical directed graph (i.e. a JTree). Is it possible to construct Hierarchical Queries that return Hierarchical Rowsets in servlets via JDBC? This would be akin to using a Microsoft ADODB Hierarchical Recordset object, but I need a Java solution that's portable and isn't dependent on proprietary extensions in a server (i.e. iPlanet, etc.).
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Is it possible to construct Hierarchical Queries that
return Hierarchical Rowsetsin servlets via JDBC?No. JDBC only speaks in flat rows and columns.
What type of hierarchical rowset are you referring to? Is it multidimensional data? For example MSSqlServer OLAP with row, column and measure dimensions? Or, is it simply grouped data for which you are both summarizing and displaying detail?

  • Accessing and retreiving ResultSets through CORBA via JDBC

    Hey,
    Im in the middle of doing a project and I was originally planning to connect to the database through JDBC over TCP/IP only. Everything worked fine. Now Ive been told that I have to use CORBA to relay the result sets over from the remote database. ie An applet requests information, queries the CORBA server, the CORBA server via JDBC then queries the database and gets the result set. The result set is sent back via CORBA to the client applet, where the data is then manipulated.
    What I want to know is it actually possible to do this? I only know a small amount of CORBA and Ive been crawling the web for even a small example of it. Could anyone help me out. Ive been looking for the past week and you guys are my last hope.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    You won't be able to send actual instances of the Java class ResultSet via CORBA. All interfaces and data structures you use must be defined in CORBA IDL. You should be able to find a lot of tutorials about general CORBA, including the ones at the bottom of
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/guide/idl/index.html
    You should define an interface in CORBA IDL for your server that the client applet will call. Probably you'll have a method which takes the query parameters and returns some sort of data structure that you also define in IDL.
    The only problem I really see is whether or not the JVM your browser uses does CORBA very well.

  • Lost index stats in Ora 8.1.6 Tables when selecting via jdbc

    Hi,
    i'm using JBuilder8 and Kylix2 on a Linux machine with Oracle oci drivers of client 8.1.7.
    The connect through JB8 jdbc via DBPilot is succesful and shows the tables of the db.
    After executing a select on any table the index stats of this table are lost.
    Kylix works fine without this failure.
    Thanks for any comments to this problem
    Jens

    Well, it's not the PL/SQL code that is causing a problem. Everything worked fine for many months. Then one day (without any changes in the environment or code) the update of a table from a java application (via JDBC) fails. The same update done directly on the DB with SQL Plus still succeeds!
    This led us to think that something is wrong with the JDBC connection (which was up for several months). Maybe a memory corruption?
    Anyone that experienced similar problems with JDBC?

  • Help needed in understanding the concept of hierarchical queries

    I really need help in this matter. I have a flafile containing about 4000 rows. It is from my supplier, it's structure is as follows:
    create table Flatfile
    (Pgroup varchar2(30),
    Pclass varchar2(30),
    Manufacturer varchar2(30),
    Article varchar2(30),
    Price Number(6,2));
    Insert into Flatfile Values
    ('Application Software','Database Software','Oracle','Oracle 10G',115);
    Insert into Flatfile Values
    ('Application Software','Database Software','Microsoft','MS SQL Server 2000',200);
    Insert into Flatfile Values
    ('Application Software','Spreadsheet Software','Microsoft','Excel',100);
    Insert into Flatfile Values
    ('Monitor','15"','Acer','Acer 15"" TFT superscreen',199);
    Insert into Flatfile Values
    ('Monitor','15"','Sony','Sony R1500 flat',225);
    Insert into Flatfile Values
    ('Monitor','17"','Philips','Philips Flatscreen',250);
    Insert into Flatfile Values
    ('Monitor','19"','Viewsonic','Viewsonic PLasma Monitor',275);
    Insert into Flatfile Values
    ('Processor','AMD','AMD','FX-55',600);
    Insert into Flatfile Values
    ('Processor','Intel','Intel','P4 3 GHZ',399);
    My goal is to make a hierarchical query with the start with and connect by clauses. From what I have read is that I need to normalize the data of the flatfile.
    How do I achieve a table which I can query so that the query will represent the hierarchy that exists. Namely
    Pgroup
    ++Pclasse
    Application Software
    ++Database Software
    ++Spreadsheet Software
    So a 2-level hierarchy. I'd like to understand this simple concept first. I built on the knowledge that I gain. So the questions are:
    1.What do I need to do to make the table so that I can use a hierarchical query on it?
    2. How should the query syntax be?
    3. Is it also possible to get the data in the hierarchical query sorted asec?
    I would only like to use the simple structures of the start with and connect by clauses first. I've read there are some new additions to 10G. The problem with the examples used by the tutorials is that the tables are already made so that they are suitable for hierarchical queries. I hope to understand it by this example. And take it a step further.
    Sincerely,
    Pete

    Primarily hierarchy query serves to process tree-like structures which RDBMS simulates using through parent-child relation, often in a single table (see famoust
    EMP table where employee can have the manager who is an employee at the same time).
    In your case it could look like:
    SQL> select pgroup, pclass from flatfile;
    PGROUP                         PCLASS
    Application Software           Database Software
    Application Software           Database Software
    Application Software           Spreadsheet Software

      2  start with pgroup is null
      3  connect by prior pclass = pgroup

    Processor
      AMD                            AMD
      Intel                          Intel
    12 rows selected.The hierarchy syntax is described completely in the documentation including
    LEVEL and PRIOR keywords.
    As for the ordering question you can use siblings ordering:
    SQL> select decode(level,1,pclass,'  ' || pclass), Manufacturer from flatfile
      2  start with pgroup is null
      3  connect by prior pclass = pgroup
      4  order siblings by 1 desc
      5  /
    DECODE(LEVEL,1,PCLASS,''||PCLASS MANUFACTURER

  • Connecting to IDMS database via JDBC

    Has anyone successfully set up JDBC connectivity to generate reports using data in an IDMS mainframe database containing multiple schemas, where several schemas may contain tables with the same name?
    We have no issues when using ODBC to connect to the various schemas in this IDMS databases, but we need to convert the connectivity for existing reports to JDBC.
    When I open the JDBC connection, I see the expected hierarchy of schemas and tables in the Database Expert window.  If I try to select a table I get the following error message if a table of that same name exists in other schemas:
    Failed to retrieve data from the database.
    Details:  SQL exception: [SQL State:]  42000  [Error message:]  DB002046 T11094 C-4M347: Duplicate table ids for ASISCHEM.SR-ACT and CORPCHEM.SR-ACT in area CORPDB.ACTIVITY-AREA [Database Vendor Code: -4]
    So although we can connect to the database via JDBC, we can't use the connectivity because Crystal  does not appear to correctly resolve that I'm selecting the table from within a specific schema.
    Can anyone advise on how to make sure the table name selection is qualified by the correct schema name?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
    Try running the query outside of CR to verify the JDBC driver is passing the fully qualified name also.
    Then look in the Designer and Show SQL to verify it's there as well as Set Table Location. You may be able to fully qualify it in that UI.
    Thank you
    Don

  • Error trying to connect via jdbc

    I'm trying to connect via jdbc driver from a java application to a remote db. The code is quite simple
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());

    Please be aware of the following facts:
    1) sqlplus from the same machine has no problem connecting to the db
    2) there is no firewall or router between the client and the server
    3) As host name I've tried the fqdn (resolved by the DNS), a name I've set up in /etc/hosts, the mere IP address
    4) Checking with tcpdump, I've verified that NO network packet actually leaves the client, so the problem completely lies there.
    Has anyone some good idea why this happens?

    Make sure you are providing correct hostname and listener port number

  • OS authentication in Oracle 10g via jdbc:oracle:oci

    I'm very much a newbie to Java / JDBC and I am trying, but failing, to connect with the database using OS authentication via jdbc, and hoping someone may help.
    My questions are:
    1. Is OS authentication supported for jdbc:oracle:oci with Oracle 10g ? I couldn't find a general statement of whether it works or not.
    (NB.The only information I managed to find, on another forum, is that it should be supported but there is a bug and so it does not work, but the author did not post all of his/her platform details, so the bug may only affect his/her situation. )
    2. If it is supported and works, could some one suggest what is wrong with my syntax . I could not find an example in any Oracle 10g/JDBC documentation.
    The details are as follows: -
    Database : - Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition 10.2.0.2.0 running on Solaris.
    Development platform : - NetBeans 6.1, JDK 1.6.
    Runtime environment: - JRE1.6 on Windows XP professional.
    OPS$ authentication : - the OPS$ accounts have been set-up and we use these successfully for PL/SQL and SQL Plus access.
    JDBC : - I can connect to the database with both jdbc:oracle:thin ( linking in ojdbc14.jar) and jdbc:oracle:oci by using username and password, so I know my JDBC library linkage is OK, eg. this works fine :
    final String url = new String("jdbc:oracle:oci:" + uname + "/" + pword + "@" + environment);
    where environment is the SID
    I have trawled the Oracle documentation which tells me that OS authentication is not supported for Oracle 10g for the jdbc:oracle:thin driver, so I have tried to connect with jdbc:oracle:oci driver using the following code :
    final String url = new String("jdbc:oracle:oci:/@" + environment);
    final Driver driver = new oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver();
    DriverManager.registerDriver(driver);
    final Properties props = new Properties();
    conn = DriverManager.getConnection(url);
    but this gives the following error :
    java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
    Other info: - The tnsnames.ora file contains nothing but there are entries in the ldap.ora and sqlnet.ora files.
    My questions are:
    1. Is OS authentication supported for jdbc:oracle:oci with Oracle 10g ? I couldn't find a general statement of whether it works or not.

    If you specify the SID/service_name in the url, you are attempting to connect via SQL*NET and REMOTE_OS_AUTHENT must be set to true in the database. If you are connecting from the same host the database runs on, then just leave the SID off and make sure the ORACLE_SID environment variable is set.
    You can reproduce the same error you get in java with
    sqlplus /@SID

  • Alternative for Hierarchical Queries

    Hi all,
    Is there any other way to implement the Hierachical Query in Oracle. Let us assume the following example of the Scott.emp Table. The output of the table must be in a Hierarchical manner as follows :
    ORG_CHART EMPNO MGR JOB
    KING 7839 PRESIDENT
    JONES 7566 7839 MANAGER
    SCOTT 7788 7566 ANALYST
    ADAMS 7876 7788 CLERK
    FORD 7902 7566 ANALYST
    SMITH 7369 7902 CLERK
    BLAKE 7698 7839 MANAGER
    ALLEN 7499 7698 SALESMAN
    WARD 7521 7698 SALESMAN
    MARTIN 7654 7698 SALESMAN
    TURNER 7844 7698 SALESMAN
    JAMES 7900 7698 CLERK
    CLARK 7782 7839 MANAGER
    MILLER 7934 7782 CLERK
    The above structure can be achieved using the following implementation by using the clauses namely CONNECT BY PRIOR, LEVEL and START WITH :
    SELECT LPAD(' ',2*(LEVEL-1)) || ename org_chart,
    empno, mgr, job
    FROM emp
    START WITH job = 'PRESIDENT'
    CONNECT BY PRIOR empno = mgr;
    The above query works fine without any issues.
    But is there any other way to implement the above logic without using the above hierarchical query clauses.
    Please help me on the above.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Raj

    Thanks.
    Why I require this implementation is we have an software which runs both on Oracle and SQL Server, we accomplish the same very easily in Oracle by using the Hierarchical Queries already available in Oracle. But there is no such predefined keywords to implement in SQL server. That is the purpose of the above.
    When we can achieve the same in a alternative way in Oracle, the same I feel can be implemented in SQL server.
    Raj
    Not without dropping into PLSQL, but this is not easy, and why bother, if your query works OK?

  • Execute anonymous PL/SQL block via JDBC - OUT parameter not available

    I have a simple proc on the database:
    CREATE PROCEDURE TEST(X OUT BINARY_INTEGER, Y IN VARCHAR) AS

                    " :1 := X_TARGET;\n" +
                    "END;"
                stproc_stmt.registerOutParameter(1, Types.NUMERIC);
                stproc_stmt.setString(2, "test");
                stproc_stmt.executeUpdate();
                Object o = stproc_stmt.getObject(1);
            catch (Exception e) {
                e.printStackTrace();
            } No exceptions are thrown, but the Object o does not get the value '33' - it is NULL.
    Any ideas?
    thanks in advance,
    Mike Norman

    I think the issue may be in how JDBC parameter binding is being managed throughout the block's lifecycle.
    The slightly-different TEST2 works:
    CREATE PROCEDURE TEST2(Y IN VARCHAR, X OUT BINARY_INTEGER) AS
    BEGIN
      X := 33;
    END;
    try {
        Connection connection =
          DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:ORCL",
         "scott", "tiger");
        CallableStatement stproc_stmt = connection.prepareCall(
         "DECLARE\n" +
         " Y_TARGET VARCHAR(20) := :1;\n" +
         " X_TARGET BINARY_INTEGER;\n" +
         "BEGIN\n" +
         " TEST2(Y=>Y_TARGET, X=>X_TARGET);\n" +
         " :2 := X_TARGET;\n" +
         "END;"
        stproc_stmt.setString(1, "test");
        stproc_stmt.registerOutParameter(2, Types.NUMERIC);
        stproc_stmt.executeUpdate();
        Object o = stproc_stmt.getObject(1);
    catch (Exception e) {
        e.printStackTrace();
    }The order of the bind indices ':1' and ':2' are reversed in the above anonymous block - we are returning via ':2'.
    I am wondering if 'under the covers' there isn't perhaps a cursor issue. When the original block is parsed and the first bind index is found to be position 2, somehow we can't go back to position 1 - a forwards-only cursor?

  • 10G Forms connect to MS Access via JDBC

    A new project requires a 10G Form to connect to MS Access database. I understand 10G no longer connects to Access using ODBC. Will JDBC work? If JDBC can be used does anyone have a "How To" document or examples on how to connect orms 10G to MS Access via JDBC
    Thanks

    I dont think it will work. In 10g forms is going to implement transparent gateways.
    Is there a possibility of getting the data from MS access directly to Oracle database and then connect to Oracle DB from forms ?

    I only found the:

    Yes, files opened from SharePoint use a different ASFileSys and you can get info about the location from the ASPathname.
    However, no SP-specific information (like metadata) is provided.  You would need to use the SP-APIs yourself to do that.

  • Accessing Data from HTML DB via JDBC

    Hello, I am from Germany so please excuse my following mistakes in english.
    I built a web-application based on JSP, which connects to a local oracle-database 10g. web-server is tomcat. I use the JDBC-Driver from Oracle.
    Now I want to connect not to my local db but to a Oracle HTML DB, which already exists in the domain of my company. I know the workspace, the application-name and everything, which is accessible for an HTML DB admin. but no clue, what's important for connecting the database via JDBC.
    The hostname I got from the URL of HTML DB as well as the port. The main problem is to get the right database-name. I tried the workspace-name -> nothing, tried the application-name -> nothing. Honestly I tried everything, what I found.
    So my questions :
    -> Is there a chance to access the data created and used in the workspaces of the HTML-DB via JDBC (Java Database Connectivity)?
    -> How do I name the Workspace from outside?
    -> Are the login-accounts still applicable when connecting from outside via JDBC?
    I'm looking forward to get your ideas and help
    So far
    Kay

    Your English is very good. The hostname on the URL of HTML DB may not be the host on which the database rests. That is the host of the HTTP server. That server may or may not be the database server.
    Now your questions:
    -> Is there a chance to access the data created and used in the workspaces of the HTML-DB via JDBC (Java Database Connectivity)? What do you mean by "Data created and used in the workspace"? Do you mean the HTML DB repository which contains the application, page, and item definitions? (This is accessible via the schema that HTML DB was installed in.) If you mean the data a user creates when using an HTML DB application, then it is accessible through the application's parsing schema.
    -> How do I name the Workspace from outside? Outside the realm of HTML DB the workspace is not needed.
    -> Are the login-accounts still applicable when connecting from outside via JDBC? When you say "login-accounts" doe the mean the username/password users used to run the HTML DB application? These may or may not be database schemas. They may be HTML DB usernames or network usernames or LDAP usernames.
    I highly recommend you contact the DBA of the database you are trying to connect to and explain what you are doing. You should also contact the developer of the HTML DB application. They should be able to provide you with all the information you need.
