High (and increasing) memory usage: Windows Driver Foundation

Hello! I updated my Z50-70 to Windows 10 a few days ago, using the clean install method. Everything works great but I noticed one problem. There is one process "Windows Driver Foundation - user-mode driver framework" which consumes great amounts of RAM. But the worrying thing is that when I start the computer that process doesn't use too much memory, but it keeps increasing, slowly but surely, and it doesn't seem to stop. I have done some research and apparently it could be caused by some faulty driver. Does anybody have the same problem? Is it any way to identify what is causing this problem? Thanks.

    Hi Renji,
This is a known defect CSCtn87921 and its caused by a memory leak in BIPPA service
-Please follow the workaround of restarting the BIPPA service from serviceability section on both servers if present
    -Check if the alert disappears
-It should have been fixed in SU4 but apparently not

  • High Page Pool Memory Usage on a Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster

    Hi,
may someone has a similar Problem or can give me a helping Hand.
    I'm having a 9Node Cluster ( Windows 2012 R2 , fully Patched from RTM Version on )
The Cluster is connected to a SAN which is an Equallogic ( Firmware 6.11).  HitKit Driver 4.7.1
The System running clean and without any Event Logs until the Page Pool Usage of the Nodes turn over 15 GB of Paged pool Memory.
I monitore that via a Performance Counter ( \Memory\Pool Paged Bytes)
otherwise I have no indication by for example the Process View, the Calculated Sum on the Overview ( TaskManager / Memory ) but shows on the contraditory the 15GB an Memory Usage.
I downloaded the RAMMap Tool from Sysinternals but that doesnt show me any possible Information for the information , acutally the Information differs from RAMMap to the Performance Counter ( RAMMap = 251MB, Performance Counter = 15GB )
Just to make that point clear , there is No Information beside the Sum of Page File on the System Page and the PerfCounter that so much Page Pool Memory is used by any Process . Therefor it is hidden which process "needs" it.
I tried many thinks ,  like search for a Memory Hole in the Drivers , Hyper-V Stack , Equallogic and hoped for resolution with any new Patch which had a "Memory Leak" Information to them , but so far none has made a difference , maybe someone
    has the same Problem.
My Cluster has routher large VMs on it compared to the Numa Seize ( VM 4-128GB, on DELL R720 ( 2x CPU (8C) 384GB RAM  )
( The VMs have also a High IO Usage , as there RAM is used as a RAM Database ( zb. Mongo DB ) )
    Regards
    M

    Hi Alex,
there is something wrong here and not an "normal" Memory Leak , as for that reason I would see the amount of Page Pool Memory assigned to a given Process.
If that would be the Case I could use RAMMap or even Vmmap to adresse the Paged Pool usage, but those Tools dont reflect the Usage like the PerfCounter does.
The Windows Driver Kit for a 2012 R2 System is WDK 8.1 which has a necessity of VS2013 ( Important: Before
installing WDK 8.1 Update, you need to install Visual Studio 2013. See the Visual Studio links on this page.)  My Last Hope was to get poolmon.exe and identify the Source for the "Paged Pool" Usage .
We are having that Problem now since the Early Days of Windows 2012R2 and because the Usage is quite "hidden" we only found out , when we ran out of Memory without knowing why.
Worst Usage Rates where up to 150GB of Paged Pool  !! given a RAM 385GB ( Dell R720)  that is quite a Number.
Im wondering if noone else with a cluster ( seems that the Node numbers in a Cluster and the "RAM" Seize of the VM ( >32GB )  have a tremendous impact on that given Problem , with a 4 Node Cluster the Problem isnt so big )

  • WinXP and Vista memory usage with Illustrator CS2 - is Vista winning?

    Dear forum.
I have an AI-template file where I insert some very large PNG files into it, modifies the template a bit and then I print the the resulting document in PS-format. The PNG files may be as large as 100 MB (24-bits, approx. 100 mil. pixels in total). It appears that while a Vista-based machine has no problem loading one or even two copies of these huge files into memory, a WinXP-based machine can't even load a single file into memory. Instead, I a dialog box with the message: "Could not read the file because the plug-in could not understand this file". Is it really a faulty plug-in or is it just CS2's way of saying "not enough memory" in a quirky way?
All in all, I would like to hear whether someone has the same experience with Vista, ie. it seems to be better at memory management or better at allocating memory for Illustrator CS2, enabling it to load large PNG files.
The specifications of the WinXP-based machine:
    Pentium 4 2.6 GHz
    3 GB RAM
Virtual memory 4095 MB in a physically separate drive from the OS disk
All Visual Effects are turned off
Has Illustrator CS2, Adobe Acrobat 7 and Distiller installed (and a few auxilliary programs)
The specifications of the Vista-based machine:
    Dell OptiPlex 740SF
    AMD x2 5000 (2.6 GHHz)
    2 GB RAM (667 MHz, 2 x 1 GB)
    250 GB SATA disk
    Windows Vista
Adobe Creative Suite 2 Standard + Adobe Creative Suite 3
    Thanks!

    Hi, everyone
I got a new t440p 20ANA00UHH (8GB RAM, win8 64bits) about one week ago. It works really well, but its memory usage  confused me. In Task Manager, the "Performance" option shows memory is 68% (5.4G in use), but "Users" option shows memory usage 66% (1019.5M in use). Is that normal ? I just opened some websites and word files.

  • Turn off display on sql*plus and increase memory for oracle?

I want to turn off the output display on SQL*PLUS window and SPOOL the output to a file since the result is very big. i tried to SET TERM OFF but it doesn't work. Anybody knows what's the problem? or is there some other commands to use? My oracle is 9i. thx!!! And anybody knows how to increase the memory usage size for Oracle's jrew.exe? it's too slow when i try to retrieve some big size data from oracle.

I just answered this question on the OTN -> General forum. You could try the SQL*Plus startup switch -s to startup SQL*Plus in silent mode, eg:
    C:\SQLPLUS -S

  • High Eden Java Memory Usage/Garbage Collection

    Hi,
I am trying to make sure that my Coldfusion Server is optomised to the max and to find out what is normal limits.
Basically it looks like at times my servers can run slow but it is possible that this is caused by a very old bloated code base.
Jrun can sometimes have very high CPU usage so I purchased Fusion Reactor to see what is going on under the hood.
Here are my current Java settings (running v6u24):
    java.args=-server -Xmx4096m -Xms4096m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -XX:PermSize=256m -Dsun.rmi.dgc.client.gcInterval=600000 -Dsun.rmi.dgc.server.gcInterval=600000 -Dsun.io.useCanonCaches=false -XX:+UseParallelGC -Xbatch ........
With regards Memory, the only memory that seems to be running a lot of Garbage Collection is the Eden Memory Space. It climbs to nearly 1.2GB in total just under every minute at which time it looks like GC kicks in and the usage drops to about 100MB.
Survivor memory grows to about 80-100MB over the space of 10 minutes but drops to 0 after the scheduled full GC runs. Old Gen memory fluctuates between 225MB and 350MB with small steps (~50MB) up or down when full GC runs every 10 minutes.
I had the heap set to 2GB initally in total giving about 600MB to the Eden Space. When I looked at the graphs from Fusion Reactor I could see that there was (minor) Garbage Collection about 2-3 times a minute when the memory usage maxed out the entire 600MB which seemed a high frequency to my untrained eye. I then upped the memory to 4GB in total (~1.2GB auto given to Eden space) to see the difference and saw that GC happened 1-2 times per minute.
Is it normal in Coldfusion that the Eden memory would grow so quickly and have garbage collection run so often? i.e do these graphs look normal?
Also should I somehow redistribute the memory available to give the Eden memory more since it seems to be where all the action is?
Any other advice for performance improvements would be much appreciated.
Note: These graphs are not from a period where jrun had high CPU.
    Here are the graphs:
    PS Eden Space Graph
    PS Survivor Space Graph
    PS Old Gen Graph
    PS Perm Gen Graph
    Heap Memory Graph
    Heap/Non Heap Memory Graph
    CPU Graph
    Request Average Execution Time Graph
    Request Activity Graph
    Code Cache Graph

    Hi,
    >Is it normal in Coldfusion that the Eden memory would grow so quickly and have garbage collection run so often?
Yes normal to garbage collect Eden often. That is a minor garbage collection.
    >Also should I somehow redistribute the memory available to give the Eden memory more since it seems to be where all the action is?
Sometimes it is good to set Eden (Eden and its two Survivor Spaces combined make up New or Young Generation part of JVM heap) to a smaller size. I know your thinking - what make it less, but I want to make it bigger. Give less a try (sometimes less = more, bigger not = better) and monitor the situation. I like to use -Xmn switch, some sources say to use other method/s. Perhaps you could try java.args=-server -Xmx4096m -Xms4096m -Xmn172m etc. I better mention make a backup copy of jvm.config before applying changes. Having said that now you know how you can set the size to bigger if you want.
I think the JVM is perhaps making some poor decisions with sizing the heap. With Eden growing to 1Gb then being evacuated not many objects are surviving and therefore not being promoted to Old Generation. This ultimately means the object will need to be loaded again latter to Eden rather than being referenced in the Old generation part of the heap. Adds up to poor performance.
    >Any other advice for performance improvements would be much appreciated.
You are using Parallel garbage collector. Perhaps you could enable that to run multi-threaded reducing the time duration of the garbage collections, jvm args ...-XX:+UseParallelGC -XX:ParallelGCThreads=N etc where N = CPU cores (eg quad core = 4).

  • Akonadi and mysqld memory usage[Solved]

After the mysql update I've noticed that mysqld for Akonadi is using more memory than before. While before I didn't even notice it for the most of the time, now it's the first biggest constant user of memory.
And I have no idea why.
How do I even troubleshoot this kind of problem?
    PS.: the usage is this:
    Virtual: 387M
    RES: 148M
    MEM% 7.4
Which increased my memory usage from arround 900-100 to 1200
Last edited by Primoz (2011-02-11 18:41:35)

Okay what I've learned is that you have to keep .config files clean. I've reinstalled Akonadi, deleted ~/.config/akonadi folder and after some problems because of it, I finally got things working and things kind of dropped a bit.
But mysqld with akonadi is still a mem hog. But I guess this is how it's supposed to be.

  • App Download and "Other" Memory Usage

For a month or so I've noticed that my iPhone 5s "Other" memory was on the order of 6gb... Deleted texts and emails attempting to reduce that size, to no avail...
Today I noticed that an App (Numbers) that had begun to download from the App Store (about a month ago), had not finished (WiFi was required for the large download, but had been turned off and on several times, but not long enough for the download to complete).  It wasn't obvious to be that Numbers hadn't finished downloading...
I deleted Numbers from the iPhone, and installed it from iTunes on my iMac.
Upon the deletion of Numbers, my "Other" memory usage went from 6gb down to 2.25 gb, which was reasonable with some large maps and Good Reader docs I have on the phone...
The Numbers app is about 224Mb in size... So, it appears that the iPhone sets aside a very large part of memory for an app as it downloads, and then clears that memory once the app is installed...(though the amount cleared was on the order of 17x the size of the Numbers app...)
I notice a similar usage of Time Machine storage space... Small Time Machine saves require very large amounts of HDD space to be reserved for the backup... Wonder if the same logic is applied to the iPhone... Or perhaps every time WiFi was turned on and Numbers would reattempt to download, the amount of Other memory it required from the iPhone would increase...?
    Anyone else noticed this behavior?
    Bob

    Update...
For "grins" I just un-checked "Sync Music", and synced my iPhone... Other Data went to zero.  Re-checked "Sync Music" and synced, and only had 250Mb of Other on the iPhone.  After a full sync with 7gb music, the Other memory number is back up to 2.23gb...
    Interesting...

  • Itunes 11.1.5.5 memory usage windows 7

I have a very large iTunes library.  Lots of music, movies, tv shows, etc.  It links to the AppleTV in the media room.
Lately, around two updates ago, memory usage of iTunes went all wonky.  When first started it uses around 100k. Within a few hours it's over 1.5gb and stops working.  It happens faster if we're using AppleTV.
It's becoming really, really frustrating, to the point where my wife has just quit using it because when iTunes locks up AppleTV stops working.
I've seen this issue crop up elsewhere on the forums, but have yet to see a real solution.
Turning off album view or poster view makes no different.  This happenes no matter what screen iTunes is displaying.
    MH

Thanks for your help. Started itunes in safe mode and it still closed down after approx an hour. There are no add-ons or plug-ins installed. I had previously checked the safe mode and also uninstalled all apple software in the order that one of the help pages indicated. Then redownloaded and installed itunes - made no difference.
After opening itunes it works fine with no problems - what baffles me is that it then stops working even if the software is not active at the time.

  • My iphone has no pictures on it and my memory usage from photo library is 6.2 Gigs.  How can I reset and get back this lost memory?

After resetting my phone, I re-installed apps and connected to my computer.  I made sure I didn't sync any pictures.  My iphone has no pictures on it, yet the memory usage on itunes AND the phone tells me that the iphoto database is taking 6.2 Gigs.  Is there a way to zero that and regain that memory?

I already tried to factory default the phone and restored it.  Same problem.... I have no photo's on my phone and still have 6.2 Gigs memory being used....  Pls help.

  • Mail.app and AB Memory Usage Growing and Growing

I've noticed this over the past week, but I don't know what could have triggered it. Both Address Book's and Mail's memory usage are growing out of control. Since I can easily not run AB much, it's not a big deal, but Mail.app is my preferred email application and I need to run it all the time.
When I start Mail.app, it's around 65M RSIZE, but if I leave it running for a few hours, it quickly balloons up to 2+GB in RSIZE. I'm sure it'd keep getting bigger if I didn't restart it.
This is with one account (Exchange) on a 6,2 MacBook Pro. I'm not currently using any plugins for Mail.app.
Any idea what might be causing these problems, how I can help diagnose it, and how I might be able to fix them?
    Thanks,
    Pete

  • Broadband usage high and jumping in usage

    Hi
I've been with BT for 6 years at my current address and I had this exact problem back in 2014. It is now happening again. - It turned out my on Demand service was being counted to my broadband usage!!
I took up Netflix (as the On Demand servcies being withdrawn) on the 5th of May, I received the You View box on the 8th May and set it up over that weekend. Sine then my usage has jumped, but I  had not realised this until I received an email to say I'd used 6GB of my 10GB allowance.
I checked the usage monitor on 22nd May and my usage was 6.77GB. I telephoned on the 24th May as my usage was showing 7.11GB. I have changed my wireless password and have done everything BT has asked. This morning 6.30am I checked my usage and it showed 9.5GB used! As I've had to come to work I have not been able to telephone you. I've just logged into my account (10.50am) and my uasage is now 10.36GB!!
My average usage is about 3.25GB p/mnth. Nothing has changed except for the new You view box and this weekends usage is impossible! We were away from the house during the day coming home in the evening, only watching some Netflix. It is just myself and my partner. My PC has been turned off since Thursday and my Chrome book was turned on, on Sunday Morning to change my wireless password, then off again. Our mobiles connect to the BT wifi hot spot and not our hub.
I am hoping your going to tell me that something similar is happening and you (BT) are going to fix this and reverse all charges as  I have received an email to say I am now going to be charged for this excessive use. Please help as this is very worrying!

I have started with the BT you view box a few months ago and have taken on Netflix with BT when I took on the contract. Since then my broadband usage has rocketed and is going way over my 20gb usage allowance. However I am not using my laptop or other devices much and in fact less than I have done for some time. The only reason for this must be that the netfix usage is being added to my general broadband usage. In some cases this was adding on 2 and 3 gb per day when no other devices were being used at all . BT had promised to call me and had even sent me a text telling me when the call was coming ....but it didnt happen.  I have now done an experiment for the first week in June were I have not used the you view for netflixs or on demand at all but continued to use my laptop for emailing etc as per normal. this has shown my usage as only 0.23gb. Clearly there is something wrong and the you view box usage is 'leaking' and being counted in my general broadband usage. I am very unhappy about this as I was sold the benefits of using the you view box on demand services and netflix on the basis that its usage did not count towards my bills. I have never had netflix before so there isnt any confusion about it previously being used by me. Niether have I used it on any other device ....its all been through my BT box .....and I dont want to be charged for it. If any of the ondemand and netflix is being put onto my broadband I was obviously miss sold the device in the first place. Whenever I call the customer service helpline I get different answers and am told that someone will call me back ...they never do ...check your CS phone tapes of my calls and you will see.
looking at the community forum I can see that I am far from unique with this problem .
Can someone call or communicate with me to solve this asap it is of great concern to me.

  • As soon as Firefox opens, it starts increasing memory usage until it maxes out, and it won't actually close unless I end the process in the task manager.

Even if I'm not doing anything, no matter how few tabs I have open, Firefox will slowly increase in memory (RAM) usage until it's using nearly 100% of my computer's RAM, and everything basically freezes. Even when I close the window, the process continues to run, and I have to end the process in the task manager in order to get it to stop using RAM. I've tried disabling all my add-ons, and that does not help.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • After iTunes 11.2 upgrade, big CPU and kernel memory usage

The first time I opened iTunes 11.2 after the upgrade, I hit next. I then fought to open Podcasts settings because I had a feeling the delete listened to would be on (it was), then turned it off. It was very difficult to get the iTunes UI to respond. Eventually the whole machine was slowing down, so I had to kill it.
After a reboot, I started iTunes again. This time I didn't even get the UI to come up, just high CPU usage (75-90% by iTunes), and quickly-growing kernel_task memory (> 4-5GB, was around 2GB before starting iTunes).
I can't get the iTunes UI to come up anymore.
    Repairing disk permissions didn't help.
I have over a hundred podcast subscriptions, and some of the subscriptions have hundreds of episodes downloaded. I don't want to delete any of that because some of it can't be redownloaded. (Not that I can delete anything right now, as I can't get the iTunes UI to come up!)
    Has anyone else seen this?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Insertion will increase memory usage

    Hi,
I notice that whenever my application does an insert, oracle DB will increase its consumption. As described in numerous posts in the forum, the memory is not released after the operation stops. However, when the application calls the connection.close() method, memory consumed earlier on will be reclaimed.
I am wondering, if connection pooling is used (where connection is not disconnected but put back into the pool), the system will eventually run out of memory. Is this a correct assumption?
The scenario is observed in a server with the following specs:
    Oracle DB: 9i Release 1
    OS: Windows 2000 SP 4
    Processor: 2 x Intel Xeon 1.8Ghz
    Ram: 1GB
As i am not a DBA, i am not sure of the values in PGA, SGA etc. The application uses Oracle JDBC Type 4 driver (ojdbc14.jar) to do the insertion via a prepared statement.
    Please advice. Thanks.

Any insight is greatly appreciated :)
