Highest quality video for streaming

I have a series of training videos shot in HD. They will be hosted on YouTube and and Viddler and embedded in blog posts.
My source video is very high quality. I would like some guidance concerning the optimum settings when I encode the videos. My final image size will by 640 x 426.

It's not very big. I'd recommend editing and exporting at the native 1080, then using the HTML5 <video> tag for inclusion on the web page. You can specify the size of the 'player' to those smaller dimensions, but this leaves the option for people to full screen it at the native 1080 for a better image.

Highest Quality Possible for PDF

Main Question: ignoring the size of the illustrator file, when you save the file as a PDF, intended for commercial print, what are the absolute best settings possible?
Before answering “Press Quality Preset,” (thank-you I know that already) maybe I should provide further detail. Where to begin...
This was the initial hitch that prompted further inquiry
I was trying to save an illustrator file (CS6 in case that makes a difference) as a PDF for print. Naturally I selected the Press quality preset. However, when I examined the settings for this preset, I found that my ‘Color Bitmap Images’ are using a JPEG compression. Sure the Image quality is set to the maximum, but it’s still a JPEG compression- thus prone to image degradation if it needs to be resaved (or at least that’s my understanding). It seems reasonable that the simple answer would be to just change the compression from JPEG to the only other option- ZIP, in order to maintain the quality. Duh!
However, I’m left wondering why JPEG is the automatic choice for the press preset if the ZIP compression provides better quality (possible answer- File Size). Furthermore, if the compression setting is not actually set for the highest quality possible (in an attempt to keep the file size down), then what other settings have been lowered in addition to this one.
My hope, as a result of posting in this forum, is to create a new PDF preset in illustrator that will optimize the quality of all possible aspects for any illustrator document. For ***** and giggles let’s just assume the document was originally created with an 1/8 inch bleed, using CMYK color mode, and a 300 ppi raster effect. Plus, this document has utilized every aspect of illustrator in some way (no this is not a real document- but rather a hypothetical document that is being used to identify the best possible settings available, no matter what the content is).
Will these settings be overkill for the majority of documents created in illustrator? Yes! But that’s not the point- the point is, I’m exhausted of having to sift through mountains of information, to figure out the reasonable and the friendly-file-size settings I “should” use for every document I create.
Now, I’m just looking for the big *I WIN* bomb that’ll cream all future documents, regardless of the content, transparency, effects, fonts, etcetera… etcetera (that’s a fact).
Maybe I could’ve skipped the story- but it just seems like people always end up having to go back to explain themselves anyway.
Input on... any of this would be greatly appreciated

PDF/x-1a -- No need to change anything other than maybe the marks - color bars, etc. But the overall comrpession and color settings are already appropriate for press.

How to export a complex Keynote to high quality video for DVD?

I have had dozens of attempts to turn a complex Keynote into a high quality video.
Either they turn out disappointiingly way low res
or they are very choppy with half the transitions gone
or they Cannot make the video at all
HELP.
I need to turn this project in to my client today.

If you use the DVD export in Keynote 3 with a self playing movie, the quality will be fine...just don't trust what you see on your mac screen, play it on a DVD player to check the quality. I did a test a while back and it was only the pauses that looked bad.

pay close attention to what I complain about...it's just the slide pauses, not the normal motion playback, which means selfplaying stuff looks pretty decent (though never as good as the original, but that's the fault of the DVD format, not Apple).

What are the settings to for best quality video for playback on computer?

I'm not having any software or hardware issues. I have tried differnent combinations using AVI, MPEG and WMV and I'm still not satisfied with the quality.
I have used the same settings as my original video and it still is no where near the quality. Maybe this is as good as it gets, any help would be appreciated.

I'm using the recorder on my computer to record my screen and voice to create video tutorials for my students to watch on-line. This creates a 720x480 AVI file and has good quality.

What is the best preset to use for HD-lite?
The best is one that matches the Source Footage 100%. Unfortunately, with that variation on HD, I do not think that PrE, even PrE 10, will be able to come close. PrPro, however, does have the ability to do Custom Sequences (think a bunch of mini-Projects inside of a Project), and one can match odd Frame Sizes, FPS, etc.. I was hoping that PrE 10 would have Custom Presets, but it did not show up. This limits PrE to standard Frame Sizes, which is not what most video screen capture programs offer. Your footage does not match to any real HD-Lite Frame Sizes, so you will still have the same problem.
It does appear that your program, while different than the TechSmith Camtasia, does use the TSCC CODEC. This will give you a bit more info. Also, though you do not have Camtasia, or CamStudio, I think that the article, that I linked to above, might be of use.
Now, what options does your video capture program offer for output?

Trying to output best quality video for later work on a PC?

I have a video file that was sent to me to work on, add effects to, then send back to a customer for him to incorporate into a larger video project.
I have finished my work, but am wondering what settings I should use in Compressor to maintain the best quality file that will be easily readable by PC editing software (such as Premiere)
Please, any suggestions?

The best solution is to ask to talk to the guy with the PC and ask him what he needs. Hopefully he has some clue as to what he is doing and will give you direct answer. If he doesn't know what he is doing the first question you need to ask is he working in HD or SD? Start there.
Basically you really need to talk to the other editor. If you don't then you are just wasting everyone's time.

Opinions on Highest quality encode for DVD

I am doing a 16:9 Loop DVD for a tradeshow display. It will be shown on a 50" Plasma screen. I am trying to get the best quality encode on the screen. The project is 50 Sec long (storage & encode time not an issue) and contains both graphics and video elements. Video elements were shot on HDV. Compositing done in After Effects at 1920x1080. There does not seem to be a direct way to encode from AfterEffects to MPEG2, probably because the frame size is not MPEG2 standard. What would be the absolute best workflow to get to MPEG2 with as little artifacting as possible? I'm thinking uncompressed 10bit 4:2:2?

Someone here said once that 10 bit was overkill and that there may be issues with some encoders's conversions from 10-bit down to 8-bit.
Having said that, I'd use either 10-bit or 8-bit uncompressed codec. You probably want to resize your After Effects render down to 720x480 on export from your render queue, rather than have the MPEG2 encoder do it. Then take the uncompressed 720x480 file and MPEG2 encode away. Since it's only 50 seconds, I'd do a 7.5Mbps CBR 16:9 encode (if delivery is via DVD-R).

These are not necessarily artistic projects, home video of children, christmas', vacations, etc - just want a respectable result.

I use both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06, if I want to make a DVD I prefer iMovie 06. iMovie 08 is not as DVD friendly as iMovie 06.
iMovie 08 has replaced "Share to iDVD" with "Share to media browser". Also iMovie 08 cannot set chapter markers, this has to be done with another program.
When using iMovie 06, one mouse click will set a chapter marker EXACTLY where you specify. In just a few seconds set all your chapter markers. When you are done editing just "share to iDVD 08" and all of your chapter markers will be there!
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.
Your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie 06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD 08 in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie '08, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
Apple includes iMovie 06 as a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

Capturing live video for streaming

I know this is a Premier hardwere forum
But I could not find a better place to ask
i want to capture live video (i have avchd camcoder vixia hfs 21) to my laptop and stream it in the same time with the Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder
i read about the Black magic Solution like the Intensity Shuttle, with good price, but i understand that this machine good for cupture but dont work well with the FMLE.
Does anyone have a solution for me that can fit a laptop too.

Selecting frames of video for streaming

Hello all,
I have already searched in the forum for something like that but did not fund any answers.
I have huge pieces of video stored with Intermedia (10g, release 2), and I am looking for some way to stream only the video between frames X and Y.
Is there a way to do it without using something as JMF?
Any ideas?

But does realserver, like Helix, allows to select start and stop time within a video on an ORDVideo field? Directly from intermedia, using plugin?Yes. (Helix and Realserver are VERY related).
I have also looked on JMF, do you have any experience at this?You can do anything JMF allows with files with multimedia types. So, if JMF supports this, the answer would be yes.
Basically, binary data stored in BLOBS can be (and are) accessed randomly, just like files.

How to best prepare video for streaming

I have several hundred of instructional video that are in the .rm format. They were previously served on a helix server. How do I best convert the files efficiently so they will stream on an xserve? Thanks in advance

I would suggest visiting Telestream Website (www.telestream.net) and looking an Episode Pro. It can take multiple formats and convert them in batches. If you have hundreds of files the $500 bucks may be worth it. You can also download the demo and run it to make sure the it does what you want. Demo on makes 30 second clips but at least you will know it will do what you want to do. I know that it can encode files to realmedia .rm files so I'm pretty sure it will go the other way. It's really a work horse of a product.
also check out Handbrake...I not at all sure if it does realmedia to .mov but it's free so downloading and giving it a test run doesn't cost anything.

How to...highest quality mpeg4 for youtube?

I have posted video's on youtube but they always have poor resolution. Any suggestions on how to improve these?
I've seen some other videos that look very good, but when I transfer my QT to MPEG4, the res changes significantly.

Since the file upload to YouTube becomes the source of their exported "Flash Video" you don't get much control over the end product.
If you've given them your "best" and they give you "**" then that is what you'll get from any export.
Try the Export to iPod settings (H.264 and AAC audio). They may butcher these too but it's the best you can send to them.

I just got iTunes 9 and I want to know what the HIGHEST quality import settings are with the exception of Apple Lossless. I usually import cd's as
AAC
Stereo Bit Rate: 320kbps
Sample Bit Rate: 48.000 kHz
Channels: Stereo
Now when I go into the custom menu and try to set these settings, it gives me an error message that reads the following:
"The selected combination of bit rate and sample rate is not allowed."
I was thinking about using WAV but I want a format that will be compatible with other/future personal media players as well such as Zune's and Creative MP3 players. Right now I have an iPod and don't plan on changing anytime soon. I just want the highest quality sound for my ears to hear.

well i personally think you should go with mp3 at 320kbps (max for that file format) main reason for this is that mp3 is compatible with pretty much everything, where as aac isn't although it is getting a bit better. the main difference between aac and mp3 is in the lower bit rates, i.e aac 128kbps sounds equivalent to mp3 192kbps (suppoesdly) but when you go from 192kbps and up both file formats sound basically the same, just a variation in file size. ig you want the highest quality for you ipod i would say 320kbps mp3. anything higher isn't worth it becuase most earphones cant even pick it up, only if you have high quality ones.

FCE export settings for higher quality video

Hello. I'm a self-schooled newspaper video features producer and relative newcomer to Final Cut Express, shifting from Premium Elements. I've just begun using it to upload videos to my newspaper's finicky web system, which will only accept .flv files of a certain size. My modus operandi has been to export my videos as large .avi files, using Quicktime conversion and DV/DVCPRO/NTSC, with medium quality, with 16 bit sound set at 32 Khz. Then I run that .avi through the Adobe Flash Media Encoder with a frame rate of 15 fps, deinterlacing and resizing the screen to 640 by 480. This procedure (outlined by our former video editor) produces serviceable web quality video (You can see video that results from using these settings at http://wvgazette.com/multimedia). So, two questions: 1) I have created an 8-minute FCE music video for my band and wish to export it at a higher quality (for use on Vimeo) than these newspaper settings. Which of them do I change so that a higher quality video results without waiting all night for a massive file to upload? 2) And wthere might I turn for guidance on better understanding the Sanskrit of FCE video export settings for newbies? Thanks for any help.

The simplest way to produce good quality video for the internet is:-
1. File>Export Using QT Conversion.
2. The "Format" window should say, "QT Movie".
3. In "Use" select "LAN/Intranet" from the dropdown menu.
4. Click "Save" and when it has finished encoding, upload it.
Do not mess about altering audio settings, frame rates etc.
Using the above settings an 8 minute video would be encoded in around 20 minutes (depending on computer speed) and would be well under 100MB.
Is that too big?

whats the highest quality export for dvd. I have a client who wants to watch it on computer, tv and projection with best quality.
Also, is a video_TS file better quality than a fcp quicktime mov file?

To get the highest quality export for DVD, you will need to buy Compressor 4 and create your own preset -- you will need to calculate the max bps based on the amount of video and the size of the DVD (SL vs DL).
Video_TS isn't a file, it is a folder and part of the structure of the DVD. DVDs use mpeg2, which is highly compressed and there will be a maximum level of quality you can get based on the length of the video.
A quicktime mov file by itself can contain most any codec, and thus any level of quality. But generally speaking, it is meant for viewing on computers, unless you have a streaming solution with something to decode it for the TV.
If your original source is HD, you could consider outputting to blu-ray.
