Home Networking with Vista

I just purchased a backup drive Clickfree Wireless automatic backup - see http://www.clickfree.com/products_c3.php#
I want to leave it plugged into my Mac, and have it back up my Mac and laptops (I have an iMac and 2 Laptops... one running Vista, one running Windows7). To do that I need to network the computers. They are all connected to the same wireless router. I can get the laptops to see each other, but can't consistently get them to see the iMac. A couple times they did, but mostly it doesn't show up. Once I was able to access the iMac from the Windows7, but the Vista machine tells me the username is wrong.
I found thishttp://support.apple.com/kb/ht1549 and followed those instructions. One thing: after going to the Advanced Network Settings and setting up the WINS workgroup (I add the workgroup name in the dropdown list), then Apply... if I later go back into that screen, it's not showing up. It's like I never entered it.
I think I'm rambling... can someone tell me... in just the simplest terms possible... what I need to do on the iMac to get my Windows machines to see it... or if I need to do something to my Windows machines?
And don't say I should have bought MacBook... I know
I'm running 10.5.8
Thanks

Instead of browsing, have you tried entering the specific IP and share address directly into the field in the Map Network Drive window. This the what is shown in the Mac's System Preferences Sharing pane at the bottom, where it says, "Windows users can access your computer at..."
You want to enter it in this format.

Not sure if that will make a difference.

I am currently trying to connect to a Laserjet 1012 that is set up on our home network with a laptop running 64 bit Vista.  I have tried to just rght click and drag the printer from the networked computer it is directly connected to and then try the install option.  This brings up a dialog box stating that it cannot find the correct inf file or drivers to install the printer.  I have tried downloading and extracting the Vista 64 bit drivers from the HP support site but I can not find the inf files needed to complete the install.  Had been running an XP laptop with the printer installed the same way and am currently using another laptop with 32 bit version of Vista that was installed the same way with no problems.  I have tried several different things to get this printer installed but still can't get it up and running.
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • How do I hook up a G3 iBook to my home network with only Windows machines?

I'm completely ignorant of Apple technology but pretty good for a novice with Windows PC's. To help a family member with an iBook (Mac OS 10.3.9) back up a gazillion family photos (at least 3.2GB in the iPhoto Library), we want to connect his iBook to my home network with two Windows machines (one of which is connected via UBS to an external drive for backup). But before I just connect his iBook to an Ethernet port on my Westell modem+router, what should I know?
I need to know all the basics and all the steps, in as detailed a manner as you can stand to tell me.
And when it all looks good, what are the steps to copy the iPhoto Library to a designated spot on one of the Windows machines (or that external hard drive)?
By the way, this is the iBook:
    Machine Model: iBook
    CPU Type: PowerPC 750 (2.3)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 640 MB
    Bus Speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.6.4f1
    System Version: Mac OS X 10.3.9 (7W98)
    Kernel Version: Darwin 7.9.0
    Many thanks!

    Hello,
When I got my first mac this ( http://macs.about.com/cs/tipstutorials/a/xposxsharing.htm ) article helped me enormously.
It's very easy to write to the disc once you've set up the network.
On the mac locate the iPhoto library (normally open finder and click on pictures).
Open another finder window and locate the windows PC on your network, then mount the folder to which you will back up the iPhoto library.
Drag the iPhoto library to this folder.
    Wait.
    Wait some more.
When the copy is complete check the images can be accessed from the PC.
Unmount the folder from the mac by dragging it to the trash.
    Congratulations.
Beware though, if you're like me you'll find this apple thing adicitve!!!

Is it possible to share a printer (attached to a Windows-7 PC) on my home network, with an iPad, iPhone or a Mac?

Possibly. You'd need to see if your printer has any programs you can put on that attached computer to allow it to be a print server.
I'd start with your printer manufacturer first. See if they offer anything. for your model. If not, then you can look for any printer apps or programs.

Yes you can use home sharing with just a local network. Obviously you won't have access to all the other content.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Some drive manufacturers have produced apps for this purpose, if your drive manufacturer doesn't do this then you might look through the app store for third party solutions.

  • How to hook up a G3 iBook to a home network with only Windows machines?

Before I attach an iBook (Mac OS 10.3.9) to a home network with only Windows machines, what should I know? (I intend to connect the iBook to an Ethernet socket on my Westell modem+router.) My reason for doing this is to back up a million family photos in the iBook's iPhoto Library.
    This is the iBook:
    Machine Model: iBook (Dual USB)

Please give me as much detail as you can stand to write, because I know nothing about Apples. It's for my dear old Dad, who has no other way to back up priceless photos.
For example, when things are working well and the iBook "sees" the Windows machines, how do I copy the iPhoto Library?

  • Simple Home networking with Mac OS X Server

    Hi all,
Can anybody give me a quick guide to setting up a basic home network with the use of Mac OS X Server for central administration?
I have 2 desktop macs, 1 mac laptop and 2 PC laptops and occasionally I have a number of friends bringing around their laptops.
I would like to set up all the basic services so that guests and registered users can access share points and home folders . I would also like to be able to use the DHCP service for this and be able to use basic services like DNS and AFP.
Does anybody know how to quickly set this up on a private home network?
I am new to Mac OS X Server so be gentle
    Thanks.

John Detroye works for Apple education in Colorado, USA. He has written what i consider the best practical guide to setting up a Server system for use in a School, which is essentially what you want to do. Although he wrote it initially for 10.3 Panther Server, almost all of it still applies.

  • Setting up home network with WRT160N

ok got the WRT160N for christmas and just trying to set up a home network. I am not real familiar with setting up networks, so please treat this thread as talking to complete first timer, lol, with a bit of knowledge.
Scenario= Want to have main pc wired and another pc in other room wired as well. with access for two laptops.
Now I had an old dlink wired router and had absolutely no problem setting this up( main pc & spare pc in other room)
    Someone please help me
    TY

Download the userguide for your router from linksys/download and follow the instructions.
    Greetings from Northern Ontario, Canada

  • Just got a new IPOD Touch and it wont connect to our Wifi home network with a Belken N Router. Our router uses WEP 64 bit security, but had a "blank" password field, which the IPOD did not like. Changing to a 6 char numeric PW didnt help either.

OS is whatever OS ships with current IPOD Touch
I cannot understand why the APPLE engineers have designed this product so that it has SO MANY WIFI problems.  This is supposed to be an easy-to-use product.  We've had no problems connecting our new laptop, our ROKU box, etc, but it seems impossible to get the IPOD touch to work.  NOTHING LIKE SPENDING XMAS MORNING DOING APPLE TECH SUPPORT TROUBLESHOOTING TO LEAVE YOU IN THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT!!!  Argh!
In fact, the only way we have been able to get this expensive brand new IPOD to work on our home network is to DISABLE SECURITY in the router settings.  THIS IS ANYTHING BUT A GOOD IDEA.
DON"T KNOW WHY BUT MANY OTHER USERS ARE REPORTING THE SAME KIND OF PROBLEM SO APPLE ENGINEERING NEEDS TO GET BUSY AND FIX THIS PROBLEM SO THAT NEW USERS CAN CONNECT TO THE INTERNET WITHOUT HAVING TO BE TRAINED ROUTER ENGINEERS TO DO IT!!!!
Ok, sorry for the rant, but surely those of you who are experiencing this share my frustration.  This is not why I bought an APPLE product.
IS THERE ANY POSSIBILITY THAT APPLE WILL NOT ALLOW A WIFI PASSWORD with more than one identical alphanumeric character?  Any ideas?  We also tried eliminating the 40 MHZ setting under Bandwidth settings in the router settings for our router, but it made no difference.  The router has the latest firmware, too.  Running out of ideas, and am ready to box this unit up and send it back!

Thanks, Bob!  You are correct.  And, we learned this as we spoke with APPLE TECH SUPPORT by phone on Christmas day (800-APL-CARE).  One of their reps spent the time to help us troubleshoot this, but the boiled down conclusion is your answer, and to repeat for the benefit of others, here is what worked:
    1. With our Belkin router set to "out-of-the-box" WEP 64 bit security, we could not get wireless access of any kind.  Only with the Security Mode set to DISABLED, could we gain access.
    2. Changing the router's security mode setting to "WPA/WPA-2...." and entering a new min. 8 char passphrase, and then entering that same passphrase into the IPOD Touch, and restarting the router, did the trick!
Based on this, and some info found in another posting, I can only conclude that the IPODs and IPHONES do not support WEP security mode in many generic routers used by thousands of consumers.  Hopefully, those same consumers can figure out how to change their wireless router setttings to WPA/WPA-2 security mode and ALSO get all their other wireless devices (PCs, laptops, WII boxes, ROKU boxes) all reconfigured to WPA mode, too.
I THINK THE BOTTOM LINE HERE IS THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE THAT APPLE NEEDS TO ADDRESS WITH WEP COMPATIBILITY and it may also be the case that MOST CONSUMERS ARE USING WEP 64 BIT security on their home wireless routers?
In any case, it's working now, so anyone who is having problems should try changing to WPA mode and post back here if it worked for them!

  • How to configure home network with Airport Extreme + D-Link DIR-665

    *hello everyone,*
*I had these two working fine together until the D-Link took a dump the other day. No explanation. Just stopped working until I reconfigured everything.*
*Which then led to my Airport Extreme being unable to connect to the network at all, much less the internet...*
*My home network is set up like this:*
    *Optimum Cable*
*Motorola Surfboard modem --> D-Link DIR-655 (via ethernet)*
*- Provides wifi and ethernet connections on one side of my house*
*DIR-655 --> Airport Extreme (via ethernet run to other side of house)*
*- Provides wifi and ethernet connections on the other side of my house*
*My MBP won't connect to anything other than my AE running N, so I have that set up primarily for my MBP over wifi, while feeding an ethernet connection to a Netgear router running B/G, for my iPhone and other devices.*
**So here are the relative details:**
*I decided to start fresh and do a factory default configuration with my Airport Extreme. My working system from earlier was essentially it's own wifi network, but the airport utility 'insists' that I need to run my AE in bridge mode. I've tried that, but I can't get online. I can see my shared connections, so something's getting through, but I cannot connect to them, in addition to being unable to get online.*
*I'm not really sure how to best illustrate this problem, so I've ran through the process again and jotted down a few notes. Excuse the rambling nature of my narrative, this is a 'blow by blow' account of the Airport Utility setup process:*
    Airport version 7.4.2
    IP address 192.168.0.192
    router address: 192.168.0.2
    Configuring over Airport connection.
    - I want AE to join my current network
-.. connect AE to my network using ethernet to extend or create second network
    - select device AE will connect to using ethernet - DIR-655 network (displayed w/ airport icon?)
    - create an additional network (through ethernet)
    AE updates..
    - problem 1 of 1 : unsecured wireless network
    wpa wpa2
Bridge mode or share a single IP address using DHCP
    selected bridge mode
results: AE has green light, airport utility is satisfied but no connection to network is possible. Shared connections are visible, but unable to access
    next try:
    manual setup
    Wireless mode: create wireless network
radio mode: 802.11n only (5 GHz)
    channel: auto
    wireless security: WPA2 personal
    (bridge mode still active)
(this is the exact setup that worked for years before..)
    updated…
AE light is green, but no connection to internet or shared connections (though visible)
    back to airport utility
    manual setup:
    internet menu:
connection sharing: share a public IP address
    update
    --> 2 problems
    DHCP Beginning address: 192.168.0.2
    DHCP Ending Address: 192.168.0.2
    chose 'assist me'
(now one shared connection to Mac Mini becomes active? Had selected it earlier. Able to browse folders, but not share screen)
AE refreshed now with amber light, with reported problems
Problem 1 of 2: Internet Connection
Your Apple Wireless device does not have a valid IP address. Make sure your Apple wireless device is connected to your broadband modem or local network… etc
    - changed IP address to match router IP address (?) Utility goes on to next problem
Problem 2 of 2: Conflicting DHCP Range
This Apple wireless device rejected a DHCP address in the same subnet as its internal DHCP server. You should probably switch your Apple wireless device to be in bridge mode. If you still want to be using DHCP and NAT to share a single IP address, you should change your DHCP range.
    - maintain selection: share a single IP address using DHCP and NAT (utility forces you to: ignore; skip; or select bridge mode - which doesn't work..)
    - chose 'skip' for problem 2
    - updated AE..
    New problem:
Problem 1 of 1: Double NAT
This Apple wireless device has a private IP address on its Ethernet WAN port. It is connected to a device or network that is using Network Address Translation (NAT) to provide private IP addresses. you should change you Apple wireless device from using DHCP and NAT to bridge mode.
    - selected Bridge Mode
    updated AE…
    "Setup Complete!"
    Unable to connect.
** At this point, I am still able to see my shared connections, and while iTunes is open, I can play my shared library that is on my Mac Pro, which connected to the DIR-665 via ethernet, through yet another D-Link router (DIR-615)! I am still connected to the Airport Extreme via wireless, so the system is working, to an extent.*
*So I'm not sure what to do. How can I remedy my IP address issue? Bridge mode doesn't work (as far as I've experienced), so I'm struggling with my DHCP settings..*
*Thanks to anyone who has any suggestions!*

    Hi Preston,
I would recommend not starting the numbering scheme for the IP addresses using a '0'. Yes the range is 0-255, but some numbers are reserved, and not generally good practice.
Also, assuming you have reset all factory defaults, start anew and have the modem --> router using NAT for dynamic IP addresses --> (other side of the house) Airport Extreme --> not a NAT configuration, but you need a simple switch. Do not use the NAT capabilities on this one. Maybe, just maybe the computer will work now. This will eliminate your double NAT and also help (hopefully) with the D-Link.
Sorry I cannot help more, I do not own any of the products you talk about, however I have networking experience. Hope it helps.

  • Why can I connect to my home network with my iPhone 5 in one room, but when I move to another it is 'unable to connect to the network'

At home, I can connect my iPhone 5 to my home wifi network with no problems, as long as I stay downstairs.
As soon as I go upstairs my phone disconnects from the network. I can still see the home network it in the available network lists (with full signal strength), but when I try to reconnect I get an 'unable to connect to the network message'
If I move back downstairs it reconnects
This has only started happening in the past week or so
I've tried to forget and rejoin the network, but this doesn't work
I reset my network settings on the phone. This worked for a couple of hours and I could connect to the wifi upstairs, but now it won't connect again.
Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

Sounds like your wi-fi signal strength has degraded.  Try rebooting your wi-fi router, or get it serviced.
Do you have similar issues with any other wi-fi routers?

  • Configuring BT HomeHub 4 on home network with AirPort Express & Time Capsule

I have changed my broadband provider from Sky to BT in the UK and hence from a Sky router to a BT HomeHub 4 router but can't get the new router to work as before with my home network and an extended wireless network running off an AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule.  I had the Sky router with the wireless network off acting as the DNS server and the AE and TC set to connect using DHCP, Create a Wireless Network and the Router Mode set to Off (ie Bridge mode).
I am not an expert but I think the issue could be due to the different BT hub IP settings (Hub IP Gateway Address and DHCP Network Range).  From discussion forums I am also not clear whether it is better to use DHCP, Static or PPPoE settings for the AE and TC.
Has anyone managed to configure a BT HomeHub with a home network and an AE/TC for running the wireless network?

There is really very little difference in the setup between the sky hub and the BThub.
BUT the apple routers do not take kindly to sudden changes of management.
Reset both to factory and start over.
The TC or AE plugged into the BThub will still be in bridge mode with create a wireless network.. and the Extreme working in extend wireless mode.. unless you have them tied together with ethernet. (or visa versa depending on your layout.. AE in bridge and TC extending.. same difference).
You can just leave the BT hub wireless on.. or turn it off as you like. Setup can be a bit tricky as the airport utility seems to insist on the router plugged into the Hub taking over as main router.. this is wrong.. but it is hard to get it to do what you want.. so just finish the setup in the airport utility then manually edit the setup to do what you want.
    Or do it fully manually.
I gave a full set of instructions here.
Linking AirPort Extreme to my bt home hub
    Note:
You have express in the title and extreme in the text.. but it is same thing from setup point of view.

  • How do I control my home network with NWM on all my computers

I just activated my NWMagic and I have downloaded the program on each computer on our family network. My problem is each of them have access to all the controls. I want to be able to have one person, me, control what happens on the network and the network settings. How do I do this?

I am not sure. I want to be the administrator to our family's home network. I purchased NWM so I can monitor my network and control what my children are doing on the internet. I had to download the NWM on all of the computers on my network. The problem is each computer can access all the NWM software.
I was going to uninstall it on the kids computers and I couldn't do that. I want them to have internet acess but I want to use the controls that NWM has. When I go on their computer, I see exactly what I have on my computer. I don't want them to know it is even there. I want to monitor them, limit their time on the internet and be watch out for them.
When I configured my network I put it on a flash drive like directed but it wouldn't work. So I downloaded the whole program and used my activation code on each one. We have 5 computers on our home network. I want my children also to have access to the printer on my computer.
I'm not sure what to do. Everytime I call the tech support it costs me money to have them come on to my computer and look at things. I just spent $39.00 for NWM and then another $9.99 today to get it set up right. I like the features and it helps me trouble shoot if one of my kids mess around with my computer when I am not around.
Any help would be so appreciated.

  • Error 0x00000709 Networked printer not working in a home network with HomeGroup enabled.

I should start by describing my network by device.
Gateway device - Motorola SB5120 SURFboard cable modem

Windows 7 Home set to homegroup for the Desktop (Wireless)
    Brother Printer Model: HL-2170W (Wireless)
HP Printer Model: HP Officejet 6500A Plus (Wireless)
    What have I done?
Installed drivers on 2 of the 3 computers. The final computer (Win7 Home) was added in later and works fine when connecting to the internet through the WAP. However it does not even find the printer when trying to install the driver which is a part of the
process for driver installation for the Brother Printer.
I had set up the printer for two of the three computers and had it working at one time however in trying to get the printer set up for the final computer I somehow have messed up those settings.
During that setup I tried to move the printer to a networked printer (It was shared before and installed on the network with both the Desktop and the Win7Pro lappy able to print but it would not print for the new arrival to the Homenetwork. This caused
me to seek a solution which involved installing the proper driver in the Win7Home and the discovery that the driver installer could not find the Brother printer at all which prompted the moving of the printer to a networked printer.) (The Win7Home computer does
not find the HP printer either but that is a can of worms yet unopened.)
I am sure there are a few things that I did not do correctly and I may have left out some additional information which you may require. If I can help clarify this question please feel free to query me. I thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
