Home Sync Error

Hey Guys,
My users are receiving the samw error "Home Sync Error" with their PHD set up. It not all of them, but I haven't found a pattern that is causing it though? No relation in workstations etc.
There are various errors like "Unknown Error:[1]rename('/Volumes/...." and also one for deleting a file. Most of them seem like temp files but the .GlobalPreferences is also in there?
Has anyone else had any experiance with this issue, or can shed any light? Any help would be greatly appreceated.

Well I posted here not giving to much info so I should probably give some more. This is a post I posted else where I have copied!
Here are some more details:
It would seem that when a user logs on their Portable Home Directory is mounted under the /Volumes directory (in my case /Volumes/groupname/username/). We all know this already. We also know that with stuff like this and mobile homes etc clients make preferences (like .GlobalPreferences) on a per-computer basis, if you look in myhomefolder/Library/Preferences/ByHost we can see many .GlobalPreferences files each ending with the MAC Address of a machine we have logged onto. So for my students there are many entries for the different machines they work at.
It would seem (as far as I can tell) that when a student logs on we create a temporary .GlobalPrefernces file in our mounted home directory at /Volumes/teachers/james/Library/Preferences/ByHost/.fstemp.PHD-R-R9FKAzSqm_-james52hfaStqfe4.noindex
(Note here that during the time I or anyone else if logged on, this file doesn't actually seem to exist its not in the folder?)
And when we logoff we rename the temporary file to replace the actual .GlobalPreferences file located on the server, which for my example user was /Volumes/teachers/james/Library/Preferences/ByHost/.GlobalPrefernces.0011223344 5566.plist
So, when my students logoff they get:
"Unknown error:[1] rename('/Volumes/teachers..../.fstemp.PHDR_R9FKAzSqm-james52hfaStqfe4.noindex', '/Volumes/teachers...Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist')".
So my question is, why would that be? Am I on the right lines? Does any one have any idea why this is happening?
All input is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help so far.

  • Home Sync errors with Chrome files

Recently a bunch of users in our office have been getting constant Home Sync errors, most commonly with Google Chrome files. File Sync opens and lists a number of errors syncing files including:
    Favicons
    History
    History Index 2012-02
    History index 2012-03
    Network Action Predictor
    Shortcuts
    Web Data
among others. Any idea what's going on? Are the files locked by Chrome or something so Home Sync generates errors? Did something change in Lion or Chrome in the last few weeks because this never happened previously?
    Lion 10.7.3
    Chrome 17.0.963.65

I ended up having to enforce this from our Open Directory server. You could uncheck "Library" from your homesynced folders on a per machine basis but that will have other consequences because things you would like to have backed up/synced won't be.
From our mac server: Workgroup Manager->(Computer group name you want to manage)->Preferences->Mobility->Preference Sync->At logout+manually
So I don't have it sync on login or in the background, only when they are logging out, hopefully warnings won't show up or it will be less intrusive.
Homesync still has a lot of rough edges, I wish there was a cleaner option

  • PHD and Home Sync Error

I am running Snow Leopard server 10.6.4 and all clients are running Snow Leopard 10.6.4.
When a user with a PHD network account opens a datafile such as Word or Excel, a home sync errors ocurrs. As soon as the file is closed the error disappears but it is very frustrating to have these messages pop up whenever a file is in use by the user. I don't recall this being a problem under Leopard.
Is there a setting which can disable these pop ups when the user is user the file?

  • Home Sync Error: File Changed 3 Times

I have background sync turned on, and get this error each time:
"The file changed during each of the last 3 syncs. An application may be periodically changing the file. Try closing the file or quitting applications."
How can I prevent this error (very annoying)? There's nothing wrong with the file being changed, as I am developing on it.
    Thanks!
    ~Mike

I was having this same problem with the "Unknown error" message with many files.
I spent a lot of time trying to figure it out, and I came upon a solution in my own case.
Turns out that there were differences between the extended security attributes on the directories containing the files in question between my local machine and the server. What's worse, my server disk has ACL (access control lists) turned off, so when my client tried to update the attributes on the server, it failed. So the whole sync failed.
I fixed this using the "ACL Fix" application, which simply clears the ACL's from files in whatever directory you specify. I applied it to my local home directory, removing all extended security attributes for all my files.
Then, next time I re-synced, everything was fine, no more "unknown errors".
I hope that helps someone, because this is a pernicious problem!

  • Home Sync completely f**ked up for years now

Can someone at Apple please pull themselves away from their iPad for a couple of days and FIX PORTABLE HOME SYNC. I'm sick of using it - it's been broken since it was introduced.
If it would just honor the rules set in workgroup manager would be a start. And yes I've tried dumping the managed preferences folder which makes no difference at all. Tried rebinding clients too. I don't EVER want to sync the library folder or any of it's contents yet it still does no matter what you do.
While you are at it, please fix SUS which is also completely broken in 10.6 server. Does anyone at Apple ever even read these forums?

Like most OS X applications there are a lot of settings that just aren't available in the GUI. The Preference Manifests gives you these settings as well as a description: Here are the settings available for homeSync:

  • Errors in mobile home sync

    Hey guys and gals,
    Happy holidays!
I have a quick question about Home Sync. We are getting some errors when the Home Sync happens on our clients from things such as Google Chrome, and the Adobe suite. Is it possible to ignore those errors and not display them at all?
    Cheers
    Jacob

Adding to  this: the autofill information in Safari is lost as well. Can I copy that over from another machine?

  • Mobile Account Home Sync Duplicate Files

We use profile manager, with an OSX mobility profile with home sync, for management of our OSX devices, combined with AD sign on with "create a mobile account on sign on.
For many of our users, they are experiencing files are duplicating with .network extension on the end, and that deleted files are being re-synced back to their device.
Setting the keep most recent option with the sync conflicts appears to fix the .network file issue, but the returning of deleted documents, appears to be repeat occurring.
I haven't found any documentation regarding the issue on how to resolve it, and I am currently in the process of trying to replicate the issue myself.
Is there a work around or fix to this issue?
Appears to be happening across different versions of OSX. 10.8 - 10.10

Hi, the only workaround I know of, is to uncheck the library folder from syncing, ANYTHING running live while the home folder is syincing (MS office for example, it's DB is in your docs folder, will cause a sync error, as well as iphoto.. etc.. the only other way to fix this, is to set it to sync manually at login & logout. I wish my issues were that easy

  • Home sync not working

I have problems with my snow leopard server, 10.6.8.
The student folder permissions show that the owner has read & write but the home sync fails. Says the share isn't available.

I have the same issue on the Lion 10.7.3 server.  Still working on a solution.  Got me stumped so far.  I can see the share and access it for read/write through finder - however, when I try to sync the home folder through the menu item I get the same error.  Weird.

  • .Mac Sync Error and no syncing

I get a .Mac Sync Error with this notation. *-[NSCFDictionary set: Oject for Key:] nil value
I have Synchronized my G-4 to .Mac. In other words .Mac should be the same as my G-4. When I try to sync my iBook and Mac Mini to .Mac I get the above error message. All 3 machines are running 10.4.2
    Help will be appricated
Mac Mini, G-4, and white iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

I've had the same issue for a while, but I think I have now managed to resolve this.
    Using Workgroup Manager:
    Select user(s) in question
    Select Preferences
    Select Mobility
    Select 'Rules'
    Select 'Home Sync'
Under the Manage Options, add to 'Skip items that match any of the following'
for match choose 'ends with' and add:

  • Sync error with open Office 2011 files

Have recently installed Microsoft's Office:Mac 2011 Home and Business. Have a setup with MA and PHD syncing. Whenever an office file is open FileSync reports a syncing error of that file, which after a while is annoying. Didn't get this with Office 2004. Does anyone have a remedy for this?
    Thanks
    Tomas

I've not noticed this issue, and I have moved several movies over, and they fall into the 500-600MB range. Have you tried any of the troubleshooting steps? Try to power the phone off/on, then try a reset. That is accomplished by holding down the home button and the sleep/wake button together until you see the Apple logo, then releasing. Ignore the screen with the slide to power off option. If that doesn't seem to do it, it could be one of the files is having a problem. You say that eliminating all of them lets the sync work. Do you have USB 2.0 ports? Try to add just one file at a time to the sync and then see when the sync finally fails. It could be something corrupt in one of the files, and you might be able to elimiate the one by this method. If possible, then redo that particular file, be it a music file from CD or video, and then try again. See if any of this helps.

  • Portable Home Syncing corrupts iPhoto Library

    Server setup:
Snow Leopard Server 10.6.2 (clean install)
Everything setup according to spec; works great.
    Client setup:
    Snow Leopard 10.6.2 (clean install)
    iLife '09
Portable syncing rule set to sync the Pictures folder ONLY at login and logout. At no other time is it sync.
    Bug:
Everytime it syncs; the entire iPhoto Library gets corrupted and I get a 'There was a problem syncing this file'
When I check the file, the iPhoto Library is a generic white icon with a size of a few megs versus the original 5GB. (yes I have a backup).
Any idea what may be causing this?
I cannot deploy Snow Leopard Server for my clients because of this silly bug.

    Hi all.
I'm also having serious problems concerning "Home Syncing".
So far those are my conclusions:
    • Home Syncing cannot understand when a file is locked. It will simply replace the "archived" file on the server with a corrupted and incomplete one. (Time Machine, for instance, delays the syncing of that file until it is no longer being used):
    • Because of the last problem it's impossible to use the syncing interval on the System Preferences. It's simply begging for havoc and chaos.
    • Home Syncing (again on direct opposition to Time Machine) does not understand the concept of bundles (or packages, whatever is the correct expression in English... English that I'm not a native nor a fluent speaker, sorry about that
Not being able to understand those wonderful "folders as a single file" concept makes it try to copy my full Aperture library, even if I just open and close the thing.
So it's guaranteed fun for almost half an hour every time that I do some logout sync.
    • Even using only login / logout sync, Aperture library will get eventually corrupted, as will pretty much every other item that I try to sync that happens to be a bundle (That God for 1Password automatically backup of it's own library, otherwise I would have lost all my logins passwords and Software serial numbers).
    • Every so often files that were deleted on a machine on the last day, simply find their way back at login syncing.
And the opposite also happens. Changes made in a user folder on one of the machines, simply don't replicate when a user logs in onto another one.
    • If a folder or file name is changed, Home Syncing will not understand that as a change.
Instead it will get from the server the old file/folder while keeping the new one.
Since it will copy the full content of the folder, just changing the name back to the old one, you better pray that there's not that much info inside otherwise it's time to grab a coffee and the daily newspaper.
    • Copying is slow. Painfully slow!
In a full Gigabit Ethernet connection, whose transfer while using AFP are extremely fast, Home Syncing can take 10x the amount of time to copy a similar folder.
Home Syncing seems pretty much as a 2nd class citizen on the Server package.
It's copy capabilities are way bellow of the expected, showing basic errors that were quickly fixed on Time Machine but that still remain here since (at least) Mac OS X Server 10.5.
I like this concept... actually I like it a lot.
As long as you have access to a Mac OS X Server, you can basically create your own cloud.
Even without having to sync the full home folder, just a specific "cloud" folder (something like a dropbox folder).
That connected with a Time Machine backup to allow you to retrieve older version of a file (whenever necessary) and you would have a great and safe working environment... something that I would love to do, if only Home Syncing wasn't just a big disaster.
Let's hope that Apple can figure out what's happening and release an update to fix this.

  • ICal /sync errors

I have recently ( last couple days) encountered sync errors when trying to sync iCal between a lampshade G4 iMac, a flat panel G5 iMac, and my G3 600MHz iBook. All are current re operating system. Interestingly, both bookmarks and address book seem OK, just iCal - i.e. my wife will input data into our 'home' calendar on the kitchen counter, and after syncing, the changes will NOT appear in the same calendar on the other computers. I have done all the fixes described in these posts - no joy. Never had a problem before, and I am now reliant on this stuff working, so please, Apple, if you are there, something you have done ( no new installs on my end other than your Software update stuff) has messed up iCal -please fix it.

    Dear All.
Have just updated both computers with the latest version of 'Tiger'. 10.4.3.
"Seems" to have resolved the comms sync problems. Well - to the extent that .Mac & the computers were talking; even if it does say "You have 2525 amendments to your Calender "!! Indeed I now have duplicates in Bookmarks and on the .Mac web site but that I can live with. [ Address Bk seems OK ]. Suggest when U are given the choice of "merging" or selecting .Mac as you source, consider which is most correct.
To convince myself that it all now works, I entered "Test from Laptop / iMac " etc in Address Bk and iCal and checked to see if it showed up on both computers and .Mac. - Which it did thank goodness. Wonder if we will ever know what that "update to isync" was ? Would be nice to kept informed, having spent hours trying to resolve it. Apple ????

  • How can I completely reset home syncing?

Portable Home Directories remains unreliable and buggy for me. I have a Mac mini server and two client machines: an iMac 2010 and a MBA 2009. I have tried everything I could find on the net about PHD syncing but have found it very buggy and unreliable. Currently:
    - when logging in as myself 50 conflicts are reported, but the remote file cannot be displayed (circular wait 'bar')
    - the client starts one after the other sync trying to do the same
    - Files removed on a client return form the server... sometimes
    - Unknown errors reported but files on both sides are identical (openssl md5 shows that)
Home Syncing rules are managed always and controlled from Workgroup manager
Currently, the situation is so bad that my main account has become unusable.I am looking for fail safe instructions to completely reset home syncing.

I dont know about any complete reset but this is what i'd do.
Make 100% sure that everything is on your machines by switching off airport and unplug then Network port then turn on and check everything is there. Proceed at own risk
if it is and you know what your doing and happy that everything is backed up etc.
Leve the computers off the network until the end
On the Server for each accoun turn off mobile account syncing, creation etc everything in mobility preference should say never.
Set your Home directory in Workgroup manager to None for each of the accounts
    Save new settings
Delete both the accounts home folders on the server (you will need the correct permissions to do this) empty trash
Reenable the home folders and create home on save
Go to the mobility preferences and set create home folders when next login etc  Check the Use local home template option,  Dont set any other options in there yet except under rules -> home sync - Manage -once or always depends on what you want then Apply
Reconnect the computers to the network (I always do this via ethernet not wireless, wireless sometimes causes problems) and restart and log into the account , it will sync away for a while (wireless can be used after the first sync)
Change settings in the mobility after the full sync if you need to and are sure you know what each setting will effect.
NOTE: If you have a huge iTunes library, Movies folder or Photos folder this can take ages perhaps think about taking them out of the sync.
Home syncs always have errors depending on what files are open at the time of sync etc
This is done from memory as i only had to do this about 2 weeks ago but i am fairly confident i didn't miss anything

  • Mobile home syncing problem

    Hi all,
I have a mobile home syncing problem. When the sync runs it returns the following error:
Unknown error: -[SStore myNodeForNode:isDestNode:]: Unable to find node for "Pictures/iPhoto Library/Data/2008/6-Aug-08/DSC00042.jpg" in store "HomeSyncMirrorPeer-DfrxJp1ET07-zivj" Please try again later. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.
This file does not exist both on the server and on my mobile laptop.
Any ideas how to solve this?
    Thanks,
    Ziv

    Shawn,
I've done the deletion of those folders a number of times, with no luck.
The most recent attempt to get this to work was:
    1. Delete ~/.FileSync and ~/Library/FileSync from the server machine.
    2. With a brand-new install of OS X on a laptop, create a local administrator, join the server, then login as the user account that wants a mobile account
    3. Look at logs
I still get an exception on the server

I'm quite frustrated with the whole situation at this point. I'm sure some folks have gotten it to work, but since it has exceptions like this silently, it slowly corrupts the data in an account. I still want to get it to work, but am skeptical that it will.

  • Sync error with heavy music/video files

Hi. Ever since i've updated to 1.1.4 i have started getting this sync error whenever i try to upload heavy files (over 150mb) on my iphone:
"The Iphone,"M'sIphone" cannot be synced. The disc could not be read from or written to."
What could be the problem? This only happens when there are heavy files. If i remove those videos or music then the sync goes thru just fine.
Also, didnt have this problem earlier. Only started after i updated to 1.1.4.
