Hooking up a PC and Macbook to 1 firewire harddisc

I still got an old pc for some stuff for school and audio. I would like to be able to hook both my macbook and my pc up to 1 firewireharddisc to easily exchange files. Is such a thing possible? what equipment do i use?

Here is a link that will help you understand better:

In general you must have firewire card as well in your old pc and the external drive must be formatted to ms-dos partition using os x disk utility, since XP now only offer to format using NTFS, and NTGFS is readd only for Mac.
Good Luck.

  • Sony Handycam and MacBook Pro via Firewire 800

    Hi there,
I'm trying to connect my Sony Handycam (HC30E) to my MacBook Pro via the Firewire 800 port, but it simply won't register.
I bought a cable online that goes from my Sony (iLink) to the Firewire 800 port, so connecivity should be sound - but nothing at all is registering on the Mac.
I've updated all apps and Snow Leopard to the latest builds. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Cheers!

    On paper, NO.
800 is back compatible with 400 and it should work fine.
On the forums a few users have ended up in your situation.
The common denominator is 800 ports on newer Macs.
Still don't know for sure what the trouble really is.
I suspect dodgey cables not pinned out properly.
If your cable is at the budget end of the market I'd suggest trying one at the quality end. Shielded and OFC style.
If the System Profiler can't see the camera then nothing else matters until it does.

  • G4 and Macbook!??!

kk i have to questions and if you guys could help me it would be greAT!!!
ok so my first question is, is there a way to hook up my G4 and Macbook so they share an internet connection while my MB is hooked up to the internet through airport?
second is there a way i can use my macbook as the monitor for my G4?
if you guys could help id appreciate it alot! thanks guys and girls

    Yes and yes (almost).
First, connect the two Macs with an ethernet cable (doesn't matter if it is straigth or crossover) and then in the MacBook, open System Preferences and go to Sharing; in there go to the Internet menu and there you can setup your MacBook to share the internet from AirPort (or any other port) to ethernet. In the G4 just setup in Network (in System Preferences too) to connect with the ethernet port via DHCP; that's it.
About using the MacBook display as the G4 display, well, not quite, but you can use Apple Remote Desktop to control the G4 from your MacBook.

    Hope it helps.

i just got new new Mac pro. I hooked up my nook and my Ipod classic to it. But the library system doesn't recognize the Mac yet and I need to use my old laptop. How do i change these back?

If you do it correctly you will not lose anything. See this tip: Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive

  • How do I hook up external speaker to macbook pro

How do I hook up external speaker to macbook pro?

The external speaker needs to be active - have it's own power source and amplifier - then you can just hook it up with an appropriate cable from the headphone output socket of the Mac.  If you want to go wireless, you would need to get an Airport Express - probably overkill - or get a bluetooth dongle that could be hooked to the speakers input.
If the external speaker is passive, you would need to attach it to a HiFi and hook the Mac up to the input of the HiFi.

  • Why did my external HD monitor go blank after working fine while hooked up to a new MacBook Pro?

Why did my external HD monitor go blank after working fine while hooked up to a new MacBook Pro? I have the Moshi adapter and HDMI hooked up to the 27 inch monitor. It was working fine and when I came back after lunch the monitor was blank but the MacBook Pro screen was fine. Could it be the adapter?

could be, try powering down the mac, with the exmonitor connected and see if it is recognized

  • What adapter to use to hook up CINTIQ 21UX to MACBOOK PRO ?

What adapter to use to hook up CINTIQ 21UX to MACBOOK PRO ? Where can i get a good quality one and which dvi model

if you have the latest MBP with miniDisplayPort or Thunderbolt, you will need to get this adapter in addition to one of these dvi or vga cords (I would go dvi) DVI-I, VGA, DVI-D (dvi-i being the optimal one)

  • Docking Station for the MacBook and MacBook Pro

Check it... I've been waiting for one of these. A bit pricey, but worth it. I'm so sick of the wire exchange every time I take the laptop somewhere...

    Adam,
I saw your post and what you have sounds like what I am looking for. What is the cooling device that you have called? I want something I can plug everything into and leave it hooked up and then have one plug/cord into my computer. It sounds like what you did.

  • Having troble networking my pc and macbook

I have been trying to connect my pc and macbook, but can not do it. The PC is hooked up to the linksys router. I downloaded service pack 2 to run the wireless network setup, that di d not work. I followed all the instructions and when I go to go in the finder and connect to server, I no longer get prompted for a username and password, Now I get an error message 36 saying not all information can be read or written.
Apple support says it is a linksys problem, lnksys says it is an apple problem. Before I disabled my keychain (because it was popping up every two seconds in safari) i got the password prompt. Now I get nothing. I have a printout of the network name, know the workgoup, and computer name, and the WEP key if that helps.
Ay assistance would be greatly appreciated.

My personal experience with file sharing has only been through direct connection. I used a regular rj45 network cable (it wasn't even a cross-over!) and turned on a few settings within Apple Sys Prefs.
    Internet & Network: Sharing
-Turn on Personal File Sharing & Windows Sharing
Turning on Windows sharing will result in an IP address being displayed in the same window confirming that you're on the network. Be patient - and read everything on this screen. You will see that in order to share, you must enable an account to use Windows sharing.
If you only have one account, it will not work. Create a second guest account and associate that account to the Windows sharing setting. This new account will have restricted access. If you want your PC to see files, you will have to copy them into the ../Public/Drop Box folder which is accessed from the hard disk/Users directory. Within users you will see all the accounts on your computer. Once you're inside the new account you created you will understand why only certain folders (by default) are accessible.
I've used various Linksys and D-Link routers. My Macbook could not work with the WEP security settings. I discovered that turning off WEP or moving on up to the more secure settings such as WPA allowed me to connect to these routers wirelessly.
Once you've set your file sharing options and changed the security settings on your router, you should be able to see the Macbook by browsing your network neighborhood on the PC. Once you find the Macbook, you will be prompted for a user name and password. This is the user name/password that you specified earlier for the new guest account you created to associate with Windows File Sharing.
Try this - let me know if it works (I hope it does).

  • We have an "old school" DVD player (Sony dvp-nc80v) that plays music throughout our home.  Is there a connector that we can purchase to hook-up our iPhone or MacBook Air to also play music until we buy some new equipment?

We have an "old school" DVD player (Sony dvp-nc80v) that plays music throughout our home via connection to multiple embedded speakers.  Is there a connector/piece of hardware that we can purchase to hook-up our iPhone or MacBook Air to also play music until we buy some new equipment?

A crude but effective way would ,assuming the Sony has an AUX in ,
    is a stereo bluetooth receiver
plugs into aux and recives music over B/T from
the iPhone etc ,as used by many in vehicle
    For instance as an example

  • How will an external Hard drive designed for the macbook Pro work with my White Macbook?  My  white macbook has a Firewire 400 and the G-Tech HD has a 800 to 400 compatible cable for the firewire.

I am asking this because I want the G-Tech Hard drive  says that it is designed for the macbook pro.  Yet, I want to back up faster with by using my firewire 400 which is not an option on the one designed for the white macbook that does not have a firewire (only a USB port.)  The G-Tech Hard drive comes with the 800 to 400 compatible cable and has 5400 RPM with 750 GB.  Also, I've heard that laptops with low battery (mine all the time)  won't have the power for a bus powered Hard drive (as in no ac plug in adaptor.)  Can I just plug in my laptop?  Any one know the answers from experience with this hard drive?

As far as I know, if a harddrive works with a Macpro, it should work with the Macbook: if your Macbook is low on power, plug in the AC adapter
If your Macbook has a firewire port, then it should be fine. BUt i would do somemore research first.

  • How can I safe my data back from the Time capsule to iphone and macbook?

    Hi,
last weekend we were robbed while being on vacation and iphones and macbook air got stolen. Good thing was that at home we had a time capsule and our normal macbook. As soon as we get the new iphones and the new airbook we want to get our itunes and apps and datas back to the iphones and airbook ... can somebody tell us how to re-safe or back-safe stuff from the time capsule back to the equipment?
Thank you ... I feel so "naked" without my phone :-(
    Virtualkate

Sorry about your loss. Follow the directions here to use Time Capsule to restore your new Air to the state your old Air was in when stolen. When you first connect your new phones, you'll be given the option of restoring from the backup of your old phones or setting up as new. Restore from your previous backups, followed by syncing your content back to your phones. You should be good to go. Maintaining current backups makes this a piece of cake.

  • IPhone iOS 7 and Macbook Air Mavericks, deleting hotmail emails to POP folder! Help!

I have an iPhone using the iOS 7 and a Macbook Air using Mavericks (although I'm not sure how relevant this is) and both are set up to receive and send emails to my hotmail account.. Every so often (I think a month or so) I check my emails on either device to find that my hotmail emails have been deleted from my device. When I then log on to hotmail's website, they have been moved to a POP folder, so I then have to move my emails to my inbox and the phone and macbook start receiving them again, very strange! I assume somewhere the settings are wrong, on either my macbook or phone (or possibly hotmail itself). If you have any ideas, please help me, it's getting very annoying!
    Thanks!

    Hey lkpolovchik,
Thanks for the question. Yes, you can continue to use iCloud Contacts, Calendars and other services with OS X Mavericks and iOS 8 devices. Only some features require iOS 8. For a full list of minimum system requirements by feature, check out the following resource:

  • Iphone and ipad can find network, iMac and macbook 10.8.2 cannot

Had a network fault. When fault was fixed, ipad/iphone & Dell studio xps laptop reconnected automatically. Imac 2012 and macbook 2010, 10.8.3, can see network but not connect automatically. Tried connecting to network and get message connection timeout has occurred.
    Got connection by;
    Open Network preferences
    Join other network
enter network name select - Security wpa2 personal
    enter network password
However - I need to do this after every sleep/reboot - is there a fix for this?
PS - I noted that I had previously been on WEP security setting and had real problems connecting to external devices consistently, such as epson wireless printer BX935FWD, and Western Digital My Book Live Duo. Since moving onto WPA2, these connection now work consistently, but macbook and imac always need to be forced to connect to network, in manner described above
Does anyone share a similar problem/managed to resolve network issues? - very frustrating.....must be an OSX issue as all other devices connect without issue.

I've managed to download 10.8.2 for my MBP Retina 13.3" but when I try and install I'm told that none of my discs are suitable i.e. Internal solid state drive with 370 GB available, or attached thunderbolt drive.   Meanwhile my iPhoto won't work. This has arisen because I migrated from an older MBP which was already running 10.8.2 and had latest iPhoto onto a factory fresh 10.8.1 machine.

  • I want to synchronise music I have between ipnone 3g and macbook pro - I am told if I synchronise I will only have the music from my macbook and will lose my iPhone music of which there is much more.  How do I get all my music on both my iPhone and mac bo

I want to have all my music on my iphone and macbook (and pc if possible) but when I try to synchronise I am told I will lose any music from my iphone which is not on my macbook (there is much more on my iphone than my macbooK).  How do I keep all my downloaded and copied music and have it available on both machines (plus pc if possible)?

The music sync is one way only - computer to iphone.  The exception is itunes purchases: Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purcahses
The iphone will sync with only one copmptuer at a time.  Sycning with another will erase the current content of the iphone and replace it with content from the new computer.
