thin horizontal lines appear occasionally across window of firefox, if i switch to finder, not there. appears to stay with windows of different programs.
lately above the keyboard along back edge in the middle under monitor gets very hot almost to hot to touch, uncomfortable on lap.
i have no idea what the memory cards are. some have suggested i should replace memory cards?

I don't really know about the new models as far as typical operating temperatures. The ones you mention are not meaningfully high to me. My 2011 13" MBP with an i5 CPU typically idles near 50º C.
As for the speed issue that is hard to evaluate on the basis of personal opinion. You can download and run GeekBench benchmarks and compare the results to those reported for the same model configuration. You can use CineBench to benchmark video performance.

  • My macbook pro retina gets very hot and slow

whenever i use my macbook pro retina for an extended amount of time 1-2 hours watching videos online or playing games it gets very hot, starts lagging and gets unresponsive, i can only use it with a fan underneath basically, my old macbook pro had a similar problem, it took like 3 weeks of them checking it to find a problem which took them another couple of weeks to fix, i cannot be without my laptop for any extended period of time. fans inside seem to be working fine, but it still get incredibly hot... please help!!!

  • Macbook Pro case getting VERY hot!

This is my first Mac, but not my first laptop. Using it for 5 days, the temperature reads out at 85 degrees F. Currently, I am only running iDVD, Firefox, and Microsoft Messenger. The temperature jumped as high as 91 degrees at one point.
While doing simple tasks such as Messenger, and web browsing in firefox, it reads at 79 degrees F. IS this normal for a Mac? I hear that Macs get very hot, that hot? Should I be returning it because it has a problem?

"I hear that Macs get very hot, that hot? Should I be returning it because it has a problem?"
From whom did you hear this? During the past day or so, you have asked some very fundamental questions, and I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the computer's operation. There's a wealth of information available on Apple's website, and it behooves you to check it out.
Rather than worry about the temperature of individual components, you should spend your time enjoying - not worrying about - your computer. Your computer is operating normally. You should use the computer on a hard, flat surface, and be sure that the rear vent slot is unobstructed.

  • My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

I get the impression that most of the users on older hardware experiences similar temperature issues on Lion for a long time now. Awaiting for confirmation from the original poster.
In the meantime I'm just cautious with regards to pushing the machine to such extreme temps, since something tells me such behaviour which includes monitor flickering and the likes is nothing but abnormal for any type of use...
Any clues if 10.7.5 does anything on this? If not I'm afraid i see myself going back to SL for good...

  • Is it normal for a 2011 2.2 macbook pro to get really hot while watching a HD youtube video?

Is it normal for a 2011 2.2 macbook pro to get really hot while watching a HD youtube video? The fans get really loud and everything gets pretty hot when im just watching some lame video on youtbe thats HD? for a 2.2 quadcore wth 1gb of video ram this is an issue? I would think it wouldnt even phaze it.

never heard of perian. its a quicktime player? would this help?
Give Allan's advice a try. I'm curious to see how that works for you.
4GB RAM could be part of the issue. Open Activity Monitor, select System Memory and see what it says for Page ins, Page outs, and Swap used.
Perian isn't a necessity, but those three together usually cover all the different formats you might encounter.

  • Macbook Pro 15" gets really hot

My Macbook Pro 15" (bought few years ago. i think it's 2010 or 2011 model) gets sometimes really hot. It's ok when I use it for browsing or programming or reading etc. but when using flash (eg. youtube) or pipelight, it starts to get hot. After some ten minutes flash starts making the laptop hot. Sensors reports 80 °C which is just below the "high". With pipelight it gets even hotter and when I tried minecraft it got _really_ hot as soon as I started the actual game (not in the menu), almost 100 °C which is the "critical" line. I'm using cinnamon as my DE (which actually doesn't matter because I also tried without DE). My fans are working correctly, at least I think so because they are humming and sensors reports about 3000 rpm when running flash. (about 6000 when running minecraft). On OS X I don't have this problem.  I hope there's something I can do for this. I really have no idea after reading tons of "linux getting hot" topics online. I'm still a little bit noob with linux so if someone has an idea how to solve this I'd appreciate clear explanation.
    Thank you for helpping!
EDIT: Reading from some forums about macbook pro getting hot I've found that the normal operating temperature is actually 50 - 100 °C. So maybe it's ok.

i had similar issues w/ debian on my hp machine. here's some ideas to try:
    1. make sure your graphic card is installed &  configured correctly
    2. install powertop and thermald and setup a good configuration
    3. take a look at cpu frequency scaling and maybe dial it down a bit.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 getting really hot?

I have an early 2011 macbook pro 15" monitor.  Lately, I haven't been able to even touch the bottom of my laptop because of how hot it gets.  Here's the temperatures and fan:  Right now, it's cool enough to pick up, but about twenty minutes ago the computer got really hot and the fans didn't sound like they were on very high (this was before I downloaded the widget to see the actual values). I was also only using Chrome, no other apps. I started to notice this when I started using facetime: the fans suddenly didn't spin like crazy when the temperature rose.  Is there any fix/tip/help for this?  I will try and update once I get the higher temperature to appear again.

    Hi t,
You can try an app such as SMC Fan Control which will allow you to set the fans to the speed of your preference.

  • Macbook Pro battery getting too hot

    Hi,
I got my macbook nearly 2 months ago. its 2012 13"macbook pro n i have running mountain lion 10.8.2.The left side gets too much hot.i think its battery. its my clothes like jeans which keep me save otherwise, it would burn my skin! the heat up happens within 15-30 mins. i have istat and its telling me my fan exhaust is between 3k-4k.sometimes it even goes to 6.5k. I also have issue of battery. i read that after 10.8.2 update the battery isssue get solved but mine got worse. i get 3 to 3.5 hours tops. what is wrong. should i get it fixed because its just months old and being so much heat up n instead of 7 hrs i get 3 hrs.

    What programs are running?
This is the biggest factor in battery life and fan speed. For example, I have Safari open at the moment. If I open World of Warcraft my computer will do exactly what you have described and if I close it again it will go back to "normal".

  • Macbook pro 1.8 very hot

I have macbook pro 1.8. Snow Leopard.
While I'am charging battery and compiling the temperature gets very high. Especially on cpu. Whats weird the fans have ~3000rpm when temp on cpu is 100C and ~4200 when the temp is 120C.
After some time macbook usually shutdowns.
    Here are some screen shoots:

The worst thing is, that there isn't any log in /var/logs

That's not at a dangerous level, it will get warmer when gaming than say a  word doc or surfing. But electronic are stressed by heat, if you are concerned there are cooling trays, if you search the web I'm sure you'll find plenty. If you do a lot of gaming you might consider one. aaaaaleats use yourMBP on a hard flat surface not something soft for adaquate ventilation.

  • MacBook Pro is getting very slow after ~1h of using. It's not even getting hot!

    MacBook Pro 15'

    2 GHz Intel Core i7
    8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 3000 512  MB
+my battery is dead and Im using cable all the time
When I turn ON my Macbook everything is OK, but after ~1h of doing whatever (surfin on net, listetning iTunes or watching movies) it's suddenly getting super slow. After that even scrolling down the websites is lagging and watching movies from HDD is impossible (glitchy and low fps). Macbook is not getting hot at all. Normal restarting doesn't work - it's slow as it was before (I need to wait long time to turn in ON again). Yesterday I decided to restart the SMC (Control+Option+Shift+Power Button) and after restarting Macbook it was OK again for another 1h.
    I've already tried:
    - cleaning with Clean my Mac 2
    - scan with ClamXav
    - restarting SMC

I'm updating OS X right now (downloading).

  • 15" Macbook Pro Retina running very hot!

    Hi everyone,
I got my Macbook in November 2012.
I've noticed recently when I use applications which use the discrete graphics card (Geforce GT 650M), things like Logic Pro X, VLC Player or playing games like Civilization V, the temperatures reach 95 degrees celsius, according to the smc Fan Control app that I use to monitor temps.
I can lift the laptop off my desk, turn the air conditioning on in my room and point a desk fan at the laptop and temperatures still reach around 88 degrees C - and the laptop is hot enough to be uncomfortable to the touch. Heat is centered around the F6 and F7 buttons.
I know Macbooks are supposed to run hot and the case is designed to disappate heat, but it seems too hot to be safe.
If you guys could either put my mind to rest, or let me know if its worth a trip to the Genius Bar.
I'll probably be going anyway because of a problem with one of the thunderbolt ports (flickering image on external monitor and fails to recognise my audio interface) - so will probably raise the issue then anyway.
    Cheers!
    Josh

The types of applications that you describe and the temperatures that you report is actually 'normal'.  They are all CPU/GPU intensive applications that will stress the MBP processing resources thus creating a lot of heat.
Casual web browsing will result in much lower temperatures, probably in the mid 40°c to perhaps to about 60°c.  If not, then you do have a problem.
    Ciao.

  • My macbook pro is getting really hot when I leave it running but put the screen down.   When I open it only shows password box not rest of screensaver.  I'm not doing anything differently

The past 2 days my MacBook pro has been running really hot, especially when I close it.  When I open it the screensaver doesn't show completely.  Yesterday when I moved the mouse it made spiral trails with the graphics, very strange.  I'm really concerned!  Help... I've restarted it, powered it off last night, etc.

You can always take your Mac in and give it a check-up for free. What will cost you is the repairs you select to have preformed. I recommend shutting your Mac down before you go to bed. Problem solved. There is no need for you to keep it running if all applications are quit. Why do you need it on?

  • Macbook pro is getting really hot just got it in octuber 2012

I just got a MacBook Pro in Octuber 2012 and now after installing windows 7 with Boot Camp is getting really hot, can some body help me?
    thanks,

How hot is hot.  Download from the Internet 'Temperature Monitor' and install it.  When you get some readings, post them for an evaluation.
    Ciao.
