Horizontal scrollbar in combo box

hello all,
i m using a combobox component in my application,i want to
show a horizontal scroll bar in combox.how can i do this?
please help me .
thanks in advance

Actually, you're right it's not that simple. Looking back on
a project of mine which used this, fortunately there is a solution.
First, a ComboBox is a List and a Label component put
together. You can actually access the List component instance
inside the ComboBox through the
dropdown property. From there you can configure the list's
hScrollPolicy.
But there's a catch: when you set the
hScrollPolicy to
"on", the vScrollPolicy sets itself to
"auto. So you need to explicitly turn it off so you don't
get vertical scrollbars:

  • Combo box menu calculation of popup size ignores horizontal scrollbar

    I have a JComboBox that I've setMaximumRowCount(20). However, sometimes the combo box has as few as 2 or 3 items in it. In those cases as you probably know, Swing automatically calculates how tall the popup should be, in this case 2 rows tall.
    However, this calculation ignores the horizontal scrollbar, which basically occupies a "row" itself. This means that if I have combo box with 2 items, the displayed popup will contain the first item, a horizontal scrollbar, and a vertical scrollbar (for scrolling down to the item that the horizontal scrollbar hides) . Is this a bug in Java? If so, are there any workarounds to this?
    I've looked in the bug report section using the terms "combobox horizontal scrollbar popup" and couldn't find anything
    thanks

    the very simple strategy to do is to call removeAllItems() method for the 2nd combox box and then insert the contents. this is because the validate() method is not repeatedly called and so the contents are not updated immediately.

  • Combo box popup width adjusting no longer work in 1.0.6_26-b03

    Previously, I was able to adjusting combo box popup's width, by referring to the technique described in [http://tips4java.wordpress.com/2010/11/28/combo-box-popup/|http://tips4java.wordpress.com/2010/11/28/combo-box-popup/]. During that time, I was using 1.0.6_24-b07.
    However, after I update my Java runtime to 1.0.6_26-b03, things broke.

    I had came across another workaround as stated here.
    [http://www.jroller.com/santhosh/entry/make_jcombobox_popup_wide_enough|http://www.jroller.com/santhosh/entry/make_jcombobox_popup_wide_enough]
    The popup's is having enough width to show all items. However, it is not perfect still, as the width is little too much. I still can see some extra space at the tailing of the list.
    The workaround is as follow.
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.util.Vector;
    // got this workaround from the following bug:

  • Determine the best width for ListCellRenderer - Multi-column combo box

    Currently, I am having a multi column combo box. In order for the column to align properly during show popup, I use box layout to do so. However, the short coming for box layout is that, the size for each column is fixed. This makes me have a difficulty, when I have a long string to be displayed. The problem is shown through the following screen shoot.
    http://i.imgur.com/4Nfc6.png
    This is because in 2nd column,
    1) All the 3 rows must be in same size so that they are aligned.
    2) But 1st row and 2nd row cell renderer, do not know 3rd row is holding such a long string.
    The code (2 files) to demo this problem is as follow. Is there any way the size of the cell will be adjusted automatically? Yet, all the row will be aligned properly.

    Are these two lines intentionally or is it just a mismatch?
    jLabel2.setMaximumSize(new java.awt.Dimension(100, 14));
    jLabel2.setMinimumSize(new java.awt.Dimension(200, 14));
    2) But 1st row and 2nd row cell renderer, do not know 3rd row is holding such a long string.There is only one cell renderer for all rows, so no need for the rows to know each other.
    To calculate the exact maximum width of column two, you have to check each entry.
    If you can do this BEFORE creating the combo, you could do this in a loop similar to this pseudo code
    FontMetrics fm= jComboBox1.getFontMetrics(jComboBox1.getFont());
    foreach (column2String) {
      int length= fm.stringWidth(column2String);
      if (length>max) max= length;
    }Now you have a max value to dimension jLabel2 in your renderer.
    If you don't fill your combo in one go, but rather at runtime, you have to check at each
    jComboBox1.addItem(...)
    whether the string for label2 is extending the current max, redefine max, and repaint the combo.
    This second approach I haven't done so far, but that's how I would try.

  • How to Bind a Combo Box so that it retrieves and display content corresponding to the Id in a link table and populates itself with the data in the main table?

    I am developing a desktop application in Wpf using MVVM and Entity Frameworks. I have the following tables:
    1. Party (PartyId, Name)
    2. Case (CaseId, CaseNo)
    3. Petitioner (CaseId, PartyId) ............. Link Table
    I am completely new to .Net and to begin with I download Microsoft's sample application and
    following the pattern I have been successful in creating several tabs. The problem started only when I wanted to implement many-to-many relationship. The sample application has not covered the scenario where there can be a any-to-many relationship. However
    with the help of MSDN forum I came to know about a link table and managed to solve entity framework issues pertaining to many-to-many relationship. Here is the screenshot of my application to show you what I have achieved so far.
    And now the problem I want the forum to address is how to bind a combo box so that it retrieves Party.Name for the corresponding PartyId in the Link Table and also I want to populate it with Party.Name so that
    users can choose one from the dropdown list to add or edit the petitioner.

    Hello Barry,
    Thanks a lot for responding to my query. As I am completely new to .Net and following the pattern of Microsoft's Employee Tracker sample it seems difficult to clearly understand the concept and implement it in a scenario which is different than what is in
    the sample available at the link you supplied.

    Return New vmPetitioner(e)

    End Function
    End Class
    End Namespace
    And final the code behind of the view vPetitioner:
    <UserControl x:Class="CCIS.View.Case.vPetitioner"
    xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
    xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
    xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006"
    xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008"
    xmlns:vm="clr-namespace:CCIS.ViewModel.Case"
    mc:Ignorable="d"
    Width="300">
    <UserControl.Resources>
    <ResourceDictionary Source=".\CompactFormStyles.xaml" />
    </UserControl.Resources>
    <Grid>
    <Border Style="{StaticResource DetailBorder}">
    <Grid>
    <Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
    <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto" />
    <ColumnDefinition Width="*" />
    </Grid.ColumnDefinitions>
    <TextBlock Grid.Column="0" Text="Petitioner:" />
    <ComboBox Grid.Column="1" Width="240" SelectedValuePath="." SelectedItem="{Binding Path=tblParty}" ItemsSource="{Binding Path=PetitionerLookup}" DisplayMemberPath="fldName" />
    </Grid>
    </Border>
    </Grid>
    </UserControl>
    The problem, presumably, seems to be is that the binding path "PetitionerLookup" of the ItemSource of the Combo box in the view vPetitioner exists in a different ViewModel vmCase which serves as an ObservableCollection for MainViewModel. Therefore,
    what I need to Know is how to route the binding path if it exists in a different ViewModel?
    Sir, I look forward to your early reply bringing a workable solution to the problem I face.
    Warm Regards,
    Arun

  • Problem in refreshing the combo box on selection of an item in another comb

    I have a situation where values to be displayed in 2nd combo box depends on the selection of an item from the 1st combo box.
    Problem observed:
    The 2nd combo box is not getting refreshed if the selected item from the 1st combo box has mapping to more than 10 items.
    for ex:
    A - AA, AB, AC, AD, AE, AF
    B - BA, BB, BC, BD, BE, BF, BG, BH, BI, BJ, BK, BL, BM, BN, BO, BP
    C - CA, CB, CC
    D - DA, DB, DC, DD
    1st combo box list:
    A
    B
    C
    D
    2nd combo box list:
    If the value selected from the first combo box is A, C, or D then 2nd combo box refreshes with repective values. But when the value selected is B, then 2nd combo box is not getting refreshed with respective values.

    the very simple strategy to do is to call removeAllItems() method for the 2nd combox box and then insert the contents. this is because the validate() method is not repeatedly called and so the contents are not updated immediately.

  • How to modify a combo box for touch panel operation?

    Hi,
    I'm developping a touch panel controled application.
    The first step of the application is user log-in. My application has a small database of names that the user can access via the drop down menu of a combo box.
    My problem is that the arrows and the slider of the vertical scroll bar are way too small to be fingers-operated:
    Is there a way to modify the size of this scrollbar so that it's not too small for the operators' fingers?
    Best regards,
    peper

    Hello peper,
    As far as I know this is not directly possible (a least not with the control editor).
    If you want to, you could also create your own "adapted" control yourself through an XControl.
    This one can then (for example) combine a name input, a button and a listbox (with a big vertical scrollbar).
    Or is this too far fetched?
    Kind Regards,

  • Horizontal scroll in list box

    Hi,
    I have a list box as defined below.
    <select name="lstSelect" class="selectControl" style="WIDTH=220px" size="15">
    The width of the list box needs to be fixed and hence the style="WIDTH=220px" .
    Now if i get a text which is longer than this width then it gets truncated in the list.
    I would like to have a horizontal scrollbar in the list in such cases. Is this possible?
    Thanks in advance,
    Raghu

    I don't think there is any way of making a list box scroll horizontally. But you can have a look at this...

  • Horizontal scrollbar for JComboBox - Not workable under Mac

    By referring to this thread Re: Horizontal scrollbar for JComboBox across multiple look and feel I try to provide horizontal scroll bar for JComboBox to my clients.
    private void adjustScrollBar() {
        //if (this.getItemCount() == 0) return;
        Object comp = this.getUI().getAccessibleChild(this, 0);
        if (!(comp instanceof JPopupMenu)) {
            return;
        JPopupMenu popup = (JPopupMenu) comp;
        // Works fine under Windows and Ubuntu Linux
        // However, in OSX 10.6.4
        // javax.swing.Box$Filler cannot be cast to javax.swing.JScrollPane
        JScrollPane scrollPane = (JScrollPane) popup.getComponent(0);
        scrollPane.setHorizontalScrollBar(new JScrollBar(JScrollBar.HORIZONTAL));
        scrollPane.setHorizontalScrollBarPolicy(JScrollPane.HORIZONTAL_SCROLLBAR_AS_NEEDED);
    }The above code will cause ClassException under OSX 10.6.4. (Works fine for Windows and Linux)
    Any suggestion to resolve this problem. Sorry. I do not have a Mac machine. Hence, can't experiment out much with it.
    Thanks

    The following code works quite well for me.
        private void adjustScrollBar() {
            final int max_search = 8;
            // i < max_search is just a safe guard when getAccessibleChildrenCount
            // returns an arbitary large number. 8 is magic number
            JPopupMenu popup = null;
            for (int i = 0, count = this.getUI().getAccessibleChildrenCount(this); i < count && i < max_search; i++) {
                Object o = this.getUI().getAccessibleChild(this, i);
                if (o instanceof JPopupMenu) {
                    popup = (JPopupMenu)o;
                    break;
            if (popup == null) {
                return;
            JScrollPane scrollPane = null;
            for (int i = 0, count = popup.getComponentCount(); i < count && i < max_search; i++) {
                Component c = popup.getComponent(i);
                if (c instanceof JScrollPane) {
                    scrollPane = (JScrollPane)c;
                    break;
            if (scrollPane == null) {
                return;
            scrollPane.setHorizontalScrollBar(new JScrollBar(JScrollBar.HORIZONTAL));
            scrollPane.setHorizontalScrollBarPolicy(JScrollPane.HORIZONTAL_SCROLLBAR_AS_NEEDED);
        }

  • Long strings in combo box

    I have an editable combo box that I'm sticking in a compact spring layout. The problem is if you use a list that contains very long strings (like a long hex string), the combo box sizes itself to fit it and all the other controls are made to be that length as well. Is there a way to stop the control from becoming so long, like a horizontal scroll bar in the list?

  • Horizontal scrollbar in ListBox?

    Hi All
    I noticed that horizontal scrollbars don't appear in list boxes; I resized the list box to fit width of page but text is still cut off.
    There are no settings concerning scrollbars for list boxes.
    Please advise.

    From my knowledge, this is impossible with Adobe PDFs. The only way to insist the users to read the ToolTip.

  • Horizontal scrollbar mystery.

    In our application we use several interactive reports and we have an issue in some of them when using IE (horizontal scrollbar disappears).
    I have spent last few days trying to figure out what is the problem without any luck. Here are my discoveries:
    We use APEX - 4.1.0.00.32
    Theme used Scarlet - 21.
    As I said the problem only occurs in IE.
    I have tested it on Windows 7 and Windows XP.
    The problem doesn't exists if IE is set without proxy setting on (in the IE configuration proxy is off).
    When proxy is set up the horizontal bar disappears.
    What I have discovered is that if I turn off proxy, the compatibility view icon (in the address bar) is visible and the scrollbars are OK. However if I click the compatibility view Icon, the scrollbar desappears (this is in the non proxy settings in the IE).
    If I turn on proxy the compatibility icon is not visible anymore and the scrollbars are not there too.
    To make things more complicated the disappearing of scrollbars is random.
    Does anybody have any suggestions what to do next (I am running out of ideas)?
    Thanks in advance.

    Well, I am not sure if I have solved my problem but it has been clarified.
    The problem is with IE and the way it process intranet pages.
    In the IE setting we have a proxy configuration where we exclude our intranet pages. If the site is listed in the exclude box, IE uses its "logic" and processes it as compatible page with no option of turning it off.
    Because of this the scroll bars are turned off.
    The only solution is to modify the header created by apex (which I have not figure out how to do it).

  • How can I add horizontal scrollbars to pop-up windows?

    When I generate WebHelp, the pop-up windows that I created in the help have vertical scrollbars but no horizontal scrollbars. It hasn't been a problem for me, but another user told me that the pop-up boxes are running off the screen to the right and without the horizontal scroll bars, he can't read all of the text.

    Yes you can but you'd need to add some JavaScript to your topic. Either that or amend the code already there. You should be aware though that there maybe differences in how they operate in different browsers. You maybe better off trying to change the size of your popups or adjusting the content in them. You can set a popup to any size by using the Custom Sized Popup option when creating the link.

  • List item (combo box) issues...

    Hi,
    I have a form I'm creating that returns several records based on a query that the user may edit. I do not base these items on database values, but rather control the data within the form. I have created dynamic combo boxes for the return values (ie, they're only visible when valid values are returned to them). Basically, when I click on a combo box after the items have been populated, I want to populate the combo box, but exclude the values in the remaining combo boxes restraining the user from trying to specify the definition for a value type twice. I'm running into two problems. First, I use the when-mouse-click trigger on the combo box to populate the values, however, it seems it's automatically generating a scrollbar within the combo box, showing two arrows (which I don't want but can't seem to disable). Also if a user clicks on it twice, it's continuing to add values. I have used the clear_list function, but that seems to be causing other problems such as removing one value, but leaving another and after 2 clicks stops working. Has anyone done something similar or have an idea as to how I might get the functionality I want?
    Thank you.

    Can u try to attach a record group to the list item
    and you only populate record group with commands
    1. Create record group with 2 columns
    2. Populate the group
    FUNCTION POPULATE_GROUP
    (recordgroup_id RecordGroup);
    3.Populate list
    PROCEDURE POPULATE_LIST
    (list_id ITEM,
    recgrp_id RecordGroup);
    this way you will have better control.Hi,
    This actually worked great. Thank you!
    The only issue I'm still having is the initial when-mouse-click action is bringing up a scrollbar and minimizing what you can view to one value inside the existing list item, but allowing you to scroll through the list displaying one item at a time (within the list item). If I click twice, the scrollbar disappears, but you still can't see the full list. If I click three times, it starts functioning the way I want it to on the initial click by displaying all values as a combo box list with no scrollbar (all values visible). Is there a behavior I'm overlooking that will force it to behave this way from the initial mouse click?
    Thank you again!

  • How to populate data in the data table on combo box change event

    hi
    i am deepak .
    i am very new to JSF.
    my problem is i want to populate data in the datatable on the combo box change event.
    for example ---
    combo box has name of the city. when i will select a city
    the details of the city should populate in the datatable. and if i will select another city then the datatable should change accordingly..
    its urgent
    reply as soon as possible
    thanks in advance

    i am using Rational Application Developer to develop my application.
    i am using a combo box and i am assigning cityName from the SDO.
    and i am declaring a variable in the pageCode eg.
    private String cityName;
    public void setCityName(String cityName){
    this.cityName = cityName;
    public String getCityName(){
    return cityName;
    <h:selectOneMenu id="menu1" styleClass="selectOneMenu" value="#{pc_Test1.loginID}" valueChangeListener="#{pc_Test1.handleMenu1ValueChange}">
                        <f:selectItems
                             value="#{selectitems.pc_Test1.usercombo.LOGINID.LOGINID.toArray}" />
                   </h:selectOneMenu>
                   <hx:behavior event="onchange" target="menu1" behaviorAction="get"
                        targetAction="box1"></hx:behavior>
    and also i am declaring a requestParam type variable named city;
    and at the onChangeEvent i am writing the code
    public void handleMenu1ValueChange(ValueChangeEvent valueChangedEvent) {
    FacesContext context = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
    Map requestScope = ext.getApplication().createValueBinding("#{requestScope}").getValue(context);
    requestScope.put("login",(String)valueChangedEvent.getNewValue());
    and also i am creating another SDO which is used to populate data in datatable and in this SDO in the where clause i am using that requestParam .
    it is assigning value in the pageCode variable and in the requestParam but it is not populating the dataTable. i don't no why??
    it is possible that i may not clear at this point.
    please send me the way how my problem can be solved.
    thanks in advance
