HORM on a long term use machine

I'm currently attempting to utilize HORM for a machine that will be running for two to four weeks at a time. I have an image made with EWF (RAM Mode) enabled that has run for seventeen days without any issue. However, when I activate HORM the image crashes
after eight hours. The screen goes black and a reboot is required. After rebooting, the image resumes to my application in whichever state it crashed in, not the state I captured.
For example:
I captured the HORM state while my application was running in State one. I resumed to ensure the HORM state capture was successful and the machine resumed to State one (which is the correct behavior). I then proceeded to State two in my application and let
the machine run overnight. I came back in the morning to find the screen was black, which never happened when I ran the machine for seventeen days with EWF enabled and HORM disabled. I rebooted the machine and found that it had resumed to my application in
State two. My theory is the machine is running out of memory (it has 2 GB of RAM and 7 GB of hard drive space).
Is it possible to use HORM on a machine that will run for weeks at a time without a reboot?

The application can be the shell by using the Command Prompt Shell with Custom Shell Support package. Just replace the cmd.exe with an absolute path to your application. My book covers this:

Once your application is the shell you will not have access to the desktop. If you need access to things like Control Panel settings, you can either build in access via your shell. Another approach is to have a different shell launch your applications. For

Using Ipod shuffle in museum: long-term use?

Hello.
I am a museum curator and am doing an exhibit with oral histories. I am considering using the ipod shuffle to play the audio for this exhibit.
The shuffles would be plugged into a wall adapter, such as the apple USB Power Adapter M9837LL/A, and would run continously for two months. It would be possible to turn them off at night, but inconvient, as the shuffles would be hidden throughout the exhibit.
My question is: can the shuffle be left plugged into the wall adapter for two months, and if so, can it play continously for this long?
Has anyone tried this?

It seems like it does .... I just uploaded a single 45 minute Podcast and listened to it all the way through. That's all I pot onto the iPS. Anyway, when it got to the end it just rolled back to the beginning and is playing again ....

White background or Black background suited for long term watching ?

Hello,
I saw many desktop themes with white or light grey background a few years ago, but now, many of them turn into black background with white or blue or cyan or others color of fonts.
As a programmer, I am just curious about the theme: which type is suited for long term use of computer?
I have tried both, and found grey background is easy to read because it is similiar to read on paper, but it looks like a lighting-bulb!; black background with blue font is cool, along with less luminosity, seems free my eyes.
But another problem is the color choosing. With light grey background, it seems any color is right. But with black background, colors should be carefully selected, since some colors are not suit black background at all.
Grayscale is another one. With light grey background, I can easily tune my font in grayscale, like Japanese cartoon paper (I like it very much!), gracifully to distinct keywords. But with black background, it is ugly to use grayscale to distinct keywords.
How about your ideas?

I commented out the external logo calls (since the new logo area fits really nicely with this style), The sections I commented out can probably be removed safely, and I made the textbox post area more readable. Now I love the new webpage layout!

Drive no longer being used by time machine: delete some files?

Tried unlocking and allowing myself to read and write. Nope. Tried holding down the option key. Nope.
This drive is no longer being used by time machine and I want to delete some files on it.
Is there a way to do it without wiping the entire drive?

That's a problem (as you've discovered). Time Machine works best if it has it's own, exclusive partition. See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #3 for details.

That will let you delete individual backups, or all backups of selected items.
If you don't have room to copy the "other" stuff elsewhere while you erase the disk, you can delete the Backups.backupdb folder. Emptying the trash will take a very long time, and may give you permissions and/or locked file problems. If so, see #E6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Using flash drives for long-term backups

I use a USB flash drive to backup my mom's iPhoto Library. I've heard, however, that flash drives are not reliable for long-term backups. Is this true? If so, what is the best alternative?

yes, I'm not a fan of DVD-Rs either. they do go bad pretty quickly (especially cheap ones) - quicker than flash drives in my experience. Personally, i only use regular external drives (and lately cloud storage) for backups.

Using "Deleted Items" folder for long term storage.

I have a user that is using the "Deleted Items" folder in Outlook for long-term storage. He has unchecked the box in the options which would remove the items in the Deleted Items folder at shutdown
and is having problems with his Outlook freezing up several times a day. He was using a Microsoft Surface as his primary computer and has since changed to a Dell Latitude, but Outlook still freezes up. He has an Office 365 Pro Plus license.
I have been looking for articles to explain all the reasons for not using "Deleted Items" for storage, but in order to get him to change, This is not a .pst, it is the Outlook default “Deleted Items”.
. I really need some "ammunition" to let him know the consequences of keep that much mail in Deleted Items.
Could you tell me when Outlook starts, does it enumerate the Deleted Items folder as it does the Inbox?

I have to agree with Robert's point here. The question of whether or not the user should be doing this answers itself: of course he shouldn't. On a lighter note there's a Dilbert cartoon from 2003 which covers this very point:

I'd suggest you ask him to create a sub-folder of his inbox and get him to move everything over, then he still has his history and can use deleted items the way it was intended.
The question I would ask is are you sure that this has any bearing on his Outlook freezing issue? I have encountered people who never empty their recycle bin and I have encountered issues with Outlook freezing, but I don't recall ever having the two together.
If you still have issues after he's moved everything then it's a general Outlook freezing issue, so you have to look at those sort of things. For a start, is it bang up to date with Microsoft Updates? If so how big is his mailbox? Presumably he has an ost
file, so how big and fragmented is that? I'd probably try creating a new Outlook profile. If not then what add-ins does he have, could they all be disabled for a while to see if it's one of them, then add them back one at a time? If not is it worth running
a repair in Office? I've had that fix a fair few issues.
Just a few thoughts. I don't know if any of them will help.

Use Reorder Point Planning and see VSE Requirements in Long Term Planning

I would like to use reorder point planning short term and something similar to MRP planning long term. I am trying to drive actual production off of consumption and plan long term for capacity, inventory and BOM components. Our plan is to delete the near term forecast and leave the long term forecast in to show requirements for LTP.
I'm configured for Reorder Point Planning as follows:
MRP type V1, Reorder Point Planning with External Requirements
Planning Strategy 52
HB Max Stock Level
For the longer term forecast requirements I'm configured with:
Independent Requirement Type VSE, Planning without final assembly. This is creating non convertible planned order independent requirements.
The reorder point planning is executing perfectly, but how do I get the VSE planned order independent requirements to show up in long term capacity and inventory planning? What am I missing? Is it something with MRP type, am I missing an option in the long term planning setup?
This has been a tough issue and I would greatly appreciate any advice on this.

check the planning scenario in MS31 and the PIR assignment in MS31 also check the plant assignement.
Check In MD61 you have enter PIRs in simulation version and the same version is to assigned in planning scenario
Also check T code OPU5 for LTP setting for planned orders

What are the main causes of slowdown (long term)?

I've had my MacBook for about 3½ years now, and it's starting to slow down. (Hardware specs are in sig.)
Yup, I know it's normal. It's happened with every computer I've owned, regardless of platform.
*_WHAT I CURRENTLY DO ABOUT IT_*
I routinely run Maintenance (http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs2/english/maintenance.html), a free app that—yep, you guessed it!—performs maintenance on your Mac. It uses a mix of maintenance scripts that are built-in to OS X (OS X runs them silently, but this allows them to be run on demand), and some of its own methods for cleaning a Mac to keep it running smoothly.
I've found that Maintenance does help—I definitely recommend it!—but the older my MacBook has become, it seems the less Maintenance can do to mitigate the slowdown that comes with age.

I don't think it's because the hardware is old by today's standards, because in my experience if you reformat any machine it will operate significantly faster, even after restoring all of the software that was removed by the format.
I've become increasingly suspicious about the hard drive's free space's effect on a system's performance. I've always known that it has a noticeable effect—less swap space for virtual memory—but I'm beginning to wonder if the effect of a mostly-full hard drive is much more than I have previously imagined. Just a feeling.

If they can be fixed by a backup-reformat-restore, then I take it they are software (filesystem) based problems. If so, why can't software solve the problem without a reformat?
Disk utility can and does repair permissions and basic disk errors. However it does not rebuild directory data.
• How exactly do directory structure errors happen, and what other consequences do they have (if any)?

I think this is your main issue. Try moving your itunes and movie to an external drive then see how your mac performs.
Also a good way to reclaim some space is to delete all the language localisations you dont use. It is amazing that iWeb alone can install a few 100megs of foreign language templates that you will never use.
I used to use Mike Bombich's delocalizer to do this but that app is not longer available so I use monolingual now.
edit, as you have macbook you are lucky in that it is really straightforward to install a bigger internal hard drive.
You can now get 5000GB 2.5 inch sata hard drives. You could take out the old drive hook that up to a usb to sata cable, install a bigger hard drive. then connnect the usb cable to your mac. Then boot from your Leopard Disk then use disk utility clone your old drive onto your new drive.

Long term support

first let me say that I like ArchLinux. I like the packet management, the understandable boot scripts and so on. It is one of the leanest distros around. And I understand the concept of "rolling release" (at least I hope so ;-)).
I tried to use ArchLinux for our industrial PCs. Unfortunately we cannot keep all of these machine at the bleeding edge of releases. We need some "stability" also known as "long term support".
For example we have installed ArchLinux 2009.08 on some machines, but when we want to install additional packages now, the repos doesn't have the necessary package versions available. For a "rolling release" that's fine.
So I'm wondering how I could get this "stability" with ArchLinux? Maybe ArchLinux is wrong for this requirements? Maybe I have to maintain my own repo (which I would do just to get the benefits of ArchLlinux packet management)?

FYI 2009.08 is an installer version, not an Arch version. As you noted, Arch uses a rolling release system, so the date given to the installer quickly becomes irrelevant once the system is in use.

Those of use who use Arch as it should be used would disagree with that - the necessary package versions are the ones that are installed when you execute pacman -Syu.
All of which is another way of saying that Arch is not a good fit for the requirements you described above.

Been using windows too long, getting use to mac again

I have graduated high school, went to get a new mac, I haven't used a mac for many years. I'm following my high school major for video production. I wanna know if I should work on my video editing on a mac since I use my windows computer to make the videos. I use hypercam 3 OR camstudio for screen recordings on my videos. I mostly make World of Warcraft videos and like I said, I haven't used a mac in years, so if anyone can, help me out please. I'm still using my HP Pavilion, Windows 7, g6t-2000 Notebook PC 64-bit for my recording and gonna use my MacBook Pro with Retina display, Mac OS X (10.7.1), Video Production for my video editing and posting.

Apple has been moving away more away from the professional use market for their machines and focusing more on the consumer market for smaller devices.
The MacPro has been pulled from Europe and hasn't seen a upgrade in ages which has caused many video pros to move to Avid on Windows 7 towers instead

Also Apple has now moved to a annual OS X release cycle, which wrecks even more havoc on established workflows as developers of Mac software now have to maintain so many different versions for each OS X version. Whereas on Windows 7, it's supported as is until 2020, (Windows versions usually last a decade on average)
Also like 3D gamers, the Windows towers are more configurable with more hardware options, not so on the Mac where you cant' harldy find video card upgrades anywhere.
Apple also has been sealing up their hardware more, the Retina is non-user serviceable , not upgrade-able, so your stuck with the RAM and storage that came with the machine.
So ideally the Mac isn't as good as a long term professional choice for video anymore, however a laptop isn't ideal for doing video production anyway due to it's limited cooling and processors, due to battery capability and thin design.
The Mac can be used on the road of course, but the main workhorse will be the office/home tower and better longterm value and the future is Avid on Windows now unfortunatly.
It seems you already have the MacBook Pro, so your stuck with it but you can install Windows 7 in bootcamp and thus use Avid there to some degree and also enjoy OS X for personal use.
Better hurry to get a Windows 7 Pro disk/license, Microsoft is bent on Windows 8 confusion.

The most cost-effective long-term solution, Upgrade or Buy Newer Computer?

I am looking for the most cost-effective long term solution for me as an self-employed interior designer. I need help making a decision: Is it reasonable to upgrade my iBook G4 (RAM, operating system)(+bigger hard drive)(+buy new rechargeable battery)(+buy new portable power adapter)?; or do I need to abandon it and buy a newer apple computer (0-2 years old)?

I think that decision would depend on how you plan to use this laptop. In addition it would depend on your client base and the image you need to project.
I used to be a commercial producer. If I was still doing that today I'd need to project a successful up to date image. My clients at the large agencies were/are attracted to the latest technologies. I would have the hippest iPhone apps and probably a 15" Unibody MacBook Pro.
I have a pro photographer client who wanted to buy an iMac a few years back but I insisted she buy a Mac Pro with at least two of the largest Cinema Monitors she could afford.
She has thanked me multiple times since she says her clients are so impressed with her images when she displays them on those large monitors.
So it would depend on how you're using the laptop and your client base.
The first thing I see with your iBook is that your RAM is pretty minimal. If you update that would be the first thing to do.
This is actually the iBook that I use and for me it's very cost effective. They're both 1.2 GHz machines. I use a 14" around the house and a !2" when we're traveling. It is very cost effective for me as I purchased them broken for under $125 total. I use salvaged drives and RAM. It works for me since my business is repair and the clients are impressed how well my 5 year old iBook works.

MBP vs MBP Retina for long term value?

I'm looking to upgrade from my current MBP to a higher performing one. I bought my current mid-2011 13" for basic use, word processing, internet, etc. I now work at an internet marketing and design agency though and it's not performing well enough for my needs.
I run a fair number of programs (evernote, skype, ical, excel, word, itunes, firefox, and chrome with a bunch of tabs open at once) at the same time and my RAM (currently 4gb) is always maxed out right now. My current computer also won't handle photoshop, which I need to be able to use (not all day, everyday, but I do need to be able to use it). I'd like to be able to run Boot Camp or Parallels as well.
I spent a few hours today researching and got it down to roughly 2 options. My main issue between the two is long term value, which one will work the longest/be worth the most in 3-4 years when I want to upgrade.
Option 1. Buy a 15" MBP 2.6ghz Retina with 16GM Ram upgrade. I know this is more than enough for my needs, I would mainly be buying this with the hope it would last a long time and so be worth it. My main problem with the Retina is the inability to upgrade so I feel like I have to make sure I get everything on the front end. (Cost $3k)
Option 2. Buy a standard 15" MBP knowing that I could upgrade to a SSD and add more RAM when I need it. My thinking is that RAM and SSDs are only going to get cheaper so why not just hold out for if/when I need it.
So which option do you think I should choose? If I go with option 2, is it worth it to upgrade to the 2.6ghz processor? I would get the 8gb RAM either way so it would effectively be a $300 upgrade.

If I were you I would go for MBP with retina display. And if the price matters for you you can get the base model with 2.3ghz + 16G RAM. This one works like the 2.6ghz for you and you and I couldn't see the differences on our regular daily usage. With the money that you can save you can buy an external HD with thunderbolt support (7200rpm or even go for RAID). Probably after few years it would be no difference between 2.3ghz and 2.6ghz and both of them will be old and no one cares about 0.3ghz more or less. The only problem is in storage (which software are getting bigger every day) which I heard you can upgrade the MBPr storage in the future.
Upgradeable it's just a term. What you want to upgrade after 3-4 years in standard MBP? Let me see there is only two things for upgrade storage and memory. Not CPU nor Graphic card or anything else. I heard they can change the storage on MBPr not at the moment but maybe in future. For the RAM part I see a lot of people want to buy 8G RAM not even 16G because 8G is clearly enough for few years. But you can go with the 16G and make sure you can have a high end machine for years. (But honestly, most of the people go with the new machines after few years and they don't upgrade that much.)
So non-upgradeable is not an issue in MBPr for a lot of people except some people. The only thing you should be worried about is being repairable (1/10 score from iFixit) which you can buy AppleCare with the money you saved (from 2.6ghz to 2.3ghz) and be happy at least for 3 years.
