Hostnames with local web development environment

I'm running the latest version of OS X Server 2.0.23 on Mountain Lion 10.8.2, and am trying to get set up to use X Server as a local web development environment.
When I went through the steps of installing X Server, I used the hostname "jb.local". By enabling the websites feature, and pointing my browser to jb.local, I was able to see the default welcome page, and thought everything was going well. However, I can't figure out how to add additional hosts to this domain (i.e. drupal.local, or wordpress.local) without modifying my hosts file.
Do I now need to setup DNS in the server and set my Mountain Lion client to use it or something, or is there some better way that I'm missing?

When I was installing Server, it guessed the .local extension, (which we are using as the name of our local subnet) but not the whole hostname "jb.local". I added that myself. This machine is not registered as "jb.local" anywhere in our internal DNS.
This confuses me because pinging jb.local correctly resolves to the internal IP address of this machine on our network. So how is this resolving? There is no entry for this in my hosts file, and our internal DNS has no record of the hostname "jb.local".
This hostname was invented during the installation of the Server app, so there must be some communication between this machine, and the server app, that is resolving this hostname correctly, but I can't find anything on it.

WLC 2100 guest access with local web authentification

Hello I tried to create a guest acces with local web authentification.

I clicked on page source and deleted nodes with the web developer and the deletion has become permanent. Ebay won't load pictures. How to fix?

The problem is on my desktop and my laptop. I got a bit click happy on my desktop computer and hit the Web Developer button. I was trying to delete a really annoying flash ad on the side of the screen. I think I got into page source and deleted the node. I'm truly not sure what happened, but pictures stopped loading for ebay and everything is a worded list down the side of the page. I have deleted cache and cookies. I have reset mozilla. I have uninstalled and reinstalled mozilla. Laptop was not immediately affected, but now having the same problem.

This is a very strange issue.<br>
No changes made with the web developer tool will save and should be cleared when the page is reloaded.
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Use SQL Azure with local web app?

Hello all-
I have a web app running on a local-ish (our Data Center) server which runs ColdFusion and SQL Server on the same physical hardware. The load for the app is not too great, so running both services on the same box is not problem.
I need to upgrade SQL Server, and I would prefer not to put more resources onto our local servers if possible. Essentially, I would like to move to the cloud. BUT at this point I don't want to move my code to the cloud due to file storage and
a few other issues.
Is it feasible to use SQL Azure as my datasource for my local web app? I am at a top-tier University on the west coast, and our connection speeds are about as good as you can possibly get.
I don't mind a minor slowdown. For instance, if the round-trip takes 30 milliseconds, I won't be sweating that. But I'd rather not have a relatively snappy app turn into something agonizing for users.
Also, we have a perimeter firewall on campus which normally blocks all SQL Server traffic. Is it possible to change the port that SQL Azure uses?
Any guidance would be appreciated.

cost 13.35 per day. It is very cheap. Incoming traffic is free.

Local Web Development Using Spare Mac to View

Hum, hope I can be clear.... my mission: use old laptop (Tiger) to view web sites in the User/Sites folder on my new laptop (Snow Leopard) via web sharing. Why? Well, it's another screen, it's there and importantly, it represents the majority of visitors to sites. Roughly 50% of visitors are using screens of 1024 - 1280 width. My new hi-res mac represents about 5% of visitors. This seems pretty consistent across all the sites.
Anyhow, I have the hosts and httpd.conf files set up to serve multiple sites using NameVirtualHost *:80 and the <virtualhost> directive. (On my new laptop). So.. I can type into the address bar in Safari et al (new laptop) "http://mySiteWhatever/".
What I've achieved is: (old laptop) typing in Safari et al "http://newMacID.local/" or "http://newMacIPAddress/" displays the first site in the virtualhosts list.
What I've no idea how get to view the other sites in the list.
Some pointers would be really helpful and appreciated - I'm more than happy to put in the time figuring out for myself. As things stand, I've no idea what direction to go in even.

Anyway... apologies for taking a while to add anything, I have been reading them as they've come through. I've hung back because I'm battling with my own ignorance on this topic and want to be able to add sensible statements here... and try things out.
Roger... all the sites are dynamic (use a database, php for example) so I'm afraid the 'simple' approach of inputting file://... into the browser doesn't work. I need to 'parse' the sites as though they are on a web server. Thank you all the same, for html only sites it's the way to go.

I had try of MAMP and while I know lot's of people use it, I came to the conclusion myself personally that I should persevere with setting up the Tiger laptop Apache to operate as it should, and I'm glad I did, Proved useful experience to have under my belt. Just my own personal viewpoint. Of course with Snow Leopard Apache's all sorted out-of-the-box which is really cool. Thank you for taking the time to offer a suggestion, not a wrong one.
Hans... thank you for your pointers. Brilliant. Sorted me out. Bloomin marvelous. It was the second paragraph connected with a half formed instinct I had that the second (old) mac was needing extra info somehow somewhere.
So... for everyone who's shown interest ->
New mac serving web sites from the built in Apache as proper web sites, dynamic, database driven, whatever. Type in to browser "http://sitenamewhatever.ifyoulike" and you'd think it was 'out there' on the web. (Anyone wanting to sort the same situ should look at the Apache link Hans provided, all a bit technical, but worth persevering with. I use Smultron text editor for editing hidden files rather than terminal).
Old/second mac needed the ip address for the new mac writing into it's Apache host.conf file. The ip address needs to be the network ip not the standard mac ip. Now, I can type in "http://sitenamewhatever.ifyoulike" in a browser on the old (second) mac and voila! Awesomely useful.
What I don't know is what (router, mac itself) is identifying the network ip and therefore when/if it might change... I do know it's not dynamic in so far as it booted up today with the same ip.
Bit of a long post, but hopefully a helpful one.

Edit: Just a note - When I said "as proper web sites" I mean the websites are all behind the firewall, 'local' only. Viewable by me and my macs only – a 'private internet'. Of course there are copies out on the internet, on web servers - 'remote' copies viewable by everyone.

I was trying to remove all the "Recommended Pages" etc. garbage on the right-hand side of Facebook and got a little click happy with 'delete nodes' using the Web Dev tools - as cathartic as it was! :)
Now it seems as though I have broken FB on Firefox (seems to work fine on IE, surprisingly) as pics seem to be missing and the left-hand menu as well - but, of course the stuff I was trying to rid myself of comes back just fine ... sigh.
I've read that all changes are supposed to be temporary until you restart the browser but this hasn't helped at all and I did try unchecking the 'Use hardware acceleration when available' that I read somewhere else, to no avail.
Any assistance that can be rendered would be very much appreciated.
For the record, I've learned my lesson and won't futz around with this anymore! :)

For a node deletion in the Inspector tool,revert that by reloading the page. If that isn't working for you, you could try Command+Shift+r to reload the page bypassing the cache.
You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox Profile Folder that store session data.
Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

Synchronize with local development environment

Hello,
I'm not familiar with ABAP development and therefore I'm not well schooled in utilizing SAP/Netweaver development environment/infrastructure.
I want edit in my local editor/development environment html/css files, which I had generated with the its mobile template generator.
How could I access and update source files from within an local editor. Eclipse, Java & Co is my world. So I could not acquire a taste for SE80. I would like work local on my favorite editor and sync the source files with the ones on the server.
I installed yesterday the SAP NW Developer Studio. And I found a program BSP_UPDATE_MIMEREPOS.
But I dont know which way is it the best for my purpose.
Can you give me some advise how do you edit your its mobile template files - Tools - Sync with local files?

Visual Web Developer 2010 Express and Oracle ODAC - Oracle data provider

Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010 Express and Oracle ODAC112021.
I can't seem to get the ODAC to work correctly with the Web Developer Express. When putting in a gridview I only see the standard adapters. The one from Oracle does not appear. I have spent days trying to figure out why but no luck. No one else seems to have this problem. I do not see any errors when I installed the ODAC. I've followed a few tutorials.

I tried using the Windows adapters but they just don't seem to work. I can get results in the query builder but when I go to the next step in the wizard I get the constraints error. I've done all the research on that with no luck so I wanted to use the ODAC. This killing me! This really shouldn't be that hard. I've added the dll to the references but again it's just not an option. If anyone could give me a little direction that would be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Friends,
Installing SP1 and updates to it solved the first issue. So the database now seems to be of type 2008 R2.
Deleting some files solved the second issue.
However, another issue remains.
My most important projects were created with a version of VWDX 2010 that was downloaded from Microsoft and installed on July 3, 2012. This version of VWDX has now been lost, because my hard drive recently ceased to function and had to be replaced.
On the new hard drive I have a version of VWDX 2010 that was downloaded yesterday (May 28, 2014). As indicated above, I also installed SP1 and related updates.
When I load a project that was created in the version of VWDX 2010 that was installed almost two years ago and try to open the database connection, I get, in essence, the following error message:
"The database C:\Users\...\Database.mdf cannot be opened, because it is version 661. This server supports version 655 and earlier. A downgrade path is not supported."
So it seems that the original database version was 661, whereas the version downloaded yesterday is 655. It seems very strange that a version downloaded now should be earlier than a version downloaded two years ago. Does anyone have an explanation or a solution?

Setting up Oracle DB 11G in a development environment

Hi
I need to setup a new development environment with Oracle Database 11g and Oracle Apps Server 10G Forms and Reports.
Currently we are running a live system (using Microsoft Virtual PC) on a domain and the virtual servers are joined to the domain.
Where I want to get to with the new development environment is to be able to eventually move these new virtual servers to a completely new domain.
What would be the best way to set this up to minimize the amount of work when setting up the database and apps server with the assumption that I will want to migrate the virtual servers to a new domain in the future. Would it be better to set up a basic workgroup and do the installation of both virtual servers in a workgroup environment?
Also besides having security enhancements is there any advantage of having Oracle installed on a server versus installing on a Windows XP box?

İf you first try to create db you get above errors, then you select "Create new objects in schema" option drop&create process starts.
Result :
TESTTYPEıD_TRG, CUSTOMOPTıONıD_TRG , ıSSUEVERSİONTYPEıD_TRG triggers are dropped and but not created again. ETESTPAGEID_TRG, TESTCASEATTACHMENTID_TRG, ATTCHSTDATA_TRG are newly created instead
As I mentioned above after creation of ATTCHSTDATA_TRG, it throws an error and process stop. In additon, due to this error, all the dropped views are not created again.
All my problem is newly created triggers an couldnt created views I suppose.

Interacting with my development environment

The basics of Java programming I understand. I've created the first phase of a large intranet app using JSPs, EJBs, etc. But now I need to create an automated daemon to spit out large batches of Excel files, the data for which is (or will be) stored in an Oracle database.
I've gotten to the point where I've discovered Apache Jakarta POI, an API which would probably help meet my objectives.
The problem: I don't know where to begin importing these jar files into my environment. Mostly because it isn't MY environment. I sit at my computer and go through the company network to reach the development box, which is running JRun. I have absolutely no understanding of where to put files, what files these files are, and what changes I need to make to be able to import whatever classes/packages I will end up needing.
Furthermore, there is no particular person at my company who can answer these questions for me, at least not w/out submitting a formal request for help, waiting until their next project meeting, and then another three+ weeks to get assigned to a web developer downstairs. This project is "due" in about a week and a half.
Can someone recommend a tutorial, book, alternate message board, ANYTHING to get me started -- preferably in plain English because I tend to zone out when reading long technical descriptions with excessive acronyms (I was a terrible student...)

I would suggest two things
1 - get along with developing it locally, and worry about deploying it later
2 - shake a tree further up and say if they want it next week, then you will need some answers this week. Document your questions in an email/formal request, and leave it to someone else

What are you using for scheduling?
Is it running on the JRun server?
How do you trigger its startup/shutdown?
This will affect how the classpath is defined. If it is deployed inside JRUN, there is one definition of classpath, if it is independant, then you can have another.
If you are executing the daemon process from a command line/batch file evoking "java", then you have full control over the classpath settings, and can include any jars you want.
Adding libraries to the JRUN (as with any J2EE server) is relatively easy
- drop the jar files into the WEB-INF/lib directory of your web app.
- restart the server.

Setting up development environment with several projects

We struggle with Workshop when having a large workshop application. One way of getting out of this issue was to use several deployments and to use WSRP as a mechanism to get resources from several deployed portlet applications. Performance isn't an issue for our deployment.
This setup might help us with having smaller Workshop applications and making the development environment more efficient, but we see some issues with this.
- Framework package
How should we handle the framework part with CSS files. Duplicating these framework files is not a good solution since some developers most certainly will forget to update all framework files when editing them.
- Portal Administration
Can we just drop the portal administration web app in the most of the workshop application?
- Data project
We use a custom UUP. How should this be handled when splitting the workshop application into several smaller applications?

I used this for a little different purpose; we wanted to generate the whole development environment at one mouse click (formsweb.cfg, reports server etc.); as we used ANT for creating the svn local working copy for each developer we used ANT for this. but you can also use perl or bash :D.
I'd create one template, then loop through all directorys and append the configs to a temp file
/var
/you
/not_you=> create one config section named as the folder in the temp file basing on your template.
in your real formsweb.cfg you might append a line like
# THE DEVELOPER CONFIGS STARTS HERE
after that you locate your config-entries.
when the temp formsweb.cfg is ready, simply delete everything after
# THE DEVELOPER CONFIGS STARTS HERE
and append the configs from the temp file.
That's the way I'd do this ;)
