How best to improve graphics performance on RDS host servers??

We have a small RDS farm running on Windows Server 2012 R2.
All the RDS hosts and related servers are virtual servers running on vSphere 5.5 (hardware version 8 if that makes any difference).
I've seen various articles about configuring RemoteFX in Group Policy, but they are confusing.
I'm not asking about improving things like watching YouTube videos etc., I'm asking about improving graphics in general, like screen redraws and displaying mouse movements, keystrokes, etc.
What are the best things to do to improve these things within an RDS farm??
I will try increasing the video RAM within the host servers' VM settings but this is a guess, and these hosts are logged into by multiple users over VPN connections...
Thank you, Tom

This is what I'm talking about wrt MTU on the central SonicWall:
http://carltonit.wordpress.com/2013/08/09/how-to-optimize-bandwidth-on-sonicwall-nsa-2400/ -- see the ping command for figuring out the best MTU, then configure it on the WAN interface, advanced settings
http://www.firewalls.com/blog/sonicwall-throughput/
Can change MTU on central SonicWall, it's already been configured in the SonicWall 3500 in my building (1468) but I can't change all the other places (3 other agencies) that touch the central servers, they all use different ISPs and firewalls and routers
etc.
However knowing about MTU is a good thing.
Checking network usage etc. -- I'm usually not with the person(s) when they say things are "slow," I usually find out 'after the fact' or through someone else, sigh...
I'll work on MTU over the weekend...
Thank you, Tom

  • How can I Improve the Performance using Global Temo Tables ??

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me , How can i make use of Global Temporary Tables to improve the Performance.
I have few sample scripts ,
Say i have the View based on some Complex query like ,
CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW Profile_values_view AS
    SELECT d.Profile_option_name, d.Profile_option_id, Profile_option_value,
    u.User_name, Level_id, Level_code
    FROM Profile_definitions d, Profile_values v, Profile_users u
    WHERE d.Profile_option_id = v.Profile_option_id
    AND ((Level_code = 'USER' AND Level_id = U.User_id) OR
    (Level_code = 'DEPARTMENT' AND Level_id = U.Department_id) OR
    (Level_code = 'SITE'))
AND NOT EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM PROFILE_VALUES P
    WHERE P.PROFILE_OPTION_ID = V.PROFILE_OPTION_ID
    AND ((Level_code = 'USER' AND
    level_id = u.User_id) OR
    (Level_code = 'DEPARTMENT' AND
    level_id = u.Department_id) OR
    (Level_code = 'SITE'))
    AND INSTR('USERDEPARTMENTSITE', v.Level_code) >
    INSTR('USERDEPARTMENTSITE', p.Level_code));
Now i have created the Global temp Table as ,
    CREATE GLOBAL TEMPORARY TABLE Profile_values_temp
    Profile_option_name VARCHAR(60) NOT NULL,
    Profile_option_id NUMBER(4) NOT NULL,
    Profile_option_value VARCHAR2(20) NOT NULL,
    Level_code VARCHAR2(10) ,
    Level_id NUMBER(4) ,
    CONSTRAINT Profile_values_temp_pk
    PRIMARY KEY (Profile_option_id)
    ) ON COMMIT PRESERVE ROWS ORGANIZATION INDEX;
Now I am Inserting the Records into Temp table as
    INSERT INTO Profile_values_temp
    (Profile_option_name, Profile_option_id, Profile_option_value,
    Level_code, Level_id)
    SELECT Profile_option_name, Profile_option_id, Profile_option_value,
    Level_code, Level_id
    FROM Profile_values_view;
    COMMIT;
Now what my doubt is, when do i need to execute the Insert Statement.
Say , if the View returns few millions of records , then loading such a data into Global Temporary table takes lot of time.
Then what is the use of Global Temporary tables and how can i improve the Performance using the same.
    Raj

    Thanks for the responce ,
There are 2 to 3 complex views in our database, and there always be more than 5000+ users will be workinf on the application and is OLTP application. Those complex views are killing the application performance.
I what i felt was, if i create the Global Temporary tables for thow views and will be able to load the one third million of records returned by the views in to cache and can improve the application performance.
I have created the Global Temporary tables for 2 views with the option On Commit Preserve , But after am inserting the records into the Temp table and when i Issue the commit statement, the Temp table is getting Cleared.
I really got surpised of this behaviour as i know that with the Option On Commit Preserve , the rows should retain in the Temp Table, Instead , it's getting cleared.
Pelase suggest , what to do ??

  • How can I improve the performance of my app?

    Hi,
I have written an java application. This app makes a large number of calls on a method getting a value from an array. Because the app makes so many calls to this method the app isnt running as fast as it should!!! It will run faster if you get it to do less work, if it is doing only the work it should do then that is how fast it is.

  • Improving graphics performance in DIAdem 11.0 Report?

    Dear Forum,
when working on a Report layout, the poor graphic performance of DIAdem is a real problem for me.
For example, many diagrams with lots of data are on one page. One opens the proficiencies of one of the diagrams and changes e.g. the curves color or whatever and closes the dialog window. After this, the whole Report page is refreshed - wich takes up to one minute, depending on the amount of data displayed.
The strange thing is, when I close the given dialog window, and while the report page is being refreshed sent DIAdem to the taskbar and open any other application window, the process of refreshing the screen takes only 1 second instead of 30 seconds.
The question is: Is there a tweak to improve the speed how DIAdem refreshes the report page? Or is there any workaround other than switching applications during refreshing?
    Thanks a lot.
    Greetings from Germany
    Oliver

    Hello Oliver,
The easiest way to speed up the graphics performance in Report with large data files (or 3D graphs with lots of nodes) is to turn off the "Data Layer" (German: "Datenebene") in the "View" menu (German: "Ansicht").
That function basically turns off the display of all data in Report, but retains the axis systems, texts, etc., so you can still move them, place them and edit them without having to guess sizes. Once you're done with the report, simply turn the data layer back on and you're ready to create a PDF, print or save the result as an image file (JPG, BMB, etc.).
I think the performance difference you described (1 vs. 30 seconds) is due to the fact that once DIAdem has drawn a page, it retains an image in memory and will simply draw that image when you bring DIAdem to the foreground (or maximize it). After any edits you make to the report (e.g. change the color of a graph), DIAdem redraws the complete page from scratch, which takes much longer then just re-displaying an image that has already been drawn previously. Someone from the DIAdem R&D team could probably do a better job explaining this, but I think this is the explanation for the time difference in drawing.
Anyway, the "Data Layer" trick should hopefully solve your problem, let us know if that works for you.

  • How can I improve the performance of my MBP battery?

Hi, I've had my MBP 2.2GHz for about 2 months and a half now. I use the iStat Pro widget, and it says I've cycled the battery 94 times and the health is down to 92%.
I've looked up how to optimize the performance and realized I've misused my battery excessively. I use the WI-Fi 95% of the time. I mainly use it for school. This is what a day in use usualy is:
Charging all night, about an hour of use without power source, half an hour of use connected to the power source, about an hour of use without power source, 40 minutes with power source, and then asleep until I get home and use it usually connected to a power source unless not in my desk.
I still don't quite get what exactly the cycles mean, but I'll be calibrating the battery soon.
The question is: How could I optimize the performance to my battery and what habits will make it last longer? Is there any way I could recover the health of it? I plan on buying a new battery soon.

    Welcome to the Forums!
Actually, you are already using your battery in an optimal manner. Li-based batteries need to be used frequently and 'lightly' (i.e. not fully discharged too often) for best longevity. 92% health after 94 cycles is good (Apple specification is 80% health for 300 cycles).
You should properly calibrate your battery every 2 months or so:

    Hi All,
Can any bosy suggest me the right way to improve the performance while fetching data from RESB table. Below is the select statement.
    SELECT aufnr posnr roms1 roanz
        INTO (itab-aufnr, itab-pposnr, itab-roms1, itab-roanz)
        FROM resb
        WHERE kdauf  = p_vbeln
        AND   ablad  = itab-sposnr+2.
Here I am using 'KDAUF'  & 'ABLAD' in condition. Can we use secondary index for improving the performance in this case.

    Hi ,
Declare intenal table with only those four fields.
    and try the beloe code....
    SELECT aufnr posnr roms1 roanz
    INTO  table itab
    FROM resb
    WHERE kdauf = p_vbeln
    AND ablad = itab-sposnr+2.
yes, you can also use secondary index for improving the performance in this case.

  • [SOLVED] [QEMU] Improve graphics performance/resolution

    Hi,
I use qemu's kvm feature and successfuly installed Windows 7 in it.
Everything works quite well except the graphics performance being very poor.
When I move the cursor it starts flickering ('lagging') and I can't set the resolution fitting my laptop screen with a native resolution of 1366x768. (So currently using 1024x768 in the VM)
I start qemu with -vga vmware.
command I use for starting qemu:
    qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -machine type=pc,accel=kvm -cpu host -vga vmware -full-screen -k de -usb -usbdevice tablet -m 3072 /path/to/image.qcow2
Is there a way to fix this??
Last edited by kanikuleet (2013-04-15 10:49:36)

Finally got it working now, performance is surprisingly good!!!
I used to have Windows 7 Home Premium, then I discovered you cannot remote-connect to Home Prem as this version lacks that feature
So I got me Ultimate 64bit and it works.
I start the qemu vm with:
    qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -machine type=pc,accel=kvm -cpu host -nographic -k de -usb -m 4096 -net nic -net user,hostfwd=tcp::3389-:3389 /home/kanikuly/Pictures/ISO/Win7Ult64Bit.qcow2
    and rdesktop with:
    rdesktop -g 100% -E -D -K -P -f -z -x b -r sound:off -a 32 -u *** -p *** localhost

  • Help needed with certificates for RDS Host servers

    Hi,
We currently have 4 RD Session-Host servers in our network. All four servers are member of a TS farm. We also have a TS Gatway server.
I managed to give the TSGW server a certificate but I need your support on this on the RDS servers.
    What happens?
When a user connects to the farm, a warning pops up telling me that the certificate is not issued by a trusted CA. This is because all RDS servers are using self signed certificates. Because the servers are farm members a user can be presented with this
warning several times when the session is being redirected.
How do I get rid of these warnings as well in our LAN as on the internet? What certificate type do I need?
    Thanks in advance.
    Jasper Kimmel

    Hi Jasper,
What is your Server OS for your environment?
Yeah, your all certificate related all warnings can disappear by purchasing the certificate from public CA. To access the farm outside the environment you can buy wildcard certificate. And yes, your all related queries be solved from the article provide in
    my previous comment.
The easiest way to get a certificate, if you control the client machines that will be connecting, is to use Active Directory Certificate Services.  You can request and deploy your own certificates and they will be trusted by every machine in the domain.
If you're going to allow users to connect externally and they will not be part of your domain, you would need to deploy certificates from a public CA.  Examples including, but not limited to: GoDaddy, Verisign, Entrust, Thawte, DigiCert
In Windows 2008/2008 R2, you connect to the farm name, which as per DNS round robin, gets first directed to the redirector, next to the connection broker and finally to the server that will host your session.
In Windows 2012, you connect to the Connection Broker and it routes you to the collection by using the collection name.
The certificates you deploy need to have a subject name or subject alternate name that matches the name of the server that the user is connecting to.  So for example, for Publishing, the certificate needs to contain the names of all of the RDSH servers
in the collection.  The certificate for RDWeb needs to contain the FQDN of the URL, based on the name the users connect to.  If you have users connecting externally, this needs to be an external name (needs to match what they connect to).  If
you have users connecting internally to RDweb, the name needs to match the internal name.  For Single Sign On, again the subject name needs to match the servers in the collection. (Quoted from previous article).
Apart there is one more article by Kristin, you can go through for reference.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Accessing RDS Host servers via RDP that are behind a connection broker

Hello!  I've noticed this behavior where I can no longer RDP to the RDS Host I want after it's been added to the connection broker (by server name or IP).  The connection broker load balances me to any available rds host rather than the one i
need to get to.  Is there a trick to allow direct access to a host for administration?

    Hi,
Please use the /admin command line switch when you need to administer a specific RDSH that is part of a collection, like this:
    mstsc /admin
    Thanks.

  • Old iMac 8,1 slow -- how best to improve?

I have an old iMac for the kids: iMac 8,1 Core2 Duo with 3GB (2+1) RAM.
Recently upgraded it to Mavericks 10.9.
It's running quite slow; free RAM is always pretty low.
My question is, what will improve performance most?
Upgrade to an a 120GB SSD I have lying around?
    Upgrade RAM to 6GB (4+2)?
Revert to older OSX? Which version would be best?
Disable multiple user accounts? (We have one for the parents and one for each kid, with Parental Controls -- but I notice the extra accounts uses up more RAM.)

Running on 3 GBs of RAM is really not enough RAM for Mavericks.
Your iMac year and model can take 6 GBs of RAM max.
I would install the full 6 GB of RAM.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
OWC is the only source for the 6 GB kit OR the needed 4 GB RAM module.
Unless you have a known good and proper data backup, reverting to an older OS X version involves a complete hard drive reformatting and complete, clean install of a previous OS as well as re-installation of all of your applications.
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
Locate your iMac's hard drive icon on the OS X desktop. Click the icon once, then use the keyboard key combination Command-I. This will give you additonal info about your iMac's internal hard drive.
Post the used and available hard drive space in a reply here.
Your system could have some incompatible or unnecessary software installed that is compromising your iMac's performance.
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X and can cause adverse system issue and negatively impact  your Mac's speed and performance.
Do you have apps like MacKeeper or any other maintenance apps like CleanMyMac 1 or 2, TuneUpMyMac or anything like these apps, installed on your Mac?
These types of apps, while they appear to be helpful, can do too good a job of data "cleanup" causing the potential to do serious data corruption or data deletion and render a perfectly running OS completely dead and useless leaving you with a frozen, non-functional Mac.
Plus, these type of apps aren't really necessary. They really aren't.
There are manual methods to clear off unnecessary data off of your Mac that are safer and you have complete control over your Mac and not just leave a piece of auto cleaning software in charge of clearing off data off of your Mac. Their potential of causing OS X issues outweighs the implied good and benefits these types of hard drive or memory "cleaning" apps are written to do.
Plus, the software companies that write these apps make it hard to easily uninstall these apps if something DOES go wrong and these apps work in a way where you have no recovery or revert function to return your Mac back to its former, working state in the event something does go wrong.
It is best to never, EVER download and install these types of apps.
The risk to your system and data is too great a risk!
You you can have other third party software that is incompatible or not up to date to work with OS X Mavericks.
You may, also, have connected peripheral devices that may need update drivers to work with Mavericks.
If you so choose, Please download, install and run Etrecheck.
Etrecheck was developed as a simple Mac diagnostic and reporting  tool by a regular Apple Support forum user and technical support contributor named Etresoft.
Etrecheck is a small, unobstrusive app that compiles a static snapshot of your entire Mac hardware system and installed software.
This is a free app that has been honestly created to provided help in diagnosing issues with Macs running the new OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
It is not malware and can be safely downloaded and installed onto your Mac.

Copy/paste and post its report here in another reply thread so that we have a complete profile of your Mac's hardware and installed software so we can all help with your Mac performance issues.

  • Improving Graphical Performance in OS X 10.5.6

Hey, I'm new here. Just entered the Mac universe for the first time with a MBP 2.4 ghz (2GB RAM, 250 GB HD (5400)) I went this route because I wanted a Mac that I could also game on but I've been disappointed with the results so far. I've tried running various demos of games that were designed for OSX (Doom 3, Halo, etc.) but I haven't had very good results. I run the games at around 1024 x 768 but they're really choppy (15-30 fps depending.) What am I doing wrong?
I changed the setting for performance > battery life but only see very little performance gain. I know that I just have a stock MBP but benchmarks led me to believe that this hardware would be more than suitable to games, especially one that are 5+ years old. Looking at other info on the net, I see that the 9600GT is more powerful than the Xbox 360's graphics chip which has me even more puzzled (9 or 10 gigatexels vs 8) I know that this is a computer like any PC and that games aren't going to be fully optimized to run better than the 360. It's just the nature of having programs that were designed to run on various processor, ram, etc setups.
Is there some additional panel I can access to better control my resources? Are there any resources available online that talk about how to optimize an MBP for gaming?
I searched the net using all sorts of key words but have come across nothing but glowing praises of the MBP's ability to tear it up on the graphics circuit. How is it that some people are even running Crysis on higher end MBP's? Your help would be much appreciated!

    chris120,
The games that you mentioned (Halo, Doom 3) were released for OS X prior to the advent of Intel Macs. They were ported to PPC. After the Intel Macs came out, both games were updated to "universal binaries."
UB apps contain PPC code for running on earlier Macs, and Intel code for running on all new Macs. Some games, like C&C 3 were ported to OS X by wrapping them up in the Cider virtual machine, but this was after the release of Intel Macs. These games will only run on an Intel Mac.
Almost all games get some type of updates that optimize them, but that's not the issue here. Rather, we're talking about games that were originally ported to an entirely different processor architecture. This is no different than every other app that existed prior to the release of Intel Macs; all of these PPC apps run perfectly fine (most of the time) in Rosetta, which translates the code on the fly. However, the additional overhead needed for this is critical in the case of games. PPC games just do not run at all well in Rosetta.
When you see a game you think you'd like, make sure that it is a "universal binary" version, or Intel only. This will insure it will run well on your Intel Mac, without having to scour the web for the UB updates for it.

  • How Can I Improve Mavericks Performance (much slower than 10.8)?

When I upgraded to OS 10.9, I immediately saw a significant slower performance than with 10.8 or 10.7 (which I had been using for about two years). One big difference was a delay with the boot disc thrashing a lot when I started the computer and when I launched any app. That is, after starting my Mac Pro (2008), once the windows are all visible, there is a 30+ second delay (with the boot disc thrashing a lot) before it responds. A very similar thing happens when I launch any app. For example, when I launch iPhoto, after the photos appear, it takes 30+ seconds before it reponds to any mouse clicks. Under 10.7 and 10.8, there was about a 5 second delay (which I always thought was Faces doing its thing). This disc thrashing and delay before the app will respond happens with every app (Word, iMovie, Disc Utility, etc.) These delays never occured under 10.7 or 10.8.
A few people on the Apple Support forum suggested I run EtreCheck and remove various apps that they said could cause a problem with the OS. I removed every app they suggested, but I do not see any difference in performance. In my opinion, OS 10.9 has implemented something new that is causing my Mac Pro to run much slower.
I just ran a Safe Boot (using shift key while starting). I don't see any difference.
    I would appreciate any advice.

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • How to get better graphic performance on my Satellite C850?

    Hi.
I have a problem with my *Toshiba Satellite C850-B253* and The problem is of graphic,in my PC when i run "**PES 2013**" the game warned to me even my *GPU* is not minimum and is very low to open this program.
Please give me a issue that the game and my computer work better of past.
    Thank you

    Listen dude
You bought this notebook Satellite C850-B253 which is equipped with an Intel HD Graphics 4000 with shared memory (memory amount : up to 1,696 MB shared memory with 4 GB system memory installed (with pre-installed 64-bit operating system)
Dont expect too much from this internal graphic chip.
Your game is new and requires great GPU performance. If you are a gamer, you should purchase a notebook with an external GPU like ATI or nVidia.

  • How can I improve the performance of LOWER (col) LIKE ‘%name%’

    Hi,
I need to search for this condition:
    WHERE LOWER (col) LIKE ‘%name%’
In a table with 6,000,000 rows. I understand that when LIKE pattern begins with %, it cannot take the advantage of indexes.
Is there any technique to improve my query’s performance?
    Thank you,
    Alan

    Last solution is even worse.
    1. IT does the same thing (in a way ) that materialized view can do, except for you can set up materialized view to be auto refreshed (with materialized log, fast commit, etc or scheduled) and this last solution you will have to recreate the table every time you appear to have a new record, in other words you are in a maintenance nightmare (this could have been a solution before 8i)
    2. When you store a rowid in the table column you are asking for spanking........
    a. what will happen to your rowids when you export/import?
    b. enable row movement ?
    c. transition to RAC?
that's right your rowid formats will change your query won't work.
With Materialised view you have oracle do all this "maintenance" for you automagically.
Also as an idea if you say have 2 or 3 queries like that you can create 2-3 mat views and enable rewrite and supposedly it should pick up the right view for you.....
this is my solution # 3 (besides materialized views and indexes with regular expressions)
if you are searching word "name" (not a partial string inside other words like zzNAMEsdzz ) then you have many real indexing options (Oracle Text/Intermedia, etc)
    Hope it helps,
    Eugene
