Sometimes ADE gets its registration/activation confused and in a semi-authorized state.
Uninstalling and reinstalling does not help.
Unfortunately, it often then gives misleading error messages about what is wrong.
A common incorrect message informs you that the ID is already in use on another computer and cannot be reused.
This can often be resolved by completely removing any authorization using ctrl-shift-D to the Library screen on ADE (cmd-shift-D if on Mac).
Restart ADE, and then reauthorize with your (old) Adobe ID.
In extreme cases on the mac, the following extra step has helped some people. Navigate to /Users//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Digital Editions and drag the activation.dat file to the trash. There are lots of bugs in ADE2.0. Try replacing ADE2.0 with the older but more reliable v1.7.2.
(You can have them both installed at once if you like.)
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

There is no place from which to authorize this new computer or to deauthorize the 1 computer that is dead rather than both. Suggestions appreciated

To authorize the Windows 8 computer, press the Alt and S keys and choose Authorize this Computer, or click here, follow the instructions, click on Store in the menu bar, and choose Authorize this Computer.
It isn't possible to individually deauthorize a computer which is dead or which you don't have either physical or network access to.

I now have a different computer and I am using my iMac address for my account, When I attempt to play tunes that I purchased and downloaded under the former account, I get a message that says I must authorize this computer.If I try to authorize the new computer using the old account, I get a message that account no longer exists (which is true). If I try to authorize using the new account, I get a message telling me this computer is already authorized (also true). But it still won't let me play songs authorized under the old account! Make a backup of the iPod by connecting the iPod to the computer and right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and selecting Backup. Then restore the iPod from that backup and sync as necessary.
