How can I "proxy edit:" a high-definition project?

This is an undocumented process, created by the always amazing Robert Johnston, and a good solution if you find that editing HDV and AVCHD video natively puts too much stress on your system's resources.
Proxy editing temporarily substitutes a sort of preview video for the native files, usually one of lower resolution so that you can work with it more easily. Then, when you output your project, the editing and effects applied to the proxy video are applied to the actual footage, creating a high-definition output.<br /><br />Here is Robert's solution:
I have a custom project preset for 1080i that has an editing mode of 360x270. Anything you render as a preview is only 360x270 "MPEG-2 I-Frame Only." You can create your own and see if it helps with editing.
To create your own, you first pick a project preset by clicking "Setup" on the startup screen displayed by Premiere Elements 4. Select the 1080i 30 or the 1080i 25 project preset from the HDV tree inside the NTSC or PAL nodes. Click the "New Preset" button, then click the "Save" button, then give the custom preset a name and description of your choice. Click "Save as Default." Exit out of Premiere Elements.
Now open up your custom preset with WordPad. The custom preset file will be in the following folder:<br /><br />C:\documents and settings\[login id]\application data\adobe\premiere elements\4.0\settings\custom\
Once you've opened it in WordPad, scroll down past the gibberish until you get to the line with ObjectID="6" and change the PixelAspectRatio from 1920,1080 to 480,360 and change the FrameSize from 1440,1080 to 360,270. Then save the file.
<VideoSettings ObjectID="6" ClassID="58474264-30c4-43a2-bba5-dc0812df8a3a" Version="8">
<MaximumBitDepth>false</MaximumBitDepth>
<PixelAspectRatio>480,360</PixelAspectRatio>
<FrameSize>0,0,360,270</FrameSize>
After saving the file, you can start up PE and create a new project based on that custom preset. Clips you drag to the timeline will look normal sized, but if you render a preview of it, it will only be 360x270. It will look best when magnification is set to "Fit" or 50%.
Add titles, effects, transitions. Then render a preview.
You may not think that this would export correctly, but so far it has worked for me. The only thing that I haven't tried is burning a Blu-ray disc
Titles won't come out correctly if you change framesizes in some of the other ObjectIDs of the custom preset file. Just change the one that I specified.
Hopefully that gives you the idea so you can change the frameszie to something else if you don't like 360x270."

Thanks for the reply.
I am with you about editng preview file (proxy) instead of the original AVCHD HD1080i or HDV HD 1080i. But, I went off course with your comment:
"Using the proxy you can view the video/effect without rendering" since you do not see the preview file until after you have rendered your edit of the Timeline.
Perhaps my understanding of that will answer the question that I asked about the benefits of using the proxy procedure if the workflow is just import, no edit, export.

I want to break up my hour long video in iMovie 11 into smaller 15 minute segements to upload to youtube. How can i put EDITED VIDEO in new projects in iMovie? (each 15 minute segment to iMovie)

In iMovie's Project Library view (where all your projects are listed), click on the name of your project (don't double-click to open it, just single click to highlight it).
From the Menu select File > Duplicate Project. A copy of your project will be placed in the Project Library. It will have the same name as the original, but with a number appended. You can rename it if desired - click on its name twice (not double-click) so that it is highlighted as light blue, then over-type it.
Delete from the duplicate all the clips and other media (for example, photos, music and so forth) that you don't want included in the first of your 15 minute segments. In other words, delete all but the first 15 minutes.
Continue creating duplicates of the original (and rename if necessary). Delete from each duplicate all the unrequired parts for each segment. So, for example, for the 2nd duplicate delete the first quarter (15 minutes) and the 3rd and 4th quarters.
You should end up with 4 duplicates with separate names, each containing the required segment. You will also have kept intact the original one hour movie, which you may wish to use independently of YouTube (maybe for burning a DVD or playback through a Media Player).
Note that duplicating the original project will not take up much extra space on your drive. Projects reference (link to) the associated Event (or Events) in the Event Library - they don't actually contain video as such. The project file also keeps track of titles, transitions, effects, music and so forth that you've added to the project.

  • How can i get the same high definition i see on my iPad to mirror to my tv?

I am using my LGTV to watch shows I am streaming on my iPad. The iPad is small, the picture quality is great. But when I use airstream to push it through my apple TV, the picture is blurry. I realize I am going from a small iPad screen to a large TV screen, but is there any way to sharpen the larger image?

The content is the same, it would have nothing to do with going from iPad to ATV. There may be an issue with the network.
    Reboot both devices.
    If on wifi try ethernet
Go to istumbler, netstumbler or similar to get a report of the network, look for signal strength and noise.

  • Can now with imovie 1.2.2 and iOS5 edit 1080p high definition videos from DSLR cameras like the EOS 5D Mark II on ipad 2?

Can now with imovie 1.2.2 and iOS5 edit 1080p high definition video from DSLR cameras like the EOS 5D Mark II on ipad 2?.
That would be great, you would open the door to professional video editing ipad 2. Is there an accepted camera list?.

There does not appear to be a list yet.

Have the project, events and media on one drive which is common to both macs.
You can download FCP X to both macs using the same Apple ID that it was purchased with.

  • How can I sync up the IDOC definitions between PI/XI and R3?

    XI/PI gurus,
We just applied SAP enhancement packs 4 to our R3 and some XI patches to our XI/PI and now we did not see the messages in our XI  QA box after the IDOC was sent out from R3.
We think one possible cause was the IDOC definition are different between our XI and R3.
How can I sync up the IDOC definitions between PI/XI and R3 and not mess up our existing mappings in XI?
Should I just remove the import objects and reipmort the IDOCS from R3 again?
    Thanks in advance!
    Fisher Li

Use transaction IDX2. The metadata must be deleted from the cache in IDX2, this can be done by selecting the appropriate system from the list, drilling  down the affected IDOC type and chosing delete
The next time an IDOC is sent or received, the cache will be refreshed.

  • How can i quick edit Audio( increase bass) of a single file?

    Hi everyone,
Im new to FCPX. I have a bunch of videos of music gigs ive played and would like to increase the bass (via equalizer) on most of them. All these videos are already converted into an "Apple Friendly" format and are sitting comfortably in my Itunes Video folder. How can i quickly increase the bass in each video (Without having to tediously export one by one) in FCPX and do a quick overwrite over the original video without having to make an EXTRA file?
    THanks

    ok.
"Why don't you increase the bass with the equalizer in FCP? Do it to one clip and use paste attributes to apply it to other clips."
    1) How do i copy the attributes after making the changes??
    2) How do i paste the attributes onto the next file?
    Thanks.

In Mail, How can I continue editing an email saved as a draft to the drafts folder?

Came here to find the solution but eventually found one myself. You just simply double click on the e-mail you want to edit on the left pane, and it'll open a composing window.

  • How can our customer edit our Captivate 6 content with Captivate 5?

Our company has decided to dive into the e-learning business and create e-learnings.  We just purchased a Captivate 6 subscription, unfortunately before finding out our customer uses Captivate 5.  He would like to edit our files once in a while when he needs to if he doesn't have enough time to have us do it.   Is there anyway he can edit content produced in Captivate 6 with his Captivate 5.  Can I export files of a certain type that he can in turn import and add to his Captivate 5 and edit himself?  In other words, what kind of files can I export from Captivate 6 than he can import with Captivate 5 and make small changes to?
      Vielen Dank,
                 Ryan

Thank you.  I see that I can export content as an .xml file.  Isn’t this something he can upload with Captivate 5?    Thanks for bearing with my naivety. : )

How can I add "Edit with Photoshop CS5" to the Edit With options?

I think it has something to do with the order in which the PSE and PS are installed on your machine.
For me, I can see option for editing in photoshop both in edit menu and from the action bar. I probably had Photoshop installed on my system before PSE

  • How can I still edit my iWeb site on new iMac

My mid 2007 24" iMac which has served me well has memory problems. I now work with much larger projects ( Logic Studio + video ) than earlier, and have to continually keep clearing the memory as I work. I have the maximum  4 GB RAM  ).
This is halting progress so seriously that I'm considering changing it for a new iMac .... 27".
My question is: How can I still edit my iWeb site on a new iMac, when iLife is no longer included, and so presumably OS 10.7 doesn't support iWeb ?
    Will be grateful for insights.
    Thanks,
    SeaDream.

Well thanks. Sounds so complicated, though. Would another option be to backup my present Mac HD ( with Snow Leopard ) to an external HD and simply edit iWeb from there ?
As long as I also backed up this external HD, would this be a possibility ?

How can I burn a copy of my project to a DVD . I do not have IDVD because I have the Lion OS. I did purchase Wondershare for burning but it will not load the iMovie events or projects

There is no proper substitute for iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?

    UPDATE & ADDENDUM:
But even though you can still buy iLife 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
Poster jhb21939 posted this in another thread:
“when I attempted to load iDVD into a new iMac. A notice came up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March this year (2012).
I contacted the Apple support team and eventually, I was told that the Licence had been withdrawn and could no longer be used.”
In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
In response, Old Toad posted this solution:
“You can still use it one all of your Macs.  If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After you're done reset the time back to the correct time.” He added this comment:
“It began after iDVD and iWeb were discontued and they were dropped from the Apple Store. All I can think of is the certificate was set to expire after a certain time period after the intitial iLife disc was released.
I've been able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  I just clicked on the Continue button and it would work as expected.  For some it would not continue unless the date was set back.”
The latest anorexic iMacs just announced do not even include a CD drive! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of DVDs - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?

  • How can I move a photo from one project to another

How can I move a photo from one project to another without creating a duplicate so I have the same photo in two projects.
I seems to me in the past when I moved the photo from project 1 to project 2, I would get a number showing the # of photos being moved and you could drag and drop in the 2nd folder and the photos would disappear from project 1 and show up in project 2. is there a setting I am missing.  Now when I drag and drop the photo no red # shows up and the photo stays in project 1 and also shows up in project 2 apparently creating a duplicate.
    Any suggestion?

Now when I drag and drop the photo no red # shows up and the photo stays in project 1 and also shows up in project 2 apparently creating a duplicate.
The projects are the basic containers.  Each image and all its versions are in exactly one project.
You can use an image in many albums, without duplicating it, also in many products like books, screensaver, slideshows.  But the projects are the basic structure of the library and you cannot have the same image in two different project, without duplicating it by storing the same original image files twice. Use albums to organize your library thematically.
Sorry, I misread your question.   Dragging an image file between projects should move the image and all its versions to the other project.  Aperture should only duplicate the image, if you hold down the alt/options key while dragging and move the image otherwise.
Which Aperture version are you using? And which MacOS X version?  Is your profile signature "MacBook Pro with Retina display, Mac OS 9.2.x, Aperture 3.5.1" still valid?
In Aperture 3.6 on MacOS X 10.10.1 dragging between projects is still working as expected:
